Our Gen Con Vlog Day 1!
Transcript
Uh good morning. It is Gen Con day one. Uh we've got a lot of fun stuff planned for today. Lots of meetings, of course just the kickoff of the whole thing and the doors opening and rushing and people rushing in to grab games.
And then our eldest is participating in some of the fun craft things this year. Um so I'm looking forward she's going to take some video coverage of that for you so you can see all of those fun things.
So we have been waiting uh patiently for our shuttle for about 10 years now.
I haven't been patient.
But it has been close to 10 years. Agreed.
Yeah, I definitely. Yeah.
Yeah, so I just skipped in line and just stand here.
We had another baby.
Yeah.
That's how long we've been waiting.
Gosh. No, thank you. Uh but here is our baby. You can see him. But he's hanging out. Uh yeah, so this is our Gen Con so far. Standing.
Well, the youngest two and I didn't want to wait for the shuttle, so we're just walking. Me and the youngest. This isn't walking. But that's fine. So every year at Gen Con there's this artwork that's like a collective that a lot of people work on together. So I'm going to try to get a little video footage of it every day so you can see the progress.
I'll be here for
Hi. We're having like a comedy of errors today. We missed the huge grand introduction by like 5 minutes, which is really frustrating. Um Ryan was informed that the shuttle was running an hour loops, which is not what was advertised to us when we um bought those parking spaces. Um but it's good that it happened today. Hopefully we can um with that information do something different the next couple of days. And then our daughter had a program at 10 that she is late to because of those shuttles. And so we're hoping um that we can do something with that. Also, if you ever miss a program, you try to find the people and turn in your tickets anyway.
I remember talking to somebody who did events years ago, and she was saying that that's how they get reimbursed by Gen Con is by turning in those tickets. So, even if you miss a program, make sure to find the the person who did that um cuz their email address is on the event vault just so they can have that ticket for that. Um Yeah, it's I'm hoping the rest of the day goes really, really well.
String Theory is a game I got to play as a prototype, uh and now there is a giant version of it. This is a giant game where you're connecting these are conspiracy theories together with string. So, it's happening and of course you're wearing tin foil hats as you're playing trying to connect all the dots in order to make uh to in order to win.
We'll go to Wildlands up there.
You just put it in like that. And so, how it works is uh on my turn, say for example, I would take a flower from here. And so, when I do that, if I take this, I will call out to everyone else that the orange uh is in play, and so you would get say that's yours, you would get to move up one up on your orange flower. And so, that goes through
So, the really cool thing about this game is the entire board's in your hand. So, this is a cooperative limited communication game, scarcity game. Uh so, at the beginning, you were going to reveal multiple rooms in the drawer. And it's our job as a group to get this die that's in here to land in these rooms and then finally out the door.
Put them down as soon as possible because you don't want the bag in your hand when the timer goes off. There is no set time, so the timer is random. So, as you're passing around, whoever still has the bag in their hand, even if they place the token, you still have the bag, your token goes back in the bag and you get a bad luck token. That has points on it. So, at the end, whoever has the most points loses. You don't want to be the loser. Okay? You don't want to be the loser. You want two or three points. You don't want the points. You can do any part. Any part.
Sugar?
This year, as you can see, it comes with premium materials this year. We have a playmat, which makes setup really easy and makes it look really good.
You got the Pokémon all together.
I'm supposed to make sure I don't run into anybody, so I'm not like one of those people. I'm going to be one of those people. But I We just walked by Scorbunny mask and I saw the banner for the new tag team, which I'm super excited about. That is such an innovative two-player programming game. I really like it. I'm excited to see what they do with all the King Arthur lore in that, but yeah. Sorry, I didn't mean for you to be in my face, but it's going pretty well. Things seem to be smoothed out a little bit. A little bit.
Nobody's in here as I wouldn't be making this video, but in the Wabash room, where the monthly kids area is, they have some really awesome nursing mother stations. So, they put in these really nice couches. I'll show you in just a second. And it's all enclosed with these black curtains that you can see around me. So, it's really neat that this is just set up here and right outside of one of the main halls.
So, I'm making die and it like you glue it and like it has six sides and it's a D20. So, there's 2 20 uh
[groaning]
14 9 Those are the numbers. All the numbers 1 through 20. Well, not all of them because I didn't finish it yet cuz I have to put lights in it.
Cool.
You have a velvet bag and everything?
I don't know. I try to collect all of the promotional extra colors.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
I couldn't get my hands on all of them, but I tried.
some of them?
This is the 20th anniversary edition of Sorcerer.
It's very important to us.
So, all of those are watercolor, you said?
Yes. So, all of these are watercolor paintings by our wonderful artist, Andy Hepworth. Um and they are all massive paintings in real life and I love them all so dearly. Um Let's get to the cool ones. I'm trying to find Arthur. King Arthur is in here somewhere, but they are fantastic.
The explorers that are working their way through the jungle and then we have the drones that are flying over the jungle to take pictures. Um
So, we're going to be meeting with Haba pretty soon. I'm really excited about it because we've been out of that market for a little while and I'm a huge advocate of playing kids games with kids. Um they're only little for so long that I think it's really weird to try to push them to these more advanced games right away. So, I love HABA and I love everything that they do. I'm really excited for this meeting and the fact that we're back in that market again.
We have been big fans of the Lorcana Illumineer's Quest. This is the third one, The Great Honey Rescue. Uh this is supposed to be pretty tough, but somehow somehow we got to manage to get enough lore and knock out this big bad, uh the Chamber Guardian of the Vine. Um so, yeah, we had a blast playing this. Uh it's an awesome event. I love this new this new Illumineer's Quest. I can't wait to crank up the uh the difficulty and see how we can do. All right, we have some masso massive Lorcana cards. She's going to choose one and we see what we see what we get.
know if these are are random now.
You got to shuffle. You got to shuffle.
You got to shuffle.
How do you shuffle big cards? I don't know.
You need big hands.
Big hands. Got to get some bigger hands. All right.
Look at that. Look at that. Fanning it out like a pro. Ready? What is it?
And we've got Ariel.
She is an adventurous collector.
Show everybody.
Elsa!
Elsa!
Epic! Epic Elsa!
All right, so that's a wrap on day one of Gen Con. This was like a the majority of our meetings kind of all out of the way today. We still have more coming up, but today was like the all like the the most of them.
Yeah, I had a meeting with HABA. It was really fun cuz they were talking about um a bunch of games that are coming out that are for older audiences. They even have a game coming out
Like old people, like geriatrics.
gosh. It's for
Senior citizen lines of games.
It's for 10 plus. And did you know Did you know that their boxes that are all yellow are for their youngest kids? The boxes that have the the yellow strip at the bottom is for their middle age. And then their boxes that are fully colored are for 8 plus.
What about their pink boxes?
It's fully colored. That's what That's what I was told today, so that was it.
I didn't know that that actually works. All right. Uh so yeah. Uh tomorrow we have some more fun stuff coming up, so be sure to stay tuned. You guys, thanks for watching our shenanigans.
