We BROKE Hungry Hungry Hippos World Record! (You Won't Believe How Fast) - Lost In The Shuffle
Transcript
If at first you don't succeed, should you try try and try again or should you just let it be lost in the shuffle? Are you an optimist or a pessimist? You know, one thing I like about you, Grant, what is Well, one, you smell like lavender. Hey, but the other is that you're not a quitter. You don't give up. That is true. Yeah. Yeah. I I will keep banging my head against the wall for a long time. Yes, some of us find it hilarious, but I find it endearing. Well, thank you. I appreciate it. And I bring that up because a few episodes ago, we attempted a world record at filling up a Connect 4 board the fastest. Yeah, we got super close and then it all fell apart. But then Matthew, our co-producer and co-writer, helped find another board game related world record for us to smash. Yes. Which was sorting a deck of playing cards. And we did it. We set the world record and I went to submit our world record.
Perfect. It said, "Hey, by the way, thanks for submitting this. Did you know there already is a world record for this that we just don't have listed on the website yet?" Wait, why is it not listed on the website? To crush your dreams, perhaps. You'll find that the current world record actually is sorting a deck of cards in 31 seconds. And what I I think I did it in 2 minutes and 14 seconds or something like that. So, not even close. Great. So, my achievement lasted for all of like two seconds. Huh? Like it. Did you enjoy it? You may be able to reclaim that feeling. Okay. Because Matthew has found another world record for us. This time, the world record for the fastest time of clearing a hungry hungry hippos board.
Okay. And this time, we know what the time is. Okay. What's the time to beat? 11.74 seconds. That's It's all there is to it. I want to find a world record that I can that we can actually set on this show. This might be it. This might be the one. We got I have zero faith. We're going to try. We're going to try. But audience, I want you to find us a world record that you think we can beat that we can set here on this show. We're going to try. I have zero confidence that we can do this in faster than 11 seconds. All right. Well, let's get the board set up. While we get the board set up, let's have a quick word from the sponsor that helped make this worldshattering episode possible. So, what we have here is a regulation hungry hungry hippos board.
Are there nonregulation hungry hungry hippos boards? Well, there's, you know, pick rhinoceroses and there stuff like that. Now, the record is for clearing it. Is there a strategy to clearing them faster? I feel like I would have implemented that before in my plays of it. You just mash it as quickly as you can, right? Maybe we'll find out. I guess the fastest time to clear a game of hungry hungry hippos individual. Oh, individual individual. Okay. Okay. Is 11.47 seconds and was achieved by Lim Kai in Malaysia in Butterworth Palo Pinyang on October 28th. Dig this 2024. Oh, this hasn't been a record for that long. Oh, you had it for a minute and it's going to fall. Oh, that's definitely not going to come back to bite you. Nope. I had zero confidence before. I don't know why I have so much confidence now. Okay, if it helps. I think that the moment you start mashing these hippos, any strategy you have is going to just fall out the window.
That's probably true. I'm going to count you down. Okay. 3 2 1 go. Okay. 3 2 1 go. Come on, get over here. This one's full and this one has nothing. I I can't get any more from How do I get it over here? You got close. Well, I think Look, this guy is full up. He couldn't accept anymore. I think you're able to use all four hit. Oh, yeah. I should I don't know why I got so focused. And you're right. That makes complete sense. I was like, "This guy's not reaching. I'm stuck." No, I could have just done that. Okay, so Pink and I are fast friends right now. Pink did its job. Look at that. That's allow. Blue, get out of here. Nobody likes you, Blue.
I'll help you reset here. Knock them all back in there. I think you have a chance. Okay. And I don't say that about you very often at all. So, is there anything that really means something? Okay. My strategy this time is to tell blue to go take a nap. And I'm over here on pink and yellow this time. Are you ready? Yes. 3 2 1 go. Oh, he's stuck. What is What is pink doing this time? Time. Oh, I was close on that one. Down to two. So, what what did you change about your strategy? Um, pink didn't hold its weight as much. I I tried a different hippo at some point. I feel like that is the key of this. You know, I'm here here, but then you knock some stuff away and you're like, "Oh, you need to be able to to change hippos mid game." You got to be able to adapt to where the balls are in the moment. You got to keep yourself versatile. Yes.
Okay. Yeah. I Pink was getting stuck on some, so Oh, no. Look. See, Pink is stuck. That's going to give you a little bit of a challenge. Yes. Sticky Hippo. Oh, Sticky Hippo. Excellent band name. True. Feeling frosty. Yes. I This is my last attempt here and then you get it. You get it. You shot shot at it. I I think you I think you are honing your stretches. I'm figuring it out a little bit. Okay. Three, two, one, go.
I was knocking it around. It was like bouncing around between hippos. I was like right there. I did a good job. I adapted. I was going I was going between hippos. Oh, you were so close. That was close. I I think there's potential here, though. I do. I feel like we might be able to do it. Let's Let's do this. Put you on the bench for one round. Okay. I will take a stab at it. I want you I want you to have a shot. Okay. But then we'll come back and we'll get we'll get that record. Nothing in there. So, I'm going to do a 3 2 1 go. And on I'm hitting it on go. You're going on go. Okay. Ready? Uh-huh. 3 2 1 go.
You know what? I'm just glad to be part of this. Okay, that's awesome. You beat it by a bunch. Wow. What a what a strategy. Oh, thank you. That was interesting. Not something that ever occurred to me. How did that occur to you? Watching you fail. Really? Okay. Yeah. Well, cuz I was thinking, okay, I was watching you concentrate on these think. Yeah. And you are bouncing them back and forth. So, I figured if I just hit these, then let them do their thing. Sure. and switch because they're bouncing them the other way. I'm saving just a few micro seconds. Well, it worked. Wow, it worked. 8.19. Okay. Look at that. Let's see if you can beat 8.19. You ready? You think you got it? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I'm going to steal yours your technique. Technique for sure.
Okay, here we go. Three, two, one, go. Boom. Whoa. Oh my gosh. 5.67 seconds. I mean, there is definitely a little bit of luck that sometimes they bounce around and sometimes you just get it just right. Like it rolls as you're going and it just boom. Yeah. What a good technique you came up with though. You you We're sharing this world record. Hey, I am going to submit it. So, we will find out. I was a real negative Nelly at the start of this episode. I was like, 11 seconds, that's impossible. Nobody could do that. And then we crushed it. 11 seconds sounds so fast. I know it does.
But when you're doing it, it's just the time slows down. Yeah. Yeah. I can't believe I know that felt way longer than five almost 6 seconds. You know, this feels way better than it should. I got to tell you. All right. Yes, this I'm I'm so happy right now. Awesome. Okay, I will submit this. In a future episode, we will revisit what happened and maybe we'll have another world record finds for us to try. Fun. And if you find one, let us know and we'll take a stab at that one, too. Yeah. In the meantime, though, let's uh take a moment to reset and we'll come right back with your next game night pick. All right. All right, Grant. What game pick do you have for us now? Well, you know, this involved animals. Uh, it's silly. It's got a little bit of dexterity. So, we were talking one of our favorite games like that is Camel Up. Absolutely. This is just like one of those games if I ranked games on fun, you know? I This would be at the top of the Every time I have it, I just have such a great fun time. It's not just a party game, you know? It it it feels like kind of like an elevated party game or something like that. Yeah, you have the camels that are racing around the track and who's in the lead is always changing and so you have a little bit of bedding and just a little bit of mindless fun and you have that party atmosphere. Yeah. I'll tell you uh just a story that I like to illustrate just how much fun this game can be. My dad drove to a board game convention that I was at one time just to have lunch. And I was like, "Come in, play one game." And it was a smaller
like playing convention. And so my dad came in and we played Camel Up at maybe five or six players. And there was a moment where we had both bet on the purple camel. And so again, not a co not a cooperative game. We just both had bet on the same thing. And it was down to the end of the round. And the only way the purple came was going to pay out was if we shook the pyramid, dropped the purple uh dice out, and it hit three. It probably not that likely to happen. It's exactly what happened. Hit three. We both were like, "Yeah." And then because we were so excited, the entire convention just started clapping for us and and we were like sitting there and everybody was like, "Yeah, good job." And so the whole room applauded for us in the moment. And my dad still brings that up. My dad still is like, "Remember when we were playing that one game and everybody clapped for us?" And it's like his favorite moment in games at all and stuff, too. So cool when you have a game that can create those moments. Yeah, there's a lot of memorable moments. The camel up adjacent game that I was thinking of is one called Divinity Derby. Oh, that looks fun. I've never heard of this one. Yeah, it's a similar concept. You are in a race and you're going around this circular racetrack.
You have a hand of cards shared hand here and then I would have one shared hand here. First round you'll pick from the shared hand on your left and you'll play that one. Next round you'll pick from the shared hand on your right. So there's this chance that oh you're going to take the card I need. Oh no I'm going to take this just to spite you. Very camel up like enough of a different flavor that I think it stands on its own as well. And if you like camel up definitely worth trying too. We also got a whole handful of other episodes coming up for you in the days to come. And in the meantime though, want to thank you for joining us. It's worth it just because you got to watch a a world record get broken twice today. Absolutely. That is absolutely worth the price of admission of absolutely nothing. So, thanks for joining us and we will talk to you again real soon.
