Pros
  • Interesting new characters with good art and design.
  • Treasures from the expansion can be shuffled into the base game to increase the market.
  • Monuments have a badass appearance and can add interesting events.
  • The game still has an atmospheric feel and the tower is fantastic.
Cons
  • Cannot be combined with the Alliance expansion, which is a huge disappointment and limiting.
  • Wasteland tokens are considered useless and a waste of components.
  • Doom skulls don't significantly increase difficulty.
  • New corruption cards are too hyperspecific.
  • Monuments are not scaled for player count and can be detrimental to gameplay.
  • The game can become too easy, leading to a feeling of steamrolling and boredom.
  • The app locks players out of combining expansions or house-ruling.

  • Return to Dark Tower
  • Spirit Island
  • Sleeping Gods

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • blessings — A new mechanic that counts as a wild advantage, lost at the end of a heroic action.
  • Charge Tokens — Tokens associated with specific treasures (wands) that are spent to activate their abilities.
  • Doom tokens — Permanent skulls placed on buildings, theoretically making them easier to destroy.
  • monuments — The expansion adds monuments that replace buildings, requiring an 'offering condition' before they can be built and offering an ultimate ability.
  • New Characters — Four new characters are added with unique banner abilities and starting virtues.
  • New Corruption Deck — Corruption cards that are stated to be harder than the base game ones.
  • Wasteland Tokens — Tokens that stop movement in a space, making it a full stop regardless of other movement abilities.

Quotes (from this video)
  • my overall thoughts for the Covenant expansion is it's all right like it's uh it's not bad but I'm not I'm I'm not that Keen on wanting to ever play this expansion
  • unfortunately this expansion cannot be combined with the alliance expansion and I think that that is a huge dis disappointment
  • the Wasteland tokens have never been an issue like at all in fact they've they've been more of a problem of rules than actual like a hindrance in movement
  • I find them completely useless
  • I didn't find them all that all that much more difficult honestly
  • I don't really care for The Monuments I don't think they're bad like I don't think this expansion is like it's not trash
  • I just didn't really I don't really want to play with them
  • I find that the lack of a building at the beginning of the game to be pretty detrimental
  • it's just kind of like we're kind of rinse and repeat here
  • I think just overall I mean if a new expansion comes that I'm absolutely getting it like I still like this game
  • I just don't really care for really anything it added except the characters
  • because you can't combine it with the alliance expansion I'm not going to play with it
  • it's just kind of too easy so I kind of get bored
  • overall I think on a scale of 1 to 10 I'm going to give the Covenant expansion I think I'm honestly G to give it a five
  • because you can't combine it with the alliance expansion I think I'm actually going to drop it by a point I think I am going to put it at at a five

Pros
  • really like some of the other interactions
  • everything else about the expansion I really really like
  • like that there is sort of a plug-and-play aspect
  • helps round out the world
  • like that you can have all these different kind of setups and things that are going to kind of vary in difficulty
Cons
  • honestly a little disappointed
  • Wasteland markers fix something that was maybe too easy
  • not conducive to trying to win the game sometimes
  • first time we did it and I just ignored the quest... impossible to win
Thematic elements
Comparison games
  • Return to Dark Tower: Alliances
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • App-assisted Challenges — The app will like randomly tell you which ones [monuments] to do.
  • monuments — You replace one of each of those [building] and then in one of each of the four different regions and that building's gone... and you put like this little blueprint token down.
  • Wasteland Markers — Has you put out these Wasteland markers which basically sort of desolate all of the different zones on the board.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is just a dice chuck fest with very, very, very little mitigation and it just constantly kicks you in the face.
  • It's like a game from the 80s but good.
  • The app that walks you through the game I think is the best I've ever seen at that.
  • It just does more of the same, but slightly different.
