Pros
  • Nicest looking monster boards in the series
  • Fancy monster boards with book-like backs
  • Monsters require dice rolls to defeat
  • Feels Dungeons & Dragons-y
  • Carrionette monster is straightforward, though requires many specific items
  • Baba Lasagna's mechanics make sense thematically
  • Strahd is the 'big boss' with multiple steps
  • Monsters are generally well-balanced, with games coming down to the final turn
  • Strahd's second monster board sits nicely above Castle Ravenloft
  • Map has just enough dead ends and circuitous routes
  • Good artwork on the map
  • Numbers on map locations help place items
  • Five new heroes included
  • Hero actions can be determined by a dice roll when other actions aren't available
  • Stained glass style artwork for heroes
  • Dark gift power adds an interesting, high-stakes decision
  • Power cards have cool artwork, including a +4 dice roll bonus
  • Cool molds for the monsters
  • Carrionette is super creepy
  • Baba Lasagna house art is reminiscent of Miyazaki films
  • Generally nice art overall
  • Mechanically, monsters work well and aren't too complicated
  • Dice rolls at the end feel very D&D
  • Usable with other games in the series, allowing for mixing and matching
  • Strahd as a two-part boss works well for questing and a final fight
Cons
  • Misprints on a couple of monster boards
  • Carrionette requires a lot of specific items
  • Misprint on Gulf Fire's tree: twig blights don't have symbols as described in the rulebook
  • Gulf Fire's tree: reconned rule (move any twig blight) isn't loved, original rule interpretation with different colored stands works better
  • Gulf Fire's tree: flipping tokens can be risky and may cause everything to flip back
  • Strahd requires a lot of items and turns
  • Misprint on Strahd's map: states 20 needed to defeat, rule book says 15 (rule book is correct)
  • The map's font for locations is hard to read
  • Wish numbers were on villager cards, not just item tokens
  • Villager pictures don't always match card pictures (dress color, last name consistency)
  • Cardboard container for components can't store items in the box
  • Mix-up with Gulf Fire's tree rules
  • Minor graphical things or mistakes holding the game back
  • Tiny typos, except for the two monster mats which do have impact
Thematic elements
  • Dungeons & Dragons
  • Ravenloft
Comparison games
  • Horrified
  • Other Horrifieds
  • Dungeons & Dragons themed Horrified
  • Universal Monsters (Horrified)
  • Greek Monsters (Horrified)

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is the latest game in the Horrified series and it has the same general gameplay as the other Horrifieds where you're playing cooperatively, you're collecting up items, you're trying to get villagers to their safe spaces and importantly you're trying to defeat the monsters.
  • I do want to talk about the positive things and one of the positive things are I think these are the nicest looking monster boards that they've had so far.
  • It does feel Dungeons & Dragons-y.
  • This is probably one of the easier, more straightforward monsters.
  • This is also a little bit of a push your luck game.
  • Strahd, and this is the big boss.
  • There's a lot of bits you've got to do cuz it's kind of a fetch quest, kind of another fetch quest, and then a bunch of fighting.
  • I I like Strahd and I think it makes sense in terms of that D&D world where you do have these mini quests of needing to get these very specific items and carry them around and then eventually defeat like the big monster.
  • And I found that these monsters are really well balanced.
  • Apparently the rule book is correct and it's too bad that there's that mix-up, but just remember you need 15 not 20 as we first thought.
  • This is kind of it feels a bit like a back-to-basics map.
  • I do think that the font for the locations is really hard to read.
  • What's new for this version is the dark gift power that each of the heroes have.
  • So you generally don't want to use these till right near the end of the game. These are kind of for like Hail Mary's.
  • This does something that has been in a couple of the other games where the picture on the villager is not the same as the picture on the card. It drives me nuts.
  • This is some of the coolest art that has been in any of the games.
  • I really like the molds of the monsters.
  • I think the carrionette is super creepy.
  • I really like the Baba Lasagna house.
  • Another negative, I feel like I'm just being the negative guy here, but is the bag in this.
  • Where does this fit compared to the rest?
  • For me, I'd say this is probably in the middle.
  • And I really like that it all comes down to like a big dice roll at the end. It feels very D&D.
  • I do wish that there wasn't the mix-up with the tree.
  • I definitely think put those colored bases on. Use it as it is in the rules. It just works so much better.
  • I think this is kind of right in the middle.
  • I'd probably put this above the last two, but certainly not as high as Universal or Greek monsters.
  • And part of it is that this one just has a few like little graphical things or just little mistakes that are holding it back.
  • And I do like that they have continued to make it usable with the other games in the series, in particular the more recent ones that use the colored symbols. And so you can continue to mix and match.
  • And I think Strahd as a two-part boss works really well to do the questing and then the final fight at the end.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I made 15 videos last week. Which is inhuman.
  • It's just one thing after another. I mean, there's just no end.
  • You need to take a look at it. It's Pokémon with armaments.
  • I'm just by myself. I'm not like some of these marks that that, you know, have little helpers or guys that just want to be famous or fake you know. I just go out there and I do my stuff, you know? And I do it to the best of my ability. That's all I can do.
  • I'm grateful for it. I'm grateful for you guys.
  • I'm not a big massive Euro gamer. So, you know, I stayed away from a lot of stuff. But it's stuff that I think I'm going to like and usually I'm pretty right about those things.
  • If you do that, that's that's the best thing that you could ever do for me.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is just the exhibit hall. uh open from 10 to 6 each day uh except for Sunday open 10 to 4 during the 4 day gaming convention
  • I definitely want to show these displays cuz they Yeah, very nice.
  • They have a horrible system this year. Very slow.
  • It's crazy how like can't just walk up and down each one.
  • So, we have to hurry. and let's see if we can do it.
  • So, for anyone who's not a Dungeon Crawler, Carl fan is probably so confused right now.
  • Too many games, not enough time. Too many games, not enough shopping bags.
  • It's like scary, but still awesome.

Overall sentiment (raw)

Pros
  • Great production value
  • Impressive monster miniatures (especially Strahd and Baba Lysaga)
  • Artwork perfectly captures the gloomy atmosphere
  • Easy to read boards and iconography
  • Dark gifts offer new powers
  • Asymmetrical monsters provide unique puzzles
  • Monsters are well-connected to D&D/Ravenloft lore
  • Variable difficulty with number of monsters
  • Player roles with D20 rolls add unpredictability without being overwhelming
  • Fantasy-themed with a gothic atmosphere
Cons
  • Cardboard standees sometimes don't fit right
  • Drawbacks associated with dark gifts are different from other Horrified games, and host is unsure if he likes it
  • High reliance on luck (dice rolls, item draws, tokens, timing)
  • Careful planning can feel less impactful due to luck
  • Can be frustrating when the board state changes rapidly, even off-turn
  • More players can significantly drag game length
  • Objectives require a lot of running around and engaging monsters
  • Monster deck turning against players can lead to constant reacting rather than executing strategy
Thematic elements
  • gothic horror, terror, monstrous allies
  • Barovia, Ravenloft (gothic horror)
Comparison games
  • Spirit Island
  • Pandemic
  • Pandemic Legacy
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Asymmetric Player Powers (Monsters) — Each monster has unique mechanics and behaviors, like Strahd stalking the board, Baba Lysaga's walking hut, and the Gulthias tree spreading corruption.
  • cooperative play — The game is a cooperative board game where players work together against the game.
  • Dice Rolling — There are 'a lot of dice rolls' in the game, and rolling a D20 determines special abilities, adding unpredictability.
  • Item collection — Objectives often require 'running around the map collecting specific items'.
  • Risk-reward — The 'dark gifts' introduce a 'risk reward mechanism' where players accept corruption for new powers with drawbacks.
  • Variable player powers — Features new hero classes and player roles with special abilities determined by D20 rolls.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This one probably aims to be the darkest of the Horrified yet.
  • Luck is probably one of those big ones. It's a huge part of this game, especially when you're working cooperatively together and you're trying to strategize.
  • Every combination is a different experience and you're going to sort of have to adapt your strategy to whatever monsters are in the game.
  • I think I would still recommend the original Horrified, the first one uh with those classic monsters to new players. It's a little easier to get into and understand what's going game wise and from turn to turn. But for Ravenloft, I think it's going to shine for you if you already like the system and you're fan of this new gothic theme.

Quotes (from this video)
  • And so I'm really interested in Horrified Ravenloft and I think it's four new monsters and it's still like in a D&D theme and I really like the last D&D Horrified.
  • So that was a whirlwind tour of a whole bunch of games we're interested in checking out.
  • And there are so many more games that there are so many games at UKGE. We can't possibly know about all of them so please do let us know about the ones you think we missed the ones you think other folks would be interested in.
  • So, we will have Shakespeare the card game on sale.

Quotes (from this video)
  • We actually really enjoyed the turtle decks.
  • Too many tabs. Close some of these things.
  • Wow, that is not really helping.
  • I I kind of need to hear what's going on.
  • Um, I guess I could have him run it. It'd be kind of dull.
  • I did work on the uh collar. I kind of feel like I need to do a little bit more dark uh up into the V's of the fur.
  • It's pretty cool. I'm really excited for Deborah on that.
  • So, we mostly buy the games that we do on the show.
  • Well, we did the first level, but at a higher
  • This is not fun.
  • The way you do it for, um, at least the machine we use now, um, and we've always done that, we we, uh, use a, um, box that converts HDMI to um, dang it, paint is on the wrong side again.
  • My goal is to finish wave one for everybody that I have.
  • I fractured my heel a year and three months uh you and nine months ago.
  • And so, uh, so how many how much characters I have to paint? Oh, I have so many to paint, Chris.
  • But you get less brush strokes. And then what I do for the final thing, so I guess essentially it's going to be two stages since I'm doing two thin coats, um, is I also use a speed paint or contrast paint over this.
  • So, my goal is to get back around roughly before it's dry.
  • And that's 100% valid.
  • But you can see here it's rubbed through here. Hold on. It's rubbed through here a bit, but it's smooth and it looks pretty good.
  • Yeah, this one's actually pretty good already.
  • So, the rim of the base look. It looks really quite good.
  • My fingers need to be cleaned.
  • Wow, that black paint just coming off from my fingers too.
  • Boy, that is not a good intensity for these.
  • Well, awesome. Thanks for joining me today.
  • Thanks for putting up with the little technical glitches.
  • It's a Kenner nomination. I'm not sure. I don't know what will win.
  • Let's see here. Uh following. Hooray.
