Gingerbread House - Playthrough & Review
hi everyone my name is moni and i'm naveen from before you play and welcome to day number 12 of our 12 days of board games congratulations you have made it to the very end or in case you're just tuning in today maybe you're just seeing this video also merry christmas yes merry christmas everyone yeah so when we say day 12 every single day leading up to christmas we've showcased a different game or talked about games and so today is the very final day today we are doing gingerbread house designed by phil walker harding and published by lookout games and we are going to play it today yeah so this is a little bit different from the rest of the 11 days that we've done so far uh yesterday we put out a top 10 list which was also a little bit of curveball and today we're doing an actual play through so this is a game that came out in 2018 that we had demoed at essen spiel and and immediately fell in love with it yeah it's a puzzly game and uh so what we're going to do is we're going to show you how to play it we're going to do the play through and a short little review at the end but as per usual we'd like to kindly please ask that you turn on your klingon subtitles just in case you make anybody's mistakes and if you enjoy content like this and would like to see more please consider subscribing and with that we are going to dive right in so if you please direct your attention to the center of the table we are all set up here for our two player game of gingerbread house now we're gonna do this a little bit differently i'm gonna just kind of go over a brief overview and then we're gonna teach the specifics as we play the game sure the general theme of this game is we are playing as witches and if you know the fairy tale hansel and gretel what does the witch want to do the witch wants to lure these fairy tale characters to their house and put them in the oven yeah so it's not not a very happy story uh so today we are going to be doing the same we're going to be trying to lure these characters into our gingerbread house so that we can celebrate the holidays we're not going to put them in the oven and so the way that the game works is we have our own personal draw pile of 15 of these tiles and the tiles look like this they're technically gingerbread tiles they're kind of like domino style where there are two of them on one tile each round we're going to be putting one of these out onto our board essentially developing our own gingerbread house so we're going to put them sort of like this the main rule is it has to be all laying flat you cannot have kind of like this deal no crooked and you cannot completely cover a tile with just another tile it has to be always in like a crisscross fashion yep because that is not a stable way to build a house and so whenever you place a new tile there are symbols that are going to be shown on your board you get to do the effect of both symbols that you're covering up and so if it's if it's any of these symbols that show gingerbread because i believe there are four colors of gingerbread and so whenever you cover them you actually get these pieces from the supply because you're going to be turning them in in order to attract these fairytale characters that are all in a line right here thematically you're luring them with the treats these are the type of treats that they're looking for that's right each of these fairytale characters here has a certain combination of the gingerbread pieces that you need to turn in in order to lure them so after taking your turn by placing one of these out then you can optimally lure as many of these as you want and these are going to essentially score your points because at the bottom left-hand corner of each of these cards tells you the number of points it's going to be worth at the end of the game there are a few other symbols as well that'll let you do certain things like getting more of these stairway tiles and stairway tiles are a way for you to help build onto the next level these arrow symbols allow you to exchange a gingerbread piece that you have for one from the supply these cage looking symbols will allow you to take a fairytale character from the lineup and essentially save it so you'd put it in one of your two uh jail slots and now you've uh you've jailed this character so you reserved it for yourself only and anytime you cover up two of the exact same symbol you get to do it three times there's a little bit more to it than that but we'll get into it as we play the game the last kind of bit of information is you can build several levels of your house and so as soon as you complete an entire floor then you get to take one of these bonus cards here we didn't mention it but they're actually two different uh modes of play there's like the introductory game where these are all flipped over and all they show are points and then there's a standard game where these are all have different like powers like end game scoring or like things that you can do in the moment and so these are gonna do various things for you this one here for example gives you two points per human character and so at the top right hand corner of each of these characters it'll show you if the human or a fantasy character like this has a dragon so it's like a fantasy character this card over here lets you get points depending on the number of bad tempered characters you have and that's on the top left hand corner like this is a very angry looking face and this is like a happy face so it all just kind of depends on uh your strategy and those are generally most of the rules for this game there are a few like tiny rules here and there that we'll discuss as we play uh if ever you don't want to actually place one of your tiles out onto your board during your turn you can discard it to take two stairway tiles and once all players have placed all of their tiles then the game will end and we go into end game scoring which is essentially all the points from your fairy tale characters as well as your bonus cards and one point for every two gingerbread uh pieces that you have left over numbers most points wins yep that's it so that is the entire game we're going to do just a tiny bit of cleanup and then we're going to get started okay so we are ready to play our game uh we have to figure out who's going to go first shall we uh oh that one okay ready oh yeah okay because i go first monique gets to choose one of these fantasy characters to cage so we start the game with one stairway tile each we don't start with any gingerbread and uh the one thing i didn't mention during the teach is when we select tiles from our draw pile we're actually going to have a display of three at any given time that are face up so we must choose from the three that are face up right so we have that all set up already and so now we get to choose our starting jailed character from the lineup so just so you kind of know what the bonus cards are this is gonna get you two points per human character at the end of the game this one is two points per character that has that specific type of gingerbread showing in the requirement the magic wand gets two points per character with at least six gingerbreads that are required so like this one would get you two points at the end of the game the broom will get you points depending on how many of those bad tempered characters you have so if you have five of them it's a max of 12 points the rolling pin is two points per character showing the heart gingerbread just like this but for the heart and our sixth one is the baking oven and so this is a little bit different upon taking this card you're going to um get that green gingerbread type from the supply for every number of those that are actively showing on your house and then you would flip the card over and it'll be worth two points at the end of the game so there are a lot more of these cards in the box these are just the six that we're playing with so now with that in mind i can try to decide which character i want to take i'm gonna start the game with rapunzel rapunzel is gonna is gonna go into my jail here and she needs uh two hearts and two of the blue ones which will be good for this she's also a human character so that'll be good for that so we'll see anyway that is my that's what i'm taking and this is not refill until naveen takes his well i think uh tom thumb looks nice he looks very doable so i'm gonna take this one and put it right over there we'll just start off okay nice and easy so let's refill we have the unicorn this is a non-human character and it's it's nice tempered and then we have prince charming who is a human character and also nice tempered perfect so naveed is going to start us off all right round one which tile are you going to place unless you want stairs if i just covered this up right away blue and heart that just satisfies tom thumb that's true right away right away okay so i'm gonna put this one right over the top of this uh so i'm gonna cover up a heart and a blue okay so you go right there in your heart and by the way we can only hold on to 10 total resources or gingerbread just to keep that in mind yep and four stairs and four stairs total so i have covered that up and now i have the option of do i want to satisfy this let's just do it yeah i'm going to satisfy it so that was easy you go out so one heart and one blue yes and so now naveen is going to get how many points two points two points at the end of the game but also uh the thing about trapping characters is every single time you trap a character you get to place one of these wild tokens out onto your boards and so this is literally a wild it counts as any symbol that you want to be once it's covered up if you cover up two wild symbols that allow you to do three of anything it doesn't have to be the exact same thing and so this is something he has to do right away and because he's covering up a symbol when he places it he gets to do the symbol that he covered like yeah i gained the resources symbol so i will go ahead and cover up it looks like hearts are pretty prevalent so i'm just going to cover up this heart right over here i'll take a heart all right there you go thank you um and that is per character so if naveen were to trap several characters in one turn then he would get he would have to place that many of the weld tokens okay to finish my turn i have to put out a tile into my display right over here fantastic all right so now it is me and rapunzel needs blue and pink but maybe i'm not in a hurry to do so what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna place this tile right here just like that okay and so this is going to get me a blue uh gingerbread and it'll let me trap a character not tropic character it'll let me jail a character okay but you only have a spot for two so i only have a spot for two you can discard them if ever you decide that you made mistakes in life and so i'm gonna i'm gonna jail prince charming because uh prince charming is worth eight points and it's a non-human character there's a lot of things going on with prince charming so there's that and i don't think i can trap anybody so that ends my turn i'm going to put one of these out and refill the character supply jackalope ah interesting five points that's a little bit of everything clearly a non-human character i think but it is bad tempered what happened there he's not happy angry bunny all right i'm going to take this one right here and cover up this green and then that stairway so that gets me a green and a stair token there you go so now i have two of my four that i can have and now i need to do this tile right here perfect okay so i'm going to place this tile and i'm going to have it right here right in the middle so it's covering up a green and a blue and i'm going to take that from the supply one green and one blue and i kind of did that so that i could position my greens next to each other so that i could take several greens at once but i'm still not able to complete anything or yeah nothing so i'm going to end my turn by drawing one of these all right that's me okay so i'm going to take this tile here and what was i going to do with it oh no i'm going to take this tile here okay and place it right over here so that's going to get me um a yellow and then this symbol right here means i get to swap one of my gingerbread i may swap one of them and would you like to one for one see one for one i will swap it i'm gonna take a heart okay okay here you go thank you can you fulfill anything uh no no not yet and i finish up by drawing a tile i always forget there we go perfect okay so i think i'm going to place this one right here so this is going to get me a pink uh heart gingerbread and it'll let me do the exact same thing that naveen was doing by exchanging out a gingerbread and so i'm going to exchange my green one for another heart so that we can fulfill a character finally or attract a character i guess so i put that right there and now i'm going to attract rapunzel so it's two hearts and two of these blue gingerbread uh into the supply she's gonna be worth four points and um now i get to place out a wild token so i'm gonna put this just off to the side here let's put the wild token right there i think that was the most obvious spot because it'll give me a nice flat uh floor so it's going to get me a yellow gingerbread let's do that which was what prince charming needs yup exactly so it's a win-win here all right back to you all right so i like the fact that i have two blue showing and then two green showing so let's go ahead and do something with it okay so uh i think i will cover up these greens right over here so i'm gonna take this one put it like that all right so you get three green greens yeah because there's two of the same symbols so you get an extra one yes there you go two three that is oh bye goodbye all right i'm gonna get you another one oh no here you go thank you yeah and i will draw one more fantastic okay so back to me i'm liking this little combo of yellow that i have going on here so i might as well continue it by placing this one out and um well i guess it doesn't matter hold on okay because i can get the yellow here it's not like i'll be able to get both let's get some pink going i'm gonna place this one instead okay and i'm gonna put it right here like that covering up this yellow and that staircase okay so here's your staircase thank you so i get a staircase and a yellow and you've completed an entire floor i have that's right so because i completed an entire level i could take one of these bonus cards and i think early it is early but i've been kind of selecting my fairy tale characters keeping these in mind so because i already have two fairy tale characters who are human i might as well take this cauldron card which is gonna get me two points per human character at the end of the game so i'm just gonna place it off right there and i'm gonna end my turn by drawing up another one of these so back to you okay i kind of like what you did here so i think i'm going to do the same thing uh let's see i'm going to place this one right over here okay okay and that's going to get me a yellow i'm covering up a yellow and i get to cage so i'm gonna cage the devil right over here oh so the devil requires three hearts three blue and is a meanie yeah bad tempered in a good mood non-human eight points correct pretty nice so i was able to um to take that because of the cage and now i've filled out a complete uh floor and so i'm gonna take this one the rolling pin it's two points per character showing hearts oh nice yep so i'll take it yeah you already have two points right there and you can complete the devil it's another two exactly yep so and that's me awesome and now let me go ahead and fill in my thing this is the king the king just wants a bunch of blue uh i i don't even know what flavor is that examples i don't know uh eight points uh human character and happy all right okay i'm gonna place this tile um right over here covering the double green so that i can take three green gingerbread pieces oh so you're one short of prince charming i am unfortunately one two three okay all right so that was three and i think that's it i can't well i'm kind of like tunnel visioned for the person i jailed but there are all these other fairy tale characters that we could be fulfilling and i don't have anything for them so that's okay moving on all right that's me okay so i'm gonna go ahead and place this actually not that it's going to be this one and i will cover up like that all right so that's one pink heart one heart for sure and then also a wild of my choice so i will take i'll take a heart oh hi it's too hard all right yes heart stars and horseshoes yeah that's fun i don't know but really heart stories and horseshoes didn't eat cereal as a kid huh lucky charms oh okay very good yeah uh but i will be satisfying oh the unicorn the unicorn needs three hearts hence why i needed to get some more hearts so that's three and then three green two oh three nice and the unicorn is a happy character fantasy character worth eight points nice but because i have this rolling pin thing going on here i need characters out of hearts yeah so there you go so right now i have two characters in my belly oh no in your home okay and then sitting down for a feast no wait because you fulfilled a character oh yeah it is your lucky day these well tiles are awesome that's right and it's also mandatory so and they must do it yeah i'm gonna place it out all right and i'm gonna place it right over here taking a blue there you go thank you you're welcome all right so a new fairy tale character comes out i have to put out a new title and we have a fairy who is also clearly not human but she's happy looking for hearts and they require lots of hearts yeah i'm so glad i took this thing yeah good job i'm going to place this tile right here right in the middle a smack dab and it's going to cover a double yellow so i'm going to get three yellow gingerbread so here we go are you going to satisfy prince charming also yeah okay so the three that you're taking well three of the five of the yellows that i have are gonna go to pinch charming yes so now that i put that down i'm going to satisfy or attract this character right here so it costs three yellow two three and three green one two three and he is uh gonna contribute to my two points per human character worth eight points at the end of the game so i put that right there because i did that i now get a wild token as well to put out and i'm gonna put it out right there because i like to have my wilds next to each other i can plop a staircase there in the future turn and do like a double wild so i put that there and i get to jail a character so what's it looking like i have two yellow unfortunately the king is the only human character i see which is not ideal all right we're gonna go for the golden donkey okay it's a donkey who uh coughs up golden coins i don't really know what fairy tale that looks angry i mean i would be angry too if i were coughing up golden coins all day it's the coffee aspect not the gold part it's not yeah it's not the gold yeah so that ends my turn and we're going to put out a new fairy tale character who happens to be alex alice uh lots of hearts as well just like the fairy but this is a human character and now i put out my last uh tile right there okay back to you okay so this is the first time i'm going to be using a stair we're going to use it in this game and the way it works is you take your stairwell and it's going to cover up any any area that has this little uneven texture here so this is a two stack and this is a one stack so this stair is gonna come right on over here and it's gonna level that playing field so the reason why there's a hole in the middle is you still get the bonus that you're gonna be covering up so i'm gonna go ahead and cover up with this one these two hearts so i get three hearts yeah because he had the heart from here and the heart that he was looking at from through his staircase and to be clear you place a staircase before you place a tile and you can place several it's not limited to one so it's just in order to level that playing field exactly so then you get three hearts you have three hearts some two and three there you go yep oh lots of hearts yes and then i am gonna go ahead and satisfy this jackalope right over here okay so it's gonna cost one of each so heart uh blue yellow and green nice and it's gonna be worth five points and the jackalope is an angry fairy tale character hungry bunny angry hungry bunny i don't know what what made him so bad and then we're gonna but before you do you get to put out one of these yeah that's right nice perfect that is right so i'm gonna put it right over here yes good idea this is a good spot so i get another blue and then now it lines me up with two wilds so then at that point because they're two of the same symbol i can get three of something okay uh so then now i'm gonna fill in my tile we get a new fairy tale character cinderella cinderella we have alice and now we have cinderella so cinderella wants yellows i don't know what yellow uh means to her but it's like cinderella dressed in yellow you know yeah okay so i am also going to use a staircase now and i'm going to place it right in here so that i can put this tile out just like that over your two will help over my two wilds so this is a wild and this is also a well that i'm covering and so because they're two matching wilds i can do three of anything so that's the kind of unique thing about the wild tokens they don't have to be the the exact same action three times it's three of anything so for this action i'm going to take two yellow gingerbread and one uh pink so here's my two yellow one two and my one pink and then now i'm going to attract a character so uh it's it's nice that cinderella kind of came along here because i had a couple of uh gingerbreads that were already on the way i'm satisfying so this is four yellows for cinderella and so she's gonna score me four points but she's also a human character for my bonus card there and because i satisfied or i attracted a character i get to put out a wild tile so you know i don't really like the staircase symbols i might as well cover that up okay so here we go staircase so it still gets me a staircase but now i don't have to worry about you you know wasting a turn just to get stairs sure yeah let's get some stairs now cool uh new tile for you and then we're gonna flip this over okay puss in boots oh happy character the fencing cat that's right awesome um and we're kind of getting down to it we're at least halfway through because this is our final stack of tiles but as a reminder the game ends once all the tiles have been placed or discarded including the three that you have to display 15 rounds total okay so i'm going to cover up this uh this area right here and i will take this heart and put it i don't like my tiles that i have but i'll put it right over here okay and that's going to be a double wild cover up kind of like what monique did and i'm going to take them as three hearts three hearts and then with those three hearts i'm gonna add to these three hearts so it's really six hearts that i have total now there you go and then i'm going to satisfy right away the fairy oh nice so that's all of that right there oh thank you it all goes away it's worth eight points it's a happy fantasy character okay that's me very good and so now you get to place this out yes which is desperate for me right now and i will put this tile right over here so this allows me to swap out are you gonna do that uh or do you want your blue blue is pretty prevalent everywhere so i will just forgo that okay unfortunately so uh new tile for me there we go and you oh we have humpty dumpty humpty dumpty has a little curly hair piece right there i don't know humpty dumpty had hair and so humpty wants a green gingerbread green worth six points at the end of the game happy fairy tale character okay so back to me what am i even working on these days that is a question okay i'm gonna put out another staircase i'm gonna put it right here on top of that lovely heart and i'm gonna put this tile out on top so it's gonna get me three hearts total because there's two uh two hearts showing and so where are these hearts you just spent a ton of them i just one two three and so now i'm going to attract my golden donkey who has been in jail this whole time so it's going to cost four of the heart uh gingerbread and it's going to get me four points at the end of the game this is an angry angry angry character uh but alas he is now part of our crew and so because i placed out or because i attracted a character i get to put out a wildcard oh yeah which i'm going to place right here getting me a blue gingerbread and then i get to claim another bonus card you've completed because i've completed my second level my entire second level here so i think what i want to do humpty dumpty's looking nice here but humpty dumpty requires a lot of green you know this one's not bad yeah right that's exactly what i was thinking i'm gonna take this baking oven and so the way that this works is for every green that i have currently showing which is three i get to take that many of that gingerbread from the supply then i flip it over and it's worth two points at the end of the game so i'm gonna go down yeah green and i am now three green towards humpty dumpty so that's it i'm gonna put out another tile and that ends my turn okay so on my turn i'm gonna be using a stairway so i can level this whole area off so that's the last one of this second level okay and i'm gonna go i'm gonna go this way so i have a couple options i can go this way this way or that way because they're all three unique different tiles right um i will take i'm gonna take this one and cover up like this awesome okay so it's gonna give me a yellow and a wild and so that wild is not specific to gingerbread you can take actions so if you wanted a daily character or exchange you know any of those actions really i'm gonna take a heart oh okay let's take a heart there you go all right oh and hold on before i do that i need to take one of these that's right because you've leveled out your your floor okay i'm gonna take this magic wand here this gets you two points per character with at least six gingerbread so i'm working on that i have one two three three of them so far so i'll be worth six points yeah so sweet if i can do more then it'll be worth more so i will take it it's my second of my three and then now i will go ahead and flip this over okay very good wow we are getting there okay i'm going to put out my my last staircase which kind of makes me nervous and i'm going to put it right here because i do want to fulfill a humpty dumpty over there i'm going to place this out and as a reminder i couldn't do this because this is its own tile and you can't just completely cover a tile right so the reason why we're doing kind of the zigzag is because you have to so i'm going to place this like this covering both greens which gets me three green from the supply so one two three and now i'm going to attract humpty dumpty which requires five greens so i have my three here and two that i already had in possession of and so humpty dumpty is gonna get me six points it's a non-human character which is not good for this card but you'll take it yeah done oh you need your wild i need to put out a wild that's right so what are you working towards i'm gonna place it right here on top of this pre-existing wild just so i can kind of level out that that part of the the floor and gosh i don't i didn't have a plan up to this point so i know i need human characters you know it's a little different yeah i'm gonna take the one heart one heart for that because it's something at least i have a variety here sure now put out my next top okay next one oh more green this is a bad wolf big bad wolf this is an angry character it requires a lot of green it does and it was eight points so back to you back to me okay so i'm gonna put this one over these two blues right here okay so that is gonna get me three blue one two three there you go and i could technically satisfy put put some boots over there but i think i'm gonna be working towards this devil over here really because i have these hearts lined up yep so saying i could go for it i'm saying you can uh i'm gonna i'm gonna draw nighttime yeah i don't i'm not set up for that at all and it doesn't really do much else for me that alice can't do so hmm see now i wish i had stairs stairs are great okay i'm gonna go i'm gonna take this piece i'm gonna place it right here so that maybe i can do like a three stair in the future yeah since i'm so all your stair worries will be it will be good yeah because i'm in a stair drought so sure let's do this and it's going to let me take some whatever i want and exchange a a piece from my supply yeah let's take that so the heart will be your wild taking my heart and then i'm going to exchange this blue for a green for over a green yes switching it up with the big bad wolf yeah maybe that was the old switcheroo yeah and that's it so i actually don't even know if i'll be able to do what i want to do in this amount of time but for sure see i only have two tiles left in there yeah five five more rounds five more turns yeah exactly three plus the two that we have here one might be a throw away too so well i'm gonna stakes i'm gonna line this up so these are two separate tiles right there okay and i'm gonna get three hearts okay one two and three and this devil must finally come home so we have three hearts oh finally three blue and now it's back to the drawing board in prison for so long well it's it's really important for me because it requires six gingerbread in the magic wand one six so this is technically a ten point card eight for this plus the two extras it's actually plus two plus another two yeah that's right so well a twelve point card that's a big one yeah all right you have a well-deserved well done if i do this just right i can put it here no kidding covering up that third level are you getting a great green which i don't really care too much about green but i'll take that and then now that this is do you have any bad temperatures i do i have the devil and i have this angry uh wow so that's not bad and then i only have one so far that requires yellow so i'm not gonna take this i'm gonna take this one right here oh your stinker you stinker i am stinky okay this is gonna go then admission yes so now you're maxed out those are your three bonuses that's the one that's good for you though that i left that because you have some yellow going on too i do i don't know what i'm doing perfectly so um draw your tongue tile no stairs that's okay i'm not mad um i'm gonna get some stairs yeah i'm gonna get some stairs i'm gonna take i'm gonna take this one okay and i'm just gonna lay it uh on top of these two staircases and so it's just gonna get me three stairs three stairways um so oh sorry look at that oh thank you there's one two and you already grabbed yourself i did thank you thank you sure and so i can't complete anything i'm just going to draw my tile to end my turn basically back to the drawing board so yeah what what can you do in four turns you think i think i will take this one and put the cage going this way covering up these two greens here that's gonna get me three green okay one two and three three yep there you go and just put it there and flip over a new one okay that's me okay so i feel like now you're going for the bad wolf and you'll probably get it before me so it's time to abandon ship abandoned bed wolf okay i'm going to place this tile and i'm going to place the stairway right here so that i can put it on top and i'm going to take a pink heart and exchange one of my greens for another heart because we're going to abandon ship on that bad wolf here we go i'm one short though of alice but then it's my turn all right so i'm placing my last tile out these are our last three tiles that are going to be available to us so good luck oh i didn't even complete my last uh i hate that bonus card okay so i'm gonna just place this tile here covering up a blue and a wild okay there's your blue blue and i will i will just take a blue as my other uh as my wild here is your blue yes how many yeah one two three four five six seven eight nine nine ah okay and that's it because there's no more of the flipping over of the tiles so let's do this i'm going to place this tile here it's going to get me a green and a wild so i'm going to use the wild to get a heart because that is going to be my last heart for alice so green and heart and now i'm going to attract alice by discarding my five three four five heart gingerbread okay and yay so she's worth six points and she's a human character which i need so it's really worth eight points and now i can put out a wild tile so what do i need what's what's out i wish i could see that next card let's just go for blue oh yeah maybe let's get some blue i mean there's no other blue showing so might as well take the blue now and because i finally completed that third level i think yeah it looks like it yeah i can take this so this is going to get me two points at the end of the game per character that have the yellow gingerbread as a requirement which is only two of them so far so not the new one's coming i think this is gonna be yellow please oh i said take the yellows it is so much hello there's no way i'm gonna get what is that three four five seven you have so many yellow cover-ups but only two more turns yeah i know this is a basilisk by the way and it is so angry although it looks happy you know you have enough stairways oh wow you could have done it had you taken a yellow and then done a double cover i know i don't know the best list was coming to gamble all right so it's my turn and now how many do i have here one two three four five six seven eight nine so you can never go beyond 10 but you can discard down gingerbread so i am going to go ahead and do that i will put this here and so now i'm going to discard out these two okay and so that gives me seven so i'll take uh three green and i'm going to satisfy this bad wolf so that three green that you're holding plus these three right here it's going to be six green total six straight total yeah that's the bad wolf i'll take it and that's gonna be worth eight points it's an angry person so uh so i have the card that wants angry people nice and i have the card that wants at least six gingerbread points you are comboing hard over there i'm going for it you attracted a character you did you deserve this wild tile so i'll just take this and place it right over here covering up a blue oh so good so you're going to be able to uh you can actually fulfill that now can i fill that yeah you can attract it you can check as many characters as you want you do them one at a time so you do your wild tiles in between and because he was able to get that you can is that do you want to attract some boots well i'm looking at the king i'm looking at the king maybe the maybe i can uh with one more tile do you think you will be able to get two i don't think i can gingerbread unfortunately i don't think i can so i'm going to take puss all right in boots in boots okay and that's another one right there for me and another well towel another wild title so at the end of the game it's going to be one point for every two gingerbread left so if you only have one more turn left and you know you're not able to fulfill anybody you might as well try to get into that some gingerbread tokens right yep so let's go ahead and put this one right over here for another blue giving me another blue there you go there we go fantastic so now we get two of these please oh more yellow that's perfect oh no i only i don't know oh yes it is perfect actually yeah this is a griffin which is as uh sort of a bird yes it's a big bird and uh six points not a human obviously but it's happy and our last one here is an ogre oh it's picking its nose it's a booger right there so it's worth eight points um and it's an angry character too bad you don't have more of those yeah can you get two blue and two green with that one all right wishful thinking ask not okay so i mean maybe the ogre is nice can you get it no so i'm going to play this one and i'm going to use my staircase right in the middle there so that i can cover up two of these yellows and i'm just gonna take three yellow for the supply clearly i'm not going to be able to attract any of these characters yet not yet by setting it up i'm setting it up that's right so now back to you okay i think for me it's just a uh for every two leftover gingerbread right we said it's a it's a point so i'm just gonna plop this anywhere earlier definitely not here because that's not gonna get me yeah don't do that so let's go ahead and do this so i'll take a yellow and a wild let's go with a blue one and that is your game that's my game so i'm done done so your turn my turn so i'm going to place this last one and i need to do it in a way that i can get uh three yellow oh yeah these two yellow is what you need like i could do it there and get two yellow but let's just use my last staircase because these are not worth any points at the end of the game oops there's a hair and if i put it right there i can get three yellow which would give me like an even number for that point so that's exactly where you want to do that yeah so three three yellow which i mean three of them i'm going to use towards this with two more from my supply for five total to attract the griffin oh actually i get to put out a wild tile so there's my griffin nice and here's my wild tile and we're just gonna use it to cover up this heart so so yeah yeah number no i have not that's okay but that's it the game is over that's it so now we're going to go into our endgame scoring which is really simple it's just count up the number of points that you get from your character cards and then count up the points that you get from your bonuses and then the two for uh every gingerbread yes so let's do the character cards first uh do you want to go first is you at first sure okay so we have 4 8 that's 12 plus 5 is 17 plus another 8 is 25 plus another 8 is 33 plus another 8 is i'm losing count 41 21 uh and then 42 43 so 43 total so 43 over there yep uh so i have six plus six is twelve plus six eighteen four is twenty-two plus four is twenty-six plus eight thirty-four plus four is thirty-eight i'm gonna write that down so 43-38 there's a score sheet somewhere but uh i misplaced it temporarily okay and then our bonus cards so you wanna do yours yeah so i have the broom here uh i get points per bad character or bad tempered character so i have she's angry one minute so that's three of them time uh according to this chart is i get six points nice okay so six it's a six and then uh two points per character that wants hearts so one two three four five it says a max of 12 so i get 10 points nice that's 16 total and then this is two points per character that requires uh six gingerbread so that's one two three four so another uh eight points so that's 16 plus eight that's another 24 points so wow 43 becomes 24 points i'm not going to top that that becomes 67 definitely a lot not and you definitely not going to top that but let's see me try okay so uh my rolling pin is two points per character that shows uh the yellow gingerbread so that's three of them okay so it's six points this is just two points that's eight total two points per human character one two three four eight plus two is ten sixteen points so sixteen plus what did i have before yeah thirty-eight thirty-eight plus sixteen fifty-four fifty-four yeah fifty-four plus the leftover oh yeah so you get an extra two points and extra two points and so do you so 56 to 69.
oh i did it i took down the champ you were the the the master wicked witch or maybe you're the nicest witch because everybody wanted to come to your house i showed them yeah christmas feast that's true but that's it that's it we did it we finished the game naveen was victorious good job you deserve that because naveen had all the cards that required so many gingerbread i went for it i kind of went for the cheapies um kind of kind of i mean i got some fives in there but you definitely you definitely put in the work so had you gone and got that basically by just taking a random yellow what's the difference in score there you would have got an extra what six points well ten no it would have been an extra four because my the griffin was six an extra four four points so it still wouldn't have done it yeah yeah you did you did really well in the comboing and came out worked out overall solid game on your part good job thank you appreciate it oh a double double high five i think it's maybe our first high five i don't know so anyway that is gingerbread house by phil walker harding who is a an esteemed designer and that is also the end of our 12 days of board games the finale it was uh quite a ride yes let me tell you a a video a day for any amount of days is is challenging you might have noticed that we were wearing the same clothes behind the scenes we filmed maybe more than one in a day but still the ability to put out a video a day it's pretty tough yeah but let's talk about this game yeah this is a very cute theme you know um when when we initially saw it uh a couple of years ago i i saw it actually before we went to essen because there were like reviews at the dice tower and i thought wow that is an intriguing theme for me because i'm always on the lookout for good uh games that that have like a christmasy kind of theme yep and even though this isn't necessarily christmas themed it's more fairy tale it's just like the gingerbread yeah building a gingerbread house has that kind of feel to it so i really adore this theme what do you think about it yeah it's good i like the fact that you're taking on the role as a witch trying to attract most games you're the hero you're trying to you know avoid conflict or you're trying to defeat the bad guys yeah this time i like i like in games where you're taking on the role from a different kind of perspective and you're the bad guy so it's it's light you know yes this is an abstraction game those are always going to be pasted on but the fairytale characters all of it is so endearing um the production value is nice these tiles are very thick very nice very thick cardboard and so it's all very cute it just makes me feel happy right just playing it yeah and design wise also because the rules of the game um are that you're not allowed to completely superimpose over the same exact so when these are are stacked you can easily see that the thick line is the differential first right right two thin lines coming together you know you know your rule set here yeah so that means that they really took note and made sure that that quality was there player account scales pretty well uh in higher player accounts you're going to be buying for the characters it's still only the same four that are in the market display so that is going to be a bit more tough it does turn over a little bit more but other and so are the bonus cards right like uh racing for certain bonus cards that are going to really help you and like making sure you complete those levels it's a little bit harder but uh it scales really well it plays really well too i actually really love it yeah i think we played it at all four player accounts and felt no difference between them uh replayability is is great because of the bonus cards there are a lot more bonus cards that we didn't play with and so there are some bonus cards that give you points depending on how many levels you've completed and some of those are like ridiculously difficult to achieve i mean you're pretty much just your goal is going to be pretty much just completing levels right so replayability is there yeah there are two different modes of play so for families or just people who don't want to have to deal with the bonus aspect of it you can just flip them over and they're just gonna be worth points two points so it's kind of like a race to to complete those levels exactly so that you can score the most amount of points but overall in terms of mechanics and just the overall of this game what are your thoughts yeah it's good quick in quick out easy to teach easy to learn i always like games like that phil walker harding seems to do a lot of those types of games yeah um so yeah it's really enjoyable for me yeah it's in our collection we like it yeah yeah it's been in our collection since 2018.
so uh this is very puzzly it's got that abs it scratches that abstract itch for me and very fast but also like not too much of a brain burn yeah you know you're thinking in a puzzly way but not so much that it causes like significant ap like other abstract games tend to yep so this is just kind of just like a clean clean design clean experience and uh one that i really enjoy so anyway that is gingerbread house by phil walker harding and also the conclusion of our series so thank you all so much for watching and for joining along on all these 12 days if you if you're able to do so we really hope that you have a wonderful holiday season please be safe and please be happy and enjoy you know your time and we will see you in the new year thank you all so much for watching the video hope you enjoyed it we'll see you guys next time thank you thanks bye
