Bargain Quest + Sunk Costs Expansion
[Music] hi everyone my name is moani and i'm naveen from before you play and welcome to day number seven of our 12 days of board games we are featuring a game a day today it's bargain quest and its expansion the sunk cost expansion this is designed by jonathan ying and published by renegade games there's a lot of expansions but today we're going to highlight this one after we go over the base game that's right and so in this game it has kind of an interesting theme we are shop owners who sell items for heroes who are going out on adventures to slay monsters yeah we're not the heroes no we're just the people who supply them that's right and so today we're going to show you around the base game as well as a little bit on the sunk cost expansion and then give you some of our thoughts towards the end so let's get started all right as you can see here we are set up for a two-player game of the base game of bargain quest we each have our own shopkeeper boards we have our two starting heroes who are ready to come to our stores to purchase some items and we also have our deck of monsters so the very first thing that happens in this game is we reveal the first monster each game has three monsters there are several that come in the game but you only play with three of them and they are of three different levels uh what's the third monster is completely defeated by these heroes and that is the end of the game that or if all the heroes are defeated that's right and it's a little bit more of a morbid way to end the game you know what i mean and so like where i mentioning the object of the game is for us as shopkeepers to sell items to these heroes so that they are well equipped to defeat these monsters so the very first thing that happens in a round is we get a hand of item cards and so to start the round we're actually going to be drafting these item cards we each have a hand of four of them and we're just gonna do a standard style draft you're going to choose one to keep and they're going to pass the rest to your opponents and kind of keep on doing this until everybody has a hand of four item cards then you're going to choose one of the item cards from your hand to put face down in your display area you kind of think of it as putting an item in the window of your store the display window exactly to entice people to come into your store right yeah just picture us like on a big boulevard and there's you know all these different shops and my thing is in my window your thing is in your window we're trying to get these heroes to show up in our place that's right and so item cards look like this they have a few things kind of going on on the cards at the top left hand corner is the price of the item that the hero needs to pay in order to acquire it below that there's a symbol that stands for the class symbol and those represent the different types of heroes who are allowed to use this item yeah there's four uh different colors there's red yellow blue and green that's right at the very bottom of the card tells you the ability or the effect that it will give the hero and at the left hand down here is the number of hearts that kind of determines which player among us is going to be able to lure the hero first yeah who has the priority and so face up here on the table we have two different heroes and one is from the red the other from the yellow class and each hero already has their starting amount of money in their purse this is how much money they have to spend when they go to your store so we're just going to go ahead and choose a card for our display you put it face down and once everybody is ready we're going to simultaneously reveal our display so flip that over and so i played here a an ancient armor card that is for the yellow class and it has four hearts what do you have over there okay i have a wind scroll it's for the red class and it's two hearts ah nice and to be clear we are not going to be able to sell these cards these cards are strictly for the display for the purpose of luring these heroes so afterwards starting with the player who played the card with the most number of hearts we're going to lure these heroes now you can only lure the hero that is of the same class as the item that you played so because i have more hearts i'm going to go ahead and lure this with cleric into my shop well this is the last one remaining so the mage is going to come and come to my shop then you go ahead and sell your items and you're gonna be selling items that are from your hand to this uh this hero so i'm gonna go ahead and sell this trident that costs 15 coins to this cleric and so the money from the cleric is gonna go into my own supply and at the end of the game you're gonna be able to exchange money for points and so once the hero is ready then you kind of put them off to the very front here because they're gonna go on an adventure okay and then i would do the same so i'm selling i have a second windscroll so i'm gonna be selling this windscroll to this mage right over here and then i'm gonna make change how much does it cost it costs five so i gain five bucks for my store and then the mage is gonna keep the other 15 change that's right the mage can take this along with them on their little adventure then you take your display card back into your hand and now it is time for these heroes to go on an adventure so before they actually go and battle this monster each hero is going to be given an adventure card from the adventure deck and these cards are just going to be status modifiers they have a wide range of different things that are shown on these cards sometimes they're very good sometimes they're very bad once that's done then each hero is going to one at a time try to at least wound this monster and so the stats on the heroes that we're going to be comparing are the heroes attack value which is anything that has this like double axe against the monster's toughness value which is a left-hand symbol right here as well as the hero's defense value which is the shield versus their strength if the hero's attack value meets or exceeds that value right there then the hero successfully wounds the monster and they go ahead and place one of those on the monster itself after attacking the monster we have to check to see if the hero actually survives this encounter by comparing the defense versus their strength and so same thing if it meets or exceeds that value then the hero survives if it doesn't then the hero gets defeated and you're basically just going to discard everything having to do with this hero the hero goes home yes for a long time they go to net and so as a player you're going to get points if your hero successfully wounds the monster and if they survive the encounter so in this situation because naveen's hero successfully wounded this monster and survived the encounter we're assuming we didn't actually do the math then davine is going to get two points as the shopkeeper because he actually gets credit for that success for attacking defense once all heroes have gone then we're going to check to see if the monster survives if you have the number a number of wounds on the monster equal to the number of players then the monster is defeated and each hero gets the amount of money at the bottom right hand corner of the chest which in this case is 20 coins if the monster survives then this monster stays here and each hero gets these 10 coins and the reason why you are giving the heroes more money is because the heroes that survive stay for the next round and they need more money in order to buy more stuff from you yeah they were happy with your services so they want to return to the shops where they were successful yep once this phase is done then us as shopkeepers move on to upgrading our shops so during this phase we have the ability to either purchase an upgrade for a shop or to hire employees and so there is an entire deck of employees and they all do different things they're usually one-time use abilities in terms of the shop upgrades there are two main types of upgrades they're the display ones that allow you to just hold one additional item in your display which is going to make it more powerful for you if you want to go first in lowering these these heroes and the other one is a storage capacity upgrade because at the end of the round you're going to be able to choose one item card left from your hand to store here for the next round everything else gets discarded so with this upgrade it increases that storage by one then you end the round by storing one of your item cards in your shop area and you begin again by dealing out a fresh hand of four item cards once the third and final monster is defeated or if there are no more hero cards in the deck then you go into final scoring and so any of these star uh chips that you acquired over the course of the game they're all going to equate to points yeah one victory point per and in addition for every 10 coins that you have left over you're going to get one point you as the shopkeeper not what's left over on heroes but for you as the owner of the store right and at that point whoever has the most points wins that is pretty much the entire game of bargain quest now we're also mentioning that this game has a few expansions out it's not just a sunk class expansion but we did want to showcase a little bit of the suncoast expansion today it's the newest one it is the newest one that's right and so with the new sunk cost expansion a lot of the theme is now more tailored to the seas because uh you are now nautical nautical yes nautical heroes that's right so you're gonna have new monsters and they're all very much so uh the kraken the giant kraken you're gonna have new heroes and new items but the main thing that this new expansion brings is that this new a replacement for the draft yes these are ship cards here and our ship tiles and basically the way this works is instead of doing a standard draft like we described earlier uh it changes the way we acquire item cards and so basically what's gonna happen is you're gonna put out ships equal to the amount of players so in our case we would have two uh one item card will be secretly placed face down on each one of these so we don't know exactly what's on there so each player has two item cards in their hand and on your turn you can either add to the ships or claim a ship and so what happens is with the two cards you must play both of them so in this case i would play one here and then i have the option of playing the other one to the same ship face up or to the other one so let's go ahead and just put it on the other one after that i would draw up two cards then it would be my turn and to be clear each ship has a maximum item limit of four cards so once there are four cards on a ship then you can no longer add to them so now that's my turn i can either choose to add my two cards to the ships as well or i can claim one of them if i choose to claim a ship each ship has some kind of benefit on it that's going to be my benefit to use for this round only because at the end of the round i'm going to ditch this ship also i would have to discard the rest of the cards in my hand so i have to make sure that these are no longer important and uh what i what i want on the ship is really what i want right and so that is pretty much uh the biggest part of this new expansion it completely eliminates the draft and it replaces it with a little bit more of a strategic way to obtain those item cards and a way to have those those new benefits exactly yeah but there's still a card face down so you don't know exactly what's on that ship fully um that gives you extra abilities like you said and so it kind of just changes up that draft sometimes you can draft some cards in the base game and not really be too happy with what you have this way you can kind of mitigate it just a little bit more yeah it's a little bit more of an informed decision yes we also feel though that it is probably a little bit more useful at higher player counts i don't know necessarily if i would jump to the sunk cost expansion at a two-player game but this expansion does integrate with the other expansions such as the black market and there are revised rules or so in the rulebook that show you how to play with them and so that is bargain quest in a nutshell yeah uh all in all this is this is a a very card heavy game so it's it's not a big box but there are a ton of cards in there it kind of takes up a lot of table space surprisingly it does yeah it does but uh the theme is fantastic this is one of my favorite themes that i've seen in a game this year so you like the idea of not being the hero but not supplying the hero oh yeah yeah i don't i would want to be the hero it was pretty unique yeah but i would want to give the hero enough to survive right the artwork is fantastic the components are very very high quality it's quite light and family friendly yeah this i would say this is a good family weight game uh you know this is easy to teach easy to play uh it doesn't stay too long yeah these monsters are relatively easy to to kind of defeat at the beginning and then towards the end it does get a little bit more challenging which is kind of what you want in a game like this you want it to ramp up just a little bit but it doesn't overstay it's welcome and so there you have it that is bargain quest plus the new suncoast expansion designed by jonathan ying well thank you guys so much for watching the video we hope you enjoyed it this was day seven so one full week of our 12 days of board games is complete join us
