Chess Rivals Playthrough - Build Your Deck, Outplay Your Opponent, Move Up The Rankings!
Transcript
Hey, I'm Alex Rack from Board Gameco.
I'm Professor Mag.
And today we are playing through Chess Rivals. Chess Rivals, despite what the name might make you think it is, is not a chess game. It is a chess themed game in which we are going to be playing through a deck building game where we alternate between taking battles against each other, going chess matches against the players before going into a worker placement round over here. Before we get too far into this, this is a prototype. All rules and components have to change, and we'll have a link to the crowdfunding campaign down below. And this is a sponsored gameplay. We'll be walking through a uh three-player game, showcasing what one of the two modes is. There's a few modes to this game. Uh well, I say a few. I think there's two. I think there's two modes to this game. We're going to be playing through the more straightforward mode before there's a whole tournament extra level to it. Uh in which we're going to be playing through up to nine rounds in an attempt to destroy each other. Basically win. We're trying to win the game. I'll give you a very general overview and then we'll dive into it. Uh this game can be a little hard to follow, but it is very uh straightforward once you get into it.
The basic idea is there's potentially nine rounds to the game. If we get that far, the game will end when one of two things happens. Either on this track over here, if a player has won their third match point, then the player will win the game. Alternatively, if they get their ELO and fame to the required markings over there, then the player wins the game. The third way is if we play out through the full nine rounds, then there's a basically a checking whoever has the most match points, then ELO, then fame to see who wins. I doubt we'll get that far. It's probably going to be one of the other game triggers, but we shall see. A round of the game is going to be a chess match between two of the three of us in which we're going to be going against each other with the third player being a spectator being able to bet on the match before going into the next round which is a worker placement area which we're going to go ahead and place our pieces on this zone in order to go ahead and build our deck, get money, get books, get knowledge, get all those things, trading them in for other uh benefits. That's a highle overview of what's happening here. We'll kind of walk you through slowly the first few turns as we go through it because it will be a lot easier to see things in action as opposed to trying to explain them. Uh, and with that, the first two players going headtohead are myself and AP.
All right,
the first thing we're going to do is we're going to go ahead and draw our four cards. And then we're going to be going through a sequence. I'll be using this board over here. Uh, AP is going to be using this board. And we're going to be doing is playing our cards above the boards, the various slots over here, uh, in order to kind of affect this board, which will affect how players win. There's a lots of lots of complicated areas going on here. You'll see it as we all play out. The first thing we have to be mindful of is different cards can be played to different areas depending on one, two, three, or f four or five which turn it is of the match. So in my hand, without getting too much into it, some of my cards I can't even play it. Other cards I can though. So we will go ahead and uh I think you know what? We're going to go ahead and do that. We're going to go ahead and do this. All right. So
and Alex, should I draw cards as well?
Yes, technically technically you should draw cards because you might be able to prepare which again we'll get into. Mega as a spectator has a different way she works, but we're going to go ahead and we're going to reveal our cards.
So, right now, based on the top left corner of the cards, I played a pawn to your knight. So, we're going to move you two towards me on this track, but I'm going to moving back one over here and then one over here, meaning we haven't affected those two values. That's going to be the uh movement of the top left corner based on the icons. Additionally, because we both play two total, you basically do the math over here. one and negative one is zero, which is where the overall chess ranking is. Ultimately, at the end of five cards, if this has moved towards one player or the other, that will affect who wins if it's outside of this range. That's going to be that. Then we do abilities. You're going to be drawing two cards from your deck to your hand. And I'm going to be doing an exchange where I'm going to exchange my uh pawn for your pawn. Uh you know what? I'm trying to think. I'm actually Yeah, I'm going to change my pawn for your pawn.
Pawn pawn for a pawn. Taking out
me. You're trying to cause a draw. Who's to say what I'm trying to do? Basically, that ability is uh we can exchange pieces. I choose which piece to kind of trade off on the board. We're then going to draw up and we're going to play a second play. On our third turn, Mag will have an opportunity to get involved.
Mhm. Mhm.
You never know.
You never know. You just never know. Sometimes you know.
Sometimes you do know.
You probably know.
I do know. I have chosen. I have chosen.
We're going to go ahead and play our second card. We're going to reveal them.
And we have double queen movement, the queen will not move at all. This ability over here, if it hits one side of the board or the other at range two, then effectively at the end of the match is going to push the center draw three in towards the direction. So, it is very helpful for an endgame play if you can move that. Uh, and both of us played our exact same cards. So, we can go ahead and uh choose this. And this is if there's a tie, you just do it in turn order. So, I believe I'm going first. I'm going to choose a defensive posture over here. So, well, we'll get more into that, but if we do back draw, that's defensive. That's defensive. Yep. This is offensive. That's defensive. And you can choose where you want to put your slider.
This is defensive. I think I will do offensive just to be different.
Uh, not just to be different. He wants to be offensive.
Um, offensive me. And do we draw?
Yes. Uh, we draw back up. That will only come into play if there's bag draw abilities, which
How many cards were they supposed to draw last round? You should have four cards in your hand, but then two. So, you should have six cards in your hand.
Oh, so I didn't have enough cards last round.
Yeah.
And am I supposed to be betting now?
Uh, yes. Oh, yes. Meg now gets to join the picture to bet. Basically, she can go ahead and on this board over here, she can position uh well, technically do this. The way we have it set up is between two boards. Technically, she'd have her own board, but you can position where you think, do you think white's going to win? Do you think black's going to win? Or do you think it'll be a draw? And you can uh do that while we choose our cards.
And who is which?
Uh, white's going to be this side. For simplicity, do white and black. Yes.
Yeah.
Oh,
cuz there's no actual turn order in this game. It's just to find who you think's going to win or a draw. Or it could be a draw.
It could be a draw.
It could be a draw.
This could be a draw.
It could be a draw.
But would it be a draw,
but would it be a draw?
I want to be right.
We all want to be right. Brian,
I'm going to say honestly I feel inclined toward a draw.
Go for it.
But
play out. Who's to say what's going to happen? And we are waiting on you. No rush.
Oh, are you? Yes. Not I thought you you both seem
We both I'm still evaluating
appreciating already know what I'm doing. But it's
I thought you were like, "Oh my gosh, thank god she's talking."
Uh um actually I don't know if I should
Well, I'm ready. I've chosen I chose white. So, choose wisely.
I'm going to go ahead and uh play this. Okay.
Okay.
So, I played this over here, a queen,
and you played a bishop. So, you're going to push this two towards my side. I'm going to push this two towards your side. Uh the center is still not going to adjust because we have negative 1, negative 1, and two, which is zero. Um and then I'm going to shrink this. Okay. So, I'm adjusting the win loss. My ability over there is I'm basically going to uh shrink the the win loss percentage. And you're betting on me, Meg. That's so inspiring.
I did.
And then you get to do a bag draw.
A bag draw.
So, right now, he's going to draw a token from his bag. It could be negative. Oh, it could be positive, but it's going to be one less cuz I have a defensive play. Well, actually be the same.
Negative two.
I'm going to use my horse, I think.
Oh my gosh. Thank goodness.
You can go ahead and use your horse.
I'm going to use my horse to just have it be.
So, it becomes zero. Uh, and it's plus one minus one from these two. So, it just becomes zero. So, just leave it in play because it is a factor is a factor on on these.
Okay. That is that. So, nothing really lose.
No major shifts.
We continue to draw up
from the plus side. If you attack,
how many cards I have left now? Still six.
Uh, you still still have six. Yes.
And we're on to card four now.
Our last No,
card four.
You have five cards you can play.
Oh, yes. Card four.
I know I'm right about this.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You're right. You're right.
Did I do the right ability, though? I did. I I increased the winters. Good. Cool, cool, cool. Making sure. Making sure. Mhm.
I can't believe it's set up like stark on the middle like that.
Well, look. It's like getting skinny. So, it's getting more skinny.
It is. It is. It is.
Okay.
Oh my gosh. How do I handle this?
I will tell you how I handle this. We're going
I don't move this over a little bit.
I I will reluctantly do this. Okay.
And ready.
Okay. We got to move. We got to move. So, right now I'm pushing this two that away. You're pushing one as well as two, which means you are going to get an extra play. So, right now, uh, AP pushed this far enough that he's going to activate this ability. You're going to draw the top two cards of your deck, although doesn't look like you have enough to do so. And then you'll play the top. Basically, you're going to play the top card if it's legal.
So, you can look at it. And if it's legal, you get a free play.
What card number is this?
Five.
Five.
Slate. So, go ahead and play it. And you're only affecting the card values over there. So, you're going to push this one more. And this doesn't matter at all.
I bet
which means the total values. Well, we're not done. We're not done. Yeah, the total values are -3 to 1. That's going to be uh two in this direction, but minus two that became a zero, right? So, we should have flipped it over. But we'll put this on this to mark that. Okay, that's going to be that. But we're not done yet because I haven't done my ability. You are increasing the win loss percentage with this ability. So, you're going to increase the win loss. Uh so, it's going to go back to the original. So, now it's still a possible draw. And then on my end, I am drawing from the bag. So, we're going to have that effect happening.
Get uh -2. Yeah, I have a horse now.
So, you're still drawing from the bag.
I have a horse. Yeah. I'm going to draw from the bag over here. And we have
the suspense.
Negative one. And I will add my plus two to it to get a plus one. So, that's going to be plus one that away.
So, we're still in a draw percentage.
Draw percentage.
Interesting.
What's going to happen next?
And now we go ahead and Oh, me. Before we play our fifth card, guess who gets the bet?
Oh, I'm going to do a pawn action.
Oh, you are? Really? That's why you played your horse early. I didn't notice.
Yeah.
I'm going to do my king to take a fame because
going to move up the fame point. Okay. So, you have four fame. You start at three. You're going straight to four now. Okay. And I am looking at my hand to try to figure out what I want to do
cuz I don't know what makes sense to do.
Well, if you win,
we're trying to win. I want him to win, but only because I bet on it.
Okay, I I think I think I know what I'm doing. I'm ready.
Second.
Me, too.
Okay, we're going to go ahead and play our cards. I played a king. You played a queen. That's not good for me.
That's not good for me. So, I'm going to push this one in that direction. You're going to Oh, no. You did it.
And [clears throat] And the bottom thing shrinks.
Well, I expand it and you shrink it so it stays the same.
Oh, nice. But it doesn't matter because you have the queen which is going to push it one two three in my direction. And so you win the match.
So the end result of winning the match is going to be tracked on this board over here. As the winner, AP is going to go up 50 on this track. So you're going to go up your blue, I believe. Yep.
You go up one notch on the the ELO track. You're going to go up one fame point because everyone thinks you're cool and awesome. Now I am cool and awesome.
Um then you're going to get five uh books over here. Five money, I mean. So five money goes to your supply. Uh, and then I am going to get five books, which is a better currency, but that's the trade-off for losing. More knowledge gained, and I lose 50 ELO. So, I'm going to go down 50 over here. AP is now 100 ELO points higher than me, which is going to make it harder for me to win. I also, unfortunately, lose a fame. So, right now, I'm not doing the best, guys.
I did the fame.
I'm not doing the best.
So, I lose this.
You don't lose it. You're going to get anything.
I don't Yeah.
Yeah. You got predict zero
and I lose the prediction.
All right.
Should have bet on the winner, right?
You always should have bet on the winner. That is that is very obvious. Uh which brings us to the worker placement phase. Starting with myself as player number one is going to go ahead and uh basically be putting out one of my markers. Where are my markers over here?
The horse. Yes.
Should I be drawn to four cards before?
No. No. We're going to In fact, the remaining cards in our hand should get discarded to whatever discard.
Do I get a match point?
Uh you gain a match point. You do indeed. So discard. So where do these go? These ones?
Those are going to go to your discard pile. You have your own personal discard area. Uh, your match point is going to go up one. If you get to three, you win. Um, and then I get to choose which spot I want to go on first. And given that I have so much knowledge, uh, and I also have money, maybe it's worth going on fame. I don't think so. I think I need better cards. I think I need better cards. I have the knowledge for it. You know what? I'm going to go ahead and I will go here with two knowledge. So, I'm going to take three change and I'm going to acquire two cards from the market. So, I'm going to look at the market of cards over here. Try to figure out what I think is better for me. Honestly, they're all terrible for me. I guess more bag draw is not a bad thing. Um, oh, you know what? You know what? No, I'm not going to do this. Where's my my thing? I take my books back. So, I'm going to take two books back and I'm going to do what AP wants to do on his first move, which is immediately get rid of my negative two from the baguh and replace it with a one.
I don't know what you're talking about.
Uh, I'm going to go ahead and get rid of my negative2. So, when you go to that spot, you take your worst token, which is a negative two, and you replace it with a one, making your chance of having something really, really bad happen not as likely.
Nice.
Uh, then, uh, oh, I have to pay I have to pay two books for that. So, I still pay
done. Just go back in my bag.
And then, AP, you are player two. You can go ahead and change that.
Changes the things I was going to do. I think I will use my horse to go to the one underneath you
over here.
Yeah.
So, you're going to per burn a bunch of cards. So, you're going to draw up to five from your deck. Um, and then shuffle if need be,
right? Because did we draw more cards in the beginning of my game?
At the beginning of a of a match, you wouldn't have it now.
So, I only have four cards available.
So, shuffle and draw.
So, here's my question.
Where were those card where were those cards?
These are what I had in my hand during
They get discarded.
They're all discarded. So, before my next round, do I draw more cards?
Well, right now you're going to do it because of that. So, you're going to shuffle up and draw.
To clarify,
at the beginning of the next match, you will draw a hand of four cards.
So, I don't have to have more cards. Really? I have enough here with this deck.
Yeah.
No, this action is you draw five cards. But he's saying he's not going.
I misunderstood it. I thought I only had four cards for next round.
Oh, okay.
So, I think what's the top left corner? How much does that cost?
Top left corner. That's going to be two and two. And you bump up your ELO ranking.
Two and
two and six. Two and six.
Two and two money.
Two money [clears throat] and uh six uh sorry, two books and six money.
I think I should do that.
Go for it.
Yeah, I think we'll do that.
Okay. It means you will start uh against Meg at an advantage. Actually, depends on how who wins. But yeah,
the alternative is I get new cards, new things. Uh, we're going to go for it.
Okay.
So, I take this is six, so I take back four.
Yep.
And one, two, three, four. And I This costs two, so I take back three. Correct.
One, two, three. Okay. And then you bump up 100 on the elo track. So, you're well positioned over here. You're going to go straight to 2650. You're like, as awesome. Basically, you took place in an international tournament. He did great. It's amazing. And now it's Meg's turn to place on the worker placement board. Okay, I knew what I wanted and then I wasn't sure. I think I'm going to do Yeah, I will do who has placed who is blue.
Uh, AP's blue.
Okay, I'm going to do this one. I will take that.
So, you're going to draw five cards. You're going to burn three and then draw three new ones from these from these decks. And they are immediately replaced. So as you draw them, new cards will come out to replace them. There's always two from each level from early game, mid game, and late game for you to pick from.
Okay. The only thing I know,
yes,
is that those first four cards were all starting.
So was this a bad call? May, maybe not. So I draw the five.
Yep.
And then I exchange three.
You exchange three. You got you burned three cards.
This was uh one, two, I can get rid of my queen, right?
Go for it.
Is that crazy?
Go for it. And then you're going to take three new cards to the market.
Okay, I'll do this. Okay,
this feels I
put them off to the side somewhere and then draw three new cards to market.
All right, I'll do one.
A new card comes out right away. She immediately take it over. two.
Nice variety. Okay, we have some checkmate cards come in play if uh things will head that direction.
And so, should I hold on to these in my hand or should I
You uh dig a shuffled into your deck.
Okay. Oh, right.
Okay. Uh, then it's back to my turn. What do I do? I could just buy fame, which is not bad considering I'm not currently winning, but also buying ELO is not bad either. There's honestly a lot of things I could do, but I think improving my deck is is key. So, I think I think I'm going to go ahead with a I'll go ahead and do some deck building. So, I'm going to go here with my horse. I'm going to pay four books. That's going to give me uh the three cards basically added to my deck. I'm going to add X-ray over here and see what comes out. We have an exchange program over there, which is not the worst. Exchange isn't bad.
I do like exchange. It takes out the opponent's piece, but I also like card draw. I like abilities. In fact, if I'm building a better bag, maybe I should just focus on hippo defense over here. Then see what comes out next. And we have Okay, that's three symbols, which is definitely not bad to get that extra level of push uh transposition. You know what? I think I'm actually just going to go with defense. I think I'm going to focus on the uh the bag draw. Okay, that's my turn to UAP. My turn. And this one over here says what? Uh, you pay two books to gain one fame.
Um, I will right now.
Oh, yeah. You only have
And I And I can otherwise pay two of these and get how many cards?
Two cards.
I'm going to do that. Pay two of these. I'm going to take the top the bottom left one over there.
Transposition.
Yeah.
Okay.
See what comes out. And I will card draw.
Oh no, my queen. And I think I will take the top right card. That's the checkmate run, right?
Yep.
Yeah. All right. Mag to you. You got smothered mate.
Oh man. Okay. And what does this do?
So this goes here.
That's going to let you uh draw five and then burn two cards.
Draw five and then just burn two.
Burn two. You might run out of cards if you're not careful.
No. Yeah. I thought I thought it was gaining cards.
I shuffle those ones in.
Yeah. Okay.
Okay. I will. I guess I'll do this cuz I don't know what else I can do.
Okay. You're going to pay two books and you go up one fame. You're famous.
Yeah. We shall see.
All right. You are the most famous officially.
Yep.
Uh we'll see if it helps. And now we go into round two. Round two, we're going to reset all the markers. We're going to reset these to the neutral position over here. Uh and then it's going to be Meg against myself in round two. So everything just resets and we do the exact same thing. We just don't we don't uh Yes, you can swap your slider in four cards.
Uh you should have four cards. Yes,
we need our pawns and our horses back.
Yep. Horses back. Horses back. And you'll take this side. This time you'll be white. I will be black. And I pee you'll be the spectator. So you're also going to draw
how many?
Uh four cards.
Four cards.
Yep. You're going to pick your cards and uh do the things. It is slightly weird being in the middle because I'm constantly going to be shifting which side I'm playing on.
Okay,
I am ready.
Ready. Flip your cards. I move one in this direction. You move one back and one back. Uh but you'll be doing drawing two cards and I will be drawing for the bag. So, I'm going to go ahead and draw from the bag over here. And I will draw a zero, which uh is just a zero, I believe. Yep, just a zero. Nothing else happens. Um I could bump it up. You know what? Let's go ahead and bump it up with a Let's bump this up. We're going to Hey, you know what? We're going to put a one. Bump with a one. Okay. So, I'm going to discard this to bump that by one.
Okay. And we go to our next card. Draw back up. Okay, I'm ready.
I'm ready as well.
I play double green to your double green plus blue.
So then you're going to be able to exchange a piece with mine. So you can do
I'll do my little guy for your big guy.
That seems like a reasonable exchange. I'm going to set two offensive mode. Okay. And then we go to the next round.
I will bet after this.
Uh you'll be betting before this. Yeah. You can you can think now about what you want to bet.
Um I will put one on white.
You could do draw.
I'm putting one on white. The confidence is astounding. Honestly,
I made a small tactical error. Tactical error.
I love hearing that after I bet on white.
Mhm. Are you thinking Alex is white?
No, you're white.
Okay. Okay. Okay. I was just making sure.
Okay.
Okay. I have played. Let me just make sure I can.
I think I have thought.
I have thought.
I am thinking. Okay. I think I'm ready.
Okay. We're going to reveal.
And you've played two towards me, but I played two. So, two green goes one, two, but then it also goes one back because of mine. And red goes one back because of mine. And that's going to put us to Well, I think it's I think there's something wrong. Oh, no, cuz I have this here. Yeah, that shouldn't be where it is. Okay. Um, that's currently there.
It won't matter because I forced a draw and you don't have a pawn left to rent it.
So, I forced a draw state.
Okay.
That way, you at least get nothing. Um, and we all get
I just said you could do a draw.
Um, so, uh, as in a draw, both Meg and I will both get two of each of the currencies. So, two to you and two to you and then two to me
and two to me.
Okay.
Okay. I wasn't confident of how things were going there and AP at least walks away with nothing.
Okay.
Okay. That's my main goal here. No.
Uh and then that's basically So, what happened happened is I forced a draw with this ability. You can sacrifice a pawn to negate a draw. Uh the same way you can sacrifice a horse to negate a checkmate, but you have to have those pieces in play. Uh the draw has to this token has to be the token has to be beneath the draw in order for that to be viable. Otherwise, you can't force the draw. All
right, that is the round, which means we go to round well, we go to the worker placement area now, but the worker placement of round two where AP um you are now the start player, I believe.
Okay. What do I do with the four cards in my hand?
Uh they just got discarded.
Okay.
And now I get to decide. I have one book and then the bottom left gives me books and cards.
Books and cards.
I need to get more books and cards. Books and cards. Books and cards.
Books and cards will come from here and here primarily but usually trading for each other. Or you can just get straight books or straight straight uh you have books and cards. Oh, books and cards are here. Money is there.
What's this one over here say?
Which one? Top middle.
Yeah, top. Top right. Top right. Top right is trading books for cards. Books and cards. You don't have enough books.
You don't have enough books.
You can get books from the bottom there. Is that
cards?
You're broke. You're too famous. You've been doing all been traveling around all about.
So, I think I will start off with um I will get books and money. What's that one over there?
I don't know what you're looking at.
Yeah, we'll do we'll do this. Trying to think. I'll take books and cards.
Books and cards. and books and cars. Where are you going? I don't know. You
Oh, actually, what's that? What's the bottom one over there? Bottom left. No, no, top corner. Yeah.
Spend two to get to improve your
spend. These are all spending.
Spending. You don't have
How do you How do you get more books?
Uh down here.
That's the only one.
That's the only one.
Okay, we'll take that.
Or or you can go here to spend four money and get more books.
Four money.
You get four money for five books or straight up three books.
I will take more money.
Okay. More books or more money?
More. Spending four money.
Okay. So, you're going here. spend all your all your money and then you get five books
and five books.
On my turn, I'm going to take my pawn and I'm going to go to the cycling zone, paying two books to improve my bag. I'm taking an early game loss on training is what I'm doing.
What is the order that we purchase in
uh in
I was like this is the same as last time where I'm less.
Nope. Nope. That was a great question. That was a great question. I'll take my books back.
I'll take my books back.
It's uh ironically not. I mean, now I want to do it.
Yeah, listen. You do you.
That was the point.
It is. It's for for the negative two. It's much more valuable than it is for the negative one.
Yeah, I'll do it.
GOD, STOP GOING.
IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT.
And you shouldn't have. I shouldn't have. I should have. You literally showed your move your chest move there, man. I was like, what was I
need something for in
uh you need to get rid of your lowest and then you get a one to replace your negative two.
Man, if only I could go there a second time that
No, I will not do that.
I will not do that. But I will evaluate whether I want things from the market
cuz I kind of do. I think I think I do.
I think I am going to take a low cost market area. So I'm going to go here with two and I'm going to go here and I'm going to spend two books which I just spent. I'm going to take this card on the market which get shuffled in shortly and I'm going to see what comes out. We have a checkmate option which is not the worst. But honestly, I think that right now I think I'm leaning towards What am I leaning towards? Supposed to try to win.
I I do know that. I think I'll go ahead and uh take this one. Okay. And then it is your turn AP. I'm gonna do the center middle. So I spend two books. So I'll take back three. And I go up one on
top or top or
bottom.
Okay. So this one. No. So you're spending two books to get a faint point.
Yep.
Okay. So AP is going to jump up a fing point. I see what you're doing there. I don't I can stop you, but I see what you're doing there. And guess whose turn it is now after you went?
Me.
It is indeed
me. I'm going to do the that one
over here. Paying for you.
The two and the six. Okay. So, you're going to jump up. Man, this ELO thing is not working out well for me. So, you're going to go up your yellow. So, you're going up 100. So, you're going to be already there. Oh, wow. You guys are closer than I'd like. I'm playing the long game.
Um, I
can tell by the draw.
Okay, then I will I have books.
I have nine rounds.
Um, I'm debating. I think I actually will once again I have the books. I'm gonna do deck building. I'm deck build. I'm gonna deck build.
All right. I'm gonna spend four books and I'm going to deck build more which feels crazy. Uh but I'm going to take this deck build as actually no. I'm not going to I am I'm going to take back four.
Yeah, I'm going to cycle.
Way to go.
I'm going to cycle instead. So, same idea, but I'm going to cycle into hopefully better cards.
Uh we're going to uh get rid draw hands. One, two, three, four, five. And then I'll look at these cards and see what I want to cycle. Um, I will
look at these cards.
Look at these cards. Aren't they neat? Wouldn't you think my collection's complete? I get rid of that one. Yeah, I think I will. I think I will. I'm going to get rid of these three cards. They can go off to the side over there. And I'm going to take three new cards. And I'll start with battery. Battery. Battery. See what's next.
And then we have two more. No, it's not a song.
I was actually singing.
Okay.
I'll take Legal's mate.
Legal battery.
And then I will take as an exchange. I think I'll take smothered mate.
Smother.
Yep.
Okay, that's my move. And that is I believe the round.
And who am I playing against now?
You're playing against Meg. I am now a spectator. It's you versus me.
And uh both draw four cards. I'll draw my four as well. And you can take a turn.
I only have one right here.
Let's do one of these.
Okay.
Indeed.
Yes. Very nice. Very very I do like these guys.
Once we go into the fourth round, we'll be repeating that cycle of me versus AP, me versus me, AP versus me. And round and round we go until someone either hits three match points one or alternatively until someone has crossed the ELO and FA rankings of which I am the closest to doing so.
Round and round we go.
Yeah, we are on round three over here.
We stop. No one knows.
As if the road had done no.
What a deep cut for those watching.
Okay, I'm ready.
Yes.
Card prepared. Card locked and loaded. Right. I got distracted by that song. He threw me off for a second. Likewise. Locked and loaded.
Okay.
Sicilian.
We're going to move this over here is going to move along to that direction. Wow.
Um and then Meg, you're going to push this one towards AP and one towards AP, which means AP you are going to draw. You're going to draw two cards top of your deck and play one if legal in the first spot. So, one of them has to be a legal play in the first spot or it's a wasted unfortunately.
What do you have? Neither are available in the first part.
So you both So still still a draw two. It's not a bad thing.
They go in my hand.
But then you resolve Yep. You both draw two.
And then I do I draw another two.
Yes, you do.
So I have a lot of cards in my hand.
You have a lot of cards. Lots of options. Lots of plus.
Should I draw one more for beginning the next?
Yes. Yes. Wait. So then I draw one more for the next round.
Yeah.
Yep.
And now you go to the next round. Play your cards.
Play your cards, fool. Uh what? But what to play? What the
Of course it is.
I'm so conflicted.
So long,
but I've chosen.
Likewise.
But I am conflicted still.
Go ahead.
Flip things. We have two red movement towards Meg over here. So, it's going to go shift towards red.
Uh, then we have two green towards AP as well as a blue towards AP. Checkmate has been enabled. To be clear, that's not checkmate yet. Meg needs to play a checkmate ability. But first, you do actual abilities. So, first things first, you go ahead.
We didn't clear that board.
Which board? Oh, yes. Of our token.
Absolutely. I took the extreme. So, right now, we're going to take
exchange. So you can exchange your own uh and uh right now me you can do an exchange and AP you can set your dial.
Okay. I'm going to use my low for your big.
Okay. I'm going to do this.
A perfect move if I say so myself. Then I get to go ahead and bet on the outcome of where I think this is going.
And I need to draw. So, that's everything for now.
Yes. I'm going to bet Oh,
should this go one over?
Uh, yes. It should go one over. Good catch. Good catch. Speaking of which, I'm betting on Meg to win. No reason at all. I'm going to bet a little weird.
What's in what sense?
Because I have the two blues. So, shouldn't blue be going my way?
No, you push towards your opponent.
Okay,
that's why.
Then never mind. I have bet. I bet on me in case it wasn't clear. Don't like read into the fact that she's entering checkmate or she has a pushed more towards his side. It could be a draw.
Could be.
I'm ready.
Yeah. Okay. Play your cards.
Oh, I'm supposed to draw one more if you're supposed to. Yeah, man. I
One second. One second. One second. One second.
Fine. I'll keep it. It's okay. It's okay.
Oh, okay. It's fine.
This is what it was. So, uh, we're going to push red two more towards Meg over here.
Oh my gosh.
And then we're going to push green two more towards AP, which means Meg, now you're going to draw two cards. And if one is legal for the middle spot, you'll play it.
It is.
Then you play it and you just get the symbols on it, nothing else. So you get blue. Okay. So that's going to push one more towards blue. Um, and that means the total value right now is 3 + 2 - 3 going to be two. So we're now out of draw range. Uh, AP is going to decrease the win lose percentage, making it a more likely to enter draw. And me, you're going to draw cards.
Yeah. So, when I do the green ability, I would discard the other card.
Uh, no. No, it goes to your hand.
The second card. Yep.
Okay. Well, either way, then I have
But I draw another card now.
Yes. Yeah. If you have all your cards, you don't draw, especially if you weeded your deck too much, that can happen.
All right. So, now we're going into round four.
We're going into the fourth play.
What did you vote?
I voted uh that Net Meg's going to win. And then he expanded the draw window. The eval bridge.
Oh, I see.
But also, if it does hit the end, if a draw is not triggered right now, currently it's going to shift to be towards me, actually, which is not good for me. Probably shouldn't have bet on that. Meg, push the queen. Push the queen. I'm between one of two things.
Cheezits or macaroni?
And cheese.
How about macaroni and cheese?
You actually probably could do that. That sounds delightful. If you've tried macaroni and cheese, let's let us know. And if you haven't, and you're going to because of this video, let us know that even more.
Okay, we're doing this. Okay,
we're doing this. We're doing this. Cars down. Play your matches. Flip them. And we have two away over here. One, two. And then we have two. And did you just force a draw, Meg?
She just forced a draw.
I totally
Okay.
I learned from the best.
A draw has been forced.
I don't know. It was the only red card I had.
Do I draw this first?
No. No. There's an order to the the to the abilities and the the draw state is checked first.
Wow.
Yeah, that's rough, man.
It's the only red card I have. Anyways, a draw has been forced, which means I get nothing uh betting wise. Man, it's rude when someone tries to win and you cut them out early.
Yeah.
And then you each get two money and two books. And Meg, you are taking the first worker placement spot over here.
Oh my gosh.
And these my entire hand and everything goes right over here. And this last card goes where?
Uh the last cards your deck right now until you need to shuffle.
Okay. So I have take how many? Three and three.
Uh two and two. Two and the two and two.
Two and two.
Good to know. Okay, here you go, Meg. And you go first.
I just Where did you take phone?
Someone hand
I just handed you.
Oh, you handed me two and two. Okay,
I had that. All right,
funsies.
Okay,
I am going to go crazy.
Don't go crazy.
I I I'm going to go here. No. Meg jumps up three fame. She's yellow, which brings her to nine. Oh my gosh. Are you one away from winning?
Maybe.
Oh my gosh.
Here's my money.
She's not going to win just yet.
She's not going to
just Well, because but the fun part is I can force the game state even if you didn't want to do that. I'm going to go.
She still has the currency to do it even.
That was literally every money I had.
Well, I am going to go over here and build my bag. I'm playing the long game, guys. I'm playing the long game. I'm going to remove a negative one. bag builder
and I go to a one. So, there's more and more chances of me having positive results in my bag. And your turn AP.
Um, I'm going to win every match I play from here on out.
Every match
I've trained.
The problem is who? Wait, I start next match.
You are not. Yeah, you and me going to round four after this. So, it's you versus me.
And who would get to bid first next round?
Bid first on what?
On that board. Going into next round, I will I will get first selection.
Got it. I think I'm supposed to do it either way.
I'm going to take this for two. I'll go one up.
So, you're going to go one of the fame. Uh you're blue. So, you go up from six to seven. Uh and then to you, Meg.
I am just going to do this one. So, I have everything's in my discard.
Okay. So, you're burning cards. You have enough.
Oh, no. Sorry. Then I messed up. What is it? What is that one? Let's draw two in the round.
Draw five. Draw five and burn two.
Oh, I don't think I want to do that.
That makes more sense to me.
I got mixed up again. Um, so what could I do? I could basically gain five money or three books.
Well, get your hands on some books for next round.
Or five money, but that's books are better.
I think books are better.
Okay.
Because the the upside of books is next round if you win, you'll get money and not books. And so getting their hands on books is what will enable you to have access to that if you need to.
Okay,
that's her. Valid.
Valid. So valid. I'm just looking at what we got here. I think I need
The only thing on her favor is next round that goes third,
right?
So, we can guarantee to lock her out of fame. But if she wins,
if she wins her next round, Oh, no. But she's not playing next round,
right?
But even as a spectator, you can get fame.
If she get if she predicts three,
exactly correct,
then we have to like we have to like incentivize a draw to cut her out again.
Yeah. Uh which is a long game. Um I think I have my horse left and I can do all four. You don't do early game. You know if you're winning and then you throw the game as soon as I make a prediction. Throw the game for you guys. Just agree to draw. Just agree to draw.
This is a chess match. I'm like texting under the table being like, "We got to cut her out."
You're not allowed to do that.
I know. That's one thing.
There's a whole scandal this time. You can't do that.
I have to rule because I can't afford anything else. I What's the horse over there? How much it cost? Three.
Uh this one over here.
Yeah.
That doesn't cost anything.
What do you mean? This one? Yeah,
this is you draw five cards in cycle three.
I should do that.
Do it.
I need to do that to some extent. I'll try. I know. But let's see. Um if I do that, I can do that next round. And I can do that next round.
Even if it's a draw.
I'm not in the next one.
I I think I I have to do that. We're doing that.
So I draw from this last card.
Yep. And then draw four more. Shuffle up and draw. In the meantime, while you do that, I'm going to go
Should I go next?
I believe No, I will go next. Sorry.
Actually, is that true?
No, I've gone twice already.
Yeah, that makes sense.
I started this time.
Ah,
I started this time.
Here's what happened. AP should have gone. I should have gone. Oh, I'm sorry. No, it's okay. I don't want you. I don't want.
So, it works for me. Um, cuz wrong. So, I'm going to go here. I'm going to pay two books and six money.
Mhm.
Now, I'm going to jump up 100 elo.
If you can't win, pay for it.
Uh, so I went from I started 2500, I went down 2450, right? So, I'm at 2550 over here.
You get in college. Okay. See if you can't wait. Pay for it. Like I said,
um
Okay.
I still need to draw.
You need Yeah, you need to resolve yours while you do that.
I have this one plus four more.
I'm going to clear the board.
Three.
Should this start popping?
Four.
Uh it's going to start smaller and it's going to start in AP's favor because he's 100 elo high.
And I will give in three cards first or I do one for one.
That makes it a little easier to predict.
It does. Uh, second.
How does this work again when it comes to
you're going to you're going to cycle three cards, get burn three cards, and then draw three more for the market.
Okay. Um, and I have to do three
and then we're going to draw four, right?
Yes.
So, I will do one. I'm burning these two. One, two. And I need to burn a third one. I like this card, though. But
you got That's the This is That's the choice you made.
The choice you made. I'm worried me's going to win this round.
We are in round four.
I just got to be smart.
I got to be smart,
which is what chess is all about, honestly.
Okay, I will
I will do this.
Don't talk to me.
Uh yeah. So, my plan will do this. My plan is
I'm burning these three.
Not lose horribly this round, but maybe the round after.
Okay.
I will take the middle top one.
Okay.
Middle top. And is there anything that does a draw? Just I'm just curious.
Draw. Uh none of them none of them draw right now.
Well, this is draw two.
No, he means draw the match.
I will take the top middle one again.
And Aaron Burr.
Okay. Sarah and then
if it were
I will take the top middle one again.
Legals mate. Okay.
Yeah. And is this my starting hand?
Uh that's not in there. You're going to shuffle everything into your deck.
Oh.
And then uh you'll shuffle everything into your deck and then draw from your deck, which I have done.
I am now ready, sir.
I am not ready.
We're in round four. And we ready to go. And I am ready to play my cards. I've played. I've locked in. I'm locked and loaded. I'm ready to go.
I still need to draw. So I draw four cards. And you see my hand is in order to do this.
It takes more. There's a chess clock on this game.
Yeah.
Can't play now.
Yeah.
I just had to.
Okay. Draw four.
Yes.
Two. Three. Four. These are out over here. Let's see what we're doing here.
I can predict with either one of these the first time. It's just that I choose.
Yeah.
Okay. Then we go ahead and reveal.
Reveal you. And we got two towards me, which is bad for me. And then one towards you because I have two and then one. And that's going to shift this one. You're currently winning already. Uh you get to set your marker and I get to draw two cards. So this will give me a stronger offense. Defense.
Mhm.
It'll be better offense. I will do defense. Okay. I'm going to draw a card and then we're going to draw for the next round. So, I'm going to draw right next.
Okay. Are you ready for this moment for this game to come to pass?
This does not look like it's in the center or
it's this is not in the center because you had a 100 elo higher than me. So, this starts off more favorable position. I have to push harder to win against you.
Yikes.
You're a competent chess player. I've just been paying people.
Yikes. that he gets. It's gonna set a lot of chess fans.
Well, no one knows who you are. It's not your fault.
Wow.
I meant that.
Your name is low.
Let me reveal.
Okay. And you went ahead and you pushed this one, two towards me. And then another one. And I went ahead and pushed it one. Uh, which means you're going to go one, two over there. Uh, but then abilities time. Uh, you can go ahead uh, and what's it called? I don't remember the exact order of the draw versus what's called. Uh, you can go ahead and exchange one of my pieces.
I'm going to take off your horse.
Okay.
With my pawn.
Makes sense. Um, and then I'm going to uh bag draw.
But I have to make sure Meg doesn't win the betting.
Uh, yeah, but we'll get that one step time. I'm going to draw from the bag. I'm going to draw three cuz I have so many awesome tokens over here. We got a three. Oh my gosh, I got a three.
Three.
Um, and that's going to be three to one. So, one, two, three over there.
Uh, and that's the round. That's the not the round. That's the the card play. We draw back up.
I draw one more
and then we continue.
Yeah.
Or harassment or harangment.
Uh, okay. Third. Wait, she bets on our third.
Yes, you bet. Me.
Me, what are you going to do?
What you going to do when they come to you?
I'm not sure exactly what happens,
but I'm going to pawn and gaining a victory point.
Gain a victory point. What does that mean? [gasps] Oh no,
I forgot about that. Wait, does she win?
I think it's her game.
I don't know what happens if it happens mid game.
What? But if I win game three evol at the end of the match if I if I do on I'm on the red all the way.
Wow, she won.
I know it won't make a difference. There's nothing.
The game's ending before the question is he's trying to see if he can tie. Can you tie? Because if you can tie I think it happens right away though.
Yeah, that's the thing is if it
me just got rid of her king. What me did is she discarded her king to get a fame point. It's a permanent burn.
Yeah,
we totally forgot she can do that.
Yeah,
like but it's not even her chess match.
Yeah,
she's like I walked in super late and I showed up and I win.
Who's the current chess guy? Magnus whatever. It has that vibe like
it's like, "Oh, you're waiting for me.
I paid to be here."
So, I did really well. Uh, as
you guys want to play out your match to see how the match is.
I want to win this match. I want to play.
Okay, we can play with the match. We can play out the match. Um, but let's see how this go.
I'm still going to bet on the round five, honestly.
Uh, give me a second now.
Gosh. That was
that was intense. Uh,
but now I need to think what I'm doing. I'm
ready.
[sighs]
I'm going to do this. Okay, flipping. I got two reds. So, one, four, two. Uh, you're going to move forward one, two, as well as one. So, you're going to get a card draw, which will help. Uh, this will shift one towards me.
And then I get to put this.
So, I draw two cards. Correct.
But not for that. Just two cards for now.
That was three cards. Top two. Top two. Top two. Ah, I can't do it. Then you resolve your beliefs. Draw another two cards.
Draw another two cards. Okay. Interesting. Okay. Are you ready for the next card? I will be ready for the next card. One moment. When momento we will do this. So, two, one, two, one over here. Uh, we both do a bag draw. Um, I have you have a defensive on my bag draw. So, I'm going to get plus one to your neutral and I'll draw a zero.
And I'm going to hopefully draw a good number one.
One
and a horse can't block that.
Correct.
Okay.
You guys, you could add plus two though.
I will add plus one to my draw. Actually, no. You know, I'm not cuz you might try to draw.
Can you plus two?
If you discard this, it adds plus two. Oh, we don't want to do a draw. I want to win this one now.
Yeah, I know.
So, I can't I can't do the plus I can't add to this.
You can do plus two or prevent.
So, you can add plus two. I'll do one. Yeah.
So, it's going to basically shift one more in my direction.
Okay.
Yeah. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. And are you okay?
And now I would bet
uh yes, you have to bet again.
Okay.
I don't think it makes a difference if you bet
uh AP that you're going to bet on black.
Okay. Yeah, I'm actually about to draw.
That seems like
Okay. Nope. Not okay. I've chosen.
I have chosen.
I will do this. Go. Okay. Flip. And we go ahead and um you get uh so you're going to push it one more. You push two queens over here. Um I'll push one over here. Uh then you get to set the slider. Go ahead. Set the slider.
It makes no difference at this point.
You want it prevented. Yeah.
Right. And then I'll draw from the bag. I don't think it will make a difference because unfortunately even with my plus one, two, I go back one, two over here. But then you get three from the queen. One, two, three. And you do unfortunately win because the queen resolves over there. Uh, which means you're going to get as the winner, you're going to get a fame point, which does nothing for you to defeat against uh, Meg, winning the match.
I can't believe she beat us that way.
I thought we had more time. I thought we had more time.
That is a game of chess rivals. This is a game which you're going to be going again. You're going through a sequence of matches. Uh, then worker placement. If you play the full mode, there's also a full like rural tour aspect exploration mode. There's more going on going on there. Uh, but that's it. That's been a gameplay of Chess Rivals. Until next time, I'm Alex Rack from Board Game Co.
I'm Professor M.
JB. Have a good one.
Bye.
