TDG: Star Trek: Captain's Chair - To Boldly Go unboxing with Ray
Transcript
Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the discriminating gamer. So why is the Kindle screen textured to look like paper? So you feel right at home. Today we're going to take a look at Star Trek Captain's Chair to Boldly Go. Now this is a standalone game um for Star uh Star Trek Captain's Chair, but it can also be mixed in with the regular um Captain's Chair if you want to. Right, your total choice. However, this one's going to introduce six new characters, including Kirk and Khan. All right, the two that we wished were in the original. All right, but this sounds really interesting, and I love Star Trek Captain's Chair, and I'm excited that this is a standalone game. But what all is inside this box? I'll tell you what. Let's go down to the table. Let's open this one up. Let's see what's on the inside.
All right, folks. Here we go. This is Star Trek Captain Share 2 Bully Go. Now, like I said, this is an allnew standalone game, but it's compatible with regular Star Trek uh Captain's Chair. You can integrate the two. Done by Whiz Kids. All right, so do it by itself, add them together, whatever you want to do. But it's a deck building game by David and Adam Turtzy. I hope I got that right. And Nigel Buckle. All right. Now, this is kind of a longer box, okay? Rather than being square. But if we look, we're 60 to 120 minutes, ages 14 and up, and you're looking at one to two players for this particular box right there. Okay, come on. [groaning] Oh, yeah. I'm so excited about this one. All right, but there you go. That's kind of what the back's going to look like. Give you kind of an idea. 248 standard cards in this game. 50 plus glory tokens. Yeah, there's a lot of cards in this game. But then again, it's a deck building game. If it wasn't a whole lot of cards, it probably wouldn't be a deck building game, right? So, see if we can get this thing open. Let's see what we're going to get. What are these captains going to look like? What's Khan gonna look like? Are we going to still hate him? We going to love him? What's going to be the case with there? Are we going to get Kirk? Oh, what are the other captains we're going to get in this one? Now, I'll admit, I knew this was an expansion. I did not realize this was a standalone game until we got it.
So, that I'm really excited about. I like having separate standalone type games. I love integrating them, but I like also having them standalone if you want them that way. Now, here we go. This is going to be the common card list is what you're going to get. So, as you can see, there's all the different cards names and their abilities. So, you can take a look at that. This is really, really cool little quick sheet that you can just kind of look at all those cards. Very nice. I love that. Absolutely love that. Now, I'm going to slide this off to the side. Let's take a look at this book. What do we got? [snorts] Okay, so we got three of our captains right there. All right. Um, if you played Star Trek Captain's Chair, uh, watch the tutorial video. There you go. I love tutorial videos. Like I said, 60 to 120 minutes, ages 14 and up, one to two players. And here is our component list. Here's your common cards. Now, here's your solo components.
And that's I have not yet played this game solo, and that's one of the things I've always wanted to do, but I haven't gotten a chance to do it. All right, that's your what your ship market strip. Okay, of course, all your different um common ship tokens and everything else. Now, got your central setup, everything there. Got your player setup. We'll even slide this one here for you. You can take a better look at that so you can kind of see how that is. All right. Now, if I remember right, the rule book was actually pretty good for Star Trek Captain Chair. I don't remember having any problems uh when Cody and I played that and learned how to play it. I thought everything was outlined really well. So, I imagine this rule book is going to be pretty close to the same. Okay. All right. Gaining new cards, locations. Man, I haven't played this game in a while. I really need to get this game back out. And I just can't wait to play this one. This is going to be fun to fun to play without mixing it with the core game just to kind of see how it is. Final scoring.
All right. Now, here's all the component anatomy. I like how they do it in the back of the book, not like mixed in between all the different pages and whatnot. You can just go to the back, you can get it. Cadet training mode, keywords in detail. Oh, yeah. This a great rule book, folks. I think this is a great rule book from what I'm seeing right now. All right. Oh, here here's your new crew decks. All right. Giorgio, who do we got? Soval, Kirk, Archer, um, Rubner. Oh, wow. from the is that the animated series of course conh and then rules for con here's rules for rebar got some of them have their own special rules that one two three four five six new characters and there you go back of the book overview got icon reference now this is a game that definitely does have icon overload in my book it's got a lot of stuff but it actually I don't think it's so that bad okay it's actually pretty decent now here's your training program rules for solo play interesting so I can probably actually just do this and leave it right here. So, we got our setup.
Oh, there you go. Kind of give you an sideways view of that. Okay. The value of cards flow with the game. So, can you have Kirk verse con in a solo game? Um, yeah, you know you better, right? Mark it in your neutral zone. All right. Attacking the bots. Looks like uh some examples here. Five-year mission is solo campaign. Very nice. Some different challenges. You got your campaign log. Take care of that. Back of the book. Here's your solar solo player aid. Very cool. All right, that looks good. Now, let's take a look at what else we're going to get inside this box. We're going to get a bunch of tokens. And they're kind of shrink wrapped together. Is this going to come off easy? Oh, there we go. Yeah.
I like it when they when they rip easy. You only need this cellophane stuff. Just enough just to hold everything to get it here. Not [clears throat] to hold it like indefinitely, right? Okay. So, let's take a look at our tokens. So, this is going to be sheet one of three. Okay. There's your front side of them, of course. And there's your back side. Looks like the front and the back. Perfectly identical. Now, let's take a look at all these. Got our little ships right there. Get a closer look at those ships. Ah, very nice. Okay, your times five on those. Same on both sides. Some of these are upside down. Some of these are all over the place. Got your Borg probe Harper or Harpy. Duh. Okay. Very nice. And then more of the ship tokens.
All right. And then the nice thing is is what they all are. Now, I'm going to go ahead and do this because well, some of them are upside down. Don't ask me why, but oh well. Probably because the token's upside down to because they put them multiple different directions. Duh. Yesesh. All right. Now, we're going to have our player boards. And those are also shrink wrapped. So, is this those going to corner going to pop for me on these as well? Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. There we go. We got it. Okay. Just slide them a couple times. Usually they will. Now, get those open up. And they're just kind of sitting here. So, let's take a look at one of these because I know they're going to have a little border that's going to come off. You also are going to have all these that are going to pop out as well. Okay, so looking at that. Very, very nice. But I think I believe you're supposed to keep those. All right, we're not going to pop any of them just in case. But there we go. We got Khan. Who else we gonna have? Um, okay. That's just a con board. What do we have here now? Okay. Oh, here we That's right. Okay, so for Kirk, let's take Kirk apart. All right, let's get rid of that. And then of course you're going to have these which are going to pop out as you'll be able to see. Okay.
And they actually pop out pretty decent. Not too bad at all. But all those are going to come out. And then of course you're going to have your little cube is going to kind of slide through here. So that way you know where everything is. Okay. Looks like they're going to have their little goal abilities on top. There's your back side or the other side. Depends on which one you play. Okay. Very nice. Now, we're not going to take every one of those apart, but we're going to look. Thing is is these are all wanting to come out. So, we have Archer. Okay. Front and back of him. We have Georgio. Those will never stay on. So, let's just get rid of those. Don't like him anyways. Okay. We're going to have Soval. All right. There's your backside there.
And then Rebner. You know, they just need to have one all the an just one expansion that was just all animated series. That would have been cool. Okay, just add in a bunch of animated stuff. But you know what? You really only need the captain, right? So, okay, let's put those off to the side and all that's just going to go away. Now, what else we going to get here? Let's see. We're going to get little score pad. All right. And there is a ton of pages and they're double-sided, which is nice. So, you have build up one of those. Okay. You've played the game a lot. Very good. Now, let's get rid. See what we have here. Slide these down. All right. Now, Giorgio got your win loss. Five-year mission upgrades. It's on the back side. Her traits.
Okay. Keep all these. Oh, yeah. Still Giorgio on that one right there. Okay. So, we got two. Two. They're probably gonna have two for every one of these. Yeah, we are. Got your win loss. There's the back side of Soval. I'll do it like this. And then we'll do that. There we go. That That works really good for me. There's Kirk. There's those two. And okay, now Archer. Get my finger out of the way. Wh I can't even hold on to everything. Okay, there's the two there. Get an idea of what this these look like. Now, I know there's been some stuff out in this game. A lot of you guys might have already seen this, so maybe you haven't seen this one. Okay, but I'm going to show everybody anyways. So, there you go. All right, so that's Rebner. Then we're going to have Come on. That I'm sorry, folks. That is an amazing amazing picture. I love love that picture. Wow.
Okay, there's the other other con card. Okay, let's flip this one over. Just like that. Oh, and there's the backside of con. Very cool. Oh my gosh. Look at that one more time. That man, that is amazing. I'm sorry. You They did an amazing job on that. Now, I'm going to put those down on the bottom because that's looks like perfect slot for them and right where they go. So, in here, what are we going to get? All right, we're going to get Mirro. All right, backside there. And there you go. The included Mirror card is a correction to the card for the original. Okay. So, if you have the original game, all right, replace your Mirro with this card right there. Okay. I'm actually going to take this and put it just like that. To me, that's how it should have been. So, that way you see it and you see it on the backside, you know, not take the card out before you see actually what it's there for. But there you go. That's the way I like it. So, let's put that there. And let's go and put this pad here. Now, we're going to get some acrylic cubes. I'm not going to take them out of the bag. We all know what acrylic cubes look like. We all know what an silica gel looks like.
Okay. Looks like we're going to get some more resources. All right, just our little our little bars that we have. Okay, that we need and also our little pink gems. Okay, so we shove all those in there. Put all those back in there. And we'll put our little resources in there. Now, here, this is where we're going to have our acrylic tokens. And we're going to have to probably peel off all of the outer layers of them, okay? Because they're always they always have that coating on them. So, they kind of look dull right now. All right. But once you get that outer coating on, they kind of really brighten up. Okay, it takes me forever to get those things off. So, I am not going to sit here and try to peel one of those off so you can get a closer look at it. Just know that this looks the same as the original. So amazing. All right. And you're going to get a ton of standies for all of those ship counters.
I'm thinking there's enough room in here that you can actually just leave them on, too. Okay. But because and with these type of standies, if you look inside there, got the little grooves on them. So once you put the card in, if you try to take it out or the token in, um, a lot of times it'll kind of try to rip that bottom. So I like I like to just leave them on if I can. Okay. But otherwise, I do like those standings because they they hold really good, so I don't ever have a problem with that. Now, we're just going to start here. We're just going to go through each one of these little sections. Let's take a look at all these cards. Let's see what we have. And we're just going to put them back in each one of their individual sections. Okay. So here's the backside of all of these so we get an idea. So, we got those green. Okay, we're going to have our captain's chair cards what it looks like and then couple con stuff. All right, so let's take a look at con. There we go. There's your front and back side of con. Yeah, I think he's pretty much beat up in that one. So nice. So nice. All right, city out. What is it? City Alpha 5.
Okay, and a devastated version of it. All right, and the rest of these cards. Okay, we're just going to have our captains. Okay, so we got Kirk. There we go. Archer, Giorgio, we got Saval, and of course, Rebner. All right, now let's take just take a look at the rest of the cards. And there's a lot of cards in here, folks. So, I am just going to kind of flip through these. I if I see duplicates back toback, I'm going to skip through them. Sometimes when they do these decks, you'll go through one set of cards and then all of a sudden you start seeing the duplicates. Sometimes I don't catch it for a while. Sometimes I do. If I end up showing you duplicate cards, sorry about that. All right. Now, let's get this one off. And what are we going to get here? So, we're going to get our substitute resource. All right. Common terms backside. This is going to be some icons.
All right. We got some start date cards. All right. All the different colors of start date cards, what they are, and then those. So, that way you have an idea of what we're looking at. All right. Just keep going through them. All right. So, two player. Okay. These I'm just going to kind of flip through. So you got your one, two, three, four, fives on these. Okay, so it's solo versus depends upon who you're going against. Looks like maybe all right when empty destroyed this card.
All right, few more of these. Oh yeah, I can't wait to try this game solo, man. Like I said, I I've been wanting to play this one so well for a long time. I just not have had the time. So, and alo the core game. Cody has the core game. I just haven't been able to get the core game from him to play it. Okay. So, we're going to have This is what we're going to have inside this deck of cards. All right. Got a location. Got your Earth status. All right. Whoops. Think I skipped a card right there. There we go. Okay. Oh, man. And I almost skipped the Enterprise. I want to do that. All right, let's just start flipping through these cards. Just take a look at them.
I'm going to take a look at this artwork. Now, what's interesting is the artwork is different depend it. It's I wonder if they have different styles for different types of cards, which is kind of unique. Okay, I don't mind that. But yeah, the artwork on this these characters just looks different than some of the others. At least the style of the artwork. I like all the different styles and I really don't mind it being mixed in. Some people really noise them. Some people don't care. I'm one of those guys that I just like looking at the artwork and I love looking at puppies. Love looking at puppies. All right. Okay. And there's your final card. All right. Captain Tarot. So, just going to put these back in here. We have two more to go through.
H. Now, all of these are probably going to be all of our common cards. So, I'm definitely expecting to see some duplicates. Hope. And we're probably already looking at some. I'm just going to kind of thumb through them all. There are so many of them. It's not going to take me too long to go through them. See, like these this artwork, this looks like a different style. This is definitely a different style. All of it looks good. The planets and stuff that those those look amazing. See, and even this this stuff like I I love dust. It's really cool. The thing with this game, man, when it's on the table and all these cards are scattered all over the place, just looks all the art all over the place just looks so good.
Did I miss one there? Nope. All right. And the quality of the cards actually feels really good, too. Just so you know, I do like the feel of this of the cards in this game. Now, if you were to sleeve them all, would they fit in this box? Uh, maybe not. I don't know. I do like to sleeve my deck building games, but I don't know if they would all fit if you had all these ones sleeved. All right, try to get my finger out of the way. I've probably been covering up a lot of stuff. I've I've been paying so much attention. Oh, look at that. Bunch of animated series stuff. Deck gets so thick. Hopefully haven't been covering up all the text and stuff so you can see it. I haven't I I sometimes when I do this folks, I just get looking at the artwork and I sometimes forget where my fingers go because I just love looking at the artwork on these. The cards, I'm going to take a look at those while I'm playing the game. When I'm thumbing through them now, it's almost all artwork for me just to get an idea. All right, so because this deck is I'm just going to cut this deck in half, make it a little easier on myself. I'll try to pay more attention to my finger that going forward.
So, I can't say that I've really seen any duplicate cards. Nothing just stands out to me. Could be wrong. H It's all good looking stuff there. And there there there is a lot of cards. There's a lot in this game. That's what's cool. I mean, for a standalone expansion, there's a lot more in this than I actually thought there was. Of course, it's also a bigger box, too. Now, the question is, can you fit this in with the core box? H, especially if you sleeve it. And then there's what? Another expansion for this as well. The what is it? The second contact. Okay. Can all that fit in the same box? H I don't know. All right.
Trade embargo. Okay. Just keep flipping through these. I like looking for all the animated series people. You know, I started watching the animated series and I I know I've fallen behind on it because I just don't really watch TV, but it's one I definitely want to get back to and start watching again. I always enjoyed it. I always thought it was kind of fun. So maybe that's what I'll I'll go do that again. I've been looking for something to kind of watch in the evenings just to kind of blank my brain before I I go to sleep. I always have to clear my mind. If I don't clear my mind, I have a problem sleeping. Okay, now that's it. So like I said, if you sleep it, can you put them all in here? That would be it would be pretty tight. You'd probably be using some of this section as well. or you taking all this out and you're using your own custom insert. But there you go. Now, these are going to go right here. I think all the standies, all the tokens, everything I think are going to fit right here once everything's done. It's going to be a little bit of lid lift just because of uh these boards, but those boards are going to eventually be gone. Okay. All my raper uh pack wrappers and packaging, everything goes away. Let's take this lid. Let's get it down on there. Okay. Okay. And like I said, there's just a hair lid lift, but that's only because we got those token pieces on there. But there you go, folks. Wow. There is a lot in here for like a solo or two-player game. Tons of stuff. Whiz Kids. Oh, yeah. It's looking
good. Okay, let's head up. Let's close this out. All right, folks. There you go. That is Star Trek Captain Share 2 Boldly Go from Whiz Kids. I love the fact that this is a standalone game. So, you now have the core game if you want it or if you don't even own that and you just want something different. Say you just really want the characters in this one. Just go buy this one and play this one. Okay, totally your choice. Combine the two. Do whatever you want to do. I love the fact that it's an expansion or a standalone game. Okay, the game looks fantastic. All right, looks like it's the same artwork style. Everything's going to look the same. It's going to mix in really, really good. And it just looks good. Can't wait to get this one back to the table and give this one a play. Well, thank you once again for joining us today.
