Tonight on game night, Nikki, Kristoff, Lincoln, and me, Amanda, are going to teach and play Dino Racer from Marceline Lyman, an underdog games for two to six players. Let's see if the under dino is going to win.
Hey, Amanda.
Yes, Lincoln.
Will you teach us dino racer?
Happy to do so.
Nice.
It is the big race day. Our dinos are lined up at the starting line. And so what's going to happen is we are going to have one person being the announcer. They're going to draw the number of cards equal to the number of players plus one. As they draw them, the dinos are going to start moving.
That's what they'll be placing those five down.
No. So we're going to draw and then they're going to move the number of times that they are drawn.
Then what's going to happen is we're going to draft
these cards. So, I'm going to randomly draw one and show you that they like if I pulled this this T-Rex this uh tie top is going to move forward one and then at the end of that portion when I draw the five cards, we're going to draft it starting with the announcer. So, if I draft this, I think that the tritop is going to be in first place.
And I would get seven points.
Oh,
if the ttop came in second place, I would get five. and third one and non I would get no points.
I'm kind of betting on Okay,
if I have two copies, then I would get 14 points if I see it comes in first place.
Okay,
the last one that's not drafted, he will move again.
Ooh,
yes.
Okay,
so this game comes over three races and each race has a different number of checkpoint cards that we put out. When all of the dinos cross one of the checkpoint cards, then it gets flipped over and then we do whatever it said.
Oo.
So like this one says second win. Whoever's in fourth moves forward too.
Neat.
And then we
So it's a complete crapshoot. What's going to be happening?
Chaos.
Chaos.
Chaos. Okay. Chaos.
It's dinos. I mean
it's dinos. Yes. You know. So, in my head, it's the blowup
gets a cool short name and bronto, but ttop is sort of, but Raptor and T-Rex, they're they're the names.
Yeah, they need special names. Like
Terry the T-Rex and
we'll call him Terry
Rappy the raptor.
Yeah,
Terry and Raptor.
So, when one of the dinos reaches this checker spot, that means the race ends.
Okay.
We would look at who's in first, second, and third. If it is a tie, whoever's at the top is going to win.
So, the closer to the top is
closer to the top wins. Then we're going to score up those. We're going to discard all the cards, reset.
Okay.
Put out more checkpoints and do it again.
Mhm.
So, does the race get longer? Is that okay? So, first seven, then eight, then nine.
I see. Huh.
Yep.
Well, that's the room we've left here. And then at the end of the game, whoever has the most points wins.

Okay. Ready? I'll start as the announcer. Yeah. Sure. Sure.

These are these are favorites. You're these are fast. Just just hungry for the race. And then it's just top to bottom.
I mean, yeah. Yeah. She's following. She's following, right? And oh, Steak. She breaks out in front of the others. And then we have but Trytop won't be left behind.
Oh, poor Bronto. But Bronto moves
Bronto doesn't mean Yeah, he's eating breakfast. He's still there, you know.
He's figuring it out.
He's like,
so now we're going to go in order. Starting with me. I'm going to see who I think's going to win. I'm going to go for Staggy. Steg is cute. So I'm going to put Stagy into in front of me.
And now it's your turn.

It's interesting because if the last card moves again, this is kind of interesting.

Lincoln, who's your fave?

There goes T-Rex. Terry the T-Rex has already jumped up ahead with Steg. Okay. And then the announcer moves. So you get to announce. You're going to pull five cards.

And finally, we go WITH TERRY THE T-REX. HE'S catching
the game set back. He's still going fine. Okay, so I'm going to choose Bronto. What the heck?
Oh. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I mean, what an upset.
Let's do the sticky one. Is this one as soon as raptor moves it? Checkpoint. That could be good. from taking the T-Rex on your face.
Terry goes again
cuz he is mad.
Yes, he's mad that you know he had brontos.
Bronto the brontosaurus.
So we are going to go who going and it's bronto and we have the reptile.
Second and third both move one plus.

And the Bronto is

Okay. So then these get discarded.

So, the race got longer.

Well, Tritop was mad, so he's coming right out of the gate.

And then they have Vector. So T-Rex is pretty tired right now.
Yeah, he probably got really got wiped out of breath. So, starting with me,
I mean, Tritop is Terry. Terry's the T-Rex. How many are they the same amount of cards for each?
Oh, I do believe Terry has like it has more cards for the T-Rex.
And then Bronto is a little bit slower, but that's why he's more points if it happens up, right?
Uh, so I think I'm going to go for Terry the try cuz Terry is the
Terry's the T-Rex. We're going to go for the raptor. I want Stegy.

I don't know that StegY is going to win, though. I mean, that seems amazing.

Oh yeah. The final scores are Nikki with 23, Lincoln with 32, Kristoff with 38, and I have 41 points.

That was more fun than I thought.

I am a little disappointed that we didn't get to turn all those over.
I know. We never got any of that. I'm surprised.
See how it works. And that kind of makes it really exciting cuz you're not going to see all of those. Sure.
Every I don't I don't even want to reveal them. I want to save them for the next time I play the game.
I do. I want to be surprised by whatever shenanigans those uh do. But that was funto the art's pretty cute.
This was a very slippery track on this last race.
Yeah, that was
um I like it because it's in the uh let's say in in this kind of games that are come that came out now in the last couple of years. And I think that magical athlete and hot streak, yes, did like open the doors for these games where it's of course very luck based and you don't know what you're doing, but it's uh it's a lot emotions
that are happening and it's, you know, you're betting stuff. You don't know what's happening. But winning or losing comes goes a bit in the back because it's more of the of the atmosphere that you have with the game. For sure.
Uh like Hot Streak. I mean that was that is if you play it with the right people that is so much fun and this is something similar
because it's you don't know what's coming you don't know what's happening here but it's all like everybody is oh no everybody's like oh yay and I feel it's like a kind of a balance and this is what I like and this is I'm happy that these kind of games come because it's pure emotions

I agree with you I agree with you I think this has a little bit more agency than host streak cuz you're betting during the game versus
Well, it's all based on what comes up. So, that's a big difference, right? Like, do I take a card that's going to be maybe
maybe it's played its last run there? I mean, Steggy surprisingly made it, but
must, you know, cuz it was a lot of cards. I mean, it made a lot of movement.
Yeah. And I thought, oh, with three races, is it going to be too long? But no, that was very quick and snappy. And we made it more fun because we were like talking like the announcer and yelling is great. So it's a great party game and you know for a good [snorts]
good con game good for a big group and I think that any level of player right any good family game.
Uh so I really enjoyed it and I love the art on it too.
I mean the art is fantastic.
I think it's great. Uh it really is. I feel having the bet based on the actual current race. Yeah. Going on like how things are changing and you know we do multiple rounds makes it more
fun for me than let's say I mean I really like hot streak. Um
but who knows what happens in that game right something terrible happens and [clears throat] it's hilariously funny like you know the guy's now running the wrong direction stuff like that. So that's really good. This one
uh sort of works for me a little bit. I really like um Magical Athlete. I We have the original game from Yeah.
16 or however long ago it came out. Um and I really love what they did with that game now. It is phenomenal. But this is just way quicker. You don't have to explain all the things. You don't have to remember how things work where that is the problem I feel with Magical Athlete because each each uh contestant or racer is different and you have to remember how these things work. And it's not really hard, but I I feel like um this is very straightforward and very easy and a much like lighter and quicker party game. Yes.
Um definitely fun. And you know, of course, I'm always a goofball whenever it's any kind of race game. I get get way into it. But I think like like Hot Streak, you don't have to be an announcer with Hot Streak. The the atmosphere comes automatically. And I think we didn't have to do the announcer theatrical thing. It would have come automatically because you know if we just say no it's taggy you know but it would come and I like that the last player who has the least choices has a big choice too
to like something move ahead.
Exactly. And this is a little thing that it's very nice. I hated making that decision actually. Right. Like how I mean is there going to be more cards? Is it going to actually happen? I don't think it even did. Steggy just like wiped that like cleared the playing field for left the staggy so it would move one but then I only only got to score one of the cards. So
yeah.
Yeah. Well, there you go. That was But that's six that you I don't know. You would have Look how far ahead it was.
I would have had 12 if I had grabbed.
I mean, did you put cards back? Flip flip another few and see what would have happened. Okay,
try try.
Oh, Bronto from the back. Bronto. Oh my gosh.
So, there you go. Nikki P, you made the right choice. You wouldn't have gotten anything probably, right? Okay. Yeah.

Well, I mean, come on. Bronosauruses are so tall. As long as they're moving, it should be good.
Yeah, that's true.
This, you know, the stretch the next stretch across the finish line. Yes. Yes. Yeah.
But I love how it's just a deck of cards.
