game set in the rotating halls of altenew the game plays two players in 45 to 90 minutes is of light to medium complexity and was published by power of gamers in altanor secrets each player plays as a guild of adventurers battling each other in the tower of altanor a mysterious tower of rotating rooms the game is a tactical battle over four rounds each player battling to score as many points as they can by holding rooms atorium artifacts and other objectives at key moments in the game and the player who gains the most points wins to begin the game each player controls a team of six characters one fighter who gains a benefit in combat one dial holder who controls the rotation of the board two runners who can move more swiftly than the others and two beginners with no special power four of the six will begin the game in play back and forward each player activates one character at a time taking two actions with it this will often be to move either walking one hall or running two halls in the same direction and either way interacting with your new hall which could include being slowed down by water or being caught in a trap which might either harm your character or cause the ring you're on to rotate unexpectedly your other main type of action will be to attack your opponents either to harm them in combat attempt to steal their treasures or simply push them around the game uses a simple card based combat mechanic each player holds cards ranging between two and six and discards one randomly to begin the game each player simultaneously chooses one card these are reveal and then the attacker adds one and any fighter in the combat adds one higher score wins the cards you've played aren't taken back into hand until you're out of cards balancing the combat values over multiple rounds alternatively if you just want to push your opponents around without harming or robbing them simply roll a die and anything but a one is a success most critical to the game is the player's manipulation of the board each dial holder begins the game with eight cards each allowing one of the towers rings to be rotated in a certain direction most of these are played as free actions on the dial holder's activation but two of them are interruptions which you'll play after an opponent has announced an action but before they've resolved it giving you the opportunity to rotate the board to disrupt their plans all cards are single use but can be replenished at the nexus in the center of the board alternator secrets is a tactical objective based game and there are four main ways to score by holding both of the objective holes at the end of an activation by holding treasures at the end of a round by holding both base camps at the ends of round three or four or by eliminating the opponent's fighter in combat fighters and other major roles have four health while the beginners start with three completed objectives are marked in the round they were completed on the scoreboard and points are counted up after four rounds of play with some objectives being worth more than others additionally prior to the game each player places a bet on which of the four objective types they plan to specialize in and will score up to a bonus six points based on their success in that objective further special abilities are available to give the players tactical advantages among the asymmetrical guilds the atori scholars have more flexibility to rotate the dials and the alchemists can more effectively defend treasures from being robbed and among the once-off ability cards are surprise actions increases to defense or attack and so on overall eldonor secrets provides a tight and quick tactical battle with only four rounds only two actions per character per turn and the ability to interrupt an opponent's precious action with an unexpected ring rotation efficiency is paramount as players fight for points but defensive tactics cannot be ignored as the points your opponent will gain for knocking out your fighter are plentiful the multi-dimensional considerations of managing the five rings into a layout which best suits your game is in itself an intricate chess match unique to this game for a simpler contest there are also rules for a straightforward dice based battle instead of the more strategic card play and that's quick how to play for
