Most Exciting Co-Op Games at Essen Spiel 2026 – PART 2 #boardgames
Transcript
What are the most exciting cooperative board games at Essen Spiel this year in 2026? Let me show you three more games that I'm excited about. The first game is Potemkin Villages. This is a historic game about Catherine the Great's visit to Crimea and the people's attempt to make everything look better than it really was. Mechanically speaking, this is a trick-taking game and every time someone takes a trick, they get to enact the power of their character's ability. After each trick, Catherine's boat is going to move down the river. So, players have to work together to keep a card at least one step ahead of her. I just love this idea though of having your actions be determined by who wins the trick. That's what I want to try out. The next game is Melodies. Melodies is a cooperative card shedding game.
What that means is all players are working together to eliminate their cards and there are just frankly a lot of restrictions on how they play their cards. First of all, you can't adjust the order of the cards in your hand. You have to play them in the order they appear. So, if you want to play cards in the increasing order, they got to be next to each other already. The game has its name because of the melody representing the the values of the cards that are played each round. Sounds like some really cool restrictions and I want to try that out. And then finally, there's Room. Room is a game a cooperative game where players are controlling race cars and the way they're doing this is they're drawing cards secretly and moving their race car as far as they think it should go based on the value of their card, but there's no scale. So, it's all really subjective. I would think of this as like The Mind where The Mind you're timing things out subjectively in order to play all your cards. In this one, you're playing through an entire race and you want the fastest card to win and the slowest card to lose, but you can't say how fast your car is going. You just have to show by pushing it. Sounds like something I really want to try out.
Vroom. Which of these are you most excited about? Let me know in the comments and tell me what to cover next.
