(Button Shy Preview) A Dragon's Gift Overview | DaniCha
Hi everyone, Danielle here. I'm doing a solo overview of A Dragon's Gift by Scott Alms. This is an upcoming game um that will be on Kickstarter by Buttonshy. So definitely check out the link in the description below if you're interested in backing it. Um but as you can expect, this is an 18 card uh wallet type game.
So, we have um a bunch of these different cards which we will be using to um create a path so that we can gather resources uh craft resources as well and uh ultimately craft a gift for a dragon. So, um we're going to see how this goes, but this is just going to be a quick overview on how this game works and you can make a decision on whether or not um this game is for you.
All right. So, let's take a look at the cards here. So, these virtually all kind of look the same, but when you flip them over, there will be six cards that have different backs. So, these are going to be your transport cards. What you're going to do when you set up is you're going to just shuffle them.
And then you're going to put three of them face up towards the top of your player area. um with the transport side face up I mean so we have the stage coach cannon sender and autocopter and these are three cards which we will be able to use throughout the game we'll be able to exhaust them use their their ability and uh ready them if we are able to create a resource that matches the top right uh resource on the cards itself and then reuse those cards in a future turn.
Um, and then lastly, we are going to grab just one more card off the top of this deck, and this will be the gift. And this is going to be the special card we want to resolve to potentially win the game. So, we'll set the gift off to the side. We have the three transport cards, and these remaining two cards that have the transport on the other side will be removed from uh the game and just set aside.
So, we have the rest of these cards, and these cards are the village cards. So, we're going to just uh shuffle these up. And you're going to want to make sure that um the side with the check marks are all on um kind of the same side when you're shuffling. And then flip them over so that you don't see that check mark and that you see this kind of conversion uh with this uh arrow showing that you need the resources to create that or craft that other resource.
So, we'll shuffle that up and then create a deck. We're going to put one out in the center of your player area and then you're going to grab um a card into your hand. So, this is what you'll need to do as part of the setup. All right. So, I zoomed out a little bit so that we could see more of the placement of the cards.
Basically, this is going to be the first card that's out. Let's take a closer look at it. So, we have this special resource that we could craft if we have these two resources within reach. Um, so on your turn, there's a few things you can decide to do. The thing you're probably going to want to do, especially on the first turn, uh, will be expanding the village.
So, to do that, you place the card from your hand into the village, um, following some of the placement rules. So you can place this card so that uh the the roads always match like that. You can place this card just like this. The roads are matching just like that. Put it down here as well. Um or you could put it directly above it, directly below it.
Um but what you can't do is rotate the card 90°. Um you won't be able to do any placement like that. You also can't overlap cards. And then um lastly, you uh you want to always just make sure that all the roads are connected whenever possible. So um as an example turn, uh I will expand the village and I will place this card um right here.
So I'll connect these just like this. And then I draw a card without changing or flipping over the card. I'm just grabbing it into my hand. And this is my next card in my hand. And I can take another turn. So when I take another turn, I could expand a village or I could craft a resource. So um each village card basically shows the crafts person who can create a crafted resource from one to three resources depending on what it needs.
Um and to craft a resource, you get to choose a card with a craft person. you look at the required resources and then uh you flip that card horizontally to the supplied side where I showed you in the beginning of the video that has a check mark. Um so be to be able to do that you have to do a resource delivery.
So I'll explain that in a second. To do a resource delivery uh you could use uh the cards that are directly within uh two cards of its location. So right now uh it's not possible to do that but let's continue expanding and um maybe we can think through how we can show that on this overview. So I'll place that to expand and then I have this next card and just so you know you clearly see what the next card is going to be.
So you could be planning your turn according to what you see already coming up on your uh future turn. So, we can place this one um in a way that we could Yeah, I guess we'll we'll try placing it like this and see what happens. And we have this. And I'm interested in this one because it has this icon for this um green uh which this resource would be required to craft this.
So, I'm going to try to connect it at least two cards away to that. So, let's see if I can do that. Um, so I'll do that. And this is two cards away. So, the resource is here. I would have to go through this path and follow and go here. So, now we just need this um resource here. Um, I don't see it coming up in my card in my hand or on the deck.
So, I might need to use a transport card. A transport card can just let me kind of break some of the rules and use the abilities to complete a um uh crafting resource. But let me see. I guess I'll place this one uh you know what? I'll place this one up here and I will H kind of limited by space in a way because I could put this card right on top and fulfill this order.
Uh so I might need to move things around. So let me just uh move these over a little bit. And I'll place this card to and expand my village. And now this icon can easily get to this one. draw that card before I start my next action which is to do a direct delivery because it's within two cards of this.
So now I flip this over to its completed side or supplied side and now I have this resource. Um so this resource is required by this one to create a a um uh a special purple resource. So, this has a ways to go and it's not really connected. So, what I could do if I end up getting this resource created, um, yeah, it's a bit of a maze.
I could use using roads deliver a resource up to six cards away, which is not possible right now cuz no roads are connected to that. But I could see what I can do about cannon center. Ignoring roads deliver a resource up to one one card away. That's not going to help either. Um, ignoring roads deliver a resource to any crafts person to the same row or column.
Cards must meet fully edgeto edge with no offsets to be part of the same row or column. Okay, so that could work. I could use uh autocopter and h there's potential there. All right. So, for this I don't think there's anything I can really do. Um but I'll put it here and then I'll be able to create this.
Wrap that into my hand. This will complete this um craft. And then I'll flip it over. And now we have this. So that is one, two, two cards away. So now I could complete this if I use the autocopter. So I go ahead and use the autocopter and turn it sideways. And now this resource and this resource is completing this uh order essentially.
So I'm going to flip that over. And that's completed. So, what's cool about that is this is one of the special orders that I need to complete this card. And then I also need this as well. And I still kind of need this uh uh circular one, which I could probably get if I fulfill this order. Um, so to fulfill this order, I'm going to actually use stage coach, which allows me to use rows and deliver a resource up to six cards away.
And that is here. So, this can go all the way around um and come around this way all the way to this card, which is within six cards. That's going to be one, two, three, four, five. So, flip this over to complete it. And now I have the um circular uh icon that I needed for the for the gift. So at this point I could decide to craft the gift.
Um and if that's the case, I could potentially win the game. Um so let's see with the craft the gift. If we have placed this somewhere that it can reach all of it. So let's see if we can. Um so if I put it here this will reach within one this will reach within two and then this will reach within three uh two as well.
So we'll put it right here and we'll be able to craft this gift. Um so that's that icon, that icon, and that icon. So at that point, uh we don't flip it, but we end up just winning the game. So, at that point, we we score a point for each crafted resource in my resource in my village. Um, this gift doesn't count uh towards the score.
Um, but let's count how many we were able to craft. So, we did one 2 3 four. So, four of them is just four points. So, at minimum, you want to try to uh score nine to win the game. Otherwise, anything less is considered a loss. But this gives you a really good um overview of just kind of the mechanics of this game.
Um where you place the cards definitely matters because uh you need the resource to be uh within two cards of the re the card that requires that resource to craft the uh special resource. So um def definitely thinky and these transport cards are definitely helpful and depending on the three that you end up getting uh could change the game for you.
So, I think the replayability is really unique here, especially because um obviously the order of how these cards come out, the transport cards that you might get on your turn, and also the gift that ends up being the one you're trying to fulfill is definitely going to um change up the game for you.
But all right, um I hope you enjoyed this overview of a dragon's gift.
