World Order - Unboxing
Mhm. >> Right, I think we are live. Good afternoon everybody. Thank you very much for joining me. Let me know if you can hear me and see me okay. And welcome to a quick unboxing video before I head off to the Netherlands. I am away this weekend at a secret location in the Netherlands for three, four days of gaming.
Some secret prototypes. Can't talk about it. Anyway, World Order. This is the deluxe version of World Order with all of the bits. This is a review copy of the game. I am not doing a review video on it, but, you know, it's a free copy from the publisher because I work with them professionally. I've created a play through video and week after next I am going to be at UK Games Expo running demos of this game.
So, if you are going to UK Games Expo and you want to stop on by, see the game, perhaps get a demo from me. I'm only working in the mornings mornings, then you can. AV's all good. Excellent. Right. So, we've got all sorts of bits here. The one thing I'm not going to open is this. It's card sleeves. So, we don't need to see card sleeves.
We'll move that off to one side. But, we will have a look at the play mat. We will have a look at this expansion which I didn't actually know about. We'll have a look at the World Order concepts book. We'll have a look at that. But, first, let's dive into this. As I mentioned, this is the deluxe version of the game.
So, we have a sleeve. If you don't recognize that front cover, that's because it's a sleeve. Put that to one side, and this is the cover that we all know. So, this game was successfully funded through crowdfunding. It is the second game from Hegemonic Project Games, and it is very different from Hegemony.
If you have played Hegemony, or you know of it, and you're thinking this is going to be the same type of game, it is and it's not. Certainly, it is nowhere near as complex, but it is set in the world. Whereas Hegemony was kind of a bit of an abstract one, this is actually set in the real world in the year 2010.
So, we've got actually got in the top, we've got Diplomacy and Dominance. So, this is another mini expansion rulebook. Yeah, enriches the strategic depths of World Order. So, this this must be included. Now, whether this is included in the deluxe version and not in the retail version, I don't know. I can't answer that question, but I'm sure there's some bits for that.
It Yeah, there's some bits for that, which will be in here. Put that to one side for now. We have some player aids. We have the rules of the game. So, I've not read this. I've not seen this. Uh last time I played this was quite a while ago, but I'm actually taking this with me to the Netherlands this weekend, because I am running uh well, I'm playing a couple of games of it this weekend in preparation for UK Games Expo.
So, let's just zoom in a little bit. Uh let's just move this camera around. There we go. Right, so you can see the rulebook. We've got lots of white space. Okay, so Diplomacy and Dominance is included in both Kickstarter editions, and it includes the solo mode automa. Excellent. So, we have set up there.
A nice piece of artwork. Then we got how to play. So, yeah, the rules of the game it's not that complicated from what I remember. These are the rules. It shows what to do. And that's probably it. Yeah. Aftermath. Optional extras. And then some FAQ. Yeah, so not not too many rules. We have money. Right, so let's do Paul's punch test.
Paul's punch test on the money. Oh. Yeah. Yeah, that's all popping out mostly cleanly. There's a couple that were catching, but just be careful when you're punching them out, but yeah, generally that's fine. We also have some tokens, which I'm not going to bother punching out. And we have the map. Now, both of the games that they've done so far has have got a particular graphic style to them, which I quite like.
It's fairly minimalist. And black is a prominent color. So, that's is the map of the world. Not too big. Now, one thing that I have not been keen on in the board game industry over the last few years is that things are getting bigger. And whilst my eyesight is getting worse, and I like things getting bigger so that I can see them, I felt that a number of games that have come out in the last few years take up more space than they need to.
So, seeing this as a nice compact board that isn't too big is good. We're going to have some cards down here. And effectively, it's an area control stroke area majority game. I don't really know the difference between the two, but players over the course of six rounds are going to be placing cubes onto these spaces.
But, how you put those cubes on, there's different ways to do it. You can do it through military might, you can do it through economic power, various other things. And there is a little bit of asymmetry in the game because the four powers of United States of America, Europe, we have Russia, and we have China.
They are going to be affecting the world in different ways. So, China's really good at trading, Russia's got lots of oil, etc., etc. Now, this game is set in 2010. So, there are parts of this game which are potentially a little bit of a sensitive area with what's going on in the world at the moment, but this is kind of before that happened.
So, we have some player trays. Again, I'm not sure exactly what's in the deluxe compared to the retail version of the game, but let's have a look here. Right, player boards. Let's have a look at one of these player boards. So, this is the player board for the United States of America. And what you're going to be doing is putting various markers on here to choose your showing your production levels of the various types of resources, and then you're going to be placing the resources down here.
So, for example, if you you only have one marker to represent Um so, you know, rocks, resources, minerals. If you've got none of it, it goes there. If you've got four of it, it goes there. So, you don't have multiple ones of these. And yes, these are dual layered. Again, I don't know if they're dual layered in both editions, but they are certainly dual layered in this version of the game.
One concern with anybody who does dual layer boards out of the box is that they're going to warp. Now, straight away, I can tell you that these are not warped, but sometimes the warping only happens after you've had the game out for a week. It's It's really weird. Warped boards are a a bane of everybody's lives, and it's really difficult to to prevent them from happening.
So, yeah, there is some asymmetry in the players as I've mentioned. This is the United States of America. Then we have the European Union. Then we have the People's Republic of China, and we have the Russian Federation as well. Right, what else have we got in the box? Well, we've we've we've shown you the the components.
In fact, let me show you the components a little bit more. So, we have this one I think represents technology, oil, we've got minerals, we've got food. Can't remember what the briefcase is. Uh and we've got that one as well. So, yeah, I can't remember the exact name of these. Don't worry, I will be learning the game if you get in a demo from me.
So, that I actually can teach it properly. While we're here, let's have a look at the rest of the components. We've got some cubes. So, these are the cubes for the four different players, I believe. No, not cubes for the four different players. We've also got the tanks. We'll have a look at those as well.
In fact, what I'm going to do is I'm going to switch to the other camera. I'm just going to show you So, these are the wooden tanks. I believe these are for the uh the normal edition of the game. But, don't worry, I do have the deluxe edition. So, I actually have the deluxe tanks as well. So, Here we go.
Right, that's those. So, yes, we have some metal coins. Nice chunky metal coins. Let me show you these on the big camera as well. We have some 20s. Yeah, these these are really nice. You could accidentally spend these in the shop. I'm sure if I went out, not that I use money these days, but yeah, these actually look like proper proper coins.
So, yeah, they look pretty cool. All right, that's those. We'll get those out of the way. What else have we got? We've got cards. So, lots of different cards included in the game. We've got some nice um plastic cubes as well, transparent cubes. Not sure what these are for. Uh, but we have some packs of cards.
I'll show you some of these on the big camera in a minute as well. And then we've got some silk screen printed components for the various superpowers in the various tracks. And we've got some more cards as well. Right, and that you might think is it. But it's not, because below this, surprise, surprise, is the deluxe stuff.
Now, we'll get to that in a minute. Don't get too excited. But we're now going to have a look at some of the cards just to show you what the art style and the graphic design is like on the cards. If I can get into them. Let's see this. So, there's a little bit of asymmetry in the game with the different player boards, but there's also a symmetry in the game in the way that certain Uh, each nation will have its own special cards.
So, you can see that this is a card for the American nation. So, the Americas have a number of cards. Then we've got some for the EU. And these are all thematically tied to what the particular nation is for, be good or bad. So, yeah, we have we have some of those. We've also got some other cards which look like look like goals to me.
So, yeah, goals for uh, America, Europe, etc., etc. Lots of lots of these cards. These are the main cards of the game. Let me show you some different ones. So, yeah, the the core mechanism of the game is card play. And you will have a certain number of these cards, and you will play these cards. I think there's five turns in each round from what I remember.
And there's a deck building element to the game as well, because you can actually get more of these cards over the course of the game. Personally, I quite like the art style and I like the clean graphic design look of these cards. I'm just going to see I'm just going to look through other ones to see if there's anything else new to show you or it I think it's just more of the same.
And the other type of card to show you, if I can get into this little pack here, are the small cards. Ah, there we go. Just found it. Right. So, the small cards are basically special abilities that you can get over the course of the game. You can You can develop these and these are going to improve your particular uh nation with what it's going to do.
Uh I seem to remember I do remember these. And then you've got all of the different countries. So, the countries will appear as these cards and you will be essentially trying to take control of these various countries which will give you various kinds of benefit over the course of the game. It shows you what they produce.
Uh it shows you whether you can have a military base there. It shows you which nations can actually take control of these. So, yeah, there's basically all of the countries around the world. There are There are cards for this. And those will come up over the course of the game. So, yeah, quite a few cards included in it and I've got the sleeves.
So, one thing that I will be doing in the car on the way to the Netherlands is is probably sleeving this. Um right. That's very quick whistle-stop tour of this. Let's now have a look at the deluxe stuff underneath here. So, this is where we have plastic tanks. Makes me very happy cuz I don't know why, but ever since I was young, I've always liked tanks.
So, let's show you these on the on the big camera, I think. So, it looks like we've got two types of tanks. We've got some small ones, and we've got some larger ones. I don't know if these just represent five tanks. It also looks like it's a little bit out of focus. So, I'm just going to set the focus so that it's a bit more uh it's a bit better.
And we've got different tanks. So, yeah, the the blue ones, they are actually a different mold. And then there you got the yellow ones. And then we've got the red ones as well. So, yeah, four different molds of tanks, which represents So, this is not a war game, as Mark Monk said in his video. You're not going to be moving these tanks into enemy territories and rolling dice and fighting or anything like that.
The tanks represent military power. You also have these, which I think these might just be cosmetic. I think these just go in front of your um player board, just to Yeah, or or they might be score markers, I'm not quite sure, but they're they're quite nice. We've got these as well. We've got this. And we've got a big bag of these.
So, these are going to be used instead of the cardboard components. So, we've got those, and we've got I believe these are military camps as well. So, focus markers, that's what they are. Um but yes, very happy to have received the deluxe version of the game. Thank you very much to Hegemony Project Games for supporting the channel.
And yeah, as I say, I will be at UK Games Expo in a couple of weeks' time. They will be running demos of this game all day, every day. I'm just going to be demoing in the mornings. I'm going to be doing, I think, two or three demos each day in the mornings. So, if you're interested in swinging by to try the game out, either with me or with somebody else, you can.
I did a playthrough video of this when it was on crowdfunding. That video has actually been getting a lot of views in the last week or so because I think some backers are starting to get this game and people are going back and watching my old video. Now, if you do go and watch my old video, it was filmed with a prototype copy of the game.
Some of the rules have definitely changed. So, a few people have asked me, is there going to be another play-through coming to the channel? I would like to. Now that I've got the game, I do enjoy the game and I do want to play it again. I will just have to somehow try and find time to play it. So, I don't have any planned sponsored videos coming out for the game.
It will be down to whether I can find the time to to fit it in. I would like to because one criticism that content creators get is that they're all about hyping the game when it's on crowdfunding and then when it comes out, they never play it again. I'm not one of those people. I do want to play these games that I enjoy.
The ones I enjoy anyway, maybe not the ones that I didn't enjoy. But, when they come out, I want to actually get them played. And I do sometimes, it's just not always here on the channel. So, yeah. Mat, play mat. That's it. I was I was going to say we we have finished, but we haven't finished because we've got more stuff to show.
I'm all I'm getting a little bit flustered because I haven't finished packing yet and I'm out at the theater tonight. That doesn't go on there. So. Right, let's have a look at the play mat quickly cuz I've got to put all of this away. I might just have to throw all of this in the box and throw it in the car.
Right, the play mat. So, I'm guessing the play mat just replaces the board. I think that's what it does. Um how am I going to get into it? Right. There we go. So, yes, it's a nice play mat that is exactly the the size and shape as the board. And it's stitched neoprene. It looks quite thick. So, yeah, there you go.
That's that. Um the diplomacy and dominance, we kind of mentioned this, but I think all of these cards and all of these components, apart from this, they're all just mixed in. They're all mixed in to the rest of it. So, I'm hoping that there's a little icon on them to tell me which ones are from the expansion, which ones are not, so that I can I can work it out.
Right. Notes on ruling the world. So, this is my diary of how I'm going to take over the world and all of the things that I'm going to do when I get into power. It is essentially a notebook. So, it's currently blank cuz I haven't worked out how I'm going to take over the world yet, but once I do, I will be writing it in here.
So, that's uh nice little notebook. Next thing to mention is the world order concepts, and I'm really glad that they've done this, actually, because most games don't do this, but there's actually a lot of historical accuracy with this game, and there's a lot of research that's gone into it. And this, for those people who like this sort of thing, this is essentially these are the authors of the book, and what we've got is we've got a an academic's look at the world situation as it was in 2010.
Now, that that's quite bright, isn't it? Um but yeah, this is this is a reading book, and I know some people that have had a look at this, and they've said it's a fascinating read to sort of see how things work. And this is all of the information that formed the basis for the creation of this game. Um so, yeah, that's that's that.
And then we've got world in turmoil. So, this must have been an optional add-on extra, not a stand-alone game. And this says, Events that shaped the 21st century an expansion for world order. Right. Now, I'm not going to be using this expansion the first couple of times that I play it cuz I like to get a handle on the base game at least first.
Oh, we got another little map. Okay. And it looks like it's events. It says it's events. So, we've got some extra cubes. We've got some extra cards. Got a big deck of cards here and some little cards. And it looks like there's just going to be various events that happen which are going to change the way that the game plays.
I don't know why that camera is so bright today. Apologies for that. I'm uh yeah. It's um it's it's definitely super super bright. See what's going on. There we go. It's a bit too late to change it now, but yeah, there's that. So, yeah, we got we got an expansion. If you want to play with some extra extra events.
I don't know. I'm always concerned when I see games that add events like this because even games that I really enjoy like Spirit Island and Cloudspire and things like that, sometimes you start adding events in and it ends up shifting the balance of the game one way or the other and yeah, I have no idea.
I I I don't know anything about this. It might be absolutely fine. I'm just a little concerned when games start throwing in events and how it affects the balance of the game. But as I say, I'm just saying that based on personal experience with other games. Right. Yes, we're all done now. Apologies for everything being too bright.
I don't know what's going on with the camera at the moment. It keeps it it's changing its mind on a daily basis as to what it's deciding to do. Um but yeah, we're all done. I need to get this packed away. Then I need to get packing and some of you who are watching this, I might see you over the next few days in the Netherlands.
Otherwise, UK Games Expo. And there's not going to be much content on the channel while I'm away because I'm just not here. So, yeah, I'll be I'll be picking things up when I get back from UK Games Expo. But, thank you very much to everybody for watching. Thank you very much to all of my patron supporters.
If you like the content that I create and you want to support me directly, you can do so at patreon.com/gamingrules. And in fact, if you are a patron supporter, I haven't told you this yet, but I'm planning to do a series of live streams while I'm away in the Netherlands. I am taking my laptop, webcam, microphones with me.
There will be some patron only bonus live streams coming at the evening uh while I'm away. So, yes, look forward to that. Chizzle. See you next time. Bye-bye. >> [music]
