Radlands - Board Game Review
[Music] this time on allies or enemies we are looking at radlands designed by Daniel picnic radlands is a two-player head-to-head card game that sees players recruiting various postapocalyptic Punk types in an effort to destroy each other's camps and take control of the precious water supply the art style is all electric blue and pink tinge comic book style art that reminds players of the coolest part of Mad Max Tank Girl or Borderlands but before we ride Eternal shiny and chrome let's do the tell of how it plays in radlands your job is to destroy your opponent's camps before they destroy yours each player starts the game with three randomly selected camps in their back row and two rows of space in front of those for people who will provide protection for you and danger for your arrival if you have the optional playm that these rows will be laid out if you just went with a small box like us you're just going to have to imagine them each turn you will draw a card and do a combination of playing or activating cards by paying water or scrapping cards by discarding for an instant benefit cards do things like attack people or camps or gain punks or gain water or heal damaged cards if a card takes damage it turns sideways if it gets gets hit again it's lost there are also event cards that work on a round timer system as a kind of ticking time bomb and a bunch more nuances in the system but the gist is you keep playing and activating until someone has had all three camps destroyed and we find out who is the true Road Warrior outside of a dozen water tokens rylands is really just a small box full of cards but those cards are very very cool the artwork is What attracted us to the game and it drips with theme at every turn the characters all have tons of Personality enough so that we wish there was a comic book or cartoon based on this theme we want to know the background of Vera vosch or Argo yesi or Carly Blaze this feels like a cool little world game-wise everything does its job well the icons are clear the rule book is short but clear and while we were tempted by that game that you really can live without it just fine this is a two-player game it will only play at two that will be the highest and lowest number of people you can play at so radlands is a fast-paced 20-minute card game and with that comes a certain amount of built-in replayability but it goes well above and beyond first there are oodles of camps of which you will only use three per game game and they all work differently and will change your play style and even though the victory condition never changes there are a lot of roads to get there one game you are relying on big event bombs the next you are nickel and diming with a bunch of people the next you are drawing and scrapping cards like crazy your choices are determined by what you do with the small amount of water cards and actions you have on hand and how you duct tape it all together but there is a lot of room within that for some very vient and satisfying [Music] creativity radlands is kind of a filler but it feels like more than your average filler this could very well be a game you just pull out for a quick ultraviolent warm-up or it could be something you play a best of five of over the evening there are a few caveats it will help if you like this kind of theme and art style and you will need to be at least vaguely interested in ative card games and you will need someone to play with who's going to be a good head-to-head opponent and won't take it too hard that you keep trying to ruin all of their plans but if you do check those boxes there is a solid amount of depth in this system and that art style is pretty great and that is it have you played radlands what did you think let us know in the comments or let us know about other head-to-head card games that you might recommend and as always please do like and subscribe and hopefully we'll see you all next time for another game
