OFPG - Episode 22 (Beyond Monopoly 2)
[Music] everybody this is part two of our I guess a series of beyond monopoly where we're just talking about how families and people can get beyond monopoly are the very classic games and get into this great hobby of ours now this one we're gonna be talking we give starlit question we're just gonna kind of talk about it this one has been laying on my heart for a long time and that's going to board game conventions activities events meetups things like that because you know in the in our history of this you know of this hobby you know I would ask you to go to a con ourselveses you say no mate because I don't feel like being the only one and I would go and I'd beat on one yeah and you know it's kind of its kind of comfortable but you deal with it because I love the games I love playing the games and love this being you know just doing stuff at the gaming table but I you know I always said I wish I could see you know some more you know more black folk their color yeah yeah that's what you know to feel yeah so that was one of my biggest hesitation yeah well he's a I'm gonna go to this Meetup and I thought this group aboard gave me and the first time I went to one yeah we would only one thing mm-hmm and I have to say I wasn't quite comfortable now not that I haven't grown up in diverse situations yes I went to diverse high school yes I went to a diverse College yes I lived a diverse City after college she had a Washington Seattle but sometimes we especially when you want to just relax and fun you want to feel comfortable yes and when you go into a room and you look around and nobody looks like you and those folks doing the look at you like why are you here it can be very off-putting yeah and and we always have to make sure we take a game or two just in case the plane not friendly enough to really want to play with you you know I decided I didn't want him going by himself here so we just have to go we would play a game where we go into a room and if people just looked at us we go ahead and find a space and we just play by ourselves for a little while and if no one talked to us or we didn't see an opportunity to talk to other people we just leave now in Houston we had you know friends that we could you know we had you know your base of friends that would we had some comfortable places to play yeah and it was there we played a lot of games yeah you know and we finally find some people would talk to us um wouldn't your friends made out of you afraid that we are still friends but to this day yes we are they're still very active in the hobby yeah and I'm happy for that you know and then one of our really good friends at least you know female Frances Kemp yeah can we kill Lucas and kill Lucas and I we've mentioned this before we were at Comic Palooza and we went to the wargaming game area and they had a boardgame librarian she was over the library she was one anything she introduced us to katrakas and also World's Fair was fair and we got to know Kim from there and from that point we became friends we found that out of home and played games with other places with Kim and so there are people at this time and if it was scary if we were too scared to go because we've had someone tell us that at a recent convention that happened here they had a friend of a person of color that wanted to come to a con was dead nope not gonna go cuz I would be the only one and I just don't want to deal with that yeah that was one of my viewers and now you're a comment that was so happy to get our channel here because they had a friend of color who didn't want to go to a con because they didn't want to be the only one yeah and we just want to say we know where you've been and we know how you feel yeah but if we would have not did that for conclusive and just said nope don't want to go they'll get only one which we kind of work we would have missed out on dropping lists missed out on rules fair great gaining world's fair and we would have missed out meeting kill me because Kim is still a good friend his name bent over to our house she has gotten us deep deeper into the board game in hobby yeah you know so so sometimes you got to get out of your company yes you do and we did we would just venture out and I remember we went to a couple of them at cafe Express another situation where it's a cafe not a Govi cafe and people are trying to play board games that are very rounders trying to eat and I can do sit to me to play games yeah but we went a few times we met another guy there by Charles Frost and he was a job we would go to things with him and we were a few times I really expect to see another person of coma yeah the black guy yes it was good to see him you're like oh my god and he was in charge of the gaming night yeah so is that okay we got somebody else who really knows board gaming yeah look like us now he hurts the first time we did Terra Mystica I hear her it did make us feel careful so what we want to tell you in order to get beyond Monopoly mm-hmm that means breaking outside of your comfort zone and going to those events those Meetup and letting yourself know and telling yourself I don't care who's there I can be there too I'm bringing something to the table even if you're there to learn new game you don't let the fear or or just the thought that it's only gonna be me there keep you from going yeah make a friend yeah you know I take the friends take the free you know there's all saying you know my mom used to tell me about each one reach one yeah you know yeah tell your friends that you know like to play again say hey there's a con going on you know and I don't know come with me come on you know at least if no one talks to you which I don't think that would be the case but if they know you got someone there and at these conventions and these meetups and these gaming days there's usually someone there teaching mm-hmm so if you want to learn in the game just go to a table although asti the organizers anyone teaching a game today that I can learn and that's the way they can help you get more alcomate into this happen yeah if there's a con around and we there we played on place of the game [Music] that work is that work is that work yeah just to figure out ways to help you go mostly tell you what we did yeah yeah I get beyond to sit up in your house we do a lot of house play with our family because you know we're dealing with co19 there's gonna come to an end are going to the game shop you know here behind ya you know I play with other people or you know go to some of the cons such as new code or Africa and that's what we're gonna be and if you're in the area and you know I'm gonna get my wife to go to Gen Con you know she was kind of apprehensive going to Gen Con but she don't go you don't go and all some of the other big ones out there we don't go we don't do that we stay with our local clouds especially we lived in Houston because we had coming Palooza yeah it had a really big gaming component you used to I used to come shopping it had a lot of those smaller things going on so it kept us pretty busy here there's another one game con I was in Galveston so we especially if you have a teenager they actually had a video game here so our son when he got tired of playing board games with us here you go play his video games and got - Smash Bros tournament he was happy we just want to help you do whatever take you get beyond monopoly don't be afraid don't be afraid okay go go to that con meetup event don't be afraid this happens every yeah I don't care what it looks like when you walk through the door mmm-hmm I don't care who you see when you walk through the door know that you have a place there you have a place you have yes yeah and you stay there you plant yourself at a table you let them play you play that game enjoy yes yes that sounds good yeah sound good so hopefully something we said today will help you yeah yes getting beyond monopoly so I guess we don't end it here and like us share us hit the notification bail check us out on Twitter Facebook Instagram yeah just come you know let's let's chill you know just keep talking about games that we love and that we hope you love too so until next time folks [Music]
