Dune Arrakis Dawn of the Fremen - Time to negotiate and backstab ;P
dictate me yeah you see you've seen it but you've seen it like many times so like the next new one in the june universe june iraqis donate the freeman what we think of it how does it play stay tuned [Music] hi everyone it's stella from mipple university and today i'm actually joined by my special guest my friend henry hello so henry is from han solo han solo usually you do a lot of solo play through but now we are you are branching out yeah and digging into the review side of things i've got a particular love for these area control games and i thought i'd come on and help stella review um june arrakis thank you so much for that hand so we do bring in guests sometimes with you know luke how friends is the expert of social deduction is played like thousands and thousands of social deduction game i usually bring him in which will you'll probably see soon again henry is more like the expert and type of game as well so why not bring you in and plus you are part of make when you're president now yeah yeah yeah so might as well do this so this is junior records this is the newest one by gailforth9 who brought up other most of other dune games and gonna talk about the overview of the game before our thoughts so take it henry so in june arrakis we are buying for control of um the planet arrakis we are various uh tribes uh so basically we've just become free men we've escaped from our sort of owners and we're settling on these new lands and we're each controlling the tribe and we're trying to fight over for control over the um land and occupy the best space um and this that before the june movie yeah it's set before so this is sort of how the how the framing sort of formed their tribe on june got it so at the beginning of the game uh where the map sort of starts looking like this there's actually none of these on the board as well so the game board is completely blank no icon to iconography to speak of and together yeah and it just stays like this this is the whole game [Laughter] and basically the game starts you sort of like do a joint setup as the intro of the game so you're going to start by creating these cliffs and these desert sort of natural barriers that are going to form additional borders on this map normally the drum sound is the one area of the desert that no one can enter and all these other territories are free space wherever at start we'll roll a dice whatever we get this is how many cliffs we put out onto the board so these are blocking the area we do these in turn order and we're just going to be blocking areas like so once we've placed the number rolled on the dose we will then proceed to in turn order place down these resource sites and these will show where race precious resources are going to be um getting produced during the game so yeah one player at a time yeah yeah so these we're going to be fighting over control for these resources and these resources are going to be bringing us four of the core precious resources of june which are uh food water spice and sand worm teeth and these are used for making the size knifes that they use so it's like like how they produce their weapons so nice yeah um so once we've i believe 11 of these resource production sites be placed on the board they'll be placed face down and we'll flip them all over and find out where they are after we've done that we'll then be taking it in turns to place our our warriors and um to fill up the board fill up the board and obviously people are going to be trying to snuggle up these um resource sites straight away yeah and we're gonna have so if you're playing with more than two go games two to four players so take it in turns putting these guys out so he'll probably go over here i might go here might go here and so on and you want to be trying to create strong bonds or you sort of the more adjacent areas that you have next to each other yeah sort of they help each other out in fights bias also trying to make sure you get as many resource things as you can so there's a fair bit of tactics in here and you really gotta it's quite important that you really sort of place place well and you sort of want to be taking the precious spots but also creating yourself a little base somewhere um the game then proceeds over um these six phases and i'll just have it up on that board here you can see that okay um and you just go from top to bottom here and phases most of the phases will happen every round but there's a chance that some phases will be skipped over as you go so um i'll just go for each of the phases um i should explain first that um the objective of the game yeah is um when you gather these resources so these production sites will be gathering these resources out here um you'll need to create a pile of the four different resources in one territory and then in this development phase you can trade four resources of the same type into one of these uh of the different types of stitch stitches sorry if i'm saying that wrong but the stitch uh what differentiation [Music] uh yes four four different types or four um spices because it's spicy it's kind of like a wild um so and if you can manage to do that you can create one of these in your development phase and a player needs to control three of these in order to win the game at the end of the action phase yeah and you have to defend them once you make them so you might not have to make any of them during the game if you just keep other people yeah um yeah so this is what we're trying to get you can also team up so if you were to team up with another uh player then you'd need a control total of five of these and these numbers yeah you can have like a two versus two or two v one even if um if all players agree to that if someone's doing too well then um you'll be okay you're really good at this sort of thing so okay uh so yeah i'll just explain so development phase is how we make these it's also how we make weapons which are um look like this yeah and still suits which is sort of what the freemen of june need to recycle their water and survive out in the deserts and these are sand worm teeth knives and these they're like caves where they can live like support themselves and that kind of things yeah little camps so these are the three main things that you'll be developing um most of them help you with moving around resources and combat which is the core of the game then we'll move into a production phase this is where all these resource places will potentially generate the resources that they've got there is a dice that will be rolled each phase and that will determine exactly which resources are produced and it's also a chance to gain yourself a sand worm companion however you do have to put out your thumper token which looks like this one ah you got it there yep yep so it looks like this and you'll have to set it to one of these two sides before you roll the dice and this if you're successful and you pick the right side you'll add another sand worm to your faction otherwise you might think sand worms probably sound like a bad thing but these freemen are actually using them to ride around on and riding them into combat so they've sort of trained trained the sam worms to be on their on their side yeah it sounds really cool yeah sometimes they don't dig into the sand and then disappear or eat you i mean i'm sure they've continued all that yeah they're experts telling you they're they're they're they're experts yeah if you do fail to get this you can actually upgrade so there is a constellation where you can upgrade the sound wave to a stronger side as well so if you don't get a produce once there is like a sort of fallback there yep next you'll have a chance to trade with your fellow um your fellow tribes um with the trade doesn't work exactly how you might think with most games where you can sort of trade whatever for whatever everything in this game is sort of pretty precise so in the trade action you can trade exactly one resource for one other resource with one other player and you do this in turn order so if you hopefully you can find someone to trade with or not trade with if you want and then it will go around in the circle and once everyone's done one successful trade or not that round will end might not happen when you die yes that's correct so when it's got these little circle icons on here we always roll the dice and these are various things sometimes the lead player will get to decide if the phase happens sometimes the face doesn't happen at all sometimes you have a vote between all the plays to see if the phase occurs there's a lot of negotiation in this game and you'll definitely see that when it comes to the attacking action as well yes next phase is shipment and which again we roll the dice and various things can happen um but with shipment is just how you can sort of transport your goods around the map so once you have some goods out here and let's say you have a um steel suit out here where's the whim oh yeah let's get the worm yeah mighty worm now let's just put a few more people out let's do that and this is double-sided yeah you've got male and female sides yeah it's cool and they all represent like a clan of these people in these locations so let's say um i want to get these two resources out from this zone and maybe we want to get them over to here you can choose one of your um so you don't actually move your troops in in your clans in these games they always stay in still but you move around your like assets so you got your worms and your steel suits and your knives so if you wanted to get these two resources to here you could pick them up with this and move them all together like that or this guy can even come as well so you can move one to another this is how many spaces you can move and you can potentially move through opposing clans territories however there's something called debt in this game which are represented by these little coins like this and i would need to have one water debt of that clan in order to go through there so i would give this back to him it's like if you destroy them in battle or yeah and you get it yeah so what a debts like um you owe that clan something and if i go and kill your clansmen you sort of they've you created a debt with that clan of some water the water of their people so um now now that he's killed me in the past and he's given me one of his debts i'm using that debt now to pass my resources through his territory yes you can also trade debts in the trade phase for resources as well with each other yes stated in here yep and if you have so many debts you can trade them in for resources too yeah um so shipments basically maneuver in resources because you've got to get them all into the same territory in order to create these various items especially the victory condition um stage basically you're trying to get all gather all the resources on your area so in the development phase then you can turn them into something nice yeah yeah yeah um actions really where the bulk of the decision making is going to be taking place um actions involve you either drawing from the scavenger deck which is this one here um gain a random useful thing for your clan or you can steal a resource from someone or you might get a special item from this uh pile here or change should dive roll change the dire role yeah they're just like little asset things and you can use these there's a trader board as well often um so on your first action you can either take one of these cards or you can attack a territory and on your second action you can either make another shipment action or you can attack a territory so you get two actions every turn um so let's say i wanted to attack here so let's just explain attacking this is the um this is the bulk of the game so if i want to attack here there's no dice rolling in combat so it's very deterministic so i would pick which territories i'm attacking from i'm just going to move this over here for the sake of this example and pick a territory that i'm tacking into so these two are going to attack into here um the defender gets to attack all the adjacent defensive zones that they have units in so let's just for the sake of example surround it like this so this defense would have one two three four defense in the deep wastes and i initially would have one two three attacks so these dark black circles are attack and i count all of my adjacent areas so at the moment my free attack is not going to defeat therefore defense wherever red can red needs to decide if he wants the side of the attacker or the defender if he decides with the defender obviously the defender is definitely going to win in that regards hope he decides the attacker the attacker will win because they're going to bring it up to five do they get this decisively so we can't actually bribe him we can't give him resources he just promises really or you know next trade faction i'll definitely trade with you or you know um but i can't physically give them anything so there's no negotiation in that sense in this game where you're freely trading assets between each other but there is like oh i owe you one kind of trading you know like oh you did me a favor there so later on i'll return the favor when you go to attack them i'll support you in that battle that kind of thing and obviously with those type of trades there's also backstabbing of course um so what do you expect whatever you expect right so this one as well you can still bring it yeah so i like for this game i recommend sort of almost role-playing and a beer yeah at the tribe so the tribes are kind of generic named you know green tribe gold tribe bring them bring them to life a bit yeah um try and hold up your promises or try and be that sneaky backstabby horrible person um you know try to bring some life into this uh because it is it is good you know it is that type of game yeah one more thing the attacker can do um which before this person decides if they're going to support them or not is they can bring one outside asset into the fight so if it's not adjacent it can come across bring in anything else in its territory so it might have a a knife sitting here as well and then they can bring this over into this territory to join the fight and this will add this much strength to that combat excellent and that's the bulk of the game there's also the council phase where players have a moment take a moment to reflect on the board's day discuss and something pretty unusual for these type of games is they can sort of decide whatever they want and make it a rule if they want so almost everyone in the game agrees you can change how many victory points are needed for victory for example um if you want to you know if two players want to align have an alliance everyone has to agree to that but they can do it you the one player might say okay you guys can be on alliance but you have to have seven places to win and they're like okay if they agree to that then now their new victory condition is they have to have seven the sky is the limit right yeah that's it and you can change whatever rule with the game you want the rulebook says you know you want to add dice rolls to combat go ahead you know every every combat now involves the device roll you can do that you can make it first to one victory point if you want you want to have a really really quick game and you can actually make these decisions prior to the game starting so the robot commands you know if you're playing with four you can set up as a 2v2 game so you both have an alliance each and there are rules for alliances in the rulebook in regards to passing through each other's territories and doing that kind of thing and yeah so it's it's really interesting um it's i think it works best at four um i think so yeah with the boards being crowded and not having one side for you one side for me type of thing yes and there's no scale down in and in here there's no blocking now there's more room for negotiation at even higher than three at four it really is the sweeter spot where it's there's a few more influences going on yeah yeah sort of tv one coming up all the time because if one person feels like they're sort of missing out then no no sort of rule changes are going to happen because everyone has to agree yes indeed so it is um oh by the way we've moved into the review part yes so that's basically that's how thank you for explaining that okay and yeah it's it's an interesting game so it's it's very when you hear the rules it's really what but then when you play it like oh yeah maybe when you do it like like a negotiation backstabbing or yeah it's i i like how unique it is i think um the combat is interesting the way that it's there's no dice rolling initially and yeah you can just you're just kind of making use of these map spots with the various surrounds you really got to think about how many spots you can get before attacking sort of a major settlement that someone might be having a large amount of defense and also because all your defense covers adjacent places you want to be placing your high value sort of resources in areas that are in the middle of your area so they defend as many off your spots as possible just like keep carrying your resources yeah but you also need them yeah you also need them to carry your resources around so if you're just sitting there doing nothing then you're not actually doing all the other stuff for the game so there's a nice balance between that it's a bit like scythe like you have to carry all things around as well a little bit um you play yeah you play scythe as well yeah it gets into like the crunchiness of it straight away over this one i guess so it's like throw it away yes everyone's all all the spots on the boards are taking it right up from the get-go so when we're putting out a people we put a cover to the whole maps covered and and you basically just say you have to attack basically on the first turn like this you want to attack you want to attack as much as possible it's very encouraged and it's quite often it's just like well i've got two strengths you've got one so attack happens that's it you actually gain resources from attacking so if you were to remove one of the troops you gain a water based on what water that person had on them and that person gets gains of water debt from you so they can sort of trade for your areas or stop it you can actually use water that to stop attacks from that player as well indeed it is because it's there's no dice throw in combat means that it could be could lead to ap as well when you strategize it leads again it leans on the number of players helps with that because there's more randomness based on the number of people influencing the fight so um if there's only two players in a fight then you sort of immediately know who's won who's lost you can count it up work it out yeah but as soon as there's someone else on that border he are you actually going to help me okay i believe you and yeah i think it's definitely it's good i would say that this game is for three to four players yeah i don't think it works for two um it's it's too great it might be but it's a different type of game it's very different yeah it's like best at three and four yes yeah you'd miss out on quite a bit of the juiciness of the rolls in there too there is there is a nice little battle between two sides but it's a bit stalematey at times and it can be very it can snowball if someone gets ahead or gets a good win somewhere and steals the other person's items then you know yeah if you're not risk you can decide on the council phase there's nothing you have to do it's like oh this person's going to win so yeah yeah and then work it out in one of our games it's actually two-player games it's a draw as well yeah it was a it was a bit of a stalemate where everyone had too many good defensive teams yeah yeah i was like oh i'm not moving i'm just like little corner here with good friends whoever strike struck first was gonna lose so yeah so yeah that's it bro yeah and you know i think that i gotta admit though that because the council phase where you negotiate of the game rules that still feel very different like you would think that is that because they want the game to evolve or they just worry that it's very it's very unique so it's i'm not sure about that yeah i'm i'm not sure if it entirely works because it requires a complete consensus from the whole table and if i was winning ahead in the game or if i felt that i was ahead in the game i probably don't want to change many rules and especially don't want to let the other two players line against me so unless they can really offer me something like they can lower how many i need to win or something it makes it easier for me to win i'm not going to agree to that particular rule change if i'm playing if i'm in that mindset i think there's two ways you can approach gamers like very much i want to win 100 do whatever it takes or it's like well ruin it there's a i'm sort of ahead in this game so let's let's throw a curveball in this game and make it keep the game fun yeah keep going going he became fun and the game sort of allows for either sort of eventuation like you know just oh yeah you know you guys can line up but you just need six to win and i'll allow it but you know yeah yeah yeah it's true yeah yeah it's kind of like that so just like plus and minus in that way and with the with the dice troll that's that's really okay let's just like to battle with dice roll that i don't like i got that card from the scavenge card that was sweet that i can change the yeah yeah pick which one you wanted yeah i am i think i'm reasonably lucky with dice i know or maybe maybe everyone else is just cursed at first and i'm average but everyone else is just terrible the other day taran was explaining a games like raw doing a how to play a game and then rolls the dice and it's like triple six like which is why i always lose audience anyone please tell me how do i get more lucky i did i'd like look okay okay like oh six yeah but that's like this eight seller four so this is like two i bet i bet you won't follow one yeah three two sir so no no i bet no wait i need a loan number see i need a high number oh i got that that's one somewhere someone says do you trust me trust me but yeah so you can have a group of people playing the game and then okay next time let's change the rules to these which we did as well and then that can be used as that but i i swear the first time i heard about the rules i found it really strange or maybe yeah when i was reading for the rule book it's just like oh this is really really different and i i kind of like i like the idea of games not just following uh tricky strict generic generic like this is the safe option i like that this game's gone well you know let's let's give this let's throw this in there and oh is it too long it's a negotiation yeah if it's going too long if this is just yeah there's a stalemate across the board then you guys can work out a way to resolve that or make a way to make it fun you know that's that's a good part of it um so i think it's it's got that it can have i think you have really funny moments where yeah every the whole table agrees with something maybe ridiculous just to get out of this situation and the tables found themselves yeah okay yeah it is yeah so they that is that sort of game it's not like it's serious but you know don't take it too seriously yeah i think i think that's that's right how it's meant to be played yeah if you take it too early then you just kind of start getting hurt by people backstabbing you and get you know holding too many grudges that kind of thing i think you just you just gotta go in there expecting um i think just i like to role play so i like just going to play play play a character be the trusting alliance this is everyone or play the person who's pretends to trust everyone but really has horrible plans for their close friends well this is why i'm doing this review with you because this is i feel like this is more your type of game i'm more on the gamer i can deal with the negotiation with that i think more than parent yeah yeah parents a little bit more like yeah just like just string rules follow you follow the rules very very proper so um yeah have you played anything like this have anyone at home play anything like this have you played the other dunes series now juniperium is very different that's by a different company and that is more euro game then yeah it's deck builder work replacement which is it's a great game i recommend i recommend it if you haven't tried it already yeah and it's also another june war game which i've only played once um but that's based on a very old design yeah yeah i play that we have a review as well for that one it's very streamed down quick wall game was that the the more the recent release one yeah okay i haven't i haven't tried okay there's two versions of that so this one is oh very old design it's very complicated and there's a streamlined version of that i see oh i know what you mean yeah yeah yeah okay yeah see more than us so let us know what you think if you have anything else by the way sorry no i think that's all um i just say um yeah it does compete with that have i doing game and i guess if you're looking for something with asymmetric factions and very very crescent moon it was just one that we played on here on dice yeah yeah um crescent moon is the most recent example of a game that plays like that june one that i've played where all the players have a special thing that they do yeah and it's like you're controlling the troops i'm in control of the trade that's more asymmetric though yeah very asymmetric that june game and it's more it's based on the whole current world of june rather than all the different factions rather than like a pre-pre-log to the books so there you go so have you played that let us know what you think and thank you for doing the review there are more coming i'm sure hopefully let us know as well if you want even henry to review a particular thing so maybe it would try right ahead yes yeah and thank you so much for watching everybody if you like us to do more of these type of videos please hit like button and comments and subscribe and hit the bell i'm also on instagram and henry can be found on instagram and underscore solo underscore board game find henry there too or here in bible university and hopefully we'll see you next time thanks for watching thanks yeah
