Autumn - Playthrough & Review

hi everyone my name is Monique and I'm navine from before you play and today we're going to be doing a two-player playthrough of a game called Autumn yes this game is designed by Maria and Enrique Blasco and published by d games it is Autumn time and the leaves are falling and this is a two-player only game where we are trying to have the largest contiguous area of our leaves of our color right so I believe this is a part of a season series Bo says uh Four Seasons on it and I have covered the Winter game which if you wanted to check that out that's going to be up here and now we have autumnn so we're assuming two more are coming our way yeah so the winter one was all about snowflakes we were building them and then melting them and here leaves will be falling and so today as usual we are going to just teach the game as we play it I think because it's a very very quick game and then we'll give our thoughts at the end so we'll include time stamps in the description below now we just ready to begin so if You' please direct your attention to the center of the table we're all set up here for a two-player game of autumn real simple setup yes and honestly also a very simple game yes so what we have here is a deck of cards I believe there are 18 including this one and they all just have variations of four squares of leaves and in this deck there are only two different colors of leaves there's the orange and the yellow and just so you know this is a one or two-player game so this does play solo so the first player is going to flip over the top card and I guess I'll just be the first player what do you think why not okay and then on your turn you're always going to place a card now when you when you place it you have to cover uh cards you can never tuck under and you have to cover at least one leaf up to two Max and that is honestly the entire game we're going to be going back and forth doing this and no rotating horizontal no rotating horizontal that is right you can go complete 180 but it always must be uh vertically placed so I'm just going to place this like this okay and now that naven is a second player before you draw your card nin gets to decide which color he wants to be okay uh I will be surprisingly light the yellow color you're gonna be yellow yeah I'm gonna go yellow oh all right should have positioned it differently I'm going to draw so uh basically I'm going to do this and then I'm going to do this I'm going to cover you up you're going down uh the goal of the game is at the very end once the cards are all run out you want to have the longest contiguous grouping of like type leaves right so we do calculate points at the very end you're going to uh identify the largest contiguous group and then it's one point per Leaf space and technically supposed to play this over the course of three games but I think today we're justes going to go sudden death what do you think simple one yeah just's a one one match winner stay home yes the winner stay home all right it is back to me you said you're yellow I'm yellow okay so I am the bright orange leav this is good looking I think let's just let's maybe try to go this way what do you think navine I don't like it so I'll do that I'm covering up two spes for leaves two of yours back to you yeah yeah no okay okay oh well there you go that's a nice that is card looking card plop that down right there wow H it is on okay still looks about tied right now so this is a 50/50 card I think I'm going to flip it around and do that all right back to you yeah yeah yeah okay oh oh I'm going to do that oh so these are two separate they are groups yeah but maybe now just maybe maybe oh no look that what are you going to do this is awful well seeing as both separate groups are about the same in size I think I'll just do this sure yeah all right gives you opportunity to cover it up later so I get it okay okay okay okay if I tuck this here that's not very good but if I tuck it here okay I'll go with that oh that's nice M we found our way to connect to all of it so good how do we disconnect this oh no it's just more of more yellow mine yeah that means more of yours are coming yeah it's true hm I've got to break in somehow I guess let's do that good spot yeah yeah and you broke up this little patch yeah so that was technically minus four I guess y instead of just two okay all right wow this is so much yellow oh no bring this in here that seems pretty good wow yeah let's do that so I'm only covering up one but I'm filling in the Gap here okay that's nice cuz you're making a nice thick column thick you can only cover two squares H that's okay I mean my problem is I'm not even connected anywhere time to make a connection all right well I think if I just go like this at least I can get something going this is looking real bad real bad all right well there you go that looks good for you but it's in your hand it is I could just cover up what you already have here it'll still gain me one burn well it'll gain you one oh it won't me anything it'll gain you one for this group but you only score your greatest group this seems like a good place to put that oh this is so bad that these all came out at the very end oh 5050 this stinks okay guess I'll go there yeah all right is a good one back to you right oh boy I you guess you still have your own I do have we tied 11 11 what are we going to do there's a tiebreaker we got to play another one yeah there's no tiebreaker because you're supposed to play three rounds and then you tally your score at the very end sure um but even then I still don't think this tiebreaker but shall we just play another one let's run it back one more more right why not okay we are reset this is a random card this might be the same card that we started with last time but it's just random I don't remember so we are going to switch uh I will be now first player so I will draw mhm I will place oh what do we do that's kind of nice yeah let's just do this there you go what do you want to be orange definitely you want to be orange okay all right you know I just want to things change it'll be easier to keep track of it I mean issue is your points are here in a square you can't you can't get there you know M you can't chip away at it so I guess I think the best thing is just to add the two leaves to my oh no that elongates yours it does I mean you can cover me up here add two to yours yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah there we go there okay okay it's done the whole we did all three games off the card so who do you want to score to 37 37 you win you did it we took it to three though you were the best strategic Leaf uh ferer planner of the game and we did it we took it to three so that is actually a full game that is how you're supposed to play it yeah yeah what are your thoughts oh yeah well I like winter a lot so um that one was uh a game that was played in two phases where you kind of building out the lattice and then as the winter melt happens then you're just trying to hang on for a dear life um like we said there is a playthrough of that that we have done so we do encourage you to check that one out if you like these kind of games um I like this one uh in terms of which one do I like better I think I like winter more because of the two-part aspect of the game um but I do I do enjoy this one I think it's it you can definitely find yourself feeling like I'm crushed I only have a four and then all of a sudden the cards kind of turn in your favor which we kind of demonstrated in this game um so it's been pretty balanced every single time we play yeah I totally agree with that I really really liked winter because of the things that you just mentioned so the fact that it's two-part uh makes it so that you're planning things in the first half of the game that will affect the things in the second half of the game so the Str Str is just a lot more interesting uh with winter this one is really interesting because of the way that it is just so simple it's it's a very simple deck of cards the way that you play it it's the simplest game I've ever played maybe right totally yeah um could be yeah abstract wise abstract wise yeah this one uh you could even fit this like on an airplane I think if you if you play it horizontally you can actually get this on on to a tray uh on your flights or something like that um so this is easy to carry the the box is super tiny just like the winter one um really is just a deck of 18 cards it's almost like a like a button shy type of game where you can get a lot of different strategy out of just 18 cards and I think that is the heart and soul of this game you know it shines for its Simplicity but because of the reasons that we mentioned I do uh enjoy winter more but I still like this one yep so there's two more apparently coming out we're assuming uh because it does say the Four Seasons collection on the box so uh we still have a spring and summer to come out in the future we don't know when those will be coming out but um hopefully we can get our hands on it when they do and then we can do some playthroughs well there you have it that
