Description

Welcome to Field Commander: Napoleon, the third in our series of Field Commander games. The goal in designing this game system was to make the careers of some of history’s great commanders accessible in an easy to learn, fast playing game format. We decided on solitaire, because it had the proper feel. Commanders have staff and advisors, but in the end, they alone make the hard decisions that affect lives, change the course of campaigns, and decide the fate of nations.

In this game, you make all the decisions needed to command your Forces. The game rules, charts, and die rolls dictate the actions of the opposing forces.

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Campaign play — The game features multiple campaigns from Napoleon's lifetime, each with different objectives and starting conditions.
  • Combat System — Battles are fought using battle plans, with a fog of war check that can grant bonuses. Units can take damage and are at half strength when flipped over.
  • Dice Rolling — A 10-sided die is used to generate random outcomes, such as enemy movement or battle checks.
  • reinforcements — The enemy has a set number of reinforcements that appear by a given date, usually kept off the board and appearing in a random location.
  • Resource Management — Players receive Supply tokens to purchase new troops or buy back lost troops, and these are also used to purchase battle plans.
  • scoring system — The game encourages playing for a score, with victory objectives that give higher scores the sooner they are accomplished. A sheet is provided to track scores for each campaign.
  • solitaire play — The game is designed as a solitaire game where the player takes the role of Marshall Napoleon fighting against the board.
