Description

Railroad Ink Challenge is the official adaptation of the critically acclaimed roll and write game created by award-winning designers Hjalmar Hach & Lorenzo Silva and illustrated by artist Marta Tranquilli.

In Railroad Ink Challenge, you have 7 rounds to make as many points as possible. Roll the dice and draw the routes to connect the exits around your board. Expand your network with railways, highways and stations to collect points, but you will be penalized for any open connections, so plan carefully! Play solo to improve your best score, or challenge players from all over the world!

HOW TO PLAY
Each round you will have to roll the dice and use the available routes to build your transportation network and connect as many exits as possible. Expand your network to collect points; you’ll also score bonus points for your longest highway and railway, for building into the central spaces of your map, and for completing optional, time-dependent goals before they expire.

You can also connect special structures to your network to trigger their special effects such as duplicating routes, unlocking powerful special routes, and more. But beware, try to not leave any open connections, as each one will cost you points at the end of the game.

EXPANSIONS
Forest, Desert and more expansions based on the physical board game are planned and will be coming soon as DLC in the months following release! These expansions add special dice and rules to create even more intricate landscapes for your highways and railways.

MODES
Play solo with random objectives and join the online rankings, or challenge players from all over the world with custom game configurations! The online leaderboards (Daily, Monthly, and All-Time) are completely cross-platform!

- The wonderful art of the roll and write game by Marta Tranquilli, fleshed out and digitally enhanced
- Network planning gameplay, try to make the best use of the available routes each round to create the perfect transportation network
- Try to conquer the top of the online leaderboards (Daily, Monthly, and All-Time)!
- Cross-platform, asynchronous multiplayer challenges with your friends!

Pros
  • Clear, step-by-step instructional flow appropriate for new players
  • Demonstrates core setup, round progression, and scoring mechanics with concrete examples
  • Explicitly notes expansion content and where to access additional tutorials
Cons
  • As a tutorial, it may not cover every obscure edge-case; players may need to consult the separate expansion video for full rules coverage
  • Some specifics about official publication details (publisher/designer/year) are not provided in the transcript
Thematic elements
  • Infrastructure planning, routing optimization, and competitive scoring through efficient connectivity.
  • Fictional, contemporary-to-near-future setting where players design and optimize a combined rail and road network across modular boards.
  • Procedural, tutorial-driven presentation focused on explaining rules and setup with practical demonstrations.
Comparison games
none
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Building-specific scoring and bonuses — Villages yield points for complete sets; universities unlock a bonus via crossings; factories offer duplication advantages.
  • Buildings and their scoring bubbles — Villages, Universities, and Factories appear on the board; villagers require junctions to score, universities cross off dice faces to unlock bonuses, and factories enable dice duplication.
  • Center-area bonuses — The nine center spaces are lighter in color and grant points if filled, contributing to the final score alongside other scoring categories.
  • Compound Scoring — Villages yield points for complete sets; universities unlock a bonus via crossings; factories offer duplication advantages.
  • Cross-off tracking — Round numbers are written in the top-right of each box to track progression and prevent retroactive changes from earlier rounds.
  • Edge handling and entry rules — Routes cannot begin from blanks or empty edges, and edges can be used later if connected from a matching pre-existing route.
  • Factories and duplication — Placing a dye face in a factory allows duplicating one of the dice used that round, increasing flexibility for future placements.
  • Junctions and connections — Villages score when a route with a junction connects highways and railroads; junctions serve as key points for scoring and strategy.
  • Limited Points — Any route that ends in the middle of the board without a continuation scores negative points; edges are treated specially for counting incomplete routes.
  • Mini expansions note — The base game references optional mini expansions that can alter scoring or add new elements; a separate tutorial covers these expansions.
  • Network/Route Building — Routes must stem from an existing route of the same type; non-matching connections (e.g., a railroad from a highway) are illegal.
  • Penalty for incomplete routes — Any route that ends in the middle of the board without a continuation scores negative points; edges are treated specially for counting incomplete routes.
  • Roll-and-draw route drafting — Each round the four route dice are rolled and players draw routes on their board that originate from a matching type on the die.
  • Round-based scoring and end-of-game tally — Scores are calculated by counting connected exits, longest highway, longest railway, central-area bonuses, completed villages/universities/factories, and penalties for incomplete routes.
  • Route type matching — Routes must stem from an existing route of the same type; non-matching connections (e.g., a railroad from a highway) are illegal.
  • special routes — There are six special routes, usable a maximum of three times per game; at most one special route can be used per round, and they are crossed off when used.
