Quotes (from this video)
  • I don't feel any pressure to create content.
  • This is my full-time job, right? I don't have another job to go to.
  • I'm producing all of this content and honestly, if I could produce more, I would because I love what I do.
  • The category here or the criteria here is massively popular, really well-respected, solid Euro games that have been around for a while and stood the test of time and are known as just really, really good games.
  • No games do. It doesn't need all of the bling and everything else.
  • I think most people in life are affected by what's called seasonally adjusted disorder.
  • Entering is absolutely free. It doesn't cost you anything whatsoever.
  • The secret word this month is haggis.
  • All of my advertising revenue from all of my videos goes to charity.
  • I don't make any money out of the videos themselves on YouTube. People call me crazy. They would be right.
  • It's only 70 to go.
  • I have not. No. Not Not even heard of that one.
  • I would strongly recommend you just do it because you want to do it. Don't go out and spend £4,000 on a fancy camera, lights, and everything else and think 'Right, I'm going to be the next big channel and I'm going to get 50,000 subscribers in 6 months.'
  • One thing that really annoys me is when the games come out at retail like the same time or even before and they're cheaper.
  • I personally believe it is fundamentally, morally, and ethically wrong for me to sell a pre-production prototype copy of a game.
  • It's International Unplayed Games Day. And the date that I've chosen... is the 1st of July.
  • I have already got two of them on my channel, if not three, and I'm doing another one next Wednesday.

Quotes (from this video)
  • They ended really strong in book three. It was a good ending of sorts and I really liked it.
  • I don't care about it.
  • They have multiple multiple uh points of view which I was fine following the one person.
  • I just found it to be maybe the last book will bring everything back together, but I doubt it. I just don't care anymore.
  • Look, I'm okay with characters dying and things that you need that to progress a story sometimes, but good grief. Does it have to be that bad all the time?
  • The mobs are out there and the mobs are going to hunt you down and no matter what you say.
  • It has definitely become a witch hunt in many ways where people like as soon as they hear the word the letters AI, they're like, 'I'm out.'
  • I think the backlash is and people going and rating games one on BoardGameGeek is kind of ridiculous.
  • That has nothing to do with the game. It really doesn't. That's that's just nonsensical.
  • I'm kind of mind-boggled with how much people complain about prices of games.
  • Yes, games are expensive. They're really expensive to make.
  • You don't go yell at your gas station attendant, you shouldn't when gas goes up. That's not them who are doing it.
  • It should be a friendly place to go to.
  • I always try to put some monkeys in my zoo, period. Just so I can say I have some monkeys.
  • I dislike the cat character a lot and I found it to be okay.
  • But I will warn you, I noticed that a lot of people when they do this, they also forget about the part where they you should make money.
  • Wash it in the shower?
  • If I ran BoardGameGeek, if I saw someone rate a one with a comment of 'I hate what they did here.' I would just delete that rating instantly.
  • I think are you kidding me? This is so nonsensical.
  • I love going to bookstores.
  • Any place that has unique interesting thing, a hot sauce store, a a beef jerky store, whatever.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Insane. Insane in the best way possible.
  • This is a literal 3D board where you will place tiles right here and move around little corridors here
  • Look at that alien right there in the corridor. I mean, it's already scary, just the board itself
  • Way back when, 3D printers were not as accessible as you think.
  • What I really like about people when they're coming up with upgrades for games is how innovative and funny they can be.
  • All it's missing is like voice over AI talking, 'Please select your deck.'
  • I think I would upgrade it to bring the game from 10 to 11.
  • The pieces are giant. Look, that's a real human hand right there on a giant meeple.

Quotes (from this video)
  • for a year we had to try and pronounce this until somebody announced that they were going to call it Mysterium
  • This game made such a splash. Like I forgot that people for a year were importing copies of it because it was so different.
  • It's actually pronounced Schüttel's. Like shirtless with an uh with that little uh Is that called an umlaut? Yeah. The the the little uh The the dots over the Yeah, the dots over the U. Yeah, but I'm still going to call it Schüttel's.
  • You're rolling uh little gnomes out of a cup. You're trying to roll a Schüttel out of a cup.
  • It's like basically a stock market game and depending on how many of the pawns you roll out of the cup, like that's number active.
  • This one is really interesting in that it is nothing like the game it's based off of.
  • This is Flamecraft Duels. I honestly wish they probably wouldn't have called it Flamecraft, maybe like Flame Duels or something like that would make more sense to me um because I don't think this one is anything like a two-player version of Flamecraft. This is a straight abstract game.
  • It's got really great PVC cards with some crazy like metal clasp on it. Like the whole thing is overproduced, but it may it just brings to the uh it brings so much to the occasion when you're playing this game.
  • It's a really cool abstract game with really cool puzzlingness and thinkingness uh connected with this just top-notch production.
  • Is Transformers higher or lower than Wedding Crashers?
  • The Bonfire of the Vanities from 1990. A hard-drinking journalist in ignites a scandal in New York City by reporting on a hit-and-run perpetrated by a Wall Street fat cat and his mistress.
  • Is Baby Geniuses higher or lower than The Bonfire of the Vanities?
  • Alien versus Captain America: The First Avenger. I mean, I know who'd win in a fight, but it's cuz Cap is undefeated.
  • So, this We're going to do three in a row.
  • I think that there is an unfair bias against Nick Cage.
  • National Treasure was 46. Oh. And then Twilight was 49.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I love Spirit Island. One of my top games of all time. Amazing design, but it's a game that will often have a boring ending...
  • if you make your game fun enough, like it's just a blast to play, you can forgive a lot.
  • Pandemic has a lot of problems with this. Alpha player will creep in.
  • I do think some games like you can design against alpha player without like totally hiding everything.
  • The biggest one is like the more your game is a puzzle and there are sudden must-win like moves that need to be made.
  • The only way the only reason it was uh beneficial was because of the asymmetry. If we both could do the same thing, it would just be kind of annoying to sit there and have a discussion on strategy past, you know, a couple minutes.
  • I love the idea that this is a new starting point. We're going to be going they yes yes they want me to keep buying more stuff but we're going to go through what seasons essentially
  • I mean Arkham is my favorite Arkham is my favorite game that I tell people not to buy.

  • I spent the last 20 years saying that Talisman is one of the worst games ever designed.
  • The thematic connection of that ability doesn't mean mean anything to me because it was the guy in episode 14 of season 3.
  • So much theme in every single one of the lines of text.
  • It is an utterly fantastic game. I love it.
  • And it was the most tense and epic game that I've ever had with War of the Ring.
  • The dark forces need 10 points to win, and the free peoples either destroy the ring or they get four points.
  • The base game alone is still an utterly fantastic game.
  • It's completely random.
  • It's a very highly asymmetric game and it's you know, the the way you learn it is here's a rulebook each and you also get your own faction rulebook. You need to read it.

Quotes (from this video)
  • Secret Hitler to me is essentially social deduction at its most baby. It's a baby game.
  • I absolutely detest it. I think it's one of the most uh maybe the sin of our uh decade. You know, the 2020s is a decade of FOMO.
  • Yeah. I hate the fact that we're that we're uh essentially manipulated into giving an interestfree loan and build as somehow saving money or getting the thing that nobody will ever be able to get. All of it feels bad.
  • Zombicide to me is flavorless. like the core game is essentially like the most generic unimagin uh uninteresting kind of gameplay and then you stack things on until uh it appeals to you by some uh crossmarket appeal like you know I think there's a DC or a Marvel zombicide I can't remember which one now there's you know zombicide uh white death or white plague or something like that and you just keep stacking things on until you find something you like and then the person's like oh I like Danny Tjo let me buy Jasicide so I can play as Danny Treyo. And I'm like, it's it's just functionless or formless. There's no interest in mechanics behind it. It's just like here's product after product after product and it's like Funko Pops. It's like you're collecting Funko Pops with your goddamn board games. I'm like, I don't want to collect any more Funko Pops for this [ ] board game, you know? Like that's how I feel.
  • Earth to me is like the ultimate ultimate feelgood game. Like you are going to find success in Earth no matter what you do.
  • Um, and to me, uh, the feeling of progress without any kind of uh counterbalance to any kind of like feeling of uh impediments, it's ultimately hollow. It feels like there's no actual thought being put into my actions as much as there is just actions being taken for the sake of an action being taken to hit my little dopamine in my head and then I walk away feeling like, "Oh, I did something with my little [ ] Sahara Desert and I put [ ] bamboo leaves in here and now I feel good because I have this environment." There's it's it's just literally it's numbers in a spreadsheet that you're just playing with until you get an output that makes you feel good. And to me, that's not really an enjoyable experience.
  • >> Phil Uckland is a [ ] idiot for some of his uh political beliefs and you know his anti- u uh uh uh climate change uh positions that man-made climate change isn't uh real I believe and also his essay on uh British imperialism that was in the first PAX uh premiere if I remember correctly. Uh those are [ ] idiotic things to say uh and I disagree with them vehemently. Um, but he's a [ ] genius when it comes to game design. Like he might be like one of the greatest minds of game design of our time.
  • I I think the the thing is like I care more about people thinking about like the process of religion being created. That's what I care about. I don't care about what the end result is necessarily. Like I don't care about like the the the morality of religious doctrine. I care about how it's been implemented and created and used as a tool. You know, that's what I care about.
  • It is. It's the Wikipedia of board games
  • You can't be afraid to like say something that's going to make people mad.
  • It's not going to be a game that you're going to be able to play with your grandpa and your like, you know, your whole family around the table after a nice Christmas dinner.
  • I I don't want to collect any more Funko Pops for this board game.
  • I I feel like those ones are like kind of like they're indicators of quality again, you know, like I'm like when I see an AI thumbnail, I'm like I I get like a little icky, you know?
  • I I think thumbnails are like an art of itself and I'm trying to perfect it.

  • this last year has not been defined by playing a lot of new games this last year has been defined by playing a ton of Classics
  • this is my top 10 list from 2024 but it's a little bit of a weird collection cuz this is technically the 10 games that I regret not playing or the 10 games I wish I got to the table the 10 games that arrived that I was and have been for a long time so excited about
  • the unique thing about being a content creator about working in this board game Space is that we are always playing previewing and prepping content on games that still haven't arrived
  • I would argue that most of these games probably at least six or seven of these games would be on my official top 10 list of 2024 if I had only gotten them to the table in the first place
  • so slay the Spire is coming to the channel very very soon it is still one of the 10 games I desperately want to obsess over
  • it's kind of remarkable that this isn't even opened I haven't done a unboxing video I haven't showcased it on the channel
  • seon has this problem of delivering too much stuff and stuff that doesn't necessarily easily find its way into an organizational pattern
  • this is one of like six or seven boxes for Simon's uh Marvel uh United
  • flip 7 though is one of the games that West Todd one of my close friends uh told me was remarkable he asked me if ID tried it yet I said I hadn't and he said man it's one of the best games of the year you have to try it
  • dark Venture Battle of the agents is one of the most unique uh well-designed indie games I have ever played
  • vagor song is this beautiful maob over the Garden Wall feeling campaign game
  • we're getting structured scheduled we're getting a consistent thematic posting schedule going
  • this group of 10 this group of 10 is or are my top games from 2024 whether or not I actually played them in 2024
  • don't beat yourself up just cuz life is messy and you didn't get every game you hop to get to the table or every project you intended on getting done
  • a new year is in some ways an arbitrary line in the calendar that people put to indicate they either suc succeeded or failed and in other ways it's a fresh opportunity a chance to start a new

  • Are phones a cardinal sin? Is a digital thing intruding upon our physical space an unforgivable fault?
  • At what point for you do the expansions, upgrades, deluxeifications, big box editions when does it become so much game you don't find yourself actually pulling it out to play?
  • I would rather see, instead of a big box for something like Root to come out... I want to see the trend of big boxes, I want to see it die down a little bit.

  • The library to me is never the coolest place in town. It's a It's very rarely the crowdest place in town, but it's a place where people come to learn something to ignite the passion for something.
  • My only hope was to to find this uh to get this job at this local representative from London in London from the same company I used to work. And uh yeah and frankly the main reason I also went to London because I had a couple of friends who were very who were just very kind to me and saying you can stay here with us as long as you need to and that's basically was the only place I could ever go without money or anything.
  • I realized that even though I love all this nerdy productivity stuff, I'm just truly not really an expert in that.
  • And I think it was my wife because she she've been like keep telling me in the background this whole time like dude you're such a nerd. you should do some gaming stuff because you've been playing the whole life and you can talk about games for hours.
  • I would rather try doing that than going into the usual top 10 listicles and you know all the hottest latest stuff. It just resonate with me much more partly because I've been doing a lot of self-reflection and wanted wanted to do something I could do long term.
  • The fact that you're saying that you're happy doing that you can tell it's one of the things that uh sometimes whenever you know creators you know it's a hard balance whenever you want to make content as you said to feed the algorithm to make you know some videos and but I think like judging you know if you watched a couple of videos from the same person most of the time you can tell whether they're having a blast whether it's genuine experience for them and or not at least that that's kind of my take on it.
  • It is not. [laughter]
  • Elder Scrolls has the best character customization we have in a board game. Full stop.
  • The only reason I haven't done the video about it yet, believe it or not, is because I think I don't know the platform well enough to make a sort of video about this.

  • Like I just I remember thinking if we could play this a lot more, I think we would really like plumb the depths of what what makes this game so special.
  • Like it you should know it so well.
  • Um and I think it's either got to be lots of cards to explore or something kind of yeah with that classic feel.
  • Like that's one that has the depth there that if I was enjoying it, I probably could just get really into Through the Ages.
  • But if I could just like have a group where oh yeah, I'm playing Twilight Imperium once a month. I know the rules. I don't have to refresh and I'm just like playing the same faction for a bit then I'm trying a different one.
  • Like I don't know if there's really an answer. I more so I just want to get your thoughts on it.
  • So, I think it has done two things for me. One is that it has made me sort of upset that I didn't start like branching out sooner.
  • But at the same time it's given me the perspective to see the level of depth that games can have competitive to what it what you get on that first impression.
  • Gloomhaven is really the only board game that I have played consistently for a long period of time with the same people or same person or whatever um at a table, right?
  • It's like a lesson in you can't have your cake and eat it, too.
  • Like you kind of have to pick your lane and just commit to it at different points in your life. Otherwise, you're going to feel like you're not fully experiencing either lane to its fullest, you know?
  • I've had games that I've thought at times like this could be a lifestyle game, so I'm not going to play it yet because if I do, I'm going to get so into it that it's going to prevent me from getting to those other games that are should be a higher priority for me right now.

  • Unlike other rankings that I know and love, like on BoardGameGeek, the hotness, um the hotness is kind of dominated by games that are coming out in the future, rather than games that are already that people are actively already playing.
  • I wanted a power ranking hotness-style list about games that we've already played, and now that we've played them, we want to play them again.
  • The bottom three get knocked off, and next month they will be replaced by Terraforming Mars, Sanctuary, and Dune Imperium.
  • I think that is really clever. I kind of want to see more games with this discovered asymmetry that impacts all players during the game.
  • This is the number two game that people have played that they want to play again.
  • A real classic game here that has been given a little bit of new life thanks to I think the special edition, which is really stunning.
  • I think these are games that people play. Like, people aren't I don't think everyone is playing Galactic Cruise every night. And even if you are, you're probably mixing in a lighter game every now and then. And those games I think are relevant are are relevant, too.
