Description

There is always something happening in the lively market square of Quedlinburg. And two quack doctors are at the very heart of it all, attracting the crowds with their most enticing hyperbole and fanfare. The game involves maximum concentration on both sides, as every move will directly affect your opponent. The aim is to try and lure any undecided patients to your market stall, because every patient you treat here will strengthen your reputation in the quacks’ Guild Hall. So which one of you will be the next Guild Master of the Quacks of Quedlinburg?

Quotes (from this video)
  • Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization is the engine builder to end all engine builders.
  • In Twilight Struggle, one of the more interesting times in history is played out. And I love that each card is a real event that happened.
  • Gaia Project built on Terrammystica and perfected the form. It's the best one.
  • Gloom Haven: Jaws of the Lion has the best tutorial system I have ever seen in a game, and I think it legitimately creates new board gamers constantly because of the way they make it so approachable.
  • Each Spirit in Spirit Island can be played over and over as you learn how to master their abilities, and there are so much content in the box. It also just plays amazing solo.
  • Dune Imperium Uprising took Dune Imperium to a whole new level of scale and scope, and it's got them worms.
  • It's impossible to have a bad time playing Star Wars Rebellion, especially if you love Star Wars. Okay, mostly only if you love Star Wars, but it's really fun. It's Lord of the Rings in a box, and it's perfect.
  • For a solid like 6 years, Terraforming Mars was absolutely the king of the board game hobby. Unreal staying power.
  • Dune Imperium uses art based on the movies, but it doesn't feel at all like a movie tie-in cash grab.
  • The scale and epic stories that come out of Twilight Imperium fourth edition make it everlasting. Every time you play, you get a permanent memory and story. It's truly impressive.
  • The sheer amount of content in Gloom Haven and the card play makes this dungeon crawler a Eurogamer's delight.
  • Ark Nova takes Terraforming Mars' cardplay in Civilization's action card mechanisms and put it into a theme we're just way more interested in. just the absolute pinnacle of mashing up mechanisms into a masterpiece.
  • Pandemic Legacy Season 1 has deserved every single ounce of acclaim and accolades it's received over the years. It was an absolute phenomena when it came out.
  • I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't want to say anything nice about this game. I don't like this game though.
  • Fine. Fine.
  • Brass Birmingham is objectively a board game. Done. Easy. That was nice. Words that are written.
  • Brass rhymes with ass. Got him. You're done.
  • Brass Birmingham has one of the best examples of positive player interaction and a game I'd actually seek out to play for a player. Was that so hard?
  • So, that was one nice thing about every single game in the Board Game Geek top 100. Many games that we actually don't even really like, but there's always something nice to say. Exactly.
  • Just engage.
  • We had a lot of fun making it.

  • The rule books for those games which were co-written by Vlarger and Jason. Uh those are really really good rule books. very very well written, absolutely perfect in terms of teaching you the game. Zero questions afterwards.
  • Well, Mage Knight, but only just Mage Knight is my number one favorite game of all time.
  • Elder Scrolls is very likely in my top 10 or top 20, but yeah. Um, it depends how much time I've got. If I had 12, 14 hours free, I'd play Elder Scrolls. If I had four or five hours free, I'd play Mage Knight.
  • Okay. Well, let's say Voidfall because the last two times that I've played Voidfall, I have specifically said I don't want to play this with people who haven't played before.
  • It's a great game. It's from QuinnD Games. They always do really good games and I'm doing a giveaway and it's not had many entries.

Quotes (from this video)
  • So I'll start with my least favorite and work my way up to the best of them.
  • Definitely a good framework of a good game here.
  • So quicks get nothing to write home about. I think maybe it's been lost to the animals of time.
  • But the premise itself is boiled down to those simple mini games which I must admit we have seen time and time again in different role rights. This one just seems to cobble them together.
  • My my only issue is the the time investment side of things.
  • So, if you are familiar with games like um Tawanaku, this one feels very similar to me, but certainly um way more rich and way more um thematic in the way that everything is put together.
  • But this game has this magical ingredient where it's just so addictive and you just want to keep playing it again and again and again.
  • So, that is Jungo, and I'll give that one a seven out of 10.

  • That is Food Chain Magnet.
  • No ducks, false advertising.

  • Watching paint dry or play this game about watching paint dry. Tough decision.
  • I love this one. I'm here to berate the designer of the game. I haven't even played the game, and it's already driving me to tears and make me want to flip the table. Who designed the pieces? Who? Zero stars for that junk.
  • This is like Sudoku, but worse and colorful.

  • A game can top every ranking, win every award, sell out every print run, and still sit on your table and leave you completely cold.
  • A game being widely loved does not mean it was built for you.
  • Your table is not our table.
  • If we are hard on a game you adore, that is a data point about us, not a verdict on you.
  • Race for the Galaxy instead.
  • It delivers the same engine-building tableau satisfaction, the same thematic richness of building a galactic civilization card by card in under 45 minutes.

  • My mission has just been that board games are for everybody, right?
  • There's the violence that does happen doesn't happen on screen.
  • So, um, at least for my first book for Player Elimination, the part of the stakes is that um, Ren's business isn't doing so hot and she's worried that her business is going to close, right?
  • I did have multiple agents tell me off the bat that Ren was not a good protagonist because she has a disability.
  • Like, that in a cozy in a cozy in particular, you know, like kind of in a romance, it's kind of like the romance of of mystery genre in the sense of like, you know, at the end it's going to be okay.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I did not love this one. I I drastically prefer Hey, That's My Fish.
  • This felt like a less fun version of Hey, That's My Fish.
  • I thought the game was very dry.
  • This was very charming. I I like what the game was doing as far as the real-time speed nature of trying not to be the last one holding the bag when everything goes bust, while also trying to collect sets of cards through real-time live trading. This was very fun.
  • I was very impressed by how well the game is designed. Uh ultimately it was it was fine to play a few times and then move on from it.
  • This was very solid uh going along with Triangulation and Decrypto. It's another one of those clue intercepting games, uh, but done very differently.
  • Biggest complaint I have against it is I'm just keeping too many of these games and I can't have all these small box games be everything.
  • It's cute. It's fast. It's thematic. I've enjoyed this one, but this kind of real-time game is just not overall my jam.
  • Basically, it's a fun charming game. I'm just not overly uh enthused by it.
  • Vestige is a great game. I think I just prefer Vindication.
  • Vindication will almost always get picked over Vestige each time.

Highly Recommended
Pros
  • Pure push-your-luck fun
  • Simple, effective tension
  • Great for mixed groups (new and experienced players)
  • High table energy and shared reactions
  • Accessible with a good rules-to-fun ratio
  • Fast rounds keep the game moving

  • Can feel chaotic
  • Relies heavily on luck
  • Potential for player elimination or significant setbacks if a brew explodes
Thematic elements
  • Making potions by pulling chips from a bag
  • Fantasy potion brewing
Comparison games
none
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Bag Building — Players draw chips from a bag to make potions, improving probabilities by buying ingredients with different powers over time.

Quotes (from this video)
  • That's what we're covering today. And we've got a great spread, too. Some of these are tense strategy games, some are chaotic and cinematic, some are cooperative, some are mean, and one of them is basically four people daring each other to ruin their own potion.
  • It's a political economic simulation about social classes, public systems, labor, capital, and the state.
  • Which is exactly why four players is essential here. This is one of the clearest examples on the list of a design that is most itself at four.
  • At four, every policy has a face. Every economic shift has a stakeholder. Every argument at the table suddenly has substance because the people affected are literally sitting there saying, 'Well, this is great for you, but it wrecks my entire round.'
  • The Quacks of Quedlinburg, which is pure push-your-luck joy.
  • In our experience, it is one of the all-time best examples of simple tension done right, because the entire experience is built around a question everybody understands instantly. Do I stop now, or do I pull one more?
  • Four is perfect, because this kind of game thrives on shared reaction.
  • So, if your group wants something interactive, accessible, and wonderfully dramatic without a huge rules burden, we think Quacks at four is an easy recommendation. It's loud in the best possible way.

Quotes (from this video)
  • These are going to be the top five components that make a game experience better.
  • The organizational roll mat, and this one does it particularly well.
  • Some dice I would say that are too big is the Die from Rolling Realms.
  • The game that totally rocks with dice is made up entirely of dice.
  • Dice can really make the game fun. Dice can make the game clear and easier to understand, um or they can essentially get in the way.
  • These cards are gorgeous.
  • These cards are just stunning. They're stunning. They're well designed. They feel good.
  • So, my number two are dual layered player boards.
  • This is crucial to experiencing and enjoying Terraforming Mars, for example, or any game that has this kind of feature.
  • My runner-up for components that makes a game play better is having great organizational inserts and/or cubbies or boxes inside of your game.
  • So, for me, the Kinfire Delve card decks are 100% my high-water mark for card quality, design, really cool features that have some of those raised features, and some of them have the gold foil.
  • My number one is all about the feel of something and having something that lasts longer than cardboard.
  • So, the original game is good. But because this game is all about drawing components and having bits in your hand and having them rub up against each other in a sack while you shake your sack around cuz you want to get all everything all mixed up together really well. You've got these bits, but honestly, if you're going to play over and over and over again the way that we play, you want to get these bits.
  • So, having the upgraded bits in Quacks is going to uh preserve your game. It's going to preserve the components because you are manhandling those elements, those ingredients, all the time and again.
  • Makes the game better, makes the game feel better, but also makes the game last longer.

Quotes (from this video)
  • But even when I played for the first time, it does not mean anything until you score a goal.
  • It's very easy to grok that you want to put your goals out first and then get the resources, but it's so hard to implement until you played it a couple of times.
  • I really enjoy this game. I like teaching it because it's one of those lighter strategy games that really get people into the mindset or into trying heavier strategy games.
  • And it is so much fun to just watch people act like they don't care initially about whatever green team. And then like when they're winning like I have I have 17 points.
  • I like teaching heavy games when it's very logical.
  • The fun thing about Settlers is that you only are teaching kind of like 70% of the game because when the aliens come out, they have their own set of rules, and you cannot teach them until they actually show up.
  • But if you're a hobbyist it's like this like when can we play this again? It's It is so my wheelhouse. It's not even funny.
  • And it doesn't outstay its welcome. It's really pretty at the table.
