ICE - Tutorial & Playthrough
Transcript
welcome to the drunkett's games tutorial for ice in this video i'll be teaching you the rules to the game as it's being played and i will be showing more than one half of a game today now i do want to ask that if you enjoy this video that you please click the like button for it down below as well as the subscribe button for the channel in addition to that if you'd like to directly support the channel in the creation of videos like this one in the future then please go to johngetsgames.com support there you'll find a bunch of ways that you can really help things out and some of those come with benefits like watching some videos early and advertisement free as well as voting on which of those videos are made alright let's now jump into the game out here we have the game fully set up and ready to play for our three different players before i start i would like to ask that you please turn on the klingon subtitles i might make mistakes as i'm showing you the game and those will let me put corrections on the screen where you should be able to see them and i will also put corrections below this video in a pin to comment the next thing i'd like to point out is the fact that i'm filming with a prototype version of the game today so the r to n components that you see here will not necessarily match those that will be in the final version of the game well let's start things off with a brief overview of the game in the middle of the table we have a hexagonal grid of tiles and there is more to this than meets the eye because underneath this grid there is another grid of hexagonal tiles and underneath that one there is another in fact there are five layers of hexagonal tiles out here on this board now in this game each player is in control of a guild that is excavating out here on these frozen icy wastes and the reason we are doing that is because we all believe there are ancient ruins underneath the
ice of a long gone advanced civilization now as we go through the game we are going to excavate these ice tiles from the top and each of these tiles has an action printed on the back that we can then use to do whatever it says later on in the game below the ice sheet we will start to find artifacts and we will continue to find artifacts as we dig deeper and deeper and we can utilize those artifacts to gain special effects once we have enough of them on our guild board in addition to that we can remove the artifacts that we have gained in order to activate various request cards that will then give us victory points at the end of the game depending on the condition that is printed on that specific card so we want to gain the artifacts to get special abilities we want to use those artifacts to gain extra points at the end of the game and all along we are going to be moving our expedition leader around utilizing the archaeologists on the map to excavate deeper and deeper into this valley now players will continue to play the game until we have performed eight full days or until we have fully uncovered a ancient city tile down at the bottom of this valley at that point we will gain victory points for the request cards that we have been able to activate and we will also potentially gain victory points for meeting the various face-up decrees that are dealt out at the start of the game and we will only see these three in this game although there is a deck of other ones that we could have seen that we randomly drew these from in order to set up the game now i will describe the details of how all of this works while we are playing the game and on that note i think let's start the game off now we are going to play as the enlightened purple player down here and it's worth noting that when you play ice you can use asymmetric
abilities that are specific to each of these guilds or you can play without them and for today's tutorial we are not going to be using any of those asymmetries so for us the enlightened guild will work the same exact way as the cryoarchitects as well as the incandescents up there at the top now we are going to be the starting player because we have the first player token so let's now begin the first round off the first thing that we have to do is reveal the top event card from this stack and you will always have a rival as the first event and in fact i've already performed this effect it says we have to place one archaeologist maple onto each of the tunnel tiles and place an encampment onto the camp tile out here on the board these are archaeologists and those are tunnels so that's why we have each of these spots with one of them and there is already a camp tile out there on the board after we have finished this event all players are going to gain five action points and they could potentially gain more based off of other conditions which i'll discuss later each player can track their action points by moving this pawn and we can move that to the five spot on this track to show that we have five actions that we can use over the course of this first day of the game of course our green and orange opponents will do the same and now we can take the first turn of the day again because we have the first player marker in front of us now on a player's turn they can spend up to three of their action points and again we have five at the moment so we could use three of these now and then play will continue to the next person in clockwise order once everyone has taken the turn we will continue back to us and our next turn if we spend three actions on our first
turn we would then have two more to spend on the next turn of the game now we obviously have five to spend right now and there are a variety of ways we can use these action points and we can do different types of things as long as we don't spend more than three action points total within a given turn at this point in the game we have five different things that we could do that would spend some actions in order to help us out and the first of those that we are going to do is build a campsite we can only do that because we have a camp token on our board if this was not there then that action would not be available to us so we are going to build this campsite and that action always costs one action point so we can move this token down to the four spot to show that we used one and now we can place this on the board and whenever we build a campsite we will always move our expedition leader from wherever they are onto that new campsite so let's look out to the board and as you can see there is one campsite out here already and it is worth noting that each of these campsites are neutral they are not associated with any one given player we are going to place this out with our expedition leader but then the leader will probably water off and do some other things now when we place campsites down they have to be no closer than three hex tiles away from a previous campsite and i think i want to place this here as you can see that is one two three spaces away from that campsite there now after that we can place our expedition leader onto that campsite and that has finished this build to campsite action at this point we have four actions left for this day and we can spend up to two more on this specific turn i think the next thing that we want to do is going to be
explore and whenever we explore we are going to move our expedition leader onto an adjacent spot now whenever the expedition leader moves they can bring up to three of these neutral archaeologists with them that means if this archaeologist happened to be there and we moved this expedition leader we could do that bringing that archaeologist with us now obviously that archaeologist is not with us at this point and now when we explore we are always going to spend one action point to move on to an adjacent tile that is touching the tile that our expedition leader is currently on now i do want to point out that on the ice sheet at the top of the board many of these tiles have a fault crack on them and this is impassable terrain on those specific angles that means we could not move on to this spot because this tile says that these are impassable so if we want to enter this tile at some point we will have to spend extra action points to go around that fault i don't think we care about that tile too much right now though and i think we are going to explore in this direction now again when you explore you spend one action point per tile that you move to and now we could continue to explore although remember we only have one action point left that we can use on this turn in fact we should spend that action after we have explored we can show that by moving this down to the three spot well we currently have one action point left that we can spend on this turn and i think let's use it to excavate now whenever we do an excavate action we are going to take the tile where our expedition leader currently is as long as we have enough action points to take that tile the basic cost to excavate a tile is
three action points and then that is reduced by one for every archaeologist or expedition leader that is on that tile whether or not it is your specific colored expedition leader in this case that means we have a cost of three minus one minus one so this is only going to cost one action point to excavate this tile now i do want to mention that there are other ways that could increase the cost to excavate if there is a tent token on a tile that increases the cost by one and if you are excavating one of these noon attack tiles then that will also increase the action points needed by one the final thing that could increase the number of action points we need to excavate has to do with other tiles being overlapped on top of the tile that we are excavating and i'll talk about the details of how that works later on in the tutorial now these extra costs can stack up if this tent was on top of that tile there then the cost would be five it would be three for the base plus one for this tent and plus one for the noon attack tile now fortunately over here this is just going to cost us one action point because again that is three minus two for the two figures that are on top of that tile it's worth noting that you can excavate for free if you have enough figures on top of a tile to bring the cost down to zero so let's spend one of our action points to excavate this tile and what we're going to do is remove the tile and then we can see that underneath that tile there are three other tiles showing there is yet another hex grid of tiles underneath here and they are offset and now we have to place these tokens down onto the new tiles and we have to split them up as evenly
as possible so if there were three tokens we'd have to put one on each in this case we have two tokens though so we can decide which of these two we want to go down onto in this case i think we want to place them like that and it is worth noting that if there was a tent on the tile that was just excavated then you would also have to place this down onto one of the newly revealed tiles underneath and when you do that you do not need to worry about this being up to three spaces away from a previous tent that restriction only applies when you place new tents down onto the board the next thing that we have to do is take the tile that we excavated and place it into our area now if this was an ice sheet tile like this then that means it always has an action printed on the back and we can put this into a face down hand that we can look at but that we want to keep hidden from our opponents we can have as many of these tiles as we want and we can actually play these by spending no action points on our turn and we can play as many of these as we want just doing what the text says now if the tile that we excavated showed an artifact then we would place it onto our guild board onto the matching symbol spot we'll talk about those artifacts a little bit later on they show up on the layers of tiles that are underneath the ice sheet now this tile that we just picked up is an explosive rune the action on this says you can remove a fully uncovered tile from the board face down so you don't gain that tile but you get rid of it which could help with trying to excavate even deeper on the board now i'm going to keep this face up over here because we are playing as a purple player but remember these are kept face down normally so that your opponents cannot see what they say the final thing that we have to do is
actually spend that action point we have now spent three action points on our turn and we could continue to take actions as long as they did not cost any action points but i don't think we have any more to do so that means our turn is over and play is going to move clockwise meaning it's now time for the green player to take their turn the first thing green wants to do is build this campsite and they're going to put it right over here that is not too close to any of the other campsites and you'll notice there is an archaeologist on the spot so that is an option when you're placing these down we went on to an empty spot but this might actually be even better for the green player than the turn that we took initially now that did cost green one action point and now they're going to spend another one in order to explore that means they can move their expedition leader onto an adjacent tile and remember these leaders can bring with them up to three of the neutral archaeologists tokens so they are going to move on to this spot and now they have one more action to spend and they are going to excavate although this is going to cost them zero actions because they have three tokens on this tile and the base cost to excavate is three so that's three minus three or zero and that means they can excavate this tile placing that into their hand and then they have to place these down as evenly as they can now at this point did they have one more action that they could use on this turn and if they wanted to they could just pass and then use three actions on their next turn instead and they have indeed decided to do that so the green player's turn is done and they have three action points left for their next turn on this day
and now it's time for the orange player to go they've decided to do something similar to the green player's turn they're going to start by spending one action in order to build this campsite over there which is not too close to other campsites then they will spend an action point to explore bringing this archaeologist along and then they will excavate this site by spending zero action points next up they have to evenly distribute these and they are going to go like that i am assuming that this is two different areas this is a prototype and we can see on this side of the board there are three areas showing so i'm going to pretend like there is a tile break right over there at this point orange can spend one more action point if they want and they are going to do that to explore onto this spot with that archaeologist now orange is done with their turn which means it's once again time for us to go and we can spend up to three action points although we only have two action points currently to spend now i think let's spend the first of these to do a new type of action called plan the way this works is we can take one of these planning tokens from the supply and then we can place this onto our guild board now at the start of the next day of the game this is going to increase the number of action points we have by one so we will start with six instead of five so we've essentially banked one action for the next day now it is worth noting players can have at most one of these planning tokens in their area at any given time now we have one more action point that we can spend and i figure that we should do that and with this we will explore and simply move on to this spot there well we no longer have any action points
to spend but that does not necessarily mean that our turn is over we could potentially do as many free action things as we want to now one thing that we are going to do now is an end of day action now this does not cost any of our action points and it's something that you can do at most once per day when you do this if you have any actions left you will lose all of them so you usually want to do this once all of your actions have been spent now in this moment we can actually remove the artifacts on our guild board in order to activate these request cards that are either hidden in our hand or that are out here on a public market but at this point we don't have any of these artifacts so i'll talk about the details of how we perform this later on in the game so we will do our end of day action and essentially do nothing over here so that means we are done for the rest of the round and play can continue over to the green player as you can see they have three actions to spend because they only used two in their first turn and they are now going to use one of these to explore with this they're going to move on to that spot there then they're going to spend another action to explore again they'll bring this archaeologist along and at this point they have one action point left now as you can see currently their expedition leader is on top of a tile that has two other tiles on it now when you excavate you can excavate a tile that has at most one other tile on top so that means right now the expedition leader cannot excavate this tile since there are two on top of it now they are going to spend their last action in order to move on to this spot bringing along two
archaeologists they don't have any more action points left but they can excavate this because that is going to be a cost of three minus three or zero after that they have to place these out as evenly as they can and now green is done with their turn when they do their end of day action they again don't have any artifacts to give up so that's simply going to finish their turn and now the orange player can go they have two actions available to them and they're going to spend the first of these to explore they're going to head on to this spot bringing along an archaeologist and then they'll explore again moving on to this tile here that's going to use their final action and that's also going to finish their turn they don't have any artifacts to give up during the end of their day and once again i'll talk about the details of how this end of day artifact spending action works later on in the tutorial at this point we have reached the end of the day for all of the players and that means the first day of the game has come to a close now what we do is pass this first player marker clockwise to the next player and then we are going to reveal the next event from this deck now in this case that event says traces of the last expedition each player is going to draw an ice sheet card from the reserve now as you can see there is a stack of ice sheet tiles over there and each of us will now take one of those next up we will all gain five action points unless something changes that for us remember we have this planning token so that means we will go up to six action points and then we can return this to the supply all right the green player can now take their turn
the first thing they've decided to do is explore they're going to move their expedition leader there then they're going to do this again so that they have these two archaeologists and now they could potentially excavate this tile as you can see there is one other tile on top of it and when you excavate there can be at most one other tile on top now if there is a tile on top of the tile that you are excavating that is going to increase the number of action points it takes by one so right now the base cost is three minus three from the tokens plus one from this covering tile so that means the green player would have to spend an action point to excavate this or they could spend one of their ice sheet tiles and that is what they are going to do now this says they are going to place one archaeologist onto every tile with an expedition leader this is going to help them out and it will also help the rest of us so that was a rather nice thing they did i don't think it helps them more or less than the rest of us though it's just going to put a lot more of these archaeologists out there on the board now when the green player wants to excavate this will cost no action points because the cost is three plus one minus four so they can excavate this spot and whenever you excavate a tile that has another tile on top that tile on top is going to collapse when a tile collapses you remove it from the game without looking at it and if there was anything on top of that tile then it would go back to the associated supplies that means if there was an expedition leader it would go back to that player's guild board if there were any archaeologists on it they would go back to the main supply and if there was a tent tile on it then that would actually go onto the guild
board of the active player and they could then place that tent out as a build 10 action later on in the game in this case there was nothing on top of that tile though so this is just removed from the game and then the green player can excavate this tile here once this is removed you can see there is another tile hiding underneath it and that has a slightly darker color as we go deeper underground these tiles will have a darker and darker color and this is the first artifact tile that anyone has taken during the game now when they flip this over you'll notice there is nothing surprising on the back this icon shows you exactly what would be on this backside and each of these artifacts comes in one of five types and each individual type is going to be either active or inactive now an inactive artifact looks like this where the backside does not look like it's doing a whole lot and it just shows that icon we can see down here this next artifact under the stack is the same type i'm not going to pull it out right now but we'll probably see it later but right now you can probably tell that it has these lines spiraling around it and that means we know that this is going to be an active version of the artifact now every single one of this color tile is inactive some of the tiles on this level are inactive and some are active and on the layer below this all of them are active now i will describe why we care about these being active or inactive later on in the tutorial now this artifact they just excavated is going to go onto their guild board and they're going to put it onto the stack that matches that specific icon so they can put it there at this point
they need to distribute these tokens as evenly as they can however before they do that they are going to play another one of these ice sheet tiles this one is abseiling rope and it says that when you excavate you can ignore the archaeologist placement rule where you normally have to spread them out as evenly as possible so they've decided they're just going to place all of these onto that single tile over there at this point the green player can spend one more action if they want to and they've decided to explore and remember these leaders can take up to three archaeologists with them and they are going to bring all of these along the way specifically they've decided to move all of these onto this tile here at this point they don't have anything else they can do they can't excavate this tile because it does have two tiles on top of it well play is going to move clockwise over to the orange player and the first thing they are going to do is excavate without spending any of their action points the green player added archaeologists to each of the expedition leader spots which means on this location they have four of these tokens and the expedition cost is four it's the base three plus one because this is a nunatek type mountain tile so they can excavate this tile here and then they have to place these down as evenly as possible they have decided to place them like this they have one more to place and they're going to put it here and then they have decided to spend one of their ice sheet tiles as you can see this one is achievement fetish and it says they can excavate on a tile that has that specific artifact
icon on it and this excavation is free as long as their leader is on top of that tile when we focus in we can see that that does indeed match the symbol so that means they can spend this in order to excavate this tile for free now that does mean that this top tile is going to collapse so that is removed then the orange player can take this tile here and then they have to place this out onto one of the other spots and they're going to go over there now once again they know that this is an inactive tile because all of the tiles on this layer are inactive and they also don't see those spiraling shapes around it in fact if we look over here this tile is active because you can see those spiraling shapes but we know that one is not going to be active because it does not have those shapes again on this layer some are inactive and some are active the orange player can put this over here and up to this point they haven't actually spent any action points on their turn at this point they are going to start spending their action points though they're going to use one to explore with their leader and they're going to move on to this spot then they are going to spend another one to explore again and they'll jump up here and then after that they are going to excavate for free they have a discount of four and there's a base cost of three so that means they're definitely at a cost of zero action points so they can remove this tile and then they have to evenly distribute these tokens out and they are going to go like that at this point they could spend one more action and they are going to and they will explore going onto this
spot with their expedition leader all right the orange player is now done with their turn which means we can go and we should take a look at these ice sheet tiles that we have now we already know about this one with the explosive rune that lets us remove a fully uncovered tile from the board and the other one that we just drew as part of this traces of the last expedition event is a boreal smilodon now that says we could spend this in order to place a smilodon pawn onto any tile and that tile cannot be excavated until our next turn when we remove the smilodon token so we can use this to stall out one of our opponents if it looks like they really need to excavate a specific tile out there on the board now i think let's start our turn off by using this explosive rune we will reveal it to everybody and now we can remove one fully uncovered tile from the board face down and i think let's remove this one it has the extra difficulty to be excavated and i am more interested in the artifacts underneath so that explosive rune will collapse this tile and now let's excavate this tile that has a base cost of three plus one because there is a tile on top of it and then we have a discount of three so overall that is going to cost us one action point then this tile is going to collapse so we can remove it from the game and then we can excavate this tile here and after that we have to evenly distribute these tokens next up we can place this onto our guild board and we can now take up to two more actions on this turn well let's focus out because now i'd like to discuss the last of the action types that you can take on your turn
now this is a call action and it always uses one of your action points and then you can either move your expedition leader from wherever they are on the map onto any one camp token or you can take an archaeologist from the supply and add that down onto a location with a camp now as you can see we are at the bottom of a hole at the moment and it would take a few action points to dig out but it might make more sense to use a call action to just go to one of these tents now part of me wants to use a call action to go here and then potentially hijack these archaeologists that the green player has been collecting now remember these archeologists are neutral so anyone can use them and i would love to come over here move on to this spot and then continue moving bringing them with us but at this point we have just two action points left available so we could go there for one and then onto that spot for two but then the green player could just move on bringing those archaeologists with them now honestly i think at this moment i am going to pass on our turn we've only used one of our action points and we have five left and we can use those on future turns within this given turn and considering the situation out here on the board i'm not sure where i want to call our leader to so let's see how things change when our opponents take their turns before we get to go once again remember you must use at least one action point on your turn and we did use one so that means we are just fine to now finish our turn and let the green player go after considering their options green is going to use an action point to explore and interestingly they are going to leave these archeologists behind
they are going to explore onto this spot here and remember when you do an explore action you can never directly cross these fault lines on these ice sheet tiles now at this point they are going to use this ice sheet tile that has a swarm of polar termites action and it says they can do an excavate action on an ice sheet tile for free as long as your leader is on top of it remember all of these on the top are ice sheet tiles and this one is also an ice sheet so that means that the green player is going to excavate this tile and then they have to place these down and they'll do it like that after that they are going to excavate this tile because it has a cost of three plus one for the covering tile minus four for the tokens on top of it so they kind of planned ahead to make sure they landed on the spot to then excavate this location now that tile on top is going to collapse when they do this next up they have to place these out as evenly as they can and now i do want to point out that this tile right here has one tile on top of it but it is not an excavatable tile because this tile has other tiles on top of it as well so it might look like there's one tile here making this a possible excavation but technically there are actually three tiles currently on top of this one so that one cannot be excavated until there is at most one tile on top next up they have to add this artifact onto the associated stack and now i would like to discuss the benefits that each of these artifacts can give if they are fully activated on a guild
board now an artifact type is going to be activated if there is at least one activated artifact on that spot or if there are two inactive artifacts or if there is an inactive artifact and at least one of these prismatic artifacts those look like this right over here and these are effectively wild when you take these you can put them onto any of the stacks now at the moment the incandescence green player does indeed have an activated artifact spot because they have two or more inactive artifacts on that location now this specific artifact is called an exalted artifact and once this becomes activated that player gains an ability where the first time on each of their turns when they excavate a tile they will then add one archaeologist from the supply onto one of the three tiles that was just revealed in addition of course to the archaeologists and leaders that are spread out onto those revealed tiles so that means the green player will be adding more archaeologists onto the board as they excavate as long of course as they continue to have the exalted artifact be activated now i think i'd like to discuss the activated effects of the other five artifacts now so let's move on to the harmony artifact here once again this becomes activated when there is at least one activated artifact on there or two inactive or an inactive and a prismatic artifact and the harmony artifact effect says once per turn you can spend one of your action points to then move one archaeologist from every tile that is adjacent to your leader onto your leader's tile so that actually unlocks a new action type that lets you bring a bunch of
archaeologists together with a very efficient usage of action points next up there is the obliteration artifact and as long as this is activated then once per turn whenever a player causes a tile to collapse that player will gain two action points that they can then use on that current day now speaking of collapses we've seen quite a bit of that so far with excavation but there is one other way that collapses can happen and that is once any tile has just one other tile adjacent to it if it's in the middle of the board or if a tile is adjacent to the edge of the board and not touching any other tiles so for example over here if both of these tiles were removed then this tile would collapse because it would only be touching the edge of the board and likewise if we look over here and for example say that both of these tiles have been removed then this tile would collapse because it would only be touching one other tile on that specific level now once again once a tile collapses all archaeologists on it will go back to the supply any leaders on that tile will go back to those players guild boards and any camp tokens on that tile will go to the active player's guild board let's come back over here and now discuss the philosopher type artifact and when this is activated then you can actually collect one tile that collapses on your turn and you place it onto your board or into your hand depending on what kind of tile it is so this column right here is all about collapsing things on your turn if you have both of these active then once per turn when you collapse a tile you gain action points and once per turn that collapse tile can go into your area instead of removed
from the game so that is a pretty good combo over here you'll notice that these have to do with the archaeologists with this one adding archaeologists down and that one letting you move them onto your leader tile very efficiently now at this point there is just one other artifact type and this is called the achievement artifact and as long as this is activated then at the start of that player's day they begin that day with one additional action point so as you can see all of these effects are quite powerful which is why players might want to get activated artifacts because you need just one of them to get that effect or you can have two or more of the inactive ones to make it happen now players are going to be able to remove these artifacts in order to complete various request cards in order to get victory points but of course when you remove these artifacts you might take too many away to then deactivate that type now at this point the green player has one action point left and they are simply going to use that to plan so that means they are going to start with an extra action point on the next day and now they are going to perform their end of day action now as i said before during this you can spend your artifacts in order to complete requests and specifically that player can spend zero to three artifacts at this time when you spend artifacts you will remove them from your board which could of course deactivate some of your abilities and also at this point if players have any of the prismatic artifacts in any of these stacks they could remove them and put them into other piles of their choice now when you remove these artifacts you are going to use them to pay for either a request card that you have in your hand or the face-up supply that is near the main game board at the start of the game
all players drew three of these request cards and then discarded one of them so that means they have two others that they are looking at specifically for us these are the ones that we are going for now every one of these request cards shows you the type of artifact that you have to remove in order to activate it this one right here can take any artifact and that could be activated or not and this card specifically only lets you play it if you put a philosopher artifact on top of it once again that can be active or inactive now whenever you play these from your hand you put them face up on the table and you do not gain any more so we have at most two of these hidden ones during the game that being said in a three player game we do have five of these cards face up at the bottom of the table and any player can take one of these as long as they pay for it with an artifact right now the green player only has the exalted type artifact and that does match up with this over here that icon is specific to the prismatic artifacts now this says that they would gain four victory points if they have the most of the exalted artifacts at the end of the game otherwise they would gain two victory points now i did say at the end of the game because if they took this they would then place this artifact to pay for it and they'd put this face up in their area and it would then give them these victory points only once the game is over so this specific card is worth at least two points to them but it would give them a goal to try and get four points from it by having the most of that artifact once the game is over now it's important to note that during an end of day phase players can only take at most one of these request cards and place it in their area that means if they take one from this main supply they cannot play one from their hand and if they play one from their hand they cannot take one from the main supply
now i did say that they could spend up to three of these artifacts and the reason for that is because there are also these side request cards every single one of these looks the same they show those icons on top and they are all worth two victory points at the end of the game and in order to take one of these you have to either place two inactive artifacts on top of it or one active artifact so that means the inactive artifact would effectively be worth one point each whereas that active one would be worth two now remember you can only remove up to three of these artifacts on each of the game's turns and the game will last at most eight rounds so that means if you are too precious keeping these on your board to gain those special effects you might later on in the game not be able to remove as many of these as you want to to get extra victory points from these cards it is a balance that all of the players have to weigh now after considering their options the green player decides that they would rather keep this artifact activated so they are not going to discard any artifacts during their end of day phase that's happening right now so they have two up here and the green player is now done for the rest of this day alright the orange player can go and the first thing they want to do is play an ice cart effect it says that one archaeologist will be placed onto every spot with a leader so three more archaeologists will go out which i think is going to make everyone happy and then the orange player is going to excavate over here the cost is three plus one for this covering tile minus four so that means they do not need to pay anything this tile is going to collapse and be removed and then they can place this over here
now they have two of these inactive achievement style artifacts which means that that ability is now active and that is going to give them one extra action point in the next day as long of course as they don't remove these down to the point where it becomes inactive after that they have to place these down and they're going to go like that and then they're going to spend an action point to explore onto this spot after that they are going to spend another action point to explore up there bringing a couple archaeologists with them and then they are going to use this ice sheet ability it says wreck now they are going to gain two action points immediately and they can then select one other opponent who is going to gain one action point so they will gain two bringing them back up to two now they do have to give it to us because the green player has already finished their day well the orange player can spend at most one more action point on this turn because they've already spent two and they currently are in a position where they could excavate this has a base cost of three plus one for the covering tile minus three so that is a cost of one overall and they've decided to do it so they will spend their third action point for this turn and then the top tile will collapse and then they are going to excavate this tile here this is an inactive exalted artifact so that'll go onto their guild board and then when they come back over here they have decided to spread these out like this all right we can go and we have six action points to spend and i think let's start by spending one action point
to explore onto this spot i was thinking about doing a call action to move our expedition leader to another camp but things have changed quite a bit over here and i think this is going to be a pretty good turn for us so we're going to spend one of our action points and then i think i want to excavate this spot has one tile on top of it so that is going to be three plus one or four and we have a discount of two so that means we have to spend two of our action points we've already spent one so that means we can spend two more to get to our maximum of three on this turn so let's spend two more which leaves us with three left over for this day and then we can excavate over here which means this tile is going to collapse and then we can remove this one here now we do have to evenly spread these out onto the next tiles below and i think we will put them like this after that we have to place this onto our guild board and now we are done with our turn the green player has already finished their day so that means they don't go and now the orange player can go they have one action available to them currently though and they've decided they are just going to plan so they'll spend that one action to place this token here effectively banking it for the next day of the game at this point the orange player will do their end of day action they have three artifacts over here this one over here is active whereas the other type is not so they will definitely consider getting rid of this to activate a card and they've actually decided they would like to take this request card here so that is going to take one of the exalted type and then they can place this on top of the card and put this face up in their area where it will be potentially worth
points to them at the end of the game after that we do not refill a new request card into this public market that refill is going to happen once all players have finished the day now orange is done which means we can go and we do have three actions left well i think let's spend one action to explore onto this location we will spend another action to explore up to there and then let's do this again to explore one more time in this case i think let's explore onto this ice sheet and now we don't have any more actions to spend but we can excavate this for free because that is going to be three minus three or zero so we can excavate this tile and then see what the effect is now that says white spiders the effect says we can remove two archaeologists from the board and then place one archaeologist onto the tile with our leader next up we have to spread these out and i think we'll go like this and i think we are now ready for our end of day step we could use this i suppose but i think we should hold on to it for the future and when we look onto our board we have two inactive types of artifacts this one right here does match up with this request card in our hand this says we would get four prestige points if we have the most of this philosopher type artifact at the end of the game otherwise we would get two points so we could effectively spend one inactive artifact to get at least two points or potentially more at the moment neither of our opponents have any of this philosopher type and there are a couple of those out on the board near our leader that does seem pretty good but remember
if we are able to activate the philosopher ability then once per turn when we collapse a tile we could keep that tile instead of sending it away so that is a powerful thing we want to consider especially since we are just one inactive philosopher artifact away from unlocking that ability now we do have one other artifact and we could use that to fulfill this card we can use any of the non-prismatic types and that says at the end of the game we get one prestige point for each artifact in our highest type stack there is one other request we should consider we could take this one with this inactive philosopher artifact and then for the rest of the game whenever we play an ice sheet tile instead of removing it from the game we put it directly on top of this card and it's worth one point at the end of the game currently we have two of these ice sheet tiles so we could effectively turn these into victory points and we would be more incentivized to excavate more of those ice sheet tiles to not only use their effects but also place them down onto here to gain those extra victory points and i think that is going to be worth it to give it a shot the idea of activating this to keep collapsed tiles does seem good but i also like this request card so we are going to place this on top of that and then put this over into our area we could potentially get a bunch of points for this at the end of the game depending on the number of ice tiles we spend and the fact that we already have two of these i think makes that worth it now these are still technically in our hand and at this point we cannot remove any more artifact tiles the reason for that is because the only other type we have is inactive and the only thing that we could do is get one of these side requests and that would take two
inactive tiles so we can't get one of these and we can only deploy one of these regular request cards a turn so we are done well we've now come to the end of the second day and now is the time where we have to refill this public market of request cards so we can place these out here and they are actually similar this one it gives you two four or six prestige points if you have one two or three of the obliteration artifact variants and this is the same but for the exalted now when it's talking about variants that has to do with these dots at the bottom of the tiles you can see this exalted tile has two dots whereas that one has three so those are different variants all right let's now move on to the next day we have to reveal an event and that one is backup it says each player places an archaeologist onto the tile where their expedition leader is currently located so that means three more archaeologists will be added to the board after that we can pass the first player marker clockwise and now every player is going to gain five action points next up each player who has a planning token will gain one more which means both of our opponents now have six and then finally every player who has an activated achievement artifact is going to gain one more action point so the orange player actually has seven artifacts in this day at this point we can now start playing the day and orange gets to go first the first thing they've decided to do is call and that is going to take one of their action points and now they can move their leader onto any camp or they could bring an archaeologist onto any camp they've decided they're going to move their leader up here as you can see if they explored that would have taken two action points
but the call just made that take one the second thing they're going to do is call again but this time they are going to take an archaeologist from the supply and add it onto one spot with a camp and they will put it over here after that they are going to spend one more action and explore they're gonna head over here and they cannot spend any more actions since they've already used three but they can excavate the spot because it costs three and they have a three discount so that means they can take this ice sheet tile and then these tokens will be placed evenly onto the tiles underneath after considering their options they are going to place them like this and immediately spend this ice sheet action that says expedition survivors and it says after they excavate they place one additional archaeologist onto each revealed tile this way so three more archaeologists will appear onto the board well orange is done with their turn so now we get to go and we do have five actions total for this day and we can spend up to three right now well i think we should go exploring let's head on to this spot bringing along an archaeologist for one action point then let's take all of these and move on to this spot so we have taken archaeologists away from the orange player and that used two action points and now we can excavate this spot it has a cost of three plus one and we have discount of four so that's not going to cost us any action points at all this tile right here is going to collapse so we can remove that and actually as soon as we do that there will be two more collapses
this tile right here is only touching one other tile so it will collapse and the same goes for that tile it's only touching this tile up here so it is going to collapse and since it had a tent on it this will be removed and placed onto our guild board for one action point in the future we could build this campsite back onto the board and place our expedition later on to that location well that was a bunch of collapsing but we haven't actually excavated yet now we can take this tile it will then be placed onto our guild board and we did spend two action points over all this turn so we should log that and now we have to evenly place these onto the three revealed tiles i think we are going to place them like this actually we'll put this one over there and now we can spend one more action on this turn if we want to because we've only done two so far i think let's go for it let's explore up to this spot here and then we can excavate this for free because it has a cost of three minus three for these three figures so we will excavate this tile and then let's put our leader here and spread those two out like that this artifact can be placed onto our board and we have spent three actions and done a bunch of things on this turn i am kind of wishing we had the activated philosopher artifact so that we could have kept one of those collapsed tiles but we can't do everything in this game and i'm still feeling good about the decisions we've made now at this point we cannot spend any more action points but i do think i want to use this ice sheet tile that lets us place the smilodon down onto one
tile and no one can excavate it until the start of our next turn now normally this would be removed but we will put it over here instead because every single ice sheet tile on that request card will be worth one point to us at the end of the game now let's place this smilodon out and i want to put it right here the reason for that is because we should be able to relatively easily excavate this on our next turn and that would be our second inactive philosopher artifact which would enable that ability i don't want our opponents swooping in and taking this from us so we are going to have it protected with this myelodon well we are now done with our turn and before we move on to the green players turn i think this is a good time to discuss how the game will end there are two different ways the game will end the first is if we go through eight rounds of the game as you can see there are eight of these event cards so we can easily keep track of that at the end of that eighth day we would then score up our victory points but there is one other way the game could end before we complete eight days that has to do with how well we are collectively excavating out here on the board so far we've seen the ice sheet layer this top artifact layer and a middle artifact layer and underneath this layer there is a lower layer and underneath that is the edifice layer which is the ancient alien city that we are trying to dig down to now if at any point one of those ancient alien edifice tiles are completely revealed then that will trigger the end game and each player can then take one more turn where they can spend up to three action points as long as they have them to spend and after that we will then move into final scoring now there are two ways
that players can gain points that they will add up at the end of the game the first of these has to do with request and side request cards they have in front of them each of these request cards has a condition that will give a varying amount of prestige points and then of course every single side request that is completed will give two prestige points so players will add up all of the points they get from the requests and side requests and then they will add to that the prestige points they get from any of these three decree cards that were dealt out at the start of the game you always have three of these and each player will gain the indicated prestige points as long as they meet the listed conditions for this set the first decree says each player will gain 10 prestige points for every artifact stack they have that has five or more tiles in it this next one will give each player one prestige point for each inactive artifact they have total on their guild board and this last one gives players one prestige point for every inactive obliteration artifact and two prestige for every active obliteration artifact so all players have an incentive to make big stacks of artifacts as well as collect obliteration artifacts and inactive artifacts once players add these prestige points up to the points they gain from their requests they will then know their final score and the player with the most prestige points will be the winner well at this point our turn is done and now the green player can take their turn they've decided to start by exploring and they're going to bring along three archaeologists and then they will explore a second time heading up onto this obliteration type artifact location now they are going to excavate this that
is not going to cost them any action points because it costs four and they have a discount of four the first thing they do is collapse this tile removing it from the game and then they are going to excavate this obliteration tile and that will go onto their board after that they have to evenly place these tokens out and then after that their activated exalted artifact effect will come into play remember this says the first time on their turn when they excavate they will then add one architect onto a revealed spot so that is going to go onto this spot over here and then they can immediately excavate this tile because it costs three and they have three on there so they don't even have to spend any of their action points up to this moment they've only spent two action points on their turn so over here they will excavate that means these are going to drop down and you'll notice below we have the lower artifact level where every single artifact is activated this one right here is from the middle level where some are active and some aren't this one happens to not be well they can place this onto their stack and then they have to evenly spread these out but they do not activate their exalted artifact ability again remember that only happens the first time they excavate on a specific turn at this point they could spend one more action but they've decided to hold off they have four actions left and they want to see what happens out here on the board before they commit to their next plan the first thing orange has decided to do is explore and they're going to head down here after that they're going to explore again and then head on to the tile where our expedition leader is
next up they are going to excavate and this is not going to cost them anything because our expedition leader will help out with their discount it costs four and there is a discount of four so they can successfully excavate here the first thing that happens though is this is going to collapse and to be removed then they will take this tile and excavate it and then all of these are going to be evenly placed underneath after considering the options they're going to put us over there they want to be over here along with one archaeologist then they can add this onto their guild board you'll notice this is not activated and now they want to spend another one of their action points to explore onto this spot and then they are going to excavate again the cost is three and they have a discount of three so that won't cost any of their action points and then they will excavate this inactive achievement artifact that will go on to their board and then they will spread these tokens out just like this actually they're going to swap these around and at this point the orange player is done with their turn they've used three action points and they don't have any other free actions they want to take that means it's time for us to go and before we do anything this smilodon is going to wander away it's done protecting this spot from being excavated now i think let's spend a action point to explore up here and then another action point to explore onto this tile and then let's excavate it for free because it costs three and we have a discount of three this inactive artifact can be placed on top of our other philosopher type artifact and since we have two inactive artifacts
there the philosopher effect is now active for us remember that effect says that on your turn when you collapse a tile you can keep one of those instead of removing it from the game unfortunately it does not look like we are going to be in a position to collapse anything during this day but we should hopefully be able to collapse some tiles in the future now we do have to spread these out and i think we will do it like this at this point we don't have any other actions and i don't think we have any free actions we want to take so let's now perform our end of day action this means we can now spend up to three artifacts from our guild board we could afford to play either of these we also could play this one over here as well as that one over there but honestly at this point i kind of feel like we should probably try to collect some more artifacts to gain some of those special abilities to help us out later on in the game i don't think we need to commit to these requests just yet so i don't think we're going to spend any of these well we are now done for this day and at the moment play is going to move over here to the green player who does still have four action points left they've decided to start by exploring and they're going to head over here and then they're going to excavate on this spot it has a cost of three and they have a discount of two so that's going to cost one action point so they will spend that and then excavate this tile and it is the first of this achievement type that they have and then they have to spread these out and they will go like this now green has decided they are done spending actions for their turn so the orange player can go and with
just one action left they have decided they are going to plan and take one of these tokens and then they'll perform their end of day action after considering their options they want to spend one of these achievement style artifacts they still have two inactive ones on this stack so the effect is still active for them now they're going to use this in order to take this public request that says at the end of the game every ice sheet tile that they have in their hand will be worth two victory points to them so they are actually motivated not to spend any more ice sheet tiles currently they have one in their hand so it seems likely they won't spend it although they might if they decide it's worth it well orange is now done with their end of day action and we have already performed our end of day action this means the green player can go and they have two action points and i just realized they forgot to use their exalted effect the last turn when they excavated they should have added one archaeologist to one of the revealed spots and they would have put this over here sorry for missing that now the green player can take their turn and they've decided to explore once going on to this location and the last thing they will do is plan so they're going to put this over here and now they can finish things off with their end of turn action after considering their options they have decided to play a card from their hand this will cost one of any of the regular artifact types and it will get them one prestige point at the end of the game for every artifact in their highest type stack now they are going to spend one of these exalted types in order to afford that they have one of each of these other
types and they are hoping to get more so that they can activate those abilities of course if they get an activated tile then that would activate the ability with just one tile which would motivate them to remove these artifacts in order to enable more request cards well green is done so now we can reveal a new card to refill this market that says you can spend one of that artifact to gain two prestige points for each prismatic artifact that you have at the end of the game all right let's move into the next day we are going to need to reveal a new event we also have to pass the first player marker and we need to gain our action points i figure we'll gain the action points first everyone goes up to five the uh orange and green players will gain an extra one for their planning tokens and then the orange player gets yet another one because of this achievement effect that is active for them next up we can reveal the event that says solstice all day long ice sheets can be searched for one action point less so there is a discount of one on searching the ice sheets which should make it even easier to excavate those tiles well let's start things off and spend one action to explore and i think we will go on to this spot then we will explore again and head up here and now let's use this ice sheet ability to remove two archaeologists from the board and then place one onto the tile with our leader remember we don't remove this from the game this is going to be placed onto our request card where it's going to be worth one prestige point at the end of the game now at the moment i think i'm most worried about the orange player so let's remove a couple of archaeologists
from their neck of the woods after that we can add an archaeologist onto our tile and now let's go ahead and excavate that will cost four and we have a discount of force that won't cost anything this tile is going to collapse but instead of removing it from the game we are going to add it into our area because we have this activated philosopher artifact ability now if this was an artifact it would go onto our guild board but it is an ice sheet tile so it goes into our hand and this is an obliteration fetish which says we can excavate an obliteration artifact for free if our leader is on top of it next up we have to actually excavate this tile and then i think we will spread out like this after that we can place this prismatic artifact down and it can go onto any of these stacks now whenever you gain a prismatic artifact you can actually pull all of the other prismatic artifacts you have from every stack and then put them down into the stacks that you want and remember at the end of each day you can also reorganize these prismatic artifacts now i think i am tempted to place this onto this spot here so that we could gain that harmony ability to spend one action point to bring one archaeologist from each adjacent tile to our leader's tile that being said we could also put it up here in order to place one extra archaeologist down the first time we excavate each turn both of those do seem pretty good we can also place this over here so we continue with this ability and then have the option of removing this to pay for a request card that actually might be a decent idea considering we kind of want to get this one online
where we can get extra points for having a lot of those specific artifacts we could of course put this somewhere else but i think for now we're going to put it onto this spot here so we have now activated the exalted effect now at this point we've spent two out of the maximum three action points and i think let's go ahead and spend our third in order to explore over here because then we can excavate this tile for free now this is a philosopher type tile and we know it is active because it has these lines going around it it also has some more art with the light flowing through the artifact on the other side of the tile this will of course go on top of that stack and remember if you have at least one activated tile on that stack then you gain the ability so that means we could keep this here and start to get rid of these in order to gain extra victory points so we can place this here and again you can reorder all of these stacks whenever you do an end of day action one thing we do have to do is reposition all of these tokens and i think we are going to go like that the other thing that happens is because we have the exalted artifact effect enabled we can add another archaeologist onto one of the revealed tiles and we'll put it there well our turn is done so now the green player can go and they're going to start by spending one action point to walk up here and then another one to explore by themselves with their leader onto this spot after that they are going to flip this over and use it that lets them excavate this harmony type artifact for free as long as their leader is on top of it so that means they are going to excavate this and then they can place their leader on
top of that prismatic tile then this will be added onto their board it is the inactive version of that tile at this point their exalted artifact effect is going to add another archaeologist onto one of the revealed tiles and they've decided to put it over here where their leader is now they're going to excavate this for free it has a cost of three and they have a discount of four so that means all of these are going to be spread evenly on those tiles and they've decided to go like that this prismatic tile can then be placed onto their board and they'll put it on top of the obliteration stack at this point green has spent two action points and they have decided to spend a third in order to excavate this spot it has a cost of three and a discount of two so they do have to spend one action point and when they excavate this for the first time in the game we have revealed the bottom most set of tiles which are those ancient edifice tiles they do have to spread these out of course and they are going to go like this and if you remember these edifice tiles are associated with one of the end game triggers but that only happens once one of these edifice tiles is completely revealed as of this moment there are three edifice tiles that are one third revealed now this is an activated philosopher type artifact so that is going to go onto the green player's board and the philosopher effect is now active for them so that means once per turn when they collapse a tile they can keep that tile instead of discarding it well at this point the green player thinks they are done with their turn they did quite a lot as you
can see and now it's time for the orange player to go after considering their options orange wants to explore here they will then explore again jumping up to this spot and they will explore a third time going on to this location here now they are going to excavate that is going to collapse this tile because that was on top there was a cost of four and a discount of four so they did not have to spend any more action points this means they are going to take this tile and then they are going to place the tokens out like this that inactive artifact will go onto their board and they've decided their turn is done this means we get to go again well we have two action points and we do also have an ice sheet tile that would let us excavate an obliteration style artifact for free as long as our leader is on top of it now there is one here and one there and i think let's start by spending an action point to explore up here along with these architects let's then explore again but just go up here with our leader and then use this ice sheet tile to excavate this for free now this is going to go onto our request card because we spent an ice sheet tile we will then collapse this tile and of course this is the first collapsed tile that we've done this turn and we do have the philosopher artifact effect enabled so we get to keep this and ooh this is another effect that lets us excavate for free this one being for the exalted type artifact of course we do have to excavate this tile and then we will evenly place ourselves onto that tile there we will then put this one onto our board
and then let's go ahead and excavate again for free that is a cost of three and a discount of three so we can take all of these and then i think we will spread ourselves out like that on the board now we do actually have this uh exalted effect which we should have already used with our first excavation and we would have put it with our leader so there should have been another one of these archaeologists when this tile was taken so we'll fix that by just placing this over here now this is going to go onto our board and now that we have two inactive obliteration style artifacts this effect is online and that says the first time we collapse a tile on our turn we will gain two action points unfortunately we won't gain use of that on this turn but it is still a great thing to have in the future and we have a whole bunch of artifacts now we should probably consider getting rid of more of these to enable more request tiles to get those end game prestige points well i think we are done with our turn and i think we are done with the day so i think we should consider enabling a request card in particular i think let's go for this one that is going to take one of our philosopher type artifacts and we can get rid of this one to pay for it and this is worth four points if we have the most of these at the end of the game and two points if we don't so that's a minimum of two victory points and at the moment we still have more of this type of artifact than our opponents we have two compared to the one of both of them but it is still technically a majority now we could remove more of these artifacts in order to achieve one or more side request cards but at this moment i'm not sure if that makes sense just yet so i think we are going
to hold off all right i think we are done which means the green player can go and they are going to start by exploring here they will then explore again and then explore one more time heading onto this tile now they are going to excavate that because there is a cost of four and a discount of four which means it does not cost them anything and that is going to collapse this tile now this tile is going to be removed but before that happens we can see that the green player has their obliteration effect online and that says the first time they collapse a tile they are going to gain two action points back so they are back up to two and then this is removed and then of course they are going to excavate this prismatic artifact they do have to evenly spread these tokens out of course and then their exalted effect will come into play putting an archaeologist down onto one of the revealed spots and they will put it over there now this prismatic artifact does have to go onto one of their stacks and they've decided to put it over here which is going to enable their philosopher effect all right green is done with their turn so orange can go and they've decided to spend one action point to excavate here the cost is three and they have a discount of two which is why they spent one now they can place these out and they'll do it like this and that is an activated obliteration style artifact so that means the first time on their turn where they collapse a tile they will gain two action points back after that they're going to spend two of their action points to excavate here it has a cost of three and obviously they have a discount of one so that is going to excavate for them one activated harmony style artifact
and then they're going to place this over there this is going to go down onto their board where they already had one inactive of course this alone is going to enable the effect where they could spend one action point to bring up to one archaeologist from each adjacent tile onto their leaders tile well orange is done and we have already finished for the day so that means the green player can go again green has decided to spend one action point to head over here and then they are going to excavate this for free that is going to collapse this tile which they actually get to keep because they have an enabled philosopher effect and the first time they collapse a tile on their turn they gain two action points back now they do get to take this tile which will go on to their philosopher's stack and then they have to spread these out and they are going to do it like this and of course their exalted effect is going to add an archaeologist down which will go here now they have decided to excavate this spot that will gain them this active exalted artifact and that will go onto their board now they have to spread these out and they will go like this and then they will spend two explore actions going from here to up there green is done so orange can go and they are just going to plan so they can bank one action for their next turn and now they're going to do their end of day action they've decided to spend this inactive harmony artifact and they're going to take one of these requests that is going to be worth two prestige points at the end of the game for every prismatic artifact they have currently they don't actually have any but there are quite a few out there on
the board and they are planning on trying to get some of those before the game ends now they could also spend artifacts to gain side request cards but they've decided against it well it's now the green players turn and they are just going to finish things off by banking one action with a plan token now they can perform their end of day action and they can now reorganize their prismatic artifacts if they want and they have decided they are actually going to spend this one in order to enable this request from the market that is worth one prestige point for every type of artifact that they own at the end of the game now they've decided not to spend any artifacts for side requests and at this point the day is over that means we can reveal a couple more cards into this market this one will give prestige points for having different types of artifacts and the other one has to do with having the most harmony artifacts at the end of the game well this day has come to an end and i think at this point i'm going to stop playing through the game at this point we have revealed a couple of the bottom most tiles but it still might be another day or two until one of these is completely revealed which would cause the end of the game up to this point we have played through four out of the game's maximum eight days now of course if we played this to the end we would count up the prestige points we got from the public decrees as well as from these face-up request cards each of the players are starting to amass a decent amount of these and there is quite a bit for each player to consider as they are getting more of these and spending their artifacts to enable them as the game goes on well as i mentioned before i am going to stop playing through the game now i've discussed just about all of the
rules to the game which means this is a good time to bring the tutorial to a close i hope that you've enjoyed learning how to play ice as always i'd like to thank everyone who's been supporting this channel including these producer-level patreon supporters if you too would like to directly support the channel in the creation of future videos like this one then please go to jungetsgames.com support also if you enjoyed this video please click the like button for it down below as well as the subscribe button for the channel thanks for watching
