Circus Break - Playthrough with unexpected ending ;P

tyrone and stella here from meeple university thank you so much for joining us today we have two special guests some of you might already recognize joy who usually live stream with me hello joy hi and ben hello welcome to our playthrough of circus break yes so this is a two to five player memory and card finding game but it does particularly come to life at higher play accounts because there's a little bit of hidden roles in here and so we wanted to show you the game at four players indeed yes now this game was designed by donald lam and jason yeah yes so this is a quick game uh probably about 15 or so minutes yes 10 to 15 on the box let's get to uh see how it works before we play it okay so we are this is a hidden role game with a memory element here so what we're trying to do is break out of the circus and each of us has a role and what we're trying to do is find the supplies that we need to manage our escape and find the circus key and on each turn the typical thing we're going to be doing is picking up a card and looking at it and deciding whether to keep it or put it back and we've got quite limited space in our hand some of these cards are useful actions which are going to help us look harder or find things or take things from the other players other ones are the items we're looking for so what are we all looking for one of the characters is zoe and zoe needs three tools to escape and there's several copies of these tools out there she'll need batteries and a torch and a map and they don't go into the player's hand they just get revealed so zoe's got a few things to find but this they're more or less safe once they're there then we've got two animals the giraffe and the monkey each of them is trying to find their food which is the bananas in the case of the monkey and the leaf in the case of the giraffe once they've found that food and have it in hand they can then take the circus key once they know where the key is it's quite symmetric as well definitely and adding to the theme we've got uh the last character and the one which really works in the higher play accounts is the lion and the lion is looking for meat and there is there's less meat than there is leaves and bananas so it's a bit tougher for the lion to find the food but the lion can't win by finding the key the lion needs to wait for someone else to find the key and then if the lion has the meat when someone else breaks out the lion runs ahead and gets out first so that means that lion could have possibly just kept watching and if they know that they have that key yes then they'll be just like giving a clue to someone else like hey your item's there and it's natural yeah they could do this very tricky so that's how it works all of the characters also have uh some special abilities that will help them do things more quickly but if you want to use it you have to reveal who you are yep okay um and i think some of the other rules and some of the actions will reveal those as we come into the game so this is a quick game let's uh let's get into it that's great so i'm going to kick off i'm going to look just kind of double check i want to double check mine too i'm double checking this that's not suspicious yes there we are i did of course look at mine before we uh started the video so i'm going to look at that i am not going to take it okay great let me go with this one um i might keep this one for now okay okay useful card oh have a look at this one sorry hmm i'll keep this one all right so i'm going to start with this i'll take this one oh okay so this is uh zoe's map which is playing as zoe and so he gets revealed relatively early in the game this is uh because he always happens it's like if i don't like i don't know what are my chances that i get the second one and then i still have to find another one i could but i can i can put it back and come back to it later but i didn't i just want to yeah i mean it's three three tools you need to find so okay i'll reveal myself as zoe taker zoe which she needs to actually get the battery for the torch and then get a map to escape yes all right i don't like how things are going i rather like this card back actually i think i'm gonna uh oh i'm gonna take that card the one i looked at first situations have changed let's have a look at this the one that you looked at first yes okay decided i wanted it now that's so suspicious who are you tara i might keep this card as well okay so this is maximum two maximum two maximum two at the end of your turn so you can go above but if you end up you can hold everyone else's cards but it's going to take you a whole turn to put it back to create space for your own cards let's have a look at this one okay i'll put this one back rejected so right now we don't know who everyone is except me zoe i'm gonna call you zoe from now on stella i will put it back for now all right let's have a look here all right i um yeah i'm gonna take that one it seems like it's not really what you want but it might be handy and no you you need to stop somebody from escaping that's what it is i think that might be i think that you think so trying to think about a few sneaky ways to use it but i just want it yeah right all right joy thank you i'm just going to go with this one close to me all right now i will pop this one back interesting oh okay i have got an event oh no all players put all of their cards in hand back to the pool okay um they've uh they've almost caught us so yeah your map is fortunately not in your hand but these cards have to go oh no are they random or well i know where i know where mine are [Laughter] take them stella wait wait this is my my turn now yep which one was that was it mine were these two okay i will take it thank you i might uh joy liked her cards i might grab one of those it's pretty good card and actually actually i will play it right away i'm going to uh knock joy out for a time i feel like a good card might be the other one all right this one so that is a a skiptown card i will put this one in my head thank you very much i'll take this one i'll put it back thank you very much okay oops i will look at this one all right happy with that one tara not really i thought you had better that was skipping my turn was punishment for not so good cards i know what's going to go with you leading me on that you have good card it's a tactic we're good all right i forgot now what i want and what am i up to okay i will put this one back why is that is it something that might be useful to me maybe no no it's not there now the other the other benefit that zoe has is that no one can pick zoe's cards up so no one can keep them from her and that's part of the the trade-off of having to get through things okay yep okay i'll uh read this one and i will put it back let me go over here this one i might play this action actually steal and take a card from another person so i'm pretty sure i know what that card is so i'm going to go and take this one from you ben sorry about that just like was this an item that you really wanted you're sleeping in the sofa tonight tonight i'll keep this one me uh well look at it first look at this one first and then i will play the search search card so you get to look at two cards but not taken interesting cards okay did you anyone says saw that one oh this is so interesting okay is it very interesting no have you seen it all right i'm why is it interesting to you i feel like i'm i feel like i'm falling behind here because i haven't liked any of the cards i'm getting so i'm going to reveal who i am i am the giraffe and i want to start using my ability my ability lets me uh look if i've got exactly one card in my hand i can look at two but take none yep as an action so i'm going to look at two okay i'm going to try to hunt through this deck in here it doesn't really matter okay how were the cards tarant i didn't take any of them i wasn't able to let me have a look at this one i got two already you can play now one now or i can put one card back is that right it takes a whole action to put a card back so you would have to play one or not take this one okay then i will pop this one back here of course that's the balance to make it hard for people okay it makes it hard for people to block each other out oh interesting i think i'll uh put this one no i think bands almost win maybe so no we got two and no no okay i'm gonna play this one right for the player to put all the cards hand back to the ball but before that i will reveal myself as a monkey oh no and with the special moves i think i can block yes so by revealing that this card here the monkey moves is a once off opportunity uh for the monkey to play this as any other card and so by playing this as a reject card uh you are rejecting that action so that will still be discarded once off and um so we've gotta work hard here you may not have found the key okay um it's my turn you're still your turn because you can uh play multiple action cards as well okay i need to look at this one and anyone need to do a search straight away let's do this okay um so i read two but not um but not tank but if you find a steel or a raw you're allowed to tell us about it why is that so that we can uh play it we can take it and deal with uh with what with the benefits so what does ben need again if he's got bananas all he needs to do is find the key okay wait come on what about george she's got two cards well it's pretty clear well joy must be well that is a point joy is the uh we know joy is the lion so oh yeah we do have two situations too yes yes um having not heard anything i'm just going to look at two okay all right well considering everyone's revealed i think that's the kind of workout that i am the lion so um ben took a card that i wanted so my ability is to be able to steal one from another player but they have to have one card is that you have to have one card you have to have you have i have to have one card there's two cards i have two cards all right okay maximum one okay yes you can put one exactly remember i might need to see exactly one i'm gonna put one card back and it can go anywhere is that right yep let's put it here okay so i know that that raw card is that a steel one no that's just forced to put all cards back into the card well that that's pretty bad slows you down you know what it does yeah yeah but other people can snaffle them that's true okay well let's let's have a look at that snap or something now i can't remember what cards i want oh no let's let's do some searching okay let's go this way he's trying to make his escape i know okay the monkey the monkey almost escaping okay all right okay so who's the problem here here's the problem ben looks like he almost escaped i'm going to take one face i mean i'm going to look first i will take this one and i will play this one still steal one card from another player so is it random yes i don't get it were you happy with that card stella there's a card in there that i really want i'm happy with this cat see see how do you know there's a card there because i put it i had to put it back before and he took it i'm going to read and type yep oh read and take all right so as the lion i'm now going to use my ability because i have one car just steal a car from another player i'm sorry ben i'm gonna steal this card all right we've dealt with that terrible you two see how much fun this game is terrible twos i think we're getting gang gaffed on bigger my badly all right so i've lost my ability to look for two things unless i put a card like i need to have exactly one card in hand to do that um but i might go looking slowly because if people start stealing from me at least i've got the uh randomness that shows i'm gonna have a look okay all right i'm gonna go with a car that i think no one's looked at this one i can't remember if i've ever looked at it yet you could have told me you're gonna help me out a little bit look at this one okay i'll play i'll do this one here read one card read one card in the pool and decide whether to take it or not let's do this one well look deja vu i think well this is clearing the board up which works for the lion because once there's no ways to steal things um the lions can sit in a good position i haven't actually done it properly so i just want to create some sort of chaos as well anyway let's do this then thank more taking this one oh you're gonna no no it's not steel so mean no stealing is mean [Music] i will play this yes karen oh no and you said that card was not i said no to no oh so what does that mean rejected the rejection double rejected i've got to put mine back somebody take that somebody take that joy can't take anything because i know what you've got joy oh no where did you put yours there there up here okay i'm gonna take it i'm gonna take it pack it yes i'll take that one this one yeah thank you is it good oh sure i'll put it here it's the best car do you need this best card me [Music] that's it all right um what do i do now sorry um who's the threat now ben's looking threatening again wait i'm gonna knock you out i may have knocked the wrong person out who knows i'm sad probably no because you you took no because ben took your card maybe that's why yeah wait what did you see maybe another knockout oh no that's just not wait i just picked up another knockout so who's being knocked out probably me yeah probably stella okay tyrone doesn't have any cards oh no [Laughter] okay let's go over here well i'll take that one here's one yeah okay thank you crap i can't take it you can't take it no i can't take it i've got two okay okay wait okay okay so stella now just needs to find the uh key you find that key stella all right i will look and i'll take okay joey have i looked at this card let's look at this one okay i will put this one back the other way i'm sorry all right my tab yep now i've got all three things that i need here and i think i can escape this turn i want to announce circus break ding ding ding ding ding ding ding oh wrong yeah no all right so how this will work is stella will reveal the card if it is the key then the gate is open and if the lion has the meat then the lion's the one who uses it otherwise it elements oh yeah i think it's this one i've looked at it yeah it's the key do you have the meat stored meat oh no yeah [Music] oh you had almost everything done i've got the meat because i started from ben that's why we were just laughing and then [Music] it helps to have a diverse diet yeah there you go you shrink wraps some food some food for earlier and um enjoy the lion one so we have it that is circus break uh there is one other character that comes that you'll play with five players and that's the rabbit the rabbit is a bit more of a complicated character you can target other players with a specific card type and they have to find that sort of card or there's some some penalties there so it's the most complex of the characters oh yeah and the rabbit is of course looking for carrots and we would mix the carrots in with the cards as well the game scales down to two you don't use the lion at two you just use zoe in the giraffe but then you introduce the lion as you get up to uh three players in higher
