Once Upon a Line - Story based word puzzle - A board game preview
[Music] hi it's tarent and Stella from Maple University today we are going to do a preview video of Once Upon a line now we haven't done a lot of these so it's basically just an overview without our thoughts it's like a review about that out thoughts because this is still a prototype and it is kickstarting very soon from today and this game is by William Aubrey and Dan tuguna it's published by Pat and fracker and lucky that game in English yes in English so and we are going to start giving you the overview and oh this game is for one plus player yes so it is a it's a Cooperative narrative essentially and what we are going to do is we're going to show you the game through the tutorial so we are going to spoil the tutorial uh to a large extent but the tutorial is there to learn and I figure this is the best way to explain the game so this is a narrative Adventure that involves a scratch-off word puzzle so here we will begin with the tutorials scenario month of August is in full swing the honey Harvest has begun area is very proud of her bees they've been very prolific and just like every week the young swarmkeeper has to go to the city of Kell to deliver her honey samples to the analysis laboratory but today area is lagging behind at evening is fast approaching servant who was supposed to take over the shelter has not yet returned the journey becomes more and more perilous with each passing minute and with Nightfall comes many terrifying nocturnal insects so we've got a quest to get the city and an instruction to turn over the board and scratch off the arrow squares without using action tiles we also unlock our first character which is area plus areas skills here area can be uh gifted skillful and adroit but we'll put that to the side and show you what that means a little bit later all right so we flip this over and we scratch off these symbols well scratched turned indeed so what we know from this it shows us that we have one of the games words one of the words that's in the scenario and we know this because the word dwelling here is between two vertical lines we also know that there's a word here that ends with or starts with an e because we've got one vertical line but we can't see the other but because we have a complete story word there we grab the matching card out of the pile here flip it over and read so night will soon fall in the Valley of the Sequoias you slip on your flight suit and you're ready to go as you pass through the door honeybee strange recently and she has begun wandering farther and further from home it is very likely that she's wandered off again perhaps hiding in a wild Colony or maybe she starts off in a secret cache so what we know from this we've got three blue words on here honeybee colony and cash and we know that those words are going to appear in the Blue Zone on this map we also know because these two are underlined colony and cash that they overlap with the word dwelling and so what we're going to do is we're going to go off trying to find those words and for case it's very easy to see where it has to be we know it has to overlap with dwelling because it's on here and the only way that can happen is by ending off this e if you look up these other letters it can't go any other way so we will take an action it's going to take us for letters and so we use our four Square Tile like so right these count our actions every time we run out of action points we have to start having negative effects happen to us up here but so we're going to do that we're going to scratch off first action that we have out of four and we're going to scratch off these four and lo and behold we find cache it's from the bottom up let me just collect your rubbish tag yes now what this tells us we've got a curly bracket here and a straight bracket there so this is not a story word there's no card corresponding to Cache what this allows us to do is cross off the matching letters by the way on areas skills and when we can cross off a complete word it's going to give us some extra tiles and bonuses so we take our trusty pen we can cross off the letters c-a-c-h-e on here we don't have a lot of those letters all we can cross off is the a in a Droid and the a in gifted so that is that action complete now let's go back here we know that the other word that we may be able to find right now is colony and there's a couple of places that we could find Colony it could be off this L it could be off this cell it could be off this n so we're going to have to use some trial and error to find it we also want to use our tiles as efficiently as possible so there's a couple of things we could try to do possibly the most efficient way we know that there's three letters either side of the L so if we go off an L we probably want to use a three digit one here we might go a little bit too far we might not so I would suggest let's just try things out sure we'll try this actually no let's let's try this one here I reckon there'll be a little bit of spacing between them all right so we use that action and then we scratch up to three letters one at a time one at a time so it was here so first letter we come across an obstacle this is a stop sign so it simply means that there's no word there we have to stop our action so we've wasted a couple of letters all right now maybe let's try off the in so we know there's only one letter either side of the n on one side so maybe if we use this one it will help us to find out should we search the other side of that with a four all right so we'll do this as our third action and cross this one off here and it's just a space there's no no letter there all right so we know colony is not there nope it means we know Colony can only be on this one here so it's either going to be c-o-l-o-n-y or c-o-l-o-n-y so we've got seven points of letters left and we can do this as a as an entire action we can run a couple of these together uh either going going up then down or down then up so let's I don't think there's a truly efficient way that we can uh that we can make sure this works for us yeah but we definitely want to have at least three above and three below yeah we know that should cover it so if we run these together like so we're going three above and three below we still have to scratch them off one at a time so our only risk here is that we hit an obstacle going beyond the end of a word let's put them in the action slot so all go to one yes let's so we have to scratch out from our current words so let's go up first and then down okay we've got an O we knew that was going to happen we've got the n and we've got the Y oh that's good that's good we know we uh can't hit an obstacle Beyond and then we do three below oh C and nothing okay all right there we have it so we have found Colony it's between two straight lines and that means we get the next part of the story oh exciting which means that we're looking for a colony colony all right so um a massive wild Hive made up of thousands of cells hangs from a sequoia three Sequoia tree it's a quiet tree thank you you can hear the buzz of honeybee anything from every Alcove of the structure amongst this noise he can just make up the signature sound of hexa you will recognize her by the bracelet fastened around her leg and you will finally be able to take flight well how big is this be with that bracelet the B is the side we quickly work out through this story that we are riding these beats yes okay so once again we now know that honeybee which was a word we saw before we know that honeybee overlaps with colony and we know that bracelet is in here in blue somewhere but it doesn't overlap with colony so again now we've got a quest change we need to find the words honey bee and bracelet and that will let us move on to these locks here so we would continue searching for words in this way but uh part of this game is about managing your actions and taking good risks we are out of both actions and tiles so we need to spend our next turn refreshing so these all come back but as a penalty we have to scratch off the first DOT first box on the line of tragedy dreaded tragedy no that's was that a song I thought that was there is a song called tragedy VG song yeah there we go so this is a negative one penalty we have to cash in one of our tiles and get a smaller one get a small one so that was a and we'll go down to one because the ones can be they take a lot of actions but they can be handy in uh revealing things yes Okay so now we'll go and search for honeybee and bracelet and we'll just skip ahead a little bit to the next uh new mechanism that we see Okay so we've found honeybee and bracelet they were both power words so we've crossed off some more letters on Aries skills and as the previous card told us we now got to scratch off all of the uh clocks which has given us this green word voyage as well as take the voyage card so now we're in a different color this is one of the mechanisms of the game the map will have different colors on it and we've got a new piece of story you have found hexa climbs out of perched high in the sky the Moon grichu majestically suddenly you feel hexa Stephen as if overcome with panic a short distance away at the food of an old nut tree you spy a prostrate form you believe it to be certain your secret hearts desire Levi an imposing winged creature is giving the cool degree to the ground to the ground thank you to the young man's Beetle now more than ever you must use caution okay so once again we we know we're now looking for a nut tree and we can also tell from these letters that the only place we'll find a nut tree is off this e down the bottom but the word that we're jumping off is green not blue so before we can do that we need to spend an action leaving the Blue Zone and entering the green zone and to do that it's going to cost us another step on the line of tragedy so as things continue going we keep having more and more things getting in our way and really setting a Time on the scenario and this one here is going to remove one of our actions so now even if we have enough tokens to get there we're only going to have three actions to do what we want we've also already lost another one of our our large ones through the line of tragedy so with the nut tree we can we can basically you can't spell Nut Tree on this side there's actually only one place it can be so we can we can set that up very quickly and the optimal way to do that will be to run these through like so I believe so that's going to give us eight squares including the overlap they all go into action space number one we'll cross out this side first e and then we'll cross out in this direction not true I've got vertical lines so this is a story word here we have not a tree you crash land in front of the tree luckily certain appears to be simply unconscious your stomach drops as you recognize the green reaper The Hornet mean meters away she tears apart a little teleopter but it will soon turn towards you you know without a doubt that it will decapitate hexa and then kill you why the devil didn't servant use his saber to exterminate the Beast okay so we know that the word so we've got a new quest which is to find hornet we know that Hornet overlaps with nut tree and we know that saber is out there somewhere not overlapping with nut tree so we need to go and look for Hornet and there's a lot of different places it could be um so one option here there are restrictions on where you can place these tiles I couldn't for example just place it across here parallel to the word that I'm jumping off and try to find which where it is try to find it um that's not allowed but we do have could potentially try it here because this could be jumping off the word Voyage so Voyage would be my anchor word here but I would be spending an entire four tile I'd have to cross in this direction and if I hit another obstacle if I'd have to stop eventually penalty there are yeah there are penalty obstacles that will force you to cross off from the line of tragedy um I'll give it a I'll give it a try give it a look let's come in here so I'm going to cross in this direction off Voyage one at a time and oh no there we go we hit her the hand hit a stop sign so that is that is the end of that action now out of tiles again so I'm gonna have to go back to the line of tragedy to replenish all of these we have to unscratch one of the line of strategy yes and hopefully it's not too bad to us oh that's not too bad there's no penalty there so not all of these are going to penalize oh yeah okay now now we'll keep looking for Hornet so we're going to jump ahead again until uh until we've found hornet all right so now we've found Hornet we've taken the Hornet card and this gives us our last major mechanism and the last thing we'll show you here so this has a riddle so go for it tarent I have claws but I have no feet with me you can make a steady beat to make or break you must choose boards blocks pianos or even horseshoes from the smallest tap to Mighty Thunder there is not much I can't break asunder so this is a challenge and this uh we set aside the grid and we replace it with this challenge Gateway this is uh what's going to tell us what's going on here you can tell that this board is mine so we have to try to solve this riddle now it also tells us if we have card 18 in infantry we get to scratch off the first letter we do not have card 18 I have a feeling that might have been that saber that we were potentially able to go looking for so maybe if we go looking for the Sable we would have had an easier job at this all right so we've got a couple things we could do here we could simply take a guess see if we're right or if we're not sure we could go for some hints if we're wrong or if we get hints then we will have to cross off these question marks and these will give us some random negative effects that might be negative points to the scenario it might be more um more steps on the line of destiny tragedy tragedy great of Destiny line of tragedy yeah um what do you think what is that I was like oh that's actually a thunder but the Thunder is actually is part of the riddle so they can be summed up I think lightning doesn't fit there let's have a look at the clue number one what's behind clue number one maybe all right let's have a look at a clue let's see what these Clues are like so we cross off the first step of the clue it says nail and we get a question mark so we have to cross off a question mark of our choice and this is a dystopian point so this is a negative point for the scenario okay so the clue is nail and as I look at this I would associate a hammer with a nail and that looks like the answer to the riddle that looks like a hammer a hammer can have claws sort of a claw hammer the yeah the one with claws obviously pianos have hammers so I think it's Hammer so Fiona have hammers can be broken oh yeah yeah yeah yeah that's true all right so let's cross this out I'll scratch this out sorry Pam there you go there we go we are correct so as we're correct we now cross off this box here and it tells us which card to take next z98 let me go back to our deck said 98 and we've reached the end of the tutorial so this is the epilogue the end of our story here in a sudden burst of Bravery you jump off hexa and you Hammer yourself against the Hornet delivering a mighty blow stand by the shock the creature felters seven is slowly Reviving and seems a bit embarrassed to have been rescued by his friend his voice photos when he says he is name but there is no time for banter you help him onto the saddle and take flight towards the city of Kell just before night Falls emfs the first part of the story yes so this tells us to take the uh the new cards representing servant and um his skills and to calculate our utopian points which will be based on how well we've done in the scenario I mentioned before we lose points for this dystopian Point here and then we would go on to the prologue and then the scenarios so that is that is fundamentally the uh the game and say the previews or the prologue comes with a grid like this you'll be going much more substantially through this scenario as you can see the line of tragedy is a lot longer and then as you go on to subsequent scenarios there are much larger grids more icons there things things to do and a whole lot of challenge gateways as well for all the different scenarios that will come up this is a once through campaign as you explore the story and resolve the different riddles and word searching challenges that is Once Upon aligned it is useful to see what the game is about and then decide for yourself if you wanna back it or not and of course this gives you a hint for how the game plays as well and hopefully uh may get you past working through the tutorial yourselves indeed if
