[Music] snow is everywhere and yet here you are brave and slightly Frozen leading an expedition to find the legendary Valley of the Elders new guilds have emerged landscape is changing and I second edition with edifices and guilds expansion and today we'll be teaching you how to play the ice second edition with a sneak peek to the edifices and guilds new expansion the game is designed by Bru and Sams and published by this way and do check out the link to the project page in the video description below and hello everyone it's Stella and Taran from Maple University and hey if you enjoy this video after watching you really help us by like subscribe and let us know what you think in the comments that seriously will help us to bring more videos all right now let's get to the classroom in ice players are the leaders of archaeology guilds exploring through the valley of the elders for the Lost Civilization of Nuka players will move around to the best locations bringing with them and enlisting teams of neutral archaeologists all in the aim of Excavating lost artifacts and uncovering the lost city of aulia players will use the artifacts they collect to complete personal requests and common decrees All In Search of renown points and whoever has most Renown after 4 days play play will be the winner in this video we're showing you a prototype version of the game and so the art rules and components may not be final to set up you'll first need to assemble the multi-layer board you'll assemble the frame and at the bottom of the frame is the city of aulia separate the three tile types deep artifacts surface artifacts and snow tiles within the same stack will have different backs but the same basic color fill the bottom layer with deep artifacts fill all of the available space these tiles will not line up with the white lines underneath then likewise add the surface artifact to the next layer up and then the snow tiles on top of that ensuring this special encampment tile is among the three Central tiles make supplies of the new neutral camps and archaeologists seating the encampment tile with one of each and an archaeologist onto each tunnel tile separately makes supplies of the planning tokens Renown points and five different colors of study tokens and do note in this video we're showing you some Deluxe components if you have the retail version some components will look different make Shuffle decks of log book cards and request cards and deal out three decree cards face up returning the rest to the Box the request cards are individual objectives which players will be collecting and trying to resolve for points the decree cards are endgame scoring objectives which all players can score give each player a player board and the pieces in their color each board has an individual player power and some have specific components for that each player draws five request cards and chooses three to keep in hand discarding the other two give each player starting Renown points which will vary depending on your player board for a simpler first game there are also some modifications to this setup that you can use explained in the rule book choose a first player and you're now ready to play Ice has played over four rounds known as days and each day is played in three phases preparation exploration and end of day first is preparation and you'll skip steps two three and four of this in the first round the only thing you'll do is reset your exploration points to do this set your exploration point tracker to Five Points except that you'll go to Four Points in a five player game or six points in a two-player game then you'll move to the exploration phase this phase takes place in turns starting from the first player and going clockwise around the table on your turn you'll take actions and there are several different actions available to you each action has a cost in Exploration points to take and this cost could be as low as zero or it could be higher on your turn you must spend either one one or two exploration points that means there's no strict limit to the number of actions you can take it's just that the cost of the actions must be either one or two exploration points in total often what you'll try to do to make your turn as long as possible is take one or two actions with a single action cost as well as any number of actions with no exploration cost but you could also choose to play Slowly prioritizing taking more turns over taking more actions in a single turn you also have the option to overwork on your turn to do this you spend one Renown point and this allows you to spend three exploration points on this turn instead of two and to be clear this doesn't give you an extra exploration point you still have to spend from your track it's just that you can spend an extra one above two on this turn to take advantage of something tactic favorable in this moment after you finished taking actions on the turn when your exploration points are reduced to zero that player now passes out of the current day and immediately resolves their end of day phase before the next player's turn that player resolves the three steps of end of day and is then skipped in the turn order for the rest of this day once all players have finished end of day you'll move to the next preparation phase so now let's look at all the different available actions the first action is to build a camp and this costs one exploration point take either your own camp or one of the white neutral camps which is not already on the board Place The Chosen camp on any fully uncovered tile which does not already contain a camp that can be on any layer so it means that all of these partial tiles are not available but this one is then Place Your Leader on or move your leader to that tile so for your first action that will bring your leader into play while red could choose to take this action putting the neutral Camp here and moving the leader straight to that space the second action is call and this costs one exploration point this gives you two options options you can take a new archaeologist from the supply and place it onto a tile with any camp or you can place your leader on or move your leader to any tile with a camp for this action you can use your own camps neutral camps or opponent's camps the third action is move and this costs one exploration Point moving allows you to move your own leader one space and bring up to three archaeologists with them the space is any individual tile or section of a layer delineated by these white lines and moving one space means moving to one which shares a complete Edge so the blue leader move could be to any one of these six spaces and by bringing one two or three archaeologists along for the ride could move like so Rifts on snow tiles block the two edges there on and the edge of the map is also blocked for movement on the snow layer that means right now black could move only to one of these two spaces on the surface and deep artifact layers there are spaces which are pre-printed into the frame and these do count as individual spaces so from here green could move to one of these four spaces while pale blue could move to one of these six spaces being limited to moving with three archaeologists one would have to be left behind the spaces on the bottom aulia City layer of the board come in irregular shapes and right here red occupies this space and could move to any one of these five movement itself is relatively slow around the map but when you combine it with the Hall and build a camp actions you'll be able to cover a good amount of distance however to make sure distance is covered in a game with lower player count there is a movement variant called fluent movement if you're playing the three player game you may choose to give each player one fluent movement per round while if you're playing two players you must give each player two fluent movement per round when you spend fluence movement you still spend only one exploration point but you may move two spaces instead of one when doing this you can pick up and drop off archaeologists along your route all of the positional actions we've spoken about are largely to get you set up to take the core action excavate this is the action that's going to let you collect tiles from the map the cost to excavate is going to depend on which time tile you're Excavating and some of the positionings around that tile and as you can see some of what contributes to the cost of a tile goes well in excess of the two exploration points you're allowed to spend that means you're going to need to lean on these cost reductions to legally take the action you will always be attempting to excavate the tile where your leader is located and to be valid the tile must be either completely uncovered or partially covered but only by a single other tile that means all four of these leaders are standing on valid tiles while the red leader is not the red Leader's tile is obscured by two others the basic exploration Point cost to excavate is two points for a snow tile three points for a surface artifact or four points for a deep artifact this is in increase by a further one exploration point if any one or more of the following three things is true these are if the tile you're Excavating has a camp on it if the tile your Excavating is partially covered or if the tile you're Excavating is a Nar tile which shows these Rocky outcrops so Green's excavation would cost 2 points Black's is 3 + 1 one because the tile is partially covered dark Blues is 3 + 1 because of both the camp and the fact that it's partially covered and light Blue's cost is four then each meeple on the space reduces the cost by one that means your leaders opponent's leaders or the archaeologists so the final cost for green to excavate is 2 - 2 for 0 points black can also excavate for 4 - 4 0 points light Blue's cost is 4 - 2 so this would cost two exploration points while dark Blue's cost is 4 - one a cost of three that means to even legally be allowed to excavate blue would need to spend a Renown point to take the overwork bonus allowing those three points to be spent on the same turn now resolve the excavation on the board if you are digging a partially covered tile first deal with the tile which was overlapping it any pieces which were on that tile are removed from the board and returned to their reserves if you lose a leader or a camp that way you'll need to take the build or call Action to get them back on the board then discard the overlapping tile to the discard bag next take the tile that you're Excavating if it was an artifact whether surface or deep place it face up on its matching slot of your board if it was a snow tile add it to your face down hand of snow tiles now distribute all the maples who were on the excavated tile you choose how they're distributed within the restrictions of the placement rule which states that once you're done all of the pieces must be as evenly distributed among the uncovered tiles as possible and that includes any pieces who were already there that means of the four pieces that I've got here I would have to distribute them in such a way so that the final numbers were 2 two and one likewise if the pale blue player were to excavate here both Maples would need to be placed here as this evenly distributes all the maples between the two spaces that were partially uncovered if you excavate a tile with a camp on it place the maples following the placement rule but then place the camp on any exposed tile of your choice as long as there isn't already a camp present however you're not allowed to place a camp on an edge space in this case these two spots are not allowed the camp would have to go here and camps are not allowed to go on the aulia layer of the board after this excavation the camp would have to be returned to its owner's Supply if when you excavate you finish the excavation of a full space from the aulia layer immediately gain one Renown Point as a reward finally if after an excavation there are any tiles which border only a single other tile on its layer that tile collapses it is discarded to the bag and any pieces on it are returned to the supply this applies only to non border tiles a border tile never collapses through Excavating you'll collect artifacts and snow tiles the majority of your points are going to come from collecting artifacts but both artifacts and snow tiles allow you to take the next action effect and ability this costs either zero or one exploration points depending on what the effect or ability is each of the snow tiles you collect will have some sort of effect printed on the reverse side and as an action you can discard the tile to the bag to take that effect for your artifacts each of the five artifact colors has a specific effect associated with it and you may take each effect at most one once per day as long as the total Ana value of your artifact of that color is at least two Ana is represented by these dots you get one for a surface artifact or two for a deep artifact right now this player could take the green artifact effect and the blue artifact effect and to take that effect flip the entire stack of those artifacts face down each effect is strictly once per round even if I gained another two anima value I would have to place that face down in this round flipping the whole stack face up again at the start of the next round for another single use for both snow tile and artifact effects the cost is zero exploration points unless otherwise stated you can also use the effect and ability action to take the ability on your guild board the next action is study and this costs one exploration Point check the artifact on the tile where your leader is currently standing and take the matching study token adding it to your board you can have at most one of each type of study token these count one anima towards activating an artifacts effect so now I have two anima and can activate the red artifact the final action is plan spend one exploration point to gain one planning token you can do this once per day and you must spend this token at the start of the next day to gain an extra exploration Point effectively this means you're holding over one of this round's exploration points to get an extra one next round this action is not available in the two-player game on the turn when you spend your last exploration point you will finish your turn by resolving your endof day phase if you the first player to do this draw face up a display of request cards equal to two more than the number of players in the game you may optionally add one of these to your hand all players who subsequently pass choose from those which remain next you may load artifacts to your ship's hold followed by optionally validating any number of requests from your hand to understand the implications of this we need to understand a little bit more about how final scoring will work we've seen how building up artifacts on your player board will give you theime that you need to resolve those artifacts effects however artifacts on your player board will never score you can't use them to complete request cards nor will they score the objectives on decree cards to to score an artifact it must be loaded to your ship's hold that means there's an incentive to get as many of these tiles to your hold as possible but to do it as late as possible however the game restricts your ability to do this you can put at most two artifacts in your hole in round one three in rounds two and three and four in round four as such if you don't keep the artifacts moving out then you won't maximize your ability to score them at the end of the game to move artifacts to your hold simply take those artifacts whether they're face up or face down and place them in the hold area now optionally validate requests from your hand if you do this flip the card face up and commit the required artifacts from your hold to the card this one for example requires two differently colored artifacts among those three colors once an artifact has been committed to a request it cannot be reassigned it remains there for the rest of the game through final scoring and that is when the printed score is gained you do not collect Renown points immediately so on one hand the best way to get the most points out of your request cards might be to hold all of these tiles in your ship's hold and then assign them in a fully optimized way at the very end of the game but if you do validate a request early that is in rounds 1 2 or three you gain a bonus of one Renown point and this will be in addition to the cards end of game victory points and you're not allowed to hold more than four incomplete cards in hand at the end of each round if you're holding five or more then you must discard down to four and lose one Renown point for each card you thusly discard once everyone's resolved end of day proceed to the next rounds preparation phase players reset to their full exploration points adding another one if they gained a planning token reset all of your artifacts flipping them back over to their active sides as well as resetting any player Powers which are supposed to reset the first player marker is past one step clockwise and finally draw and resolve a log book card most of these are some sort of partial reset often putting new neutral pieces or allowing a reorganization of the board you'll now again proceed with the exploration phase we've already seen that artifacts come in five different colors which you can see from the backs of the tiles and that they come in two different Ana strengths one and two which will depend on their depth artifacts also have a shape and this is shown by this icon on the left and each artifact will be one-sided two-sided or three-sided you won't know what you've got until you've drawn it shape has no impact on game playay or actions but you'll require certain sets of shapes to score some of the cards the board also contains several of these multicolored artifacts known as Prismatic artifacts these count as a wild color when you gain one you choose which color you're going to allocate it to and it counts towards your anima total for activating that type of artifact while it's on your player board then as part of your preparation phase when reactivating all of your artifacts you can also choose to reallocate any prismatics to different Stacks at that time and once you load a prismatic during the end of day phase you can choose another color again when using it to validate a request you are not allowed to take the study action when you're on a prismatic tile it also pays to understand the different types of request cards you'll come across this one simply requires differently colored artifacts of any shape or anima these ones require a total of three anima in the color or color mix shown here you'd spend matching colored artifacts in a set of different shapes this scores from two anas worth of prismatics and this requires a single artifact of two anima in the matching color take clear note of these differences this is two anima inside and oval they have to come from a single artifact while these ones can be the amalgamation of multiple artifacts after the fourth round of the game is over in your end of day phase you will have put up to four artifacts into your hold you also now load all of your study tokens to your hold and for final scoring these count as though they are an artifact of that color with one anima and no shape tiles still on your player board are discarded they will not score and you can set your player board aside as well now go through end of game scoring and you'll tally this on the score pad rather than collecting further Renown tokens first from the request cards remaining in hand score as many of them as you can you do not gain the one Renown Point bonus you would have gained during the game here I could assign these these differently shaped greens and these prismatics to score these three requests but have nowhere to assign these tiles and nothing to complete this request score the printed points on all your completed requests and lose one point for each request you've failed to validate now compare all of the tiles you have again the ones you've used to validate requests or the ones which remain unused and using them score as many points as you can from the three common decree objectives do note there are some decrees which don't relate specifically to artifacts and that you cannot use prismatics as Wilds for the purposes of decrees note the points for the three decrees and then finally add the points from any renowned tokens you've collected the player with the highest score wins and if tied Victory is shared the basic game of ice comes with a couple of variant and we've already seen a few of those including the easier setup and the fluent move variant the base game also comes with the expert mode which uses the nuka's curse board to make the game more difficult as it proceeds to set up each player places their second Point marker on the space corresponding to your Play account and then distributes the curse tokens light ones at the start of the track and dark ones at the back on different spaces based on your Play account and all of them flipped over to their starting sides at the very start of the game it's easier to use your artifact effects as you'll be allowed to flip them when you have only one anima in that artifact however every time you excavate an artifact tile before you distribute the maples on the space below you advance one step on the curse track once you enter a space containing a curse token which you don't have you must take that curse and apply it ongoing your first light curse means that now you're back to requiring two anima to activate an artifact once you've reached space seven you flip that token over and now in addition to needing twoa you can also only bring two archaeologists with you instead of three when moving once you reach the dark curses the animac cost goes up to three and once you reach step 14 the number of archaeologists you can bring with you is also reduced to one you can also add the further gentle variant to this rule where whichever player or players are coming last on the curse track takes a study token for free as part of the preparation phase the edifices and Guild's expansion to ice comes with three new features for you to enjoy the game first among them are the two new Guild boards the enlightened and The Alchemist including all their required colored pieces these allow you still to play the game at up to five players but gives you more variety of player powers that you can use the second new feature is the guild favors board once per turn you can spend a Renown Point token from your supply to use any one of these seven effects it doesn't matter which player guilds are in the game or who's playing as which Guild you can all always do this to use any one of these seven effects players gain an extra two Renown Point tokens on top of those available with their guild at the start of the game to give them a few more opportunities to use these effects but just remember that there aren't that many ways to gain these tokens during the game favors offers some special tactical advantages on the board such as moving camps archaeologists or placing down a smile of which blocks a hex from all players for the rest of the turn there are also some allowing you to manipulate artifacts or request cards the board also comes with these handy slots where you can insert the decree cards lastly is the edifices which allows you to play the game over a multi-episode campaign each of the scenarios is characterized by a specific edifice card Each of which has a new and special rule which applies to all players throughout this scenario there'll also be different snow tile setups which you'll need to respect and this will give you different flavors to the exploration in each game each new game you play will give you new choices of where to explore next as you explore through all of the different edifices available with the game this will include pieces like the Sentry worm who is moved around by the choices of all players at the start of each round scattering explorers to give you a new Tactical way of setting up the board before ultimately blocking out the final tile that lands on thanks for watching and if you like this video maybe you'd like to watch this next one have a great day bye
