The Girl Who Made the Stars Board Game - How to Play
oh hello it's Stella and tarant here from Maple University today we'll be teaching you how to play the girl who made the Stars game designed by John Schultz and published by final frontier games let's get to the game part of final frontier games Pillars of Creation series the girl who made the stars is set in the San African myth of the creation of the constellations and the Milky Way one evening a young girl frustrated by her villager's inability to safely go foraging at night picked up some wood ash from The Hearth and blew it into the sky creating the Stars and thus lighting the paths for safe foraging during the game players will build up star clusters on their own personal boards to generate three different colors of light collect wood ash tokens from The Hearth to create extra light and ongoing bonuses and spend their light to light up the paths forage for food and animals and offer them up for points the game plays over five rounds and the player who scores the most points will win to set up the main board you'll seat it with various types of tiles on each foraging space create a stack of the matching resources equal in height to the number of players in the game add fewer than four players return any leftovers to the Box at the bottom of the board Shuffle the eight offering tiles and create a stack of five one for each round at the top of the board create the semi-randomized piles of bonus tokens you'll randomly take four bonus tokens per player in the game returning any leftovers to the Box sort them from highest to lowest and then stack them from highest to lowest in piles equal to the number of players in the game from left to right across the top of the board each player takes a player board and then all of these components four workers an elder and a scoring Market in your color a 50 point marker and a complete set of 38 hexagonal star tiles and four of these trihex constellation tiles each player will have an identical complete set of the same tiles place the star tiles into the cloth bag of your color and randomly place your constellation tiles onto these four matching shaped spaces the side showing the lightning bolt or the worker placement Circle should be flipped face down three of your workers go on the three leftmost spaces here at the top of your board and the fourth is placed on the one plus worker constellation tile you can unlock this later take one of each color of light as starting resources place all players score markers at zero assemble and place the gazing board which includes this randomizing Tower place the green girl who made the Stars maple on this space which shows her silhouette she serves as the game's round marker then randomize the order of all players elders and place them on the four steps behind her this will be the starting turn order add all of the brown wood ash tokens to the Brown Bag you'll be using these on the gazing board through the game keep the leftover light and stardust tokens nearby ready for use you're now ready to play the girl who made the stars is played in five rounds and each round is played in four phases first is the stargazing phase you'll drop wood ash into the tower and in turn Order each player will draft one of these tokens second is star tile placement players will draw Five Star tiles from their bags and then assemble them on their player boards trying to earn light and stardust third is the worker phase players take it in turns moving a worker to an action space and then spend their light and resources on point scoring actions and then you'll complete a cleanup phase in preparation for the next round so now let's have a look at each phase in detail the first phase is the stargazing phase and this involves the gazing board to begin one player takes a number of wood ash tokens out of the bag equal to one more than the number of players in the game then drop those tokens into the tower now starting from who's ever Elder meeple is immediately behind the girl and proceeding clockwise each player will take one turn to draft a wood ash tile from the board when it's your turn you'll choose a token and you'll gain one light and the light must match one of the colors where that token lies this token is on the line between green and red so you'd need to take either a green or red light the central circle is wild so you could take any one of the three light colors for one of these two tokens once you've made your choices add the light to your resource pool and add the wood ash token to the collection at the bottom of your player board the tokens you collect have special abilities printed on them and will remain here throughout the game meaning across five rounds you'll build up five special abilities as part of your engine building for each of these tiles the top half shows you the condition and effect of that tile and the lower half is an icon which tells you which action or phase the reward corresponds to I'll cover what each of these does when we reach the corresponding actional phase some of the wood ash tiles have this white light icon showing on it when you choose one of these tiles you must also immediately choose what color of light that tile is going to correspond to for the entire game the color you choose must match one of the colors from where you took the tile off the board but it doesn't have to match the color of light you gain to your supply on this turn once all players have had their turn there will be one tile remaining leave that in place so you know what it is and which region it landed in this may come into play in later phases the second phase is star tile placement all players can carry out this phase simultaneously to begin players draw Five Star tiles from their bags you must now place all of these onto your player board each tile is double-sided on one side you'll have one of the three colors of light with either three or four light paths or a brown star which doesn't correspond to any color of light with two parts every tile has the same reverse side a brown star with a single path a new tile when it is placed may be placed into any empty space on your board it doesn't need to be adjacent to any other tile any paths on the tile must connect either to another path of any color or to an empty hex this placement would be illegal because a path enters another filled hex and this placement would be illegal because the path goes off your map when you legally place a non-brown star Place one light of the matching color on that star note that you do not own this light unlike the light in your supply you cannot spend it to take actions it's simply there for you to unlock and gain later after each time you've placed the tile make the following three checks firstly check whether you have completed a loop out of paths in any shape here for example this placement created a triangle Loop and a diamond Loop for each Loop you create gain one Stardust token from the supply secondly check to see if all of the paths on any individual star tile are now complete here for example this tile when placed was placed in such a way that it has no open paths any longer for any such star tile take its light token and add it to your collection likewise if I were to place this tile here I would unlock the blue light on this star tile finally check to see whether there are any stars remaining in the entire connected cluster which have any open paths here you can see that these 10 stars are all connected to each other and all the paths are closed this is called a completed star cluster this grants you two bonuses firstly count up the number of non-brown stars in that completed cluster here it's five find the corresponding bonus pile at the top of the main board this is the five star stack then gain the number of victory points on the top token and if the token is still on its dark side then flip it over to its Light Side it's still worth the same number of points but this reminds you to remove it from the stack at the end of this round secondly if the stars in this cluster are adjacent to one or more of your constellation tiles then you get to activate those tiles each of these gives you a one-soft benefit when you activate this one gain one light of each color and then discard the token for all of the others simply flip the token over this will reveal a worker placement space which you'll be able to use on a future worker phase you'll gain further bonuses if you have a wood ash token with the completed cluster icon this one gives you a point for each of your selected light color in that cluster and this one gives you three points for each set of three different light in the cluster you can also use Stardust from your supply to help you build up your map you'll often do that during this phase but can do it during any phase of the game at any time you can place a number of Stardust from your supplier onto a hex that matches the number of open paths leading to that hex typically you'll stack these on top of each other Stardust closes paths for the purposes of gaining light from Star tiles as well as for completing star clusters this is now a three colored star cluster which is complete and earns this constellation bonus however it is not considered to close a loop for the purposes of gaining more Stardust it also means this space is no longer empty you're not allowed to place a tile with an open path pointing into that hex and you're not allowed to come back and add more Stardust later to try to make that possible if however all of these tiles were present before the Stardust were placed it would be legal to place all three of these Stardust at once note that this does not link these two potential star clusters together these are two separate clusters which end at the same Stardust containing space this phase ends once all players have placed their five star tiles if you have one of these two wood ash tiles you'll draw an extra star tile at the start of this phase but you'll still Place only five returning the leftover to your bag you also gain one light of this color or one Stardust third is the place workers phase players will take turns one at a time in turn order to take one worker from the player board and then place it onto a worker placement space to resolve its action this phase continues until all players are out of workers there are five different actions Paths of light gather resources offering gazing and a constellation action for Paths of light place a worker here any number of workers May occupy the space then place any amount of light from your supply onto the parts each light Place must be either on one of the two starting spaces or adjacent to a light that has previously been placed note that the two halves of the board are completely separate these two do not have adjacency through this foraging space each light Place must be a different color to the one which preceded it you could not Place Green in either of these spaces you would need to place another color you can freely Place light on different Forks of the same path or even opposite sides of the board with the same action once you're done count up the number of light you placed then score the points on top of the stack which corresponds to that number of stars so here six points as before if it's on its dark side flip the token over to its Light Side if you hold any Paths of light or Dash tokens you'll also gain extra points for the types of light you've placed the second action is gather resources choose a gathering location which has at least one tile remaining on it and is connected to the start by a fully lit path here these three locations are possible place a worker into its action space any number of workers May occupy such a space you must pay the main light costs for this gather here it's a green a red and a white light which can be paid with any color you then gain a token from that Gathering stack you can then optionally pay the right hand side of the cost here it's one blue light to gain the additional reward which will be victory points or Stardust gathered resources go to your supply and if you have a gathering wood ash token which matches what you gathered you gain some extra points third action is to make an offering any number of workers can occupy this space here you'll convert your gathered resources into points in two ways firstly count the number of different resources that you've gathered and gain one point for each type without spending them here you gain three points if you have any wood ash tokens with the crossed offering icon these different resources count towards your reward here you'd now have the maximum offering of Four Points then you must give up one of your resources to the offering tile and you cannot use the ones from your wood ash tiles this is what the crossed out hands are intended to mean take your chosen tile cover the top most open matching space on this round's offering tile and gain the victory points you cover if you don't hold at least one resource which can be placed onto an empty space of this tile you are not allowed to take the action fourth action is gazing and each player has a dedicated gazing action space on their player board only one worker can occupy this at a time when you guys gain the benefits from your uncovered worker placement spaces this means you'll get more rewards by doing this later in the round rather than earlier in this case you would gain three Stardust and one light whose color is based on the location of the leftover wood ash token on the gazing board if you have any gazing wood ash tokens also gain the light and stardust showing on that the last type of action is one of the ones on an activated constellation tile each is a once per game effect when you activate the plus worker action gain the fourth worker to your supply when you use the recall 2 tile bring any two of your workers back to your player board to be used again later this round and when you use the score again action choose one of your completed star clusters and then score it again in the usual way here again I would count that I have five colored Stars and would score based on the current value of that sort of cluster you do not get to re-score any wood ash bonuses as part of this action once all players are out of workers proceed to the cleanup phase Advance the girl meeple one step around the board and then whoever was last in turn order jumps ahead to be first in turn order next round the leftover wood ash token is returned to the wood ash bag players recall their workers to their player boards and if a constellation action was used when recalling that worker discard the tile remove any bonus tokens which have been flipped to their Light Side from the game and discard the top offering tile as well as any resources on it you'll now proceed to the next round when the girl has no further to move the fifth round is over and the game is complete players have one last chance to use Stardust from their suppliers to complete constellations on their Maps which may gain them extra light and points from the main board any leftover gathered resources are cashed in for the number of victory points showing on the bottom row for that type of resource in this case 2 4 and 3 for a total of nine the player with the highest score wins if tired Whoever has the most combined leftover light and stardust breaks the tie and if still tied Victory is shared and that's how to play the girl who made the Stars we hope you enjoyed this video I think thank you so much for watching everything you do will help
