Wizards of the Grimoire: Shifting Sands - Teach & Playthrough
Hi everyone, my name is Monique and I'm Naveen from Before You Play. And today we're gonna be doing a two-player playthrough of a game called The Wizards of the Grimoire: Shifting Sands. Yes, this game is designed by both Cole and Joe Banning and published by Grimoire Games, who are helping sponsor this playthrough.
Now, this is a two-player wizard dueling game where we're going to be trying to cast spells, deploy our mana on those spells to activate them so that we can defeat our opponent and take him down to zero health. Yes, like Nina was mentioning, this is a two-player card- driven dueling game with rules for a three-player mode that is actually an expansion, a standalone expansion to the original game called the Wizards of the Grim War.
This version of the game includes 70 new spells as well as a new spell type called Relics. And so today, as per usual, we are going to start with a quick teach of the game and we'll go straight into a two-player playthrough. If you'd like to jump around, we'll include timestamps in the description below.
Now, Mon'nique and I have actually covered the first game uh that came out about two years ago. us if you are interested in watching our other playthrough of this which I think we launched back in June of 2023. We'll leave a link up here. Uh if you can all do us a big favor as well and turn on your cling on subtitles just in case you make any mistakes, we can add those corrections there.
If we discover anything big, we can also add it to a pinned comment. And lastly, if you like these kind of videos and you want to see more in the future, please consider subscribing. And with that, we are ready to begin. So, if you please direct your attention to the center of the table, we're all set up here for a two-player game of the Wizards of the Grimmoire, Shifting Sands.
Welcome to the Dueling Ground. There it is. Now, if you've never played this game before, like we're mentioning, this is a dueling card game where each player will start the game with 60 health, and your goal is just to deplete your opponent's health to zero. As soon as one player is able to do that, then they win the game.
As for the gameplay itself, it's actually quite simple. The game comes with two different decks of cards. We have spell cards, which is all of these cards that you see here, both in the display as well as in both players starting repertoire. And we also have a deck of mana cards, which are basically going to be power values from 1 to four that we're going to be using in order to cast these spells.
So, if you are familiar with the original game, this game flow is basically the same as well as the rule set. That's right. You'll just see new types of cards. And so generally the way that the game works is starting with the first player, players will be taking turns gaining new spells, gaining mana, and then casting spells, and performing a basic attack.
Now, you'll always start your turn by taking a new spell from the display, unless you already have six spells that are completely filled with mana, which we'll talk about later. And in this game, there are three main types of spells. We have attack spells with the red circle at the top leftand corner that allow you to deal damage to your opponent.
We also have regeneration spells, which are green, and these allow you to gain more mana. And there are utility spells, which have a purple circle, and these allow you to sort of break the rules of the game or allow you to manipulate mana. Now, when gaining a new spell, you're going to add it to your line of spells that are in your repertoire.
And you always refill the display so that there are always 10 that are available. And on your turn, you'll also gain three Mona cards from the deck. So, mono cards look like this. They are kept secret in your hand so that your opponent does not know their values unless there's a card that requires you to reveal them or so.
And they range in value from one to four. Now, the value is only going to be significant uh when cards refer to them or at the end of your turn when you can perform a basic attack, which you'll see. But just so you know, the most abundant of all the mana cards are going to be the ones obviously, and the fours are the most rare by a long shot.
Then after gating your mana, you can then cast spells. And the way that casting spells works is each card shows a number of mana cards that you need to place on top of the card in order to cast it. So to cast this fever dream, Monique would have to play two cards. Or to cast this exchange life, she'd have to play three cards on top.
That's right. And depending on the type of spell, some spells will activate immediately. Some spells have ongoing effects, such as the ones with a rotating arrow symbol. And some spells that showcase the right pointing arrow will only activate each time you discard a Mona card off of it. Yeah, they're considered delayed.
So, since I only have three mana cards in my hand, I would have to basically choose between casting either spell. And when doing so, you would literally place the cards on top of the card because it does not matter what the value of the mana is on these cards. It's just the quantity of mana cards that you're placing on top.
And so, now that I've cast my Feverdream spell, this has an ongoing ability that says, "Whenever you add a spell to your spell repertoire, you deal two damage." So, this is not going to actually come into effect now. This is something that happens at the start of my turns and this will basically be in play until all of the mana has been removed.
Now, at the start of your turn after gaining a new spell, one step that I skipped is you'll also have a cooldown step that requires you to discard one mana card off of each of your spells. This is important because you can only cast spells that do not have mana on it, which means it's going to take me two turns before I can recast feverdream.
Now, depending on the card, this could be a good thing. So with Feverdream, I want to keep monocards on top of it because it keeps the effect in play. But other cards such as this exchange life card that has an immediate effect, I would want to remove monocards off of it as quickly as possible so that I could recast the spell.
Like we're mentioning, there are a total of 70 new cards and they are all unique. So there are a lot of different uh effects and combinations that you can put together, but we'll explain them as we play the game. Now the other thing is specifically in the shifting sands expansion is there is a new type of spell called relics and they have this sort of broken card symbol in the top lefthand corner.
These spells are gained just like normal. However, when you choose to cast the spell instead of placing the monocards on top of it, you're actually going to discard those monocards. Cast the spell and then the spell itself gets technically destroyed, but you would go ahead and just discard it. So these are basically a one-time use.
Very powerful spell. As an example, Mask of the Beast here says your opponent must discard their hand. So, if you see your opponent acquiring a lot of Mona cards, maybe they're saving up a lot. You can cast this uh relic to make them discard it all. Yeah, that's not good. This silencing amulet here says destroy a spell.
After the spell is destroyed, the owner of the spell replaces it. So, if Monnique has like a really powerful spell that I'm kind of sick of, if I deploy this, then I can force her to get rid of it. That's kind of nice. And so we'll be seeing these relic cards over the course of the game as well, and we'll explain them as we play.
Sure. Now, the last thing is at the end of your turn, you can always end by optionally taking a basic attack by playing a mono card from your hand. And this is when the value of the mona card matters. So when you take a basic attack, you basically discard a monocard, and you deal damage equal to its value.
So in this case, I would be dealing my opponent three damage. And today, we're going to be using the app uh to keep track of our health. But if you don't prefer to use that, the game also comes with health trackers that you can use instead. But that's essentially it. Anything else we didn't go over, we'll just discuss as we play the game.
But for now, we're going to go ahead and get cleaned up and we'll get started with our play through. Okay, we are all set up. We are ready to go. Now, we have to figure out who's going to be the first and second player because there's a little bit of setup. Mhm. Odds or evens? Uh, I'll go odds. One, two, three.
Even player one, which means during this opening phase, I will first choose a spell. Then Naveen will choose one. I'll choose a second one and then Naveen will start the game. Okay. And today Mon'nique will be playing below the market and I will be playing above the market. Yes. Which means we probably have to rotate this.
Oh yeah, there's words on it. I am player one and Naveen is player two. So I'm going to go ahead and start by taking the multiply spell. This is an attack type with an ongoing benefit. That's basically says as long as this spell has exactly three mana cards on it, which is the required cost, your basic attack damage is doubled.
So So she's holding a four and there's three on this. and I'm in trouble. Buckle up, Naven. Oh, we have a relic. This is Frozen Goblet. Your opponent gains only one mana at the start of their next turn. Okay. As opposed to three mana, right? Well, this is early enough in the game, so I'm going to go ahead and take the Death Spiral.
This one says, "Each time you discard off of this spell, deal one damage for each mana card remaining on it." Yeah, I debated that one. So, in order to activate it, I would have to put four mana cards on top of it. M uh and then every time I pluck one off at the start of my cool down phase at the beginning of a turn, I would deal one minus how many are remaining there.
So, uh that's pretty good for each mana card. Oh, sorry. Because I I would remove one. So, it's one minus from the ones that were there. Six six damage over the course of several rounds. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So, I'm going to take it. Yeah. Let's do it. Very very nice. All right. So, this gets replaced and I'm going to take my second spell.
And because my multiply spell is quite expensive, I think I need to go for a spell that gains me mana, which is typically going to be the green circles. Um, and I'm looking here at Song of Shadows. This says, "Gain five mana. Give your opponent one mana card of your choice from the discard pile." So, that's kind of nice.
I'm going to go ahead and just take that. All right. So, now that I have taken two spells, Naveen will start the game, but he will also start by taking a new spell. And the new spell we have here is another mana regenerating one. This is split soul. It says, "Choose one, gain four mana or discard a mana card off of two of your other spells." Oh, that's nice.
It's a bit versatile. I'll take it. I was I sold you on it. Well, it's cuz this in order to cast this spell, it needs four mana, but I'm only going to be able to draw three mana. Yeah. So, I'm going to need something to make this happen. So, I want to get this going multiple times throughout the course of the game.
Okay. You'll take this? Yep. I'll take it. All right. So, I'm just going to place it here. Sure. Thank you. Okay. We have a new spell. Yeah. And then I draw three more. is revelation. Reveal the top mana on one of your spells and gain a quantity of mana equal to its power. Ooh, that's nice. You have to remember what cards you're placing on top of Yes.
your spells. Okay, so technically there would be a cool down phase, but we're skipping that because it's the first technically turn of the game. And now Naveen drew three mana cards. So, uh it is spell casting time. Time to cast spells, you say. Okay. Well, uh I definitely want to cast the uh split soul, the one that I just picked up.
So that's going to cost me two mana cards. Now the value on the cards does not matter here, right? Unless you have a card that's like one. Yeah, the one that we just said. So two cards. They're going to go right on top of this. So now I have instantly cast this, right? Cuz it has the down arrow. So this instantly effect happens.
It's going to stagger it so that we know how much mana is on it. Yeah. So this one again, it says I can choose one, gain four mana or discard a mana card off of two of your other spells. I'm not doing that. And that's of your other spells. So you could not discard. So clearly I'm not doing that. So I will take four mana.
Four mana. One, two, three, and four. Unfortunately, this one needs mana. All right. So I have my four mana. So I'm going to continue casting spells. You can cast as many as uh legally possible. Yep. And I'm going to put these four cards right on that death spiral. Ah, there we are. The spiral begins.
You're like a You're like a an alligator. Is it an alligator or a crocodile? Oh, they do the death spiral. The death spin. Spin. Yeah. All right. All right. So, now I'm going to do a basic attack. Okay. This is a good one. Four. Oh, these are rare. These are rare. There's only like six in the deck, maybe.
All right. So, this gets discarded into the mono discard pile. I'm going to take my first damage. It's going to be minus four health. Yeah. Then I'm at 56 and Navine is at 60 pristine. And but that ends your turn. That ends my turn. So, I would love for you to activate Song of Shadows, which says you gain five mana, but give your opponent one mana card from the discard pool.
I hate it. I won't do it. Be fantastic. I'm going to refuse. Well, let's see. I do start by taking a new spell. I'm gonna go with another attack card. This is bloodthirst. Look at that. This is truly a bloodthirsty. It is an attack card with a delayed power. So, this says each time you discard a mana off of this spell, deal three damage minus the highest power mana in your hand.
So, I am taking some risks here. So the goal for you is when you go to remove the one mana that would be on here, you would have no cards in your hand cuz it would be three minus zero. That's true. That is true. So you want to have a depleted hand. Yeah. Yeah, that's a good point. All right, so we get a new spell in the display.
This is Cyclone. Deal three damage. You may move a monocard between two of your other spells. Oh no, so good for me. I know the timing is so bad because I could put that on top of this and then it'll be more stacked and as I pull it'll be more more damage. Oh, that stinks. All right. So, I'm going to get some mana.
Three mana. So, one, two, three. Yep. And let's see what these are first. All right. I'm going to first cast Song of Shadows. So, it's two mana cards. That is the cost here. Oh, so you are going to do it. I'm picking up this one. Yeah, you're going to pick that up. It's still worth it for me to be able to cast multiple of these because it's it costs a total of six cards, you know.
So, instant. Let's resolve this cuz it's instant. So, gain five mana. Gain five mana. One, two, three, four, five. And then it says, "Give your opponent one mana card of your choice." It's the only one there. Naveen gamed it. He knew. He knew what I was going to do. But there you go. At least I have this super strong ability here called multiply.
So three mana cards are going to go on top of this card. And now, as long as these cards, the thing is I can only use this once every like three turns, right? Because it has to, this spell has to have exactly three mana cards on it. And if so, then your basic attack damage is doubled. So, for the next two turns, I won't be able to use it at all.
That's where the combos kind of come in because some cards will say move mana around and you can force three cards on it so that you can constantly be tapping it. Yes. And I know I just took this card, but as tempting as it is to cast this spell, I think I'm going to hold off. Oh, I can cast this spell every turn.
So, it's not like it's a total waste. I just don't want to waste the mana on it right now if I don't have the proper hand configuration for it to really make its mark. All right. So, I'm going to end that phase and I'm going to go into my basic attack in which I will Oh, you have your own four. You four damage times two because multiply multiply.
That's bad. So, that's eight. So, go ahead and discard this, please. Better than the four. Let me help you. Four. Yeah. So, 52 to 56. All right, Naveen, back to you. Yeah. Well, so, uh, now I'm going to choose a new spell and then we will show you that that cool down. Oh, yes. The cyclone. This is the one that I definitely wanted.
It's one you identified. That's the one. Yeah. So, this is going to be a deal three when I activate it, deal three damage, and then you may move the mona cards between two of my other spells. So, that's pretty good. All right, we have infinite flame. This is an ongoing attack. Your your basic attack damage is increased by the quantity of mana on this spell.
Oh, kind of like uh very similar to my death spiral. Yeah, it's nice. This is also nice for you because you it only costs one, so it's only really going to be an increase of one, but if you add more mana to it somehow, like my cyclone. Check your cyclone. But I don't have access to this. You can hate draft it.
All right. So now we are going to have our cool down. So basically for all the spells that have mana on it, you just pluck off the top card and those go into the discard pile. Yes. Just like that. Very nice. So now if Monnique wants to utilize that thing, she can thumb through and say, "Ah, actually get two." Yeah, exactly.
All right. So gain three mana. Yeah, three mana. So I'm just trying to figure out how am I going to do this? Well, the only spell that is castable for you right now is Cyclones. So, uh, as I pulled off on that cool down, uh, there are three remaining on here. And the text on death spiral, of course, says each time you discard a card off the spell, deal one damage for each, uh, mono card remaining.
So, three damage to you. Okay. 1 2 3. Yep. So, I'm at 53. 53. Okay. I'm going to go ahead and activate this cyclone by putting three Mona cards on top of it. Okay. Just like that. Deal three damage. Deal three damage. So, you're going to take three. One, two, three. Then I'm going to It says you may move mana cards between two of your other spells.
I'm going to go ahead and just put split soul here. And so what's good about this is um this now I could technically cast again. Sorry. A bunch of mana. Yeah. Or discard a mana card off of two of your other spells. Yeah. Which I don't want to do. Uh but I only have one card in my hand. Oh, so you can't even do it.
No, but I'm going to go into basic attack time. All right. Four. Four. How many of these? You gave it to me. This is the one that you had to read. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Why am I so surprised? You knew about this. I did. That's true. All right. Okay. So, 46. 46 to 52. All right. So, now it is back to me.
I'm going to take a relic. These are expensive, but I'm going to do it because desperate times goes for desperate measures. This is frozen goblet. Your opponent gains only one mana card at the start of their next turn. So, fear me. I do. All right. Uh, next one is Savage Strike. This is an attack card that's immediate.
It says, "Deal damage equal to the highest power mana used to cast this spell." So you would have to reveal the mana at that time. So that's when you would want to lay a four on top of it. Yeah. Right. All right. Cool down. So these go into the discard. So now this is no longer in play right now. Technically multiply is not not in play.
Yep. Because it needs three mana exactly on. Yeah. So then I gain three. One, two, three. Yep. And then this time I will cast Bloodthirst because now next turn at the start of my turn I will deal some damage. Yep. And then of course I'm going to cast my relic, the frozen goblet. Now again uh the the thing with the relics is you don't actually place the cards on them.
You just discard the mana. So it's three mana cards. Yep. And now this is going to be an effect for you. Remember that. You only gain one mana card at the start of your next turn. So instead of getting three, I only get one. So you're basically restricting me from doing this. Correct. And now that this has been used, I discard this.
Yeah, it's destroyed. And that's it because I don't have any more spells to cast. So, as a basic attack, I hit you for three. It's not four, but it's bad for me because uh your bloodthirst is perfect right now. It's going to be three minus zero, cuz you have no cards in your hand. I have no cards in my hand.
And you also, how many cards you have in your hand? Zero. So, you're only going to gain one. Yeah, I know. All right. Stinks to you. All right. What costs only one mana? This one. Your basic attack damage is increased by the but I don't have any cards. All right, hold on. Oh, it's so good. Hold on. Hold on.
The one card effects are typically, you know, this this one's good if I remembered. Reveal the top mana on one of your spells. Gain the quantity of mana equal to its power. What did I put out there? I don't remember. And actually, you know what? I just confirmed this. You can check the you can privately review the mana that you have placed on your spells, but you cannot change the order.
Okay. So, if you want to take a look at that, you can. It's interesting because I'm going to choose the spell and then the cool down. So, it's really the second card that's there. Yes, that's true. Okay. So, let me let me take a look at these. No changing. No changing. Changing of order. Okay. Okay.
Uh, understood there. Okay. And let's see if I understand here. I hope you're understanding the order. I understood the order. The one in the back is the top. I know. Okay. Okay. So, I will Yes. Okay. I will take this. I'm going to take Revelation. So, I'm going to put this one here. All right, we got a new spell card in.
Nothing good. We have rewind. This is a one of those uh utility cards. And this has pick up a mana off of each of your other instant spells that have more than one mana on them. So, again, instant spells are the downward pointing arrow. Yeah. So, that so that's how you can kind of cycle through it. So, you can redeploy that that spell again.
That would be nice for my song of shadows. Yeah. Well, uh, so now we are going to go ahead and, um, cool down. So, one one these go off. Now, when I did that, there are how many remaining on this? One, two, three. So, you're going to take three damage. Death spiral. One, two, three. The fact that I was able to put another one on was kind of nice.
Yeah. Okay. Uh, and then, uh, I will take my one mana because of my penalty. What you did. Very good. Uh, I'm going to go ahead and send that mana onto Revelation. Okay. And I am going to reveal I believe it was this one. Let me just check if I'm making a booby. Yep, it is going to be this one. It's a two.
It's a two. That's all it is. So, you reveal it. I reveal it and you gain that many. All it means is reveal it. It doesn't say discard it, right? I just So, now I gain uh two mana. Yep. One, two. Oh, that stinks. Now I can make an educated decision. Well, uh let's do split soul. Okay, so split soul two mana on it.
And I'm going to choose option one, which is gain four. card two of your other. What's that? I'm just joking. So, you're going to gain four to me. Two, three, and four. Okay, come on. Oh, there's this mask of the beast. Your opponent must discard their hand. Well, I'm going to do a basic attack before something like that happens.
I'm going to basic attack you for two. Okay, that is pretty basic, but super basic. Real basic. All right, we're at 41 to 49. That was a lot of manipulation, a lot of comboing, but it didn't feel like I got like what I, you know, wanted out of it. I wanted a four in my hand as but I've already deployed two.
We've already Yeah, there have been a lot of fours. I think there's only like four of them in a deck. So now before we get too far, one thing that we didn't mention is this game actually comes with a micro expansion. It's a a deck of 10 cards that you don't really put into play until you've played a few games of it, but we are playing with those cards.
And so Silencing Amulet has that star at the bottom right hand corner. This is a card from that micro expansion. Now again, as you can see, this is a a pretty hefty spell. So you can choose not to play with them, right? So then it's back to me and I think I'm going to take Earthquake. So Naveen, how many cards do you have in your hand?
I have three. You have three. Three mana. Okay. So Earthquake is an attack card that says, "Deal two damage for each card with a unique mana power in your opponent's hand." So Naveen will be required to reveal that information. She wants me to have a one, two, three in my hand. Yes, a one, two, punch.
All right. So, this is Eclipse, a utility card that says, "Place three mana cards from the mana deck on any combination of your spells or your opponent's spells." Oh, that's awful. That could be great for me if I put the three all on death spiral. Well, it's very expensive. So, it is it is very expensive.
All right. Um, I am going to cool down. So, now that this comes off of bloodthirst, it says each time you discard a mana off the spell, deal three damage minus the highest power mana in your hand. My hand is empty. It's empty. So, three damage. So, she got the max value out of that. three. I'm proud of that.
That was good. Song of Shadows is now uh eligible to be cast and this gets discarded. So, you don't have a mana penalty. I don't have My mana penalty is gone, by the way. That it was only a one time, right? So, how many total you have in here? Three. I have three mana. The ones that you gave me. You're going to do blood thirst again.
I'm going to go with Song of Shadows. Oh, Song of Shadows. Interesting. Okay. I would like to be able to So, this is five mana. Yep. And I would like to be able to to deal, you know, I would like to be able to cast that spell basically. Which uh which would you like to give me? I would like to give you the one.
The one. Thank you for asking. All right. That's the that's the bottom text by the way if you forgot. Then I shall cast earthquake. So it's two mana cost. And Naveen, please reveal your hand of Oh, you'd like to know what I have? All ones. Ah, wow. You gave me the one. Well, I didn't know you had one.
If you if you remembered from the previous round, I basic attacked you with the two. That doesn't mean that you have a full hand of ones. All right. So, I only dealt two damage. So, one, two. It means at 44. That was good. Um Oh, that was good. You must be so proud of yourself. I'm just going to go for a basic attack of three.
Three. Yeah, three is good. So, this gets discarded and you get two. Three. We've taken an equal number of turns. That's right. That is true. That's good. All right. Back to you. All right. Well, uh, definitely I like the sound of eclipse. So, I got like some purple cards. I got some red cards, some green cards.
What is this? Another green. I'm diverse here. Very diverse uh repertoire. All right, this is animal ambush. That looks good. Whatever that is. Attack. Deal two damage. You may place a mana from the mana deck on one of your opponent's spells. That is beautiful. Oh, it's an Oh, ambush. I see. Yeah. So, you hit them and then you like slow down their regeneration.
Okay, that's good. Uh well uh I am going to cool down now. So let's go one. I'll skip this one for right now. Two deals damage. Yeah. And then now it's going to be this one. And then there's two remaining. So you're going to take two damage. One. Two. Okay. All right. Perfect. Okay. That's nice. So there we go.
So that's that. Uh now I'm going to draw three mana because Eclipse is very mana inensive. Mhm. So there we go. And what does my revelation say again? reveal the top mana on one of your on one of your spells. Oh, yeah. Yeah, you can gain more mana that way. This is nice. I want to discard this somehow.
But I'm going to go look at my spells. So, I'm trying to remember now. Okay. One. Oh my gosh. Are you going to do this every single time you're going to cast Revelation? There should be a limit. We should establish a rule. Maybe you can only check once every other turn. Oh, Monique. Oh, Monique. All right.
So, I will go ahead and do one on Revelation. Okay. And I will reveal the two. Okay. So, I I got a one for two. You know, just gained an extra one. One for a two. You just gained an extra. Yeah, I spent one to get two. Maybe you spent your one to get a four. That's nice. That's the thing I'm looking for.
Okay. So, let's go ahead and activate or cast Eclipse. So, I'm going to put four cards on top of it. So, that's a lot. Hefty. Boom. Okay. So, now it says place three mana cards from the mana deck on any combination of your spells or your opponent's spells. I'm going to take three. Okay. And I'm just going to put him right on top of Death Spiral.
Oh my gosh. Where is that spell that lets you It's the amulet. I see. Well, before you do any seeing, here's three damage of basic attack. Yeah. 1 2 3. I'm at 36 to 41. All right. You are at five spells. I can only do one more. Uh, as soon as Navian takes a six, he technically full. Mhm. Um, but as long as at the start of your turn you have a spell that does not have any mana on it, you can choose to replace it.
But if you start your turn obviously with a bunch of spells that just have all mana, then you have to skip that first step of your turn. Okay, my turn is going to be very simple because I'm taking the silencing amulet. It is you have five mana. Don't tell me you have five mana. Spiral. I have three and I'm gonna gain three more.
So, uh, I'm glad that we decided to go with this micro expansion here. This is Belch. Reveal two mana cards from the mana deck. Deal damage equal to the highest power mana revealed. Discard them or return them in any order. So, you're also taking your chances here with how strong that's going to be.
There's your three. Thank you. You're going to you're going to do that relic thing. Absolutely. So, this is expensive. It's of course because we're silencing Naveen. It costs five mana cards. So, here are the five 1, two, three, four, five. And so these get discarded. And now we are going to destroy a spell.
The nice thing is you get to replace it. I Oh, I get to replace it right away. Yes. So, let's destroy the death spiral. After the spell is destroyed, the owner of the spell replace it. One, two, three, four, five. There was five on here. So, I would off 10 damage over time. It would have been a bunch of passive damage.
So, it forced you to take a whole turn to do that, but then I took a whole turn to deploy it. So, technically Well, that's gone. That was beautiful. That was beautiful. But now it's gone. And now mine's gone. That's a good use of that amulet there. Yeah. Or it's called a relic. Oh, sorry. Wasn't the name of it an amulet?
Oh. Oh, yes. No, no, you're right. It is a silencing amulet relic. It's silenced to me. Now you can choose a a new spell to replace that. Yeah. Well, all right. I'm going to take that animal ambush. Let's go ahead and just put that out right there. Yeah, that sounded kind of nice. Okay, we have a new spell.
This is corruption. an immediate attack that says, "Deal damage equal to the quantity of mana cards on one of your other spells. Then discard two mona cards off of it." Oh, interesting. Okay, that is also kind of nice with what you have going on. I might have to take it. Um, all right. I'm also again not going to cast blood thirst because it's going to be the same difference.
So, I might as well just hit you now. Oh, for three. No funny business, right? Let's not waste a whole turn. Yep. Okay. So, one, two, three. And now we are at 36 to 38. Very close game. Mhm. Well, I thought that card was my ticket. It's gone. So, it would have been five to four to three to two. Oh, your death spin.
Yeah, the death spin. It would have been But the game is so close. 36 to 3. No, but like passively just five and four. It's just a countdown. That's why I had to get rid of passive damage. So, pretty nice. All right. Uh, okay. So, it's my turn. Uh, I have space for one more. So, I will take corruption.
Okay. Corruption over here. It uh says deal damage equal to the quantity of mana cards on one of your other spells, then discard two mana cards off of it. And I think I think this one has a lot on it. Four on it. Yeah. So it'll be three on it at the time. Okay. So that's good. And then it'll set me up for eclipse later.
So I'll take corruption. We're going to put it over here. That's an instant benefit though. So you place the three, you resolve it, and then it'll have to cool down for a while. Okay. New card. We have Shadow Oath. This is a utility spell immediate effect that says, "Pick up a mana card off of one of your other spells.
Your opponent gains one mana card." So that'd be top decking it. All right, so that's that's pick up by the way. It's not discarded. So you gain that. All right, so I'm going to go ahead and cool off all this stuff. And there we go. Very nice. Okay, all so you don't have any more of those those effects that are delayed, right?
No, these are all instant. They're all instant. Oh, they're all available. They're all available. Oh my gosh. Time to gain three mana. Good thing it wasn't that one mana that you did to me earlier. That that uh relic. That was no good. Okay, I'm definitely going to start off by playing on that split soul.
So, this two cards here, so I'm gonna gain four mana. I'm gonna choose option one. Okay, so one, two, three, four. Just want to do some more stuff, you know. Uhhuh. And this one allows me to do the thing where I look at the top card. I don't remember what I have here. H. It's only It only costs one bow, so it only costs one, so I might as well do it last.
So, let's go ahead and do the animal ambush that I got. Here's my three monocards. We're going to go on top of it. And it reads, "Deal two damage." So, yep. And then you may place a mana from the mana deck on one of your opponent's spells. Oh, please. Would you like to place it on bloodthirst? Not on Not on Bloodthirst, but I'm thinking about uh Song of Shadows.
It's going to it's going to prevent you from being able to um to use it to use it. It's going to like slow it down. Okay. So, now there are three on there cards there. Mhm. Then I'm going to go ahead and play my Cyclone. So, it's going to be three Mona cards on top. You have so much. It says, "Deal three damage.
You may move a mana card between two of your other spells." Okay, so you don't have to do that. It's may I Yeah, I don't have to. Um, so I will move these two onto Eclipse. Oh, right there. So that you can use this, I'm assuming. Uh, what does that say again? To gain four mana. He's going to keep gaining mana.
Well, uh, no. I'm just I I'll just end it there, though. But did you take the damage, the two damage? I did. So I'm at 34. Okay. Cuz we're at 3638. So total damage you should have taken so far is five. Three for the cyclone and then two for the animal. Okay. The cyclone one I didn't get. Okay. So it's three.
36 to 38. So I should be at 31. 1 2 3. 31 to 38. All right. And then because of the draw, I am going to do my basic attack now. So it's going to be a four. Oh, 27. Perfect. Oh, nasty. Got to keep it going. How many cards do you have in your hand? I have a card. You have one card. A singular card. Gosh, I wish you had more.
Oh, did you? There are some cards in the display that would meant like this one. Your opponent must discard their hand. That's why I was like, get these cards out. Deploy. Now, before I make my decision, let me just take a look at the card that you place. Oh, this is going to get discarded, so it doesn't matter.
Well, let me take a look at these anyway. Yeah, you might as well look. Okay. Interesting. All right. So, I'm going to go ahead and take Crescendo. Now, this is a uh a mana gaining spell, an instant one that says the next time you cast a spell this turn, it costs one more and instantly gains you four mana cards.
Okay, so I need some mana clearly. Okay, I'm going to This is my fifth spell. Uhhuh. Okay, so then we go ahead and replace that. We have an instant attack that's called gloom. It says deal two damage. You may take a mana of your choice from the discard pile and put it on one of your other spells. Oh.
Oh, on the spell though. Yeah. Okay. All right. So, I I Oh, I do my cool down. Yep. So, um I think this is unlocked. This one is unlocked now. This is very good. This is pretty This goes away. Oops. This is the one that goes in my hand, right? Yeah. You should have three. Okay. So, then first I am going to uh cast the Crescendo Spell.
Okay. So, it only costs one mana. Okay. And it says the next time you cast a spell, which is going to be now, this turn it costs one more. So, it's going to cost me two. And this is great because for the next two turns, I can I discard it's one of those delayed effects. So, I'll discard a mana off of it.
Deal three damage minus the highest power mana in my hand. If I can sort of work it so your own little spiral, my own little what was it called? It's not the the death spiral. Spiral death. I want to call it the death spin, but it's a death spiral, I think. Mhm. And it instantly gains me four mana cards.
So I Oh, we need to shuffle that deck. So now the likelihood of fours being in the deck are higher hopefully, unless you have them in your hand. Uh well, I have a a single card. Okay. So I draw two more. Two more. And then um are they ones? So if you want to put multiply in play, yeah, that's still three now cuz it's only just the very next one.
Yes. I think I'm going to have to do it. It's time is of the essence. So I'm going to go ahead and cast multiply. It's three mana. It's not going to be great. It's not going to be glorious. My basic attack is only two. Okay. So, it's four now. 2 * 2 is four. That's good. So, you're going to go down to 34.
H. This spread is We got to keep it the pressure on now. 27 to 34. I think we've taken an equal number of turns, which is bad for me. All right. So, now goes back to you. You have six spells, so you can either skip this step or you can uh replace one of those. Yeah, just these three though, right? Cuz they have nothing on them, right?
Okay, let's just I like Belch. Let's do it. Reveal two mana cards from the mana deck. Deal damage equal to the highest power mana revealed. So, I'm I'm looking to reveal a three or four. Discard them or return them in any order. Yeah. So, you have some control there. What are you going to replace? Uh my revelation card.
Revelation. This gets discarded. And now you have a new spell. Let's see what we have next. We have plague. An instant attack that says deal two damage. WA. It's that plague. The plague character. Deal two damage. You may deal two damage to yourself. If you do, gain four mana cards. That's good for you.
That's good for you. Deal two damage because you have a buffer. Yeah. So, one, two, three. Cooling off. Okay. Okay. And then now I get three cards. So, let's go. One, two, three. Hopefully, they are very lovely. And then you have these three that are available. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I'm definitely going to want to get more mana.
So, I'm going to spend two cards to get four mana. I'm going to do option one. So, one split soul, three, four. Yep. H. That's a nice card. I would like to discard that one as well. I need an amulet or something. You have good combo here. Thank you. Okay, so I'm going to do the uh corruption over there.
So, that's uh so three mana. Three mana. I have three. And then you deal damage equal to the quantity of mana on one of your other spells. I believe it's this one. One, two, three, four damage. Wow. Then discard two mana cards off of it. And do I get to I get to look at it? No, you just discard the top two.
Discard the top two. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, there they are. They're both ones. Okay. So, that was four damage, right? Uhhuh. All right. So, I'm at 23. So, there's two on this eclipse. Okay. This is This is looking bad for me. Then we're going to belch two on that belch. That's the card that I just came in.
Okay. Deal two Mona cards in the mana deck and then deal damage equal to the higher three of the two. So, you can either discard them or you can return them in any order. I am going to return the two. Okay. And discard the three. Okay. Yeah. Um well, it says discard them or return them in any order.
Okay. I see. We'll just discard them both. So, I mean, it's possible that you could split it, but let's just go based off Yeah, the wording that makes sense. Yeah. Okay. So, I'm at 20. Uh and then now we're going to basic attack for three. For three. One, two, three. Oh my gosh. 17 to 13. We must No, but look, I have nothing to do.
This is not That part's not good. That's true. You have nothing to do. And how many cards do you have in your hand? Zero. Oh, but you're going to gain three. Three. Now's my chance. Yeah, now's your chance. So, I think I think I'm going to take some a little bit of a risk. H, this is kind of desperate of me.
I'm going to get I'm going to take gloom. Okay, so this says deal two damage. You may take a mana of your choice from the discard pile and put it on one of your other spells. So, I'm taking this. And then this gets replaced by an instant attack called Brain Drain. Deal damage equal to the lowest power mana in your hand.
So you want to have a single four in your hand. Yeah. Interesting. Hold on to it. Uh so you get three. Okay. So I get three. I do a cool down. So one we I think everybody just gets depleted here. Four. Five. We can't forget though. Blood bloodthirst says each time you discard a mana, it's three minus.
So these three mana I drew for you are not technically in your hand. I have no mana in my hand. So this is going to be three damage to you. 1 2 three. So you're at 31 3117 with these are for me. This is useless right now cuz it's two damage for each card with a unique mana power. You want me to have a hoorde of mana in my hand when you when you deploy that.
Yeah, that's true. And I can't use this with only three mana in my hand. So, I'm just going to to activate gloom. Says deal two damage. Deal two damage. Okay. You may take a mana of your choice from the discard pile and put it on one of your other spells. I'm assuming you want to thumb through the whole thing.
Yeah, let's just take the highest valued one. Three in there. A three, I believe. Let me see if there's a four. I don't think there's a four. Yeah, I will place this on top of multiply. Why? I might as well, right? Oh, you're going to make it so it's 2x. I don't know if it's I just don't have that much time, so I might as well just try to get to try to get the damage where I can, right?
You got a double. So, now that this has exactly three cards, um my basic attack is is 2x, which is just two times two. That's a seven. That's a seven turn. So, minus four. 25 to 17, you know. All right. I got to I got to put pressure on here. So I cannot choose a new spell because everything has mana on it.
So I skip that. You have some time. It's almost like I skipped a little turn here. So that's bad. Then we are going to uh you're cool. Cool. Which I think only I think nothing. Oh my gosh. That's great. You still have Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Like you are you I don't I do gain three mana which is now good for your earth.
Yes. Earthquake. Come on. Be a four. Now you cast, you cannot cast anything, but you can do your basic attack. Four. What? You were so you've been on the best mana. Best mana around. You know, I I I see a lot of mana, so therefore I see a lot of force. Are you like a mana oracle or something? Okay. All right.
So now it's back to me. I was granted a little bit of extra time. I can replace one of these two. How many cards do you have in your hand? I have two cards. So, you know for sure you're going to if you do that, you'll at least damage me for two. It's not great. I'll tell you that much. Um, let's see.
Well, maybe breathe fire might be good. Depending on what these cost, I'm going to do it. I'm going to try it. So, I'm going to take breathe fire. What are you going to replace? I'm going to replace earthquake. Oh, why? Yeah. That's it. That's it. It sounds so dis like you're disappointed. It just never got off the ground.
It didn't. It really didn't. H That's unfortunate. It had very good potential if you had just like a a rainbow of of values in your hand, but I was always just getting rid of my mana. Oh well. So, breathe fire, by the way, lets me deal one damage for each of your spells with exactly two mana cards on it.
I'm going to try to do some finagling. Let's see if that can happen. That's a new spell. Uh, we have a new spell. This is a an immediate utility devotion. Choose one. Gain two mana cards or discard a mana off of one of your other spells. That's good. Helps you get Don't forget to cool these down. Oh, yes.
I'm going to cool down. Multiply is no longer active. Good. Song of Shadows is now available. Bloodthirst is deal three more damage to you. Please get this. Three more damage to me. Yeah. Oh yeah, I did not have any mana in my hand. Manaless. Oh my gosh, this would be great. This would be great if we can do good things.
So, let's go ahead and start by casting Song of Shadows. So, two mana. It lets me gain five mana. So, let's see that. And then I have to give you one card of my choice. So, you can go ahead and take that one. Take those. Take the single one. It's right there for you. I'll take it for the taking. I'll take it.
Then I will cast Crescendo. So, this is again the one that lets me uh it requires me to cast a spell for one additional mana, but it gains me four mana cards. So, I will do Bloodthirst. I hate that card. I'm going to place two cards on. It's not going to be great though cuz I'm instantly gaining four mana cards.
But it is what it is. Three. Four. Oh, I see. It's not. Yeah, it's not actually going to be super useful, but I'm just using it so that breathe fire is something. Yeah. And then finally, I shall breathe fire. So, this costs two mana itself. And it says, "Deal one damage for each of your spells with exactly two mana cards on it." Oh, it's only one damage.
I thought it was two. That's okay. So, it's going to be one, two, three, four. So, four damage. Four damage is good. So, minus four. And then I'm going to do a basic attack for another four. You found a four. I found a four. Look at you. And now we we 13 to 14. Look. Yeah. Fantastic. That's the thing.
Like that one turn I knew was going to be a dead turn for me. Okay. I can lose this game and still feel okay about it. As long as there wasn't like a huge I need a 14point turn right now cuz you're going to do some Well, I think now you're in that situation. I am in No. ish. I Yes. ish. Yeah. Oh, this one is going to unlock for me.
Yeah. Okay. So, I can't take a new spell. Correct. Uh, but we can cool these all down. One, two, three, four. So many available spells. Spell time. All right. And then now I'm going to draw three. Yep. One, two, three. There you go. Come in with some fours. I gave you a one value there. You did. Like even if the value is low, it's still an additional mana.
Mana in your hand. All right, let's go ahead and do this. I'm going to put two on that split soul. Okay. And I gained myself four mana. Four mana. Mana. Come on. Split soul was great for you. Yeah, it was a good one. That was a That was a champion spell. I was happy with that one. Then I'm going to do Belch.
So, let's put these two on here. Okay. And reveal two Mona cards from the deck and then you take the damage of the the worst of the two and then Okay. Uh they're both twos. They're both twos. So, two. So, you know, I'm going to put them back on top. Oh, okay. I'm right back on top right there. You want me to have them?
Yeah. Okay. Then I am going to do the animal ambush. So, that's going to be three on them. Okay. So, that is deal two damage. Deal two damage. And then you may you can move a mana card between two of your other spells. Oh, no. This one says uh you may place a mana from the mana deck on one of your opponent's spells.
Oh, okay. So, I will. Okay. Where? Here. On that one cuz it's it was going to cool down. I didn't want that to cool down. So, you're at what? How much? Nine. Nine. Can you do it? Are you going to do it? Time is of the essence. I want to do it. All right. Four damage to your basic attack. Okay, minus four.
Oh, I'm at five. Okay, I wanted to wipe you out, but it is back to me. I cannot take a spell. So, we're going to go directly to cool down. You are nasty doing that. Here's exactly one, two, three, two, everything. Bloodthirst. It's deal three damage minus the highest p power mana in your hand. Uh, it's a three.
Okay, so zero. So, it's a zero. But I do remove that card. But that's the one that I said wasn't really going to do anything. That goes to discard. Um I have your three here. Oh my gosh. And then we do have to shuffle this mana deck which I can do later. This is not going to do I didn't calculate that properly because I put that one on.
This is a waste. This is a waste of a turn. Oh, thank god. I'm going to lose. I'm going to lose. It's written in the books. All right. Minus three. Minus three. Just straight to basic attack because the only spell I can cast is this and it doesn't do anything for me right now. Okay. So, one, two, three.
H. That was a miscalculation. So 5 to 11. Naveen, bring us home. Do my dirtiest. I know you can do it. All right, let's go ahead and just do uh infinite flame. We're going to swap out. What does it do? Oh, uh it is your basic attack damage is increased by the quantity of mana on this spell. So if I put if I have one mana on here, then it's plus one to my basic attack.
I see. So I'm going to go ahead and swap this one out. So you're placing Eclipse. Oh, okay. So interesting. Uh we have a new spell. It is trample. Uh, deal one damage. Deal an additional two damage for each other spell you cast this turn that costs three or greater. Okay. So now I'm gonna cool down one, two, three, and four.
And now I need mana. So we're going to have go ahead and shuffle this. So now we have one, two, three mana coming my way. This be something I can do. Okay. All right. We're going to bring it home here. Bringing it home. All right. We are going to put one down on infinite flame. Your basic attack is increased by one.
We have four plus one is the five that we looking for. Five. You got to get through mana. Minus four. Do you want to do the Yes. The final that was so fast. Boom. The final final damage. I am now at zero health. I have been defeated. Naveen is the champion wizard today. Good job. This is one of very few times that I've won in this game.
So, you made a very good combination. I I did. Well, I I was able to find mana. I think you do have to balance out like the greens, the purples, and the reds. Yeah, absolutely. Like, in a dueling game, it's probably going to be very tempting to just take all the attack cards, but you need to find creative ways to combo to combo with the rest of your cards so that you can generate more mana, utilize your cards more often, potentially activate the delayed cards more often than they than they allow you to initially.
So, it is a game of opportunity for sure. Mhm. Now, again, this is a standalone expansion, so from what we understand, you can mix and match the cards in into one big deck. Uh because namely the the gameplay is the same. So, you can have different combinations with more cards with the original game.
And like we're mentioning, the new type of card here were the relics. Now, I did get to use a couple of them. I didn't use them, but there are a lot more. So, we know the mask of the beast, crystal shard. This is one that I was tempting that was very tempting to use. Add this relic to your hand. Treat it as a Oh, five power mana.
Yeah, but once discarded, it goes to the spell discard. Oh, interesting. So, uh, this would have been nice if I could have coupled it with my multiply cuz that would have been 10 damage in one turn. Uh, another thing is we didn't get to see a whole lot of the other micro expansion cards. I see a lot of them at the bottom here.
They're pretty strong. Like time walk says, "Gain five mana cards. You may choose to gain less mana. The next spell you cast this turn costs one less for each mana you chose not to gain." So, they're also more complicated. Echo is another example. It says, "Deal three damage. If you cast one of your other instant spells immediately before this, and it costs one or less, this spell gains that spell's effect." So, it's quite literally an echo.
Yeah. So, it's not only is it three damage, but it also mimics this maybe a a very powerful spell that you had just cast. Um, this is an example of a relic, the Seeing Stone. Look at the top four spells of the spell deck. You might choose one to replace this spell. return all remaining spells in an order of your choosing.
And so, as you can see, there are a ton of other cards that we didn't get to see during our gameplay, but I believe the the micro expansion is a total of 10 cards. So, those were only a few uh that come with the game. Well, there you have it. That is Wizards of the Grimoire, Shifting Sands. Now, if you have any questions about anything you saw here, feel free to leave in the comments down below.
