Boardgame Bollocks Vlog EP3 - Too Many Games?
Transcript
Board games 4K Hello. Welcome back to another episode of our sort of semi-regular vlog board game bollocks. And uh What we do in this in this vlog, what we do is we generally just sort of have a few random thoughts and then we sort of chew our thinking and just talk randomly and off the cuff about different things that sort of bother us or that they're interested of interest to us. And uh today we we we've um we've been doing a a a sort of series that's showing you our entire board gaming collection and um we've uh it's it's got us thinking that maybe we've got too many games because we've been looking through the collection and we've been thinking we ain't played that, we ain't played that, we ain't played that. And people will start to call this sort of thing the shelf of shame. We're not ashamed that we haven't played games because obviously it takes time to learn and to play different games, right? So the subject of today's thoughts are is there any point in buying games that you'll probably never play? Cuz in the UK recently there's been a sort of a a sort of a fire sale of loads and loads of different board games. I mean, we've been we've been able to pick up all these sort of quite expensive games for peanuts, you know, we picked up a Charterstone for like 15 quid. We got a Dreadball for a tenner. Pirate's Cove 15 quid, Yamatai for 15 quid. We picked up all the Walking Dead uh games for like
peanuts, 20 quid for all of them, you know? And um it let me think do what am I an idiot for buying all these games? Cuz we got we got the we got the Networks, the Colonists. We got um Dead of Winter, Flick 'em Up. We've got all these games that we we couldn't possibly find time to play. I mean, we're struggling to find time to play all the game all the other games multiple times. I mean, cuz games aren't just they're not just one play-through things, you know, you in order to experience a game surely you need to play it multiple multiple multiple multiple multiple times, right? So, is it worth I mean, is it healthy to to amass these huge collections of things that you will never play? And is is that a problem?
Have I got Have I got a sort of a mental problem a mental block that compels me to buy all these material things that are just going to sit there gathering dust, you know, cuz everybody we look through this this website called Board Game Prices all the time. We We're looking at Board Game Geek to see if there's any bargains going on all the bargain pages. And then if we see something, "Oh, oh, we've been after that for quite a while. Should we pick it up?" And then it just sits there doing nothing. So, the question is is it worth your time and money to pick up all these games you will never play? And I've been thinking about this quite a lot recently over the last week or so since we've been doing this this sort of run-through because series about our our gaming collection. And I've come to the conclusion that it's not worth it, right? For the simple fact that all the money that you're spending on things you will never use could be used for something that will give you immediate enjoyment or help somebody else, right? You could You could donate that money or something, you know, I don't know. Or you could use it in a more constructive way rather than to buy these meaningless frivolous sort of wants, if you know what I mean.
So, I mean, so what once we've done our complete run-through of that I think what we're going to what we're going to start to do we're going to start to trim down our collection to the point where I mean, not not not to the point where it's manageable. Because it I mean, there's nothing man you don't need to manage a room full of boxes, right? We're going to trim it down to a point where we can look through all the shelves and say that's worth keeping. We Yeah, we really enjoyed that game. That was good to That was good game. So So every entry in in the shelf has a memory attached to it and it's not just a case of like well, when you look at it you go, "Should we play that today?" No, let's play Let's Let's play something we've already played. You know? And we're going to try We're going to try really hard. I know it's difficult when you've got a What is it? Addiction? You know, at the end of the day, buying all these board games is an addiction and that that make that that causes a problem and I'm going to think a little bit further into this to see you know, how you can combat that how you can I can can sort that out in your own mind how you can stop this sort of compulsive you know, purchasing things. You know, see if there's anything missing there, you know, that See if there's a reason behind all this this stuff. And I know I'm not alone in this cuz I see people taking the mic out of people that have got this compulsive problem of buying board games, but we're going to try to trim the collection down to a series of memories, you know? And if if we really see a game we're going to we really want to play that obviously it's been reviewed quite well
or looks really interesting it's going to have to be really really interesting, then we will pick it up, but we're going to try and leave alone a lot of the the games cuz I do believe that the board gaming industry it is a it's a point now where there's so many games being released. There's so many really poor games being released, but there's good games as well. Don't get me wrong, there's loads and loads of excellent, wonderful games being released, but there's so many mediocre, pointless, run-of-the-mill games being released this this this day and age that it's getting to the point where I think the the board gaming industry could I'm not saying it will, but it could could destroy itself, you know. But that's for another time. We're going to talk about that later. I'm going to do a bit more thinking. When I come back and we're going to talk about whether or not the ball game industry is going to destroy itself through saturation, market saturation, overpricing, and uh you know, just general sort of corporatization. But that is something to think about. Go away and have a think about what I've talked about here cuz it it's interesting to me. And um I hope it's interesting to you. So that's uh episode three of our rambling about bollocks. And um we'll see you in the next video.
