The Adventure Store - Board Game Preview
Transcript
Hello everyone, this is Johannes and you are watching Board Gaming Ramblings. And today I am taking a look at the Adventure Store. This is a trick taking game. It's crowdfunding. You can check out the link in the description if anything in this video sounds interesting to you. This is a trick taking game, but it is also a deck building game. I heard somebody say that this felt like a pretty traditional trick taking game and then you match it up with like a dominion with a market of cards that you can buy and spoiler alert it is exactly that way. You are going to start with your deck of cards. Going to be 22 cards in it. And first interesting thing about this trick taking game is, oh, by the way, I'm going to assume you know what trick taking games are. Very simply, somebody's going to play a card in a suit, you have to follow in the same suit. And then the player with who has the highest color or the highest card number in that suit is going to win the trick. There might be a trump which then if you don't have the collar you can play the trump color and you will win the trick. Whenever you win a trick in this game you're going to get coins.
These are five coins because it's half of it. You see there's a Roman numeral five and if you put it together it's a Roman numeral X which is 10. And that is trick and basically how trick works in this game. Whenever you also play a card, you can also play a like a special bonus card that might add or subtract to it or do other special abilities. But back to the deck of cards. You're going to have 22 cards. And the first interesting thing, as I said, is that you're all going to have the same deck of cards, which means that you can play the same card. So let's say I play a three. And then if somebody then later plays a card or a value that is the same. So let's say here now I play a tree. Then I can add another card of the same color. So now I would win this trick if it was a two-player game. As I said, whenever you win a trick, you will get coins. And at the end of the round, you will get points depending on like who won the most tricks is going to get the most points. If you didn't win zero tricks because then you're going to steal the first place and win the most or will get the most points. After that, in the first five rounds, there's eight of them in the game. You're going to buy cards. And this is where the game changes from kind of a normal deck building game or normal trick I'm saying deck building because that's a word I've said many more times than tricking games. Maybe maybe it's catching up, but it's feeling more like a deck building game in that phase because I'm buying cards for my deck. So that I will be
buying these cards with coins that I have won during that round of tricks. I can only buy the cards at the bottom. If I one of these are empty, I can choose a card from the top that comes down and that's not now available to buy. If you have the least coins, you can throw away your all your coins and get whatever card you want, but then you won't be able to buy any more coins. But that also changes the player or that player then be able to choose trump. So, it is a lot of interesting things here. That is basically the game. There's a lot of different cards you can choose from. Like in Dominion, another thing that makes it feel like a Dominion H is that you have like variable sets that are suggested to you. So you can play with so many variations. And of course like Dominion, you can shuffle them up the the selector cards and choose which of those that you are going to play with.
There are some uh goals for the end of the game and during the game. There are variable player powers in the game. We didn't get to play with those because this is a prototype. So, not everything is finished and things might change because it is a prototype. I have to say I think that this game manages to do something very interesting and something I am a bit surprised that hasn't been done yet, which is doing Dominion in a trick taking game. And I really there's eight rounds. It took about an hourish to play, which I think is a good amount of time to play it. I don't think that I think that the trick taking part is quick and none of the cards are very complex and I think that's a good choice because if you made it too complex the game would be too long. That's as I said before one of my negative things about some tricking games is that like okay we're playing seven rounds of this game or the rounds feel too long so the game just ends up feeling too long. I feel like this game manages to stop that because you kind of get like the you have the trick taking round then you have a little break where you buy the cards and you get excited for how you're going to use those cards in their strategy and then or tactics there's a business strategy but like it's well tricking games it's going to be you're going to draw cards there's going to be luck like in trick taking games and and then you go back to the trick taking and what I also like is that after five rounds of buying you're not going to buy any more cards so the last three rounds is just going to be straight up a trick
taking. There's way to trash your cards. You can thin your deck. That's kind of more like a strategic choices of which cards you want to get rid of so that you end up with a better deck of cards. And there is I would say there's a lot of variability for a trick taking game. Very often a trick taking game I would say there has been quite a few trick games lately where like variable setups, variable rules. This one takes and I think again I think it's a good thing that the trick taking part isn't as wonky like it doesn't have that many like wrinkles or things like it's mostly try to get many tricks or try to get zero tricks and that is the things you're going for but then it's the deck building and those cards that make this game feel different from the other trick taking games. All in all I think this is a very interesting and I had a great lot of fun playing this game. This is one I would like to play more. I think that as I said, positive things, the trick taking isn't very complicated. The cards aren't very complicated. It makes it also a like available for people to play. It's not like you have to have played 50 trick taking games before understanding it. If you play the Dominion and you played some trick taking game like Skull King or some other games, I can I don't remember a single name of tricking game format and that's another one. uh you play those then you can play this and probably if you haven't played anything as well but I don't think it should be like your first trick taking game. If anything in this video made you feel like I want to check this game out then you can do
