Boardgames with Jen and a random Cardia tournament?! | Weekend Vlog
Transcript
Welcome to a new board game vlog. Today I'm driving to Germany to visit my friend Jennifer and we're gonna play games. Please ignore all the mess behind me. Okay, we're not looking at that. I need to clean my house. I'm too lazy. I need to play games. I don't have time to clean. Okay, give me a break. All right, so driving to Germany. I'm so excited. And look what just arrived yesterday.
Oh my god, I'm so excited. You don't understand. I am so excited. We're definitely going to play this. So, bringing that with me. Jennifer doesn't know, so it's going to be a surprise. And yeah, we're going to go. I'm going to listen to my audio book. I'm currently listening to Babel by RF Kuang, which I love RF Kuang's books. That's my cat. But yes, listening to Babel by RF Kuang. I just started it, so I'm not very far into the story at all, but so far I'm liking it. So, I'm very excited to see what the world is going to be like and what the magic is going to be like.
Fore!
Foreign! Foreign!
We're playing a tournament now.
Random. A random party out here. Let's see if we can win something.
I just want to have a promo card.
I want a playmat.
I don't even have the game at all.
So, we went to this like little board game event. It was so cute, very fun. Um, and Jennifer and I, we played Cardia for the first time. So, we did a demo of that game. Um, she'd played it before. I think I played it for the first time and we really enjoyed it. And the guy was like, "We're doing a tournament at 2 p.m. you can join." And we were like, "Sure." So, we played the cardia tournament and I won, which so random. Um, there were 10 people, just to give you a bit of a 10 people played tournament. Um, and I won a playmat for the game. So, it's duel of cardia. That's what the official title of the game is, I think. But it's very pretty.
And they gave me these like deluxe tokens for the game. Beautiful. And some of the foil cards I showed you clips of. Um, but yeah, I don't own this game, but now I have deluxe components and a playmat. So, I ordered the game online after the tournament, and it's arriving at my house probably tomorrow. So that's good. Um, also I have now earned a spot on the grand tournament of this game at Spiel. I'm not sure if it's I think it's like the German national cardia tournament. This is what is happening right now. Okay, so I'm I mean I'm going to spiel anyways. You you also would have then gotten like the the spiel ticket for the Sunday because the tournament is on Sunday. I was like, I don't need the ticket. You can give it to someone else maybe because I'm already going to Spiel. Um, so I don't need the ticket, but I guess I'm going to participate in a Cardia duel tournament on the Sunday. So, just so you know, if if you're interested in that, you can come and watch me play, I guess. Um, I will probably lose in like the first round. Um, but still going to be fun. I'm down to play, so We'll see how it goes. I'm also just This game is amazing. If you like I mean I almost never play two-player games. If you followed me for a while, you know this,
but this game is so fun. I had an absolute blast playing this game. I've played like 12 games of this today. Um it's very quick. It's very I mean, how do you even explain? You're just playing cards up against each other and the highest number of the card that's played. So, you play two cards at the same time. The highest number wins and gets like a token on it. The first person with five tokens wins the game, but the card that doesn't get a token on it, so the lower value card, that card's effect gets activated. And the effects are wild. Very powerful and just can change the game with like one card. So very very fun. Had a blast. Every game we played was so different and we had some really exciting g it was just a great time. Um so that's that.
This is this is why life is great. Just we we went for this tournament like spontaneously. We were like sure we'll do the tournament. Why not? And then this happens. Wild. Um, also went to do some grocery shopping, which is always fun in a different country because I'm in Germany now with Jennifer, so for me it's fun. And they had blind boxes at this German uh like grocery store. They had PopMart blind boxes. Let me rephrase. They had PopMart blind boxes at a German grocery store. Wild. I got one that's not PopMart, but a different brand. the ones they got from PopMart weren't the ones that I usually collect. So, I was like, it's good thing that they didn't have them. But, I did see this one that I thought was so cute.
Um, and it's from a different brand called 52 Toys. I don't know it. It's Chinese, obviously. Um, but I will open this, not right now, but in this vlog, so stay tuned for that. And yeah, we're going to have some dinner now, and then we're going to play games. We have so much to play. We're not going to have time. I'm going to sleep over. So, we have the Sunday as well. Um, but we have to get crunching to play all the games. We'll see what happens.
Fore! Foreign! Foreign!
foreign. Fore! Foreign! Foreign!
Good morning. It is now Sunday and we're going to continue playing all of the games. Of course, we did play quite a lot still yesterday. Um, we played until like 12:30 or something and then we were like dead. So, we had to go to sleep. Um, but we played the new tent expansion, Hive. So, there's two expansions as I showed, hive and seller. We played hive, which like adds apiaries, so you can unlock apiaries, add bees, and then the bees obviously will give you honey. Um, and I've really enjoyed I mean only we only played one game, but I really enjoyed what it adds. I mean tend already has so many choices.
It adds more choices of course. So that is definitely you know mindmelting in a good way. Um, but then it adds like this scoring possibility for you to use your medals in a more efficient way because obviously when you have two medals of the same badge, you get the badge, but the third medal doesn't I mean you get obviously the medal which is still really good, but now there's a way that the third medal will just have more effect for endgame scoring which is really cool. Um, and I just love bees. Who doesn't love bees? So, that's fun always. Um, then we played, what else did we play? We played Mountain Goats Legacy. Um, I really wanted to play. I don't have this allplay game. I did really want to play it. I saw Monique and Naveen from Before You Play do a video and I was just curious, so I watched it and I was like, damn, that honestly looks really fun. Um, and Jennifer has it. So, we played the first two chapters cuz it's legacy. Um, and I actually really enjoy this. It's definitely simple. The legacy aspect does add more to every chapter, of course, so it will change up the game play a little bit or the choices you make um or the way you score certain things, but I really enjoyed just the simple dice chucking game that this is very fun. Um, and we played Camp Grizzly, which is like a horror survival
style game. Perfect for Halloween for sure. Um, it was hard though. We struggled. The killer really came for us. Um, Otis is his name. And it was hard. I think I definitely need to play it again. I might even home brew a couple things just for like not necessarily difficulty, but for like theme and uh storytelling. I don't know. [snorts] So, we'll see. I definitely want to make a solo video on that game. Um but I'm not sure when I will do that. Um what else did we play? Did we play something else? We did also play before the duel, the Cardia duel tournament. We played Aritnik, which is a game that Jennifer has had for a while um since UK Games Expo. And that was so cute. Very fun game. Beautiful art and it's like your shepherds and you score points at the end of the game for the amount of sheep you have. So, you just need to make sure you're the best shepherd basically. And there's these spirits moving around on the board and you can like move into the same space as a spirit to trade with them so they can like help you. So you can like give basically sacrifice sheep to the spirits to gain benefits. Um very fun, very very cute, clever tile placement. Really
enjoyed that. [snorts] And we'll see what we'll play today. I don't know. I am going to open this I want I don't know. I like all of them except this one. The one that's like on the front. So, I do like the green ones a lot. We'll see. As long as it's not the one on the front, which I'm now jinxing this to let it be that one, but we'll see. There's always like a card inside with the one that
Oh, yeah.
It is. So, I and not look at that. Okay, let's see. Not looking at that. I swear to God. Usually I have pretty good luck with blind boxes, but this is this is just every time I'm like, I like all of them except this one. I get that one. That has happened to me before. But I mean, she's still cute though. She's pretty.
She's very cute. And then the little like it's kind of like a guard cap capture Sakura if you know that anime. This reminds me of that will go on her staff. That's cute though. A It's just the hat is so poy that it's just a little too poy for me. But I love the white and the gold. It's very pretty. Okay. Well, there we go.
always found you.
always down. Down.
Let me down.
I am back home as you can see with my lovely darling that is like, "Mom, what are you even talking about?" Okay. Um, I am showered and cozy. I'm on the couch and I'm just going to watch a movie now. Um, and chill. Uh, but we had a great second day. So, a wonderful board game weekend filled with so many great games. Today we played Kano, which I love. I do have a video of that on the channel if you want to check it out. Um, we played Fame and Fable by Owen Davey, which is a game I have been wanting to play for so long. Um, so I was very, very excited. I was able to play that with Jennifer and I absolutely loved it. I thought it was so fun and quick. It's like a boss battler um but with like cards and you have this whole party of heroes and allies and you're trying to fight. It's really really fun and the artwork is just incredible. Owen Davy's artwork is just something very unique and stunning. I absolutely love it.
And then we played Flip Voyage, which is a game that Jennifer really wanted to play. I love Flip Voyage. Um, it's one of my favorite flip and rights. Um, I even prefer it to flip town, even though, you know, obviously those are both really, really great, but I like the theming a bit more of Flip Voyage because it's like the sea, the nautical theme. I think it's really fun. Um, but yeah, so such a wonderful weekend. The highlight for sure was the random cardia tournament because that was just so such a random side quest of my life. Um, so very very curious about the rest of that game. I'm actually so excited to get it. It hasn't arrived yet, but I'm so excited to have it. And because the base game comes with two different decks that you can play with, and I've only played with the one. Um, so I'm very excited to see the cards in the other deck. And there's a couple of expansions that also add a lot of replayability uh to the game, even though I find it's already quite replayable. But yeah, I'm just excited about even like discovering that game in such a unique way. Very fun. Um, but yes, and on the way back home, I listened to more of Babel by Arf Kuang. So I'll just talk a little bit about that. So, if you don't care about books, you can check out now um because I'll end the vlog after that. But if you
want to hear my thoughts on Babel so far, keep watching. So, yes, I as I mentioned, I love RF Kuang. I think she is a wonderful writer, a very talented writer, um a very clever writer, and Babel has really just it hooks you in from the very start. Uh, it's very enticing. The main character is wonderful to follow along the journey with. He's a Chinese boy that gets like kind of like picked up by this old or is he old? I don't know. In my head, it's an old man, but a an English man that like takes him to I'm going to speak in broad terms here, but to Oxford. Um, and it is a like fantasy version of Oxford, but it's very much based in history. So, kind of like an urban fantasy set in like early 1800s Oxford, where there is a magic system with these silver bars that have words inscribed on them, and when you hold them and speak the word, magic happens. And there's probably way more to it that I don't know yet, but very very interesting so far. And because this is a Chinese young adult um in Oxford 1800s and still set in like authentic
history of our world with like fantastical elements thrown in there. The racism is horrifying. It's so I don't even really know how to describe it because it's not like in yourrface ra I mean I don't I mean it is very in-your-face racism because it's very obvious but it is such a commonality almost that makes it even more horrifying because it's just expected and our main character also expects it to a certain degree and it's just so disgusting um and so well written really really fascinating in that aspect as well besides the whole like fantasy element and obviously it's called Babel so there's like a a version of Babel in Oxford England in the early 1800s it's a fascinating fascinating story so far very excited to see where it goes because I can already tell it's probably going to get pretty intense and pretty crazy quite quickly. So, I can't wait.
Um, yes, I'm reading a bunch of books at the same time. I really want to do a reading vlog soon. Hopefully, like in maybe not super soon, but like October, Novemberish, like cozy autumal times. I mean, Spiel's in October, so it's I'm like delusional that I have time, but I want to do one. So, I I'll see if I can squeeze one in somewhere where it's just me reading a bunch of books. Um, I also just want to narrow down the TBR. So, we'll see. So, thanks so much for watching. If you're still here, let me know like the board game that you recently played that you really enjoyed or the book or both that you've reading been reading currently that you're enjoying or that the last book you read that you really enjoyed.
Let me know down below and I'll see you guys soon in a new video. Bye.
