Spytails - Board Game Playthrough. A trick taking bidding game of spies with tails
Spy Tales, Sneaky Secret Agents. Well, with tails, right? We'll be showing you a four-player play-through of Spy Tales. It is a trick-taking game with bidding and a lots of twists. And we do have how to play video as well, so check the link out in down below in the video description. Yes, and hello.
I'm Tarrant. Stella here from Meeple University. Uh so, this is Spy Tales. This is a trick-taking game for two to four players. And what we'll be doing here for you is showing you a each two-handed four-player play-through uh and an individual play-through. So, you can play team mode, but we're going to be playing it two-handed each and individually.
Yes. Uh to give you a flavor of how this game goes. We're actually going to show you two rounds of the game. We'll show you the first round to give you the basics, but this is a game that escalates. You get a lot of interesting cards and effects that come in as the game goes on. And so, we're going to show you a later round as well to really see how that all comes together.
Sounds good. Yes. Uh this game is published by Moka Wamu, who is of course known for its lovely wooden figures. And in this game, it is a It is a bidding trick-taking game, and you use these little characters here to bid with. So, that's very cool. Very cute. >> get those with Moka Wamu's games. It's always a nice feature.
Like the previous of their games as well, Potion Explosion and Santorini and Moka Towers. So, these are handmade, hand-painted. So, this always been the signatures of their games. They're cute. Look. So, each one has got a name as well and special power. So, I will be Sorry, this one is Mimic, which I will control its hand, and Mirage.
And Tarrant here would be Echo and Alka. Yes, I am cold colors and you are warm colors. Nice. Because you are cold and warm? >> Because I'm usually blue and you're usually yellow. Fair. And that seems simplest. Okay. All right. So, I say let's go straight into the explanation. So, here we are as set up for round one.
And this is a trick-taking game with bidding. So, we have our hands here, hand of seven cards, which has come from a personal basic deck. And each of us will be bidding between zero and five tricks to win out of the seven in this round. And we'll also be staking influence. So, we start the game with 10 influence.
These are basically our victory points, and you have to bid an amount on whether you think you'll meet your forecast or not. And you'll either double your money or lose your money. So, it's quite high stakes in that regard. In this first round, the cards are very basic. We each have a deck of 21. There are three suits.
That's blue, green, and yellow. And they stalking and code-breaking. They have these spy kinds of themes. And the numbers range from four to 10. So, up here at the top, there's a row of the upgraded cards. They range across the standard the standard cards from ace to king. There are also some special cards, another suit, but we get those at the end of the round.
We won't be getting them now. Well, it's kind of like deck-building anyway, right? Cuz that's what you do. You just add that usually at the end of the round. Yes. Each character has three special tokens that can be used. So, we'll see those as we come through, but one of them allows you to use that character's special power, and the other two are the same for all players.
And there's some special effects up here which influence the round as well. So, there'll be a two influence reward which can be shared among any players who forecast the same number of tricks or operations and succeed. There'll be a three influence reward for someone who wins zero tricks. And there'll be a bonus influence for every trick you win.
So, we're actually set up with a good first round here. It's going to put a lot of extra influence into the game, um allowing us to bid more aggressively in future rounds and so forth. Mhm. So, I say let's go straight into it and we'll look at our hands and decide our bids. Mhm. So, I'll talk through I'll talk through mine, uh so you can see the kinds of things I'm thinking of.
Here I'm playing as the blue player. I've got an extra card. That's my power, so I'll only play seven of these. I've got quite a few high yellows, but not a lot of 10s. I can probably win a few tricks out of this. It might be hard for me to lose tricks, but I've got I've got a few things up my sleeve there.
So, I reckon I can win a few. I will put three, I think. But then again, you can always adjust it until the very end. So, after you see other players putting their bids, then you can change yours. You can change the amount of bids you win and you can change the amount of influence you're bidding because, hey, you win if you have the most influence at the end of the game.
Indeed. Now, I can see I've got a lot of fours here. I can probably dodge winning anything and I know there's a extra reward for doing that, so I reckon I'll bid zero. This is a four-suit game, by the way. Yeah. I'm really I'm pretty confident that I can get zero. >> [laughter] >> Four is a big Yeah, I know.
I'm not so confident on blue. I feel like it could go a lot of ways, so maybe I'll drop that stake a bit. Mhm. Now, Mirage Now, Mirage has got Well, uh what do we say? It's pretty good. It's got good number a good range of suits as all. Well, actually no, it's only have one. So, it's probably somewhere in the middle.
And in there are four players and there are seven chances to win and looking at so far, you know, one is bidding at three bids and the other one at zero. So, it could probably be two. Let's just put that at two. It's kind of like a sensible middle or undecided middle, you know. Two and two. You can always come back and change it.
For example um for this what you've done before as well. Now, now Mimic has got 10 4 7 6 and it's got a one one blue and it's probably in mid-range as well. So, let's say if it's going to do to go after the same one. So, two and two. Now, I'm looking at two two two and zero. Well, there are seven, so there's no way.
Uh this is Sorry, three. So, it is possible that everyone could have double, you know, could double their influence back. Could win their influence. True. And it is uh beneficial for the doppelganger there as well. Um given I'm seeing a lot of low numbers, I'm actually thinking I might be able to to push it up a bit more.
So, I'm going to change that bit. And so, we do this in real time. Yes. Uh we until everyone is happy. Yep. And now we'll go into the into the round into the operations. So I've got the first player over here with Echo. Mhm. I mean, [clears throat] I can probably change this one as well if I want to, but just leave it as it is for now.
All right. So, Echo has no interest winning any tricks. So, let's lead low. Next one is Mirage. Mirage wants to win two. >> [clears throat] >> So, yeah, four. But look at this. There's only six nines and sevens. Obviously, no more trick-taking rules apply, so I have to follow suit if we have the right suit.
So, do seven. Mimic has got 4 6 9 5. Um it could win it, could not win it. It doesn't matter. Just put six. And excellent. That means I have a plenty of yellows. I can easily win this one with an eight. So, there we go. First operation down. I win the operation. I collect one of these tokens. And we discard these to our own discard piles.
That's cuz we need to keep We don't collect them. We need to keep our cards um separate. >> keep our own cards Cuz there are effects that would let you get your own discard pile. All right. Do I lock down some wins early? I can definitely win You want to win four times, so you probably want to keep winning.
I mean, try to at least. Well, I I think I can win it win it back later. And I know that I know that yellow that green is not going to try. Where you've got tied cards, earlier played breaks the tie. And Mirage will play and probably trying to win this one. Huh. Obviously, Mirage also trying to ruin other people's plan.
Technically, if possible. And well, Mimic has only one blue in this instance and will have to play this. Okay, so red wins the trick. If Look at that sixes, right? If this is a low number, then this will lose and this will lose the first one that played will win. But, in this case, 10 is the winner.
Okay. And we'll lead. So, it has got one of the two that it will need to win. So, it probably will need to try to lose. Let's lead with four blue. And Mimic then will try to do Oh, it has no blue, so it won't win. And it has won zero, so we'll try to put four yellow. Alka is down to a single blue. Might win this, but is going to do so if it plays there.
And Echo can play under with this four and continue the streak of not winning. So, Alka has won again and is already halfway. Yeah. That's good. Towards victory. I'm still a little concerned about winning too many, so I'm going to try playing well, as low as I have, which is mid-range. Uh Echo will play here.
That is once again under. Safely. Mirage will have to play this only green that it has, while Mimic could probably afford to win this one with 10 green. Okay. Okay. Next one. And Mimic then will lead with five yellow. That suits Alka. Uh we'll play 10 yellow to lock that one down more than likely. Uh which also suits Echo who can play that nine under it.
And Mirage will play six yellow. All right, I'm up to three. Ooh, it's getting closer. It does get more tense usually near the end of the round where All right, you almost win your bid or lose your bid. I shall lead with the green nine. And then Echo can go under with the green four. This is easy time for Echo.
A very low hand. Yeah. Mirage will probably try to win one more trick, so we'll play this one. Mimic needs to win one more. and it can't win. And this is where I'm going to show you to use its own power. So, once per round, flip the agent token, the power agent power token, to designate any suit card as the intimidation suit, which is the red suit.
So, so it's using the green still, but changing it to the trump suit, basically. So, this will win. Yes. So, this is the first time I mentioned before that these cards don't come into play until later rounds, and it includes the red suit, which is a trump suit. However, Mimic's special ability is to turn a card into a trump suit.
It's the only way to get a trump in the first round. >> I mean, it's in the name anyway, Mimic, you know? Yes. It won't bite, but Indeed. So, this is a red seven, and red outranks any other color. So, that means Mimic wins this operation. Yep. And we'll wait the next one. And we'll wait the last one.
So, this >> Now, it's a it's an important time here. So, we're going to see who's going to be happy and who's not. Because this has got reached the quota. You need to one to win one more, and this one needs to win one more. Yep. And yellow would like a red to win. >> Yeah. Because that will unlock Doppelganger.
Green's pretty happy. Pretty sure green's fine. That's right. Uh ready? Yes. Nine yellow. Okay. So, >> six and nine yellow, which you cannot win. I cannot >> At the moment. Yes. So, cannot win with those. Would you take your lose, or you want to use any of the other tokens? I mean, you cannot not win.
Yes. So, what I will do, I'm pretty sure this is futile, cuz I think the card I need is already gone. But, I'm I'm to use my regroup token. Yes. So, I showed you a deck of 21 cards before and only drew seven. Mhm. What you can do with the regroup token is discard any number of cards and draw the same number.
And because of Alca's special power, I actually draw one more than I discarded. So, I can draw three cards looking for the yellow 10 that will beat this. I didn't get it. I kind of knew I wasn't going to get it cuz I'm pretty sure it's in my discard already. Yeah. So, that's a shame. Do you have to play the five yellow?
I must now play the five yellow because It's full of suit? Yes. Okay. Echo. Echo can play this without winning quite comfortably. It's a good round for Echo. Yeah. Well, Mimic wants to win and it won't win. It's nine. So, it will use the power of regrouping. So, this is discarded. I'm hoping what What are the chances, you know, they'll win?
I think it's a low chance that it will. One in 14. Ah. So, it's not Ghost. Ghosted is trying to not to win. And this is two. Flip that and draw one. No. No. No. So, that means these two won't win. You won't win. Only this is the only win. >> [laughter] >> Indeed. And so, I mean, that would have been Mimic did take a risk there.
Yeah. Uh Mimic could have spent the Ghost token. >> Yes. And what happens with the Ghost token is that you have to spend one of your influence, one of your points, in order to not play a card for that trick. >> Mhm. That probably would have been Probably not. >> Possibly would have been good for everybody.
But, you're only You're only risking a one stake there. >> it was it was worth a worth a flutter. Yeah. Yeah. But, there we go. We are done with the operations phase. And so, now we come to the debriefing phase. And we go around, we evaluate the winners. So, as I said earlier, so you should have won four, but you only won three.
I should have won two, but only won three. I should have won This one should have won two, but only won one. So, one winner, three losers. >> Yes, so all of this staked influence is gone. Gone. Gone. And then this one doubles, so the four. >> so wins four, goes to a good leading position. Very good.
Then we go through these. Doppelganger, if two agents forecast the same number of operations and succeed, they share a two influence reward. Did not happen. Yeah. Protocol zero, a reward of three influence for successfully getting zero operations. It goes in a good position. Oh, wow. But rogue informants gain one influence for each operation one.
So, not all is lost. Yeah. Uh, three. Yeah. One. >> One. And three. >> That's good. >> So, everyone's still got a fair bit to to bid on here. >> Mhm. Uh, hands are discarded. This is actually a good way to If you win this one, you get like a lots of things, you know? Yes. And now we will prepare for the next round.
So, first thing we do is remove the rewards. for the mission cards and event cards. And see what's coming up, cuz this might influence our next choices. So, here we've got case file five, you want to win exactly five. This one is winning exactly one, so like the zero protocol we just saw. And then we have stay low.
We have a a change to all the tricks in the next round that says the lowest number instead of the highest number wins. So, the suits are still in the same order. The trumps will still beat the non-trumps, but flip the cards. Fours Fours are high, tens are low. Mind twisting. See, I did say that it's twist like it's twist uh upon twists upon twists.
Yes, and so that will influence what we do with these cards, which we're now about to gain. Now, in addition to gaining these cards, we also have the chance to thin out our decks by getting rid of low cards or cards we don't want. And that, I guess, with this stay low is a little bit of a iffy strategy here right now.
But, you get that chance. So, we will definitely gain two cards and we may get rid of >> [snorts] >> two cards. Doing them one at a time, so Mimic won the last operation. Mimic chooses first. So, I have a full selection of what I want to trash, but you know, in this round you want to win by the low number cards, but you we don't know what happens in the next round, right?
For example. So, do I want to do that or not? But, it's always good to to get like a a more reliable card. Like, I can see good cards over there. So, you know what? I'm going to I'm going to discard one card. 10 blue. 10 blue is gone from the distribution and then I will take the Alpha Strike. So, this is a good card.
This is basically a trump where the high or low that is required. Yes, this is the It's not a red card per se and you can actually play it without following suit. It's one of the special cards, but it is the highest card. It automatically wins unless there was already an Alpha Strike played. Yep. Okay, Al card is going to take the red fixer king.
This is a very high card. This is the the highest trump excluding Alpha Strike except in next round. It also has the benefit that if I win with it, I gain an influence token. So, it's a way of generating some points. So, I quite like that. And let's thin out a mid-range card, a six or a seven because uh doesn't doesn't doesn't give you the certainty of winning or losing.
Uh Echo is going to go the other way. This well, almost the other way. This is an ace. You can play ace high or low uh Blackjack kind of style. If you play it high, it's essentially like a higher king. If you play it low, uh then whoever wins that in the trick is going to lose an influence. So, >> Mhm.
Uh I feel like that's a nice >> nice little nasty card. And let's go I gained a green, so I'm going to thin out something that's not green. >> Yeah. Now, Mirage doesn't like what's available, so I'm just going to take it from here and then show to everyone. It's an alpha strike. >> Lucky alpha strike.
Mimic will also discard. Uh a mid-range card, maybe a a yellow. Yellow five. There you go. Okay, and then we go around a second time. And back to Mimic will also take a card from here. It's a skunk bomb. Ooh. Skunk bomb is another one of these special cards. It destroys a trick. No one wins it. All the cards just go away.
It's so cool. It's like you drop the skunk bomb like, "Oh my god, so smelly." And everyone runs away and they abandon the battle. Yes. >> Yeah. That's exactly how it works. Even from the alpha strike airplane. >> Okay. [laughter] All right. Discarding? Um good point. So, this is a green card, but it is unsuited.
So, you know what? I'm just going to discard a green five just because. Okay. Uh Alca's going to take this this trump. It's still useful as a trump. And it's not going to discard anything else. So, Alca has that ability to draw more cards. So, I don't have to worry as much about thinning out my deck.
Uh this suits Echo's strategy. I wanted to go big on green and thin out the rest. So, >> Ooh. that works well. As in like it's going to go zero winning bid? We'll see. Mhm. Mirage, obviously, this only option is to pull one from the deck, which is a ghost move. This is the third of the special cards that have no suit.
This is the losing card, so you can play this and be guaranteed of losing the trick. >> Yes. All right. And it will um it will discard a Oh. Let's see, maybe a four blue. Cool. Okay. And then we would deal a new set of these cards so that we know what we're uh potentially getting at the end of the second round, and we would shuffle everything back up.
Yes. Shuffle everything back up. Deal new hands and go to the next round. Uh we're going to play for a four-player game, so it's going to be five rounds. If it's two or three players, going to be six rounds. But, the next round will take you to the last round, so you'll see more chaos. What, you know, what else could happen at that last round?
Welcome to round five, the last round, the final countdown, where we seems to have I mean, how we do it two-handed? Just pretend that this happens, so you have zero influence and lots of influence over there, three and a few. Yes. So, few things to note here. So, everything is reset. All of these tokens always All flipped.
>> to being available. >> Yes. Uh blue is out of influence. Things have gone very badly for blue. And I'm not out of the game, but in this uh land of spies, I need to gain some leverage from elsewhere. So, this is essentially a loan that I get if I'm out. Yeah. Lets me take uh five influence. But, if I can't pay that back by the end of the game, it's negative eight.
So, it's a bad place to be. Uh it's probably going to be hard to catch up, but that's fine. I can cause some disruption. Yeah. The other thing to look at is the events here. So, we've got fallback move. Normally, the ghost token, that's the one that allows you to simply not play a card and not win a trick.
Normally, you can use that once, but here we can use it twice. Nice. There is a reward of three influence if you win both the first and the last trick of the round. Mhm. So that will be interesting. And then there's a fun one here. This is agent betrayal. All agent power tokens are gathered >> [gasps] [laughter] >> shuffled up and redistributed.
Okay. So Alca is still Alca. So I'll draw that extra card that I'm allowed [laughter] to. Echo now has Mimic's power. Okay, which is you know, you can just flip it to get a suit of your >> Make a card yeah. And Mirage is has got Echo's So Mirage has got Echo's power. Which is to swap a card from hand with card in discard.
Yeah. And Mimic has got a Mirage power. Which is to not follow suit. Yeah. Now let's let's bid. So I'm looking like oh what a terrible hand here. So >> not. Well there's lots of there's lots of weak cards here. I can probably I can probably work out how to win. But what I can do I showed you using the regroup before.
I don't even have to wait until Yeah. until the round is going. So I'm just going to discard my five generic cards and draw six. >> Nice. Hopefully I'll get some strong cards that will let me have some >> got what? Nine now? I have nine cards in hand cuz of the Alca power. Still not very confident there.
I'm going to bid two and I might as well uh Well you've got nothing to lose. >> stake the farm. Okay. Skunk bomb, low cards, one jack. Yeah, that's >> bad. I'm going to play the miser game again. Looking over at your influence. I better I better stake uh, more here. >> Oh, okay. You can always change it.
I can. Let's have a look at Mirage's cut hands. Ghost moves rude alpha strike. Might want to win something. I mean, considering it's got alpha strike, it might not want to win it. So, let's say, uh, what's what's that now? Zero? What is this? >> Zero and two. Two. I'm going to just do a two again, I think.
So, everyone's trying to win the first one and the last one, probably. Yeah. And now, Mimic has got screw fixer, raccoons. Oh, it's got bomb. That's That's good. That's an interesting one. It's going to go probably on two as well. So, oh, I haven't actually do this. So, let's just go all in again with a three.
Because, why not? Yeah. And, technically, I probably want to count or not, but it will probably do this. Yeah. I might actually hold one back because it will give me the chance to pay for a ghost move. That's actually a good point. Yeah. That can still change it. Do you want to change it? Anything is changing?
No, I think that'll be it. Let's do it. All right. Echo is trying to win nothing. Let's play low. Let's. Mirage is trying to win probably the first trait, but we'll see if it can or not. Look, it it's got yellow, but trying to win the first one, so alpha strike it is. It can It doesn't have to follow suit yellow.
Well, Mimic, look at that. It's like, uh, yeah, I think. Looks like uh, looks like Mirage is going to win. You know what? Stuff you, say Mimic. Mimic cannot win anything. Mimic's going to play it's scumbag. So, if Mimic can't win, no one else can win. All right. So, that basically ruins that he can't play.
>> [laughter] >> Uh, and Alca has has to follow suit anyway. So, that goes there. This trick is obliterated. That's discarded. [laughter] It's so smelly. Everyone runs away. Yes. And we go back to Echo. Yeah, so one's actually getting uh being discarded cuz no one will be able to win. Yes. Yeah. Goes to the goes to the universe.
All right. All right. You know, I did the scumbag just because, you know, make it more interesting, right? It has no green, so I'll just play a red 10. Mimic. Has green and will play green four. And Alchemist follow green. This one's a better green to keep, so we'll play that seven. So, the operation goes to Mirage.
>> Yes. No special cards there other than the trumps, so everything stays friendly. Yeah. Go to Mirage. Mirage will use the power of Echo, which is flipping this to retrieve a card from discard pile. It's retrieving the Alpha Strike. And it will start with eight yellow. We'll play shrew. Makes the winning agent lose one influence token.
Now, this is a tricky play. I could I certainly don't want to play this shrew because then I would be winning because it's a trump and then I would lose even more influence. I could still win it with this one. I would gain an influence and then lose it. Um but I'm certain that Echo's not going to try to win.
And I do need to win two tricks, so I am going to play this fixer. So, you're winning that now? >> So, I'm winning it. But, you're going to lose it. >> two will essentially cancel each other, something like that. Yeah. And that makes life easy for Echo. Cast off a high card. And win. Yeah. And uh does not does not win cuz the trump will have This >> one here, this is uh it's a Jack, it's an 11.
It's a way to refresh your regroup tokens. If you win with a Jack, you will get an extra regroup. Yeah. Which is quite flexible. But in any case, this is a win to Elka and gain one influence for the fixer, lose it for the shrew. Yeah. Now, I will try to I'll see if I can win with this green. I couldn't I could uh destroy the trick, but I think it they'll be funnier opportunities to do it later.
I know I can play that under and not win. Mhm. And it doesn't have the green suit and it will play shrew means that the winning agent lose one influence token. And Mimic Mimic will play seven green. Okay, so Elka wins this operation. It's got two already. Yep, again there is a king which would be to gain one influence, but also a shrew which means to lose it.
>> [laughter] >> Just neutralize themselves. I've just got uh fixers coming in dealing with all the shrew's messes. All right. Um I do not want to win and I am not confident that that won't happen. So, I am going to play my ghost. Yeah. So, I pay one influence, flip over the ghost. Remember I can use it twice this round if I want, and then I just don't play.
That means Echo now has to lead the trick, and Echo doesn't want to win anything. There's a skunk bomb there as protection, but I also have confidence that these two are trying to win cuz there's enough tricks left for both of them to win. So, It's true. I'm going to regroup discard to to draw two. Uh I was hoping they would be weaker >> [laughter] >> cards.
Uh so, I'm just going to scuttle bomb this one. Oh, okay. So, this is time to not win, like just discard a card. Yes, but Mirage will set the uh will set the suit that Mimic will have to follow. All right, we'll just play a nine yellow. And Mimic just going to play ace yellow. So, normally it's either ace, which is going to win, or one, but scuttle bomb means no one wins.
Okay. So, there's So, one is gone. And the lead comes back to Alca. So, Alca is still desperately trying to not win any tricks. I saw Mirage pick up a an alpha strike before, so I think I'm fine. But, if I throw that shrew out there, uh that might not be encouraging, so this may feel like quite a risk, but I mean, they've already got leverage over me, so Okay, I can play speedy under that.
That's the one that refreshes the regroup if you win. And Mirage And just to point out, that's if you win specifically with that card, so yeah, if any of the other players win, they don't get that effect. It's trying to win the last trick potentially for extra influence, but you won because you only get extra influence if you won both both of them, but no one wins the first one because of the scuttle bomb.
Mimic can't win, so we'll play shrew, which loses the winning I get agent one influence. So, Mirage wins the wins that, but loses an influence. And we go to the final trick. And last round Mirage will play Well, Mirage has got two bidding on two, so we'll play the ghost move. While Mimic only can play this, the fixer.
Okay, uh I have to follow suit with blue here. I would like to throw a shrew there, but can't actually that one have me win. >> Actually, yep. And this doesn't win, so perfect. >> So, this does function as 13s. Gain one Gain one influence token from headquarter when winning with this card. So, there you go.
All right. Mhm. And so, that's it. We don't need to gain new cards this time. No one took the first and last trick, so we pay out the influence. Uh Alca successfully gained two, so that's a payout of four and enough to pay back this leverage token to finish with three influence. Echo 1 2 3 4 5 [laughter] six influence to add to this very large pile.
Well Well done. Well, Mimic didn't win, so I'll lose all of these. Well, Merit wins two, as predicted. And there we have it. We count up the influence, and I think it's fairly clear that Echo has won the game. Well done, Echo. And we're going to show you other cards as well available in this one, how the chaos will kind of like tip the scales a little bit sometimes.
Yes, we showed almost every one of the special cards. We showed how Speedy will allow you to refresh a regroup token. Uh the queen is the only one we didn't see in action, which is you draw an extra card from the deck when you win with the queen. Uh but this deck of special cards, it has a whole lot of shrews.
It has all the red cards. It also has duplicates. There are some weak cards here, so there are some duplicates of the starting cards, which you know, when you go digging from the deck randomly, you might get stuck with. Yeah. Yeah. There's always a risk there, right? >> there. And then it's always changed up by these missions as well.
So, when gaining reinforcements, draw three and keep one if drawing blindly. Whoever wins a trick or operation chooses who leads the next one instead of leading themselves.
