Kelp | How to Play | Learn to Play in 12 Minutes!
hello everybody my name is Elia and my name is Tyler together we make up Cy a couple that loves to play board games and today we'll be teaching you how to play kelp kelp Shark versus Octopus this game is designed by Carl Robinson its art is done by weberon Santiago and it's published by wonderbow games who helped sponsor this video in this game you'll take the role of either the shark or the octopus the shark's objective is to eat the octopus the octopus objective is to escape and wait till the shark is exhausted or to eat some blocks eat some blocks yeah the four food blocks food food or eat some food now let's head over to the table and learn how to play as always you'll begin by setting up you'll first choose which of you will play as the shark and as the octopus you'll then place the board in the middle of the table with the octopus and the shark sides corresponding to the player playing them let's start with the shark you'll fill the shark's dice bag with seven blue currents dice three yellow search Dice and one red strike D the remaining dice will form the supply nearby you'll Shuffle the shark deck deal four cards face up in the designated row and then you'll place four growth tiles face up above the cards in the corresponding order you'll Place three confrontation cards for both the octopus and the shark off to the side of the board now for the octopus setup you'll first remove all starter cards with the tentacle symbols you'll then separate the Cards into Color Shuffle each pile individually and place all four piles face up next to the board facing the octopus player you'll place the matching food block on the eat card and set aside the following blocks the three food blocks one shell block one double shell and these three traps you'll place the remaining nine blocks into the octopus bag shake the bag shuffling the blocks and draw one at a time placing them upright in the block spaces on the main board from top to bottom left to right as the octopus you'll always start with the fast learning card you'll Shuffle the remaining starting cards and draw three to a full hand of four you'll place the hand size token on the four above the deck lastly the octopus player will place the shark on one of the four dens on the current space pointing to the center of the board you're now ready to play the octopus will take the first turn each player plays the game differently and has a different game end objective let's go over both the octopus and the shark wind conditions and turns as the octopus You'll Play cards and attempt to survive and thrive in the kelp forest most of your cards will come at a cost of revealing blocks on the board you'll win the game by either outlasting the shark or by feasting on all four food blocks now as you may have noticed you as the octopus player can see the blocks while the shark player will not until they've been revealed on your turn as the octopus you must take two actions there are three actions you can choose from and yes you can perform the same action twice if you wish let's go over the three actions play a card You'll Play a card from your hand and pay the cost which is usually revealing hidden blocks on the main board you may reveal any block and if you reveal the double shell block it counts as two blocks revealed after revealing the blocks you'll now take the effect of the card there's four different types of cards you'll see move cards allow you to move blocks around the board you can do this by swapping or shuffling swapping simply means exchanging two orthogonally adjacent blocks with each other they have to remain in the same state as they were before hidden staying hidden and revealed staying revealed shuffling means taking a specifi number of hidden blocks placing them into the octopus bag shuffling them and then revealing a block ensuring it's kept secret from the shark the shark player will then decide where this block is placed you'll do this until all blocks have been placed hide is another subset of cards these allow you to stand your blocks up again hiding them from your opponent learn cards give you the ability to improve your skills enhancing your deck or often adding new blocks to the board for example a card with learn two will allow you to either gain two cards two blocks or a card and a block when you gain a card you'll place it face up in your discard pile you'll see this card again when the deck runs out and the discard pile is shuffled to form a new deck when you gain a block you must exchange it with a revealed block on the board new blocks always enter the game revealed octopus and food blocks may not be removed from the board this way the last type of card we'll talk about are eat cards these are one of the most important cards because if you play all four and eat all four food blocks you'll you win the game now in order to eat a food block it must first be in play which happens when you learn an eat card then you must position the octopus block adjacent to the food block and have the matching card in your hand if you meet these requirements as an action you may play the eat card reveal the food block and octopus remove the food block and place it on the food track fill the empty space with a spare shell block and finally remove the eat card from the game each food block comes with a free effect you can use the food blocks effect as soon as you obtain it you'll flip it face down once the effect has been used as it can only be used once these effects can increase your hand size to five search for a specific card to add to your hand hide all revealed blocks and learn up to three for free those are the four types of cards You'll Play the move hide learn and eat card the next action is draw back up to your hand size you must do this if you run out of cards it may be helpful to place the hand size token on the action space to remind yourself that you've used the draw cards action The Last Action you can choose from is discard one card from your hand then hide one block it's as simple as that as a reminder the octopus does not draw cards at the end of their turn drawing is an action and if you were to draw but your draw pile is empty Shuffle the discard pile to form a new draw pile that's the octopus now let's talk about the shark as the shark you'll utilize dice to swim around the kelp forest in aiming to search for and strike the octopus hoping to defeat them in the final confrontation the shark's turn has several steps let's go over them now you'll first draw and roll you'll draw two dice from the bag and roll them once the rolled dice form your dice pool which you can utilize in later steps there's three types of dice currents search and strike blue dice or currents dice allow you to place currents so you can swim faster across the board yellow dice or search dice allow you to search for the octopus by revealing blocks and finally red dice or strike dice allow you to strike meaning you may attack an adjacent block where you think the octopus may be after drawing and rolling the next step is to place currents you can place the blue dice you rolled on any empty current spaces you may also choose to keep them for the end of the turn and convert them into energy which we'll chat about in a moment the next step is move the shark must move move each turn typically you'll only move one space in the direction you are facing however here is where you can utilize currents to move further you can use one or more currents dice but the dice have to make a path with no empty spaces in between and they have to be decreasing As you move through them these don't have to be in a row but the next die must be lower than the last used when you land on an empty current space you finish your movement if you used any current dice you'll place the first one you used on the growth track the amount of dice used doesn't matter only the first die gets placed if any current dice were used the next step is search or strike if you rolled these dice you'll be able to utilize them in hopes of tracking down the whereabouts of the octopus you'll place these dice onto the space adjacent to your shark the value of each die must be equal to or greater than the Zone value otherwise you may not place there only one die may be placed on each of the Zone value spaces when you search you'll utilize a yellow die you can only search zones with hidden blocks you'll reveal the hidden block and place the yellow dice on the growth tile track strike Works a little differently you'll place the dice again making sure it's equal to or greater than the Zone value your aim here is to strike the octopus you can strike a hidden tile or the revealed octopus tile if you strike an octopus tile you'll proceed to a confrontation in a confrontation both the octopus and shark have three cards they can play the octopus trying to evade the shark and the shark aiming to succeed the strike both players will secretly choose a card and reveal at the same time if the shark counters the octopus's strategy card they immediately win the game if not the octopus escapes utilizing the effect on the card if the octopus escapes you'll discard the octopus card and the matching strike card from the game increasing the odds of a successful counter for the next confrontation now if you strike and the octopus is not there you'll place the red Dy at the bottom of the hunger track where it will remain until the end of the game while searching or striking you can also trigger a trap there's a variety of effects that traps trigger sometimes helping the octopus hide blocks move the shark back to its den or even discard your current dice on the board that's the dice now let's look at the growth track once three dice are placed above the growth tile in this step you'll return the dice to the bag and flip the growth tile now activating the ability these abilities will generally help you be a better shark in the instant when all growth tiles are active the dice will all go back to the bag instead of to the growth track now as a last step you'll place any remaining dice you did not use into the stored energy area then if you have one or two dice in stored energy you may buy new cards however if you have three dice there you must buy new cards the sum of the Pips on the energy dice regardless of the color can be utilized to buy face up cards from the board if you don't want any of the cards you can decrease one of your energy dice by one pip and refresh the row you're able to buy more than one card if you can afford it and once you buy a card it'll be replaced immediately so you can even purchase the card that replaced the one you just bought when bought you'll first add the dice at the bottom of the card to your dice bag from the supply you'll then hang on to the card and wait to use it at the right time to support your actions spending energy and buying cards makes you hungrier regardless of the number of cards you purchased you'll choose one of the stored energy Dice and move it to the next empty space on the hunger track the other dice if any will be returned back to the dice bag you'll want to pay attention to the hunger track because if you fill it you'll lose the game and that's the shark's turn you'll keep taking turns until either the octopus wins by eating all the food the octopus wins by having the shark fill the hunger track or the shark wins by successfully striking the octopus and winning the confrontation who will win in your game the shark or the octopus thank you so much for watching if you have any questions leave them in the comments down below we'd love to answer them mhm and of
