Spokes | Playthrough
hi everyone I'm Tom and today I'm going to be playing spokes which is a vome racing kind of game where we're going to be racing against each other on this track using each other slipstreams trying to take advantage of opportunities the board's giving us and basically coming first in the race there are three laps in the standard race I'm playing a two-player game today against little glass Marty who you wouldn't think it but it's an excellent bicyclist this is coming up on Kickstarter from radical 8 games I'll put a link to the campaign page in the corner of the screen and in the description go over there to see all the final stuff this is a prototype but it should give you a very good idea of what the game is like I'd recommend you turn on the klling on subtitles to catch any mistakes I might have made thanks Steve and with that said I think we are ready to race now here is our track it's populated with all of these colored sticks and these are going to be the roots that we are using to race around these were just randomly put onto the board from a bag each player also has one of each of the different colors randomly put out on their board at the start we have a slip streaming tile that's inactive at the moment Marty's going to be our first player so on your turn you need to move your track marker one two or three spaces anticlockwise so we are racing anticlockwise we take turns in an anticlockwise order for your first turn though you can place it anywhere you like Marty's seen an opportunity in the placement here and I kind of have too cuz we could choose where we start in this so as the first player Marty's going to choose to start here he is just going to move one spot after you finish moving the last spoke you moved over comes out of your board and you can replace it with any of the spokes that are on the board you're trying to make a nice unbroken stretch of the same color though so Marty is going to swap out this pink one here the pink one that he took out goes onto his board and then you move your bike these cylinders are representing our bikes Marty is representing Japan of course you move your bikes along a single unbroken stretch of the same color so Marty has now made a great big stretch of white here and can get a nice Head Start there and it comes over to MIT so I saw what Marty was planning so I thought it would be nice to start with white as well and since there was another white here I can actually follow Marty's track and actually make an even better move I am going to go and swap out this yellow here so now I have an unbroken stretch of white going all the way up to here and I'm thinking for a future turn maybe I can do pink because pink is three spokes away so the yellow I just swapped out goes onto my player board I'm going to move my bike all the way along in front now if it had happened that whatever route I was taking would take me onto someone else's space you can move through them no problem but if you would end on their space you actually have to stop one space before them but you get to activate your slip streaming TI giving you an adrenaline rush in a future turn you can flip this back in the future to pretend that any one piece that you move over is a different color to get to swap one as normal you move forward has to be the color that you just placed that you move along but if I'd had it right at the start I could maybe move all the way up here I could have treated this pink as if it was white just as a one-off and then it would flip back no slip streaming happen just yet though because I managed to get in front of Marty so he had a big start but he's maybe not in as good a position as me now so he can move one two or three so it's green pink or yellow yellow's not really going to get him anywhere at all pink could get him slightly forwards green again just slightly forwards oh no what am I talking about he can do a great big move on pink so he's going to move one two he will take pink out and he'll swap out this white pop pink in there and I am planning to move on pink later Marty is taking the opportunity now he's going to zip up here and move all the way along end up there I'm going to stick with my plan to move one two three pop this pink out and my route is broken up by this blue here it is but what if I if I swap this green out I could actually go further couldn't I cuz there's actually a nice green opportunity coming up as well ooh yeah I'm going to go that could end up outside but no I want to go there you can stop at any point you don't have to go along the exact full route you just have to have moved over the spoke that you just placed so you going just be swapping things for no reason okay Marty oh he has a nice chance on the light blue here one two three he's going to take this blue out and pop it here here so that goes back in his board and he's going to zip along here ending up there yeah not on the outside so I'm thinking of green I'm going to go one two pop this green out and I am going to swap this pink out for it and zip all the way along here and we're right back at that amazing white stretch but I haven't got any white in my player board so that might end up being a problem for me Marty can go for green as well catch up on the opportunity I kind of left him he hasn't got any light blue so he's actually going to swap that one just so he's got opportunities in the future maybe and he's going to zip along here and yeah he would end up on my space so he has to step back unless he wants to end up here cuz he does have white he's going to stay where he is because he can possibly do a big jump with white so he's going to flip his slipstream tile to the adrenaline rush side and he's got the opportunity to use that in a future turn as for me I can do yellow dark blue light none of it's going to get me moving very far is it I think we go 1 two three for the light blue we're not really going to disrupt the white very much and I just get to move a couple of spots putting me onto lap two but then next time we're right in front of this big pink stretch and pink is three away so hopefully that'll work out Marty is just going one step on the white and he can actually do a little bit of disruption here he is going to swap out for one of the pink pieces although he's got a lot of pink in his spokes now he will use his adrenaline rush to pretend that this yellow is a white piece and so he can go all the way around to here he's on lap two as well now so when it comes to me I'm going to stick with the plan of pink three spaces there but I'm going to have to swap Marty's piece back out to end up at the end of this somewhere if he hadn't done that I would have been able to go you know one further swapping it further down the line so I think actually oh if we stay in the middle here there's a nice opportunity for changing this to White next time and zooming right around but I wouldn't have a pink to keep going oh oh but again Marty can get in the way a little bit he is going to go one two three for pink and he is going to swap out that white piece to try and slow me down a little bit that goes in here but I think he's going to end up a little bit stuck so now I think after a really fast start to the lap it's going to slow down a little bit I'm still going to go to White so swap Marty's pink right back out and I am just just going to end up down here Marty would love green but he hasn't got it he's got pink blue pink he is just going to move 1 two 3 and Swap this out for a pink and just move one measly step but he's now in range of white and he's got that big white run for next time so hopefully he can start moving again I've got access to white as well but I'm miles away from it I think my plan was to go green and swap that in there and move quite a few spaces and I can poten potentially get back on that white track nearly on lap three Marty is going for it 1 two three he'll swap out this one although it's kind of helping me as well and zip along onto his third lap I'm going to have to use my placement to get me onto that same track so I am going to end up on his space again so I get my adrenaline rush Marty is going to go for blue although I think pink might have taken into the same space he is going to zip all the way around here and stop in that space and I think green might just get him there next time I think he's just going to beat me so I was hoping he was going to do pink and I would just make the route a little bit longer on my turn but I've just gone past blue what if we got yellow we're not going to get far with that dark blue not really pink is really the only chance oh if i' had the blue to swap in I could have swapped this out and messed with him a bit and given myself a chance but I don't think I can I think getting me the closest will be the pink so I can pop that in there Zoom around I've kind of left myself with few color options as well haven't I really I can use my adrenaline rush to get me here pretending that's a pink or I'm on lap three as well but then Marty is right in range of a green he can swap out this one because the route is already made for him move through me and that is the completion of the third lap and Marty wins the race and that is a very quick race of SP folks this is the standard way of playing it plays up to six players and as you can imagine as the game goes to higher player counts there will be more and more swapping and changing of these routes at four and six players you can play a team mode where the rules are the same as soon as a player from that team crosses the Finish Line at lap three that team wins but you can be coordinating Roots You might want to leave the other player there is a solo challenge where you get an extra set of six differently colored spokes in a supply and when you change one from the main board you discard it instead and put one from your supply onto the board instead eventually spokes from your player board are going to end up disappearing and you skip over spaces in that case your challenge is can you complete three laps with just these 12 spokes so this has been the standard mode I'm going to do another game where I play with the two bike variant so this is just the standard mode it would work the same with two to six players if you
