If you want a game that blends the world of board games and role- playinging games, well then Pathfinder Quest just launched. You can either build a custom character by choosing your ancestry, background, and class, or you can play as a pre-made iconic character if you want to just jump in. This is a cooperative narrative campaign game, and there's a lot of storytelling and branching paths. You'll open the adventure book to an encounter and follow the setup. Limited spoilers here. Encounters will often have a mix of exploration challenges and combat challenges. For an exploration challenge, you'll read the entry in the adventure book and roll dice according to your class level card for that skill type. Every dot on a dice is a success. Then you'll open up the challenge book and read an entry based on how successful your dice rolling was. For instance, if there's a bunch of horses freaking out and I roll well, well, I calm them down. I'm very soothing. But if I roll poorly, they crash into a building and bring a whole awning down.

So, there's a lot of branching stories, and you have to deal with the consequences as you move forward. You'll also engage in a lot of combat. One cool thing is the turn sequence in combat changes by shuffling up these initiative cards and laying them out in a row. Then, we'll take turns in card order. Heroes will roll dice and use weapons to attack bad guys, and bad guys are going to hit back. The more time you spend on various exploration challenges and combat, the harder it will make future encounters. But one nice thing is your heroes level up between adventures and get stronger. This is a game that's all about the narrative storytelling. It's like an RPG, but nobody has to play as the game master. The books do all of the work for you. Pathfinder Quest is on backer kit now. link in my link tree.
