hahaha [Music] hello I'm Adam and welcome to board game club where the first ruler board game club is it's not who you know it's what you know about who you know every week we gather a group of our friends here at drafts Board Game Cafe in London to play a board game show you how much fun board gaming can be and this time we're playing Hollywood 1947 designed by Travis Hancock and published by facade games who sent us this Advanced copy thank you very much it's a beautiful game set in a disturbing time in American history where McCarthyism was rampant and people were being accused of being communist left right and center it's a social deduction game where some people will be playing Patriots trying to make patriotic movies and some will be Communists secret Reds trying to instill propaganda into the films that we are making there will also be one character who is a rising star who doesn't actually care about patriotism or communism they just want to be in as many movies as possible and will be playing both sides up against each other so every player will be dealt their loyalty face down the Communists will know who each other are the Patriots won't know who anyone is ditto the rising star then we start making movies in this case we're making a horror movie and making a movie comes in three phases first there is pre-production every player around the table will have a job in this case screenwriter actress editor composer there are other roles to be had and they activate in numerical order starting with one and ending with nine so starting with the one player they have three choices to do on their turn they can either use their job which is you know pretty important they can swap their job if they they want with one from The Middle or they can re-roll any two of these dice around the table now these dice either are black or they contain a star and we'll see why that's important in a little bit but let's say I'm going to on my turn re-roll two of these dice I don't trust you so I don't want you to have a star but I do trust you I want you to have a starter I'm going to re-roll these and hope for the best I've taken you out of the movie and I've put you in that was the best it could have gone after this phase is complete then comes the premiere and this is why these stars are important see everyone who has a star on their dice can contribute one of their cards to making the movie so for example let's say this player is good they're gonna place a patriot card face down of course so no one knows what's been played but there are all sorts of cards as Patriots there's Communists double Communists which is really bad so these two players are making the movie so they're each gonna put one in plus random one and then these are shuffled and then we'll just simply count up the symbols to decide whether or not the film is Patriot or communist so in this case that is neutral one communist and one patriotic now this horror film was already fairly communist I'm not entirely sure why uh so that's three communist symbols one Patriot and a neutral counts as neither or it counts as one for both sides but you might as well just count as nice it's easier than my head to be doing that so this film is a communist film we place this little shield on top of it to remind us how many communist films we had if there are four communist films made Communists instantly win if there are four Patriot films made the Patriots instantly win however if there's three communists three Patriots and you go down to a seventh film and that ends in a tie or a close Victory then that is a victory for the rising star and that's the entire game we'll be making movies we'll be playing cards trying to work out who's Patriot who's communist and who's in it for themselves and we'll see which team emerges Victorious who will be the brave Boys in blue who will be a Red Menace find out as we play Hollywood 1947.

it's Hollywood welcome to this episode of board game club and joining me it's Sullivan hey it's Brooke boys wow it's Dominic Allen throws with you okay it's Rosie hello and it's well Laurie yeah hi hello so we're playing Hollywood 1947 set in the glitz and glamor of Hollywood in 1947. that's some hot shot hosting right there I'll take three three points can I start with any of the other ones so Summer's gonna be secret Communists we're going to be making movies is the main Crux of this uh the Patriots are going to try and make patriotic movies the Communists are going to try making communist movies for Patriot movies Patriot wins full communist movies communist wins The Rising Star wins by basically getting us to the seventh movie and basically having it be a tie the rising star is playing both sides off against each other the rising star just wants to be in the movies so speaking of loyalty let's find out who everyone is right now good spread thank you appreciate you all right take your card that you want on three two one size I know who I am I didn't look there I was looking at you all right I've seen it don't worry we're now going to assign jobs because uh these movies have three phases you have pre-production where everyone does their jobs you have the movie premiere which is when people play cards to determine whether or not it's Patriots or communist and then you have post-production which normally comes before a movie premiere but hey ho uh right everyone take the job that you want oh good job not the case of the Justice League so oh very nice so let's go around and say who we all currently are uh it's not in the united I'm the director you require these tokens yes because you can give a token to anyone and they can cash in their token to add an extra card into the movie wonderful give them a bit more weight you basically have your your precious little ones no your little your little famous so you keep casting over and over and over and over and over again thanks Tim Burton there's no point anyone else's name uh Rosie you are the producer oh yes uh you can swap two job cards of anyone around the table very nice horrible I mean the gaffer uh I can re-roll these Dice and I'll explain what these means I'm the gaffer I'm sticky yes uh you I'm the actor yes yes I've known on this channel for being able to do a a great Michael Kane impression I I can do other Impressions I see right now you know who I'm doing dude oh Jimmy Stewart yeah I haven't got the money in traffic Bill's house and Joe's house hey hey you on the moon how to style that surrounded and pull it on down for you hey you met my friend Harvey he's a tall rabbit he's about six feet tall that's Jimmy hello actress I'm equal to Coram and equal professionalism as the actress it's his eye I get to draw some cards that's what you learn to drama school isn't that yes and is you I'm the composer which means all the music irrespective of genre will be the Pink Panther theme [Applause] [Applause] uh so you're all gonna have three of these cards these are either cards or they're communist cards literally like a place yeah let me give this job yeah enjoy before we start the first movie one final bit of business everyone close your eyes if you at home would not like to know who is a communist then you can close your eyes too Communists open your eyes and find each other I'm not the thing Communists close your eyes and everyone including you at home open your eyes there we go all right so we are starting the first movie we do not have a screenwriter a screenwriter gets to pick two of these and pick one so we're going into it all right so here is a movie we are making it is a comedy I'm making a Judd Apatow film uh so it's a comedy um it is already incredibly patriotic so there are this film currently has two patriots symbols it will be accruing symbols when people play these cards and uh one thing I forgot to do everyone roll this dice which will tell you if you start in the movie or not yes we haven't got a script we haven't got actors and I'm the only one in the movie I'm in the movie I may not be in front of the camera but this movie's gonna look beautiful I'm gonna do I've got lights look here's one that's that's one of mine I've and that's one and we've also got that one over there and these ones don't worry I'm on the case I'm a gaffer here's how we can fix this on your turn you can uh do your action which is your job uh you can swap your job for one of these if you don't like your current job or you can re-roll any two dice around the table that's all you do in pre-production your job changed your job or throw some dice and it starts with the person who has the lowest number which is a producer Rosie Bruckheimer over here thank you um I wanna I mean you need a producer in the movie yeah you need a producer let's try and get a producer so you're all you're rolling your dice you're in the movie this movie's getting made actions um actor actress what are the powers I can draw two cards and put one face down into the movie which you can do anyway regardless of your dice your dice is simply whether or not you play cards whether you want the Pink Panther theme in the movie or not that's what this is the thing is more that you'll use your power you need to Star on your dice because otherwise on your turn you might use your turn to re-roll your dice and not use your power instead so if you get something so I can star on their dice they're more likely to use their power yeah it helps well let's do that then all right but you've already used oh no but I can roll over here way I think you're listening properly no it's different to the last one it's different though don't just do the creamy rolls it's too I I'm I'm three Euros uh so uh Laurie yes you are the director I am the director what would you like to do on your turn I want to be in a movie I don't want lights in the movies what's your pitch um you need an actress it's a great time for women in comedy please Sullivan I much more respect your opinion what are you going to say producer I'm role playing yeah bad time for men in comedy thank you though uh and now it's me uh I am actually going to swap my ROM wait we're getting them through these dinosaurs enough you don't need me I'm going to become an editor editor is wonderful so now we don't have lights yeah we're shooting the new Batman film apparently crucially I don't get to do my power this turn I've used my turn to uh get this power even though it would happen right at the end I can't do it because I have changed and I also can't reroll on the dice which means we move on to the person after the gap which is five no six actress what would you like to do uh please let me be in the movie please let me be I can't believe it uh there is no room for women in comedy at all it's absolutely ridiculous I know it has to do with the dice but it does feel intensely personal you know what if a woman's not going to be in the film neither is a band we will have music what a weird comedy I saw you coming yeah [Laughter] he walks in the room I paid for that guy again well I want to be in the movie see in the movies try it out there I don't want any rook in this movie come on let's hear that Pink Panther theme come on please composer please [Laughter] it's me I'm gonna draw two cards and I'm gonna add one face down for the movie and it's gonna be the Pink Panther theme or did I thought so now Dom has the power to choose between those two cards and your one choice goes there and the discard comes to me oh the discards stay well away from the table so no one accidentally takes them into their hand my fingers are a bit uh a bit Twitchy after playing the scene or something uh I will say there's a there's more communist cards in this deck than there are patriots just so people know so don't panic Don't Panic everybody Don't Panic All right so that's pre-production done everyone has either done their job roll the dice or swap their job and now we go to the premiere which is everyone who is in the movie gets to contribute one card so Brooke you cannot everyone else must there's a card if you're a patriot I advise you to play a patriot card um now normally um a random card would go in but because we had our composer that doesn't happen so instead these are the ones we are dealt if I was in edsu who had their turn left this would be the time where I go in and I take a card from the top and I choose whether to keep it or discard it edit is very powerful um but it's based on The Cutting Room floor yeah exactly don't need you why would you need you so this is for the comments which I care about let's see how this comedy pans out oh oh very funny joke to three Patriot symbols it's a good stuff oh three one three one oh it's a Twist okay three all right okay this came from someone around here because there are no random cards in here super communist in here yep uh Patriot for three neutral so still four three or five four if you want to be that way all right so that is a tie which means yeah both of our Communists played and uh our rising star has chosen Communists this time it would appear uh card potentially well Dom uh picked two and put one in yes and they were identical cards were they they were were they they were were they they were yeah well the only identical cards you could have played though no I mean the the two I drew were identity right so whichever one I had no choice really right like this story it's a true story a lot of people in this movie perhaps too many people in this movie uh so that is a communist movie because uh in case of ties they go to the Communists the boom we've made it seems a communist comedy we made a comedy a community yeah very good trying to do something no they can't hey they are too poor why why why does Karl Marx not like Yorkshire Tea because property is fifth we could have a lot of Communists around this table you see you gotta look at a little Brook her hair is red but what else is also uh Adam has he got the teeth of a patriot oh it was a big almost uh steel-like teeth ever have a communist then you get diamond again looks just like Trotsky and also Molotov two famous Communists Rosie Nichols who uh well she's insane like a communist and then he got a oh little Laurie you're telling me a man who is completely bald believes that uh we we should live in a world where people have freedom of God's Not he would make every single one of you bald as said he could if anything you know I'm a patriot how so okay we had two Communists in there oh very very good points Brooke but you you said you you made it perfectly clearly we're gonna bring me along so I mean yeah I didn't bring you along oh well because that's just so Dynamic you know yes tit for tap tip for tat [Laughter] new movie all right so we are now making a film Noir intensely communist talk about a disillusionment of the uh mistake corruption at the time what an atmospheric film The Artist all right this film Noir starts off with two communist symbols which is bad so maybe let's remove the Communists from this movie and it's just different hmm I'm just thinking about swapping some jobs I want me to be the composer it will be all Backstreet Boys you you are a very good like if you if we think you're good which I think we do because there were three oh yeah we should give you the director's really good if people could have been dealt just to communist cards right so then that doesn't necessarily mean I think people might have picked you know perked up about that yeah to be honest I think no this is good for you because you can give people you can give it I can give that to Brooke that you're not proved be good right if I give it to Brooke she uses it doesn't she so I would just be proving that I am good by giving this to Brooke yes we are happy with Pink Panthers right but Dom is in the movie right now if it's not bro right Rosie what would you like to do if it's not Brooke don't fix it don't fix it the Tom Allen approaches oh oh I'm gonna make yeah I swapped on um Brooke and sorry all right oh give me the gold please it's a good plan what are you talking about Laurie's the actress so uh we have it we have a brand new director hey and hey you get to go right now I get to go right now uh fresh Adam director school um I'm gonna reroll because I want to be in the movie okay oh thank you Dominic re-roll your dice music was great I thought yeah it was really nice that's what all the reviews said check the comments yeah it starts off incredibly obvious we need to take some people out of this movie um can I please have some codes oh I see uh yes I'm I'm happy to do that um yeah yeah yeah we need to start testing people the only way we test people is by taking people we can't we can't all go on this movie because there's no test okay uh so who who should we get some um uh Rosie and Larry both of you reroll your dice all right I'm in the movie not in the movies Rosie's out the move uh is this an audition tape I can do I'm five foot eight I um I have nice long arms I uh I'm a good actress why do they say the arms before the actress thing that was this is why I don't get any acting work so one person's at the movie um I think I should use my power again yeah why don't you like that no why don't I like that um last time I drew two communist cards and I put one in because I had to and I my my choice was a neutral some absolute horseshit like right now I've got two communist cards I'll show you if you want you can't do that well I could I mean I physically can but you have to go in what are you gonna do restrain me I do whatever the [ __ ] I want maybe we should yeah or spare it with that power well I can't help it if if yeah we've been resolved the most of the cards in there Communists I can't help it if all music is communist can I can I all I can play is the Pink Panther theme but apparently it really encourages people to to overthrow capitalism it is my turn um which means I either choose to use this power later or I then do the other things I can do now I'm gonna use my power later I could try and take people out of the movie but actually think my power is more powerful and better for this movie if I use it later so now everyone who is in the movie which is everyone except Rosie our producer this is uh not ideal for me I will say I am looking at one oh that's going out of the movie thank you very much Communists thing all right and now this gets another Shuffle I think Adam is a very loud Patriot almost like I love my country all right so two uh two nil to all yay hey by the way that's mine um sure three two three oh hey hey ho ho yeah let's go the Patriot card I know the Communist card is the Brooks that's all I got so oh interesting rubbish paper I was I'm Johnny neutral I'm a patriot of course I'm a patriot I like Aunt Jemima American Pie the Declaration of Independence guns I love guns what's more American than that of course I'm a patriot one of the cars that was played was a congressional hearing which means all dice are re-rolled right now I'm out of the movies [Applause] oh McCarthy was like not her not these little communist with a crown what are we making we are making a western good old patriotic restaurant True Grit what's this music oh god I've noticed that the composer is still doing the same too instruments producer me you're up um want to be in the movie you want to be in the movie I'm not in the movie yeah [Laughter] [Laughter] um all right okay are you a patriot yes prove it well I put in two Patriot things and no one else also I apparently according to the table talk there were two communist cards in there and then one came out because I took one of them out okay okay so if you want to get yourself I believe that was the cover he used yeah if you want to get yourself an Adam into the into the movie I think that would make sense if you want to get me into the movie they wrote re-rolling if you guys want to get into the movie I don't mind getting into the movie but my thing is that I can make your cards better I could use my power to make your cards better when you're in the movie so if you made yourself into the movie with Adam yes that's good so no one wants my director we don't know we don't want we don't want five people in the movie no no no no we I think we can kind of lock in on the idea that the amount of communist cards there does point fingers towards Rosie a little bit maybe some fingers so um I played a patriot in the last one and then the first one the cards I swapped one one was Communist I will say I'm fine not being in the movie I'm just going to use my power because my power is very good so I basically I can I can do re-rolls on my turn I'm I'm if people want I think you're the rising star nope not I think you should put me in the movie so that I can prove that I'm a patriot do whatever you like okay whatever to be in the movie just don't worry about me I'm fine who else would you like who do I want to be in the movie you could have me reroll I don't mind all right let's see what happens if we take Lorry out of the movie well it's not guaranteed I might still get to be in there yeah no that's fine mum can you find them company again it's me I would like to draw two cards please that's the role this game's missing the agent to come in and turn people's Stars off [Laughter] a client's not working anymore yes um it's my go um uh Brooke would you like to change out two of your cards yes so you draw two and then you choose which two you're gonna discard and then give the discards to me please uh yes I would like to discard these tools thank you bro there you go see we could be in a movie together from the director uh I don't well I think if we want to maintain this experiment I should mess with anyone's uh thingies so I'm going to do my power make sense I'm being framed my power is [ __ ] up every single time because every time now you'll be pleased to know I draw two Patriot cards so I'm suggesting that here's a bad boy I can't prove it but yeah considering the time period that doesn't really matter I don't know why Adam so suspicious of me I think it's probably because he's a liar and he's trying to cast it on to me there's nothing suspicious about a composer composing music for a film what do you expect me to do there's nothing else to do right everyone who's in the movie which is everyone on that side put a card in there please don't [ __ ] it up you little guy let's have a meeting in my trailer wait what I'm not going there again naked museums can the film be filmed in my trailer why do you want to be in the movie when you could be in the producer Jesus as your editor I am now going to take this card oh I'm Gonna Keep It In the movie okay Western three Nails Western [Applause] and I played for reference I had bad cards I played the neutral and the Patriot was one of the ones I drew off the thing like I said one of you three's the rising star a rising stars I think considering the makeup of the of this team and this team uh for sure one of you played for the Patriots there but is actually the rising star I'm I'm 90 sure of it and I actually think it's you some of them why me you're giving me Rising Star Vibes that's what they said at driving school you're gonna struggle what are we making now we are making a musical oh yes foreign right this is incredibly patriotic incredibly patriotic music Oklahoma uh what would you number one doesn't go it's me again dangerous not in the movie I should be included in the films I want to be in the films nice long arms you need to roll a second what can you do I've been so good yes thanks you're welcome you are in the movie okay welcome back to the movie I think that's I do actually think you're on that level so I think that is a good thing thanks buddy nice I'm suspicious suspicious don't like this either rising star is copied his friend the Isaac start and his communist friend am I a communist I don't know who's told you that I'm a patriot through and through red white and blue but a little less of the emphasis on the red I'm I'm American you can tell by my accent under my manners up the change out your cards please and change out my tips okay one two very nice and then I will get rid of Aziz to Super play mercy uh and now unfortunately um Dom gets to do his uh his role again just agreed that you like the music I think you could be the rising star especially if I were I would probably be going Communists in this land but you'll see that I don't do that because I'm a good boy I'm getting the hang of this music now who's in the movie oh I'm oh I'm gonna do my part who's in a movie yes he's coming in my trailer so I am going to shuffle these there should be four people in the movie should be five one two three four five going to take this one oh you can stay in the movie absolutely give another Shuffle Shuffle worst house two nil oh shake up all job cards will be shuffled after this your screenplay was so bad the entire studio just get rid of everyone I can't I can't believe I've just read this [ __ ] screen lit is anyone even touch this screenplay is sack these guys have read my script and they've decided that I'm not working on the film one how dare they second of all how dare they but the good thing for me is actually this gives me a really good chance to switch out all of my cards it gives me a really good chance to try to build a better position of trust within the overall group and hopefully I can prove my innocence because at some point here I know that there's a communist amongst this group I know it and they are going to have to show themselves at which point I'm going to seem really [ __ ] good it's now to all three two three two four two there we go it's a patriot picture one more of these and the Patriots will win he was looking sad you're all looking a bit sad because you're you're trying really hard not to lose my friends my question is yep [Music] all right the important thing is these get discarded one more Patriot win the Patriots are doing by the way my patreon everyone hand in your job so much Mr Allen we love the music but have you ever tried operating these lights [Laughter] I'm gonna hand out your job tokens and take great relish doing it let's start with you little dog so you can't get rid of me I'm the greatest composer in Hollywood I am the uh what's his name the guy who does the tunes for um Star Wars unlike that guy John thingy or the guy who does the Pirates of the Caribbean music and it's the same music for every film I'm that guy Lori next up he wanted to be the screenwriter yes good for you you're the producer Rosie hello you used to be the producer I did but now now you're the director [Applause] oh I had a taste of power so I've decided to keep it um I've just been there long enough to become part of the furniture yeah little ingenue you're an actresses too many women in it there's way too many women in that one um now and now you oh yeah you tried your time away but no get back in front of the camera it comes back um or the cinematographer which means we have our editor our screenwriter and the gaffer right we've made loads of films with that script and lights white change now yeah like worth pointing out before this round starts uh one more patriotic picture and the Patriots win the entire game immediately uh Communists got to work hard and Rising style will probably be working for the Communists here Kaboom it's a crime has everyone drawn up to three no do it do it do it it's a cream right uh starting with not the screenwriter starting with the producer Laurie Blake are you gonna get yourself in the movie it's gonna be the movie you could try and be in the way to be in the movie you haven't been in the movie you haven't been in the movie in age now since the first ever movie we ever made we're doing very well so the communist movement yeah it's weird ever since he left the movies they've started becoming more patriotic yeah that's fine I'll stay out of the movie that's right you could be in the movie I don't need to be in the movie it was doing really well for my team I'm thank God somebody knocking at a trailer though I'm already in my trailer I know it's me yeah I'm gonna say this he really wants to be a screenwriter Danny yeah [Music] director of cream hello Rosie Nichols director of cream um okay cream on scene so I'm going to give a token to any player you can or you can put yourself in the movie if you'd prefer I actually wouldn't mind being taken out of the movie if anyone wants to rerun my dice roll themselves I would prefer to I would prefer to do my power but I don't want to be in the movie put me in catch I'm okay yeah I can I can try and put you in I might not get to be the director for much longer so I'm going to give a token to someone you've got one I'll give it a little she's probably the probably the best no why I mean yeah dumpsters I will say the last two movies is pretty exonerated music for all of these films I'm not going to catching because my hands are so tired from the piano she's played a really dangerous game yes um someone put me in the movie I am the director cream red cream I don't get to use my power this turn but that's fine because we can afford it so I'm essentially gonna skip it down I'm happy oh I don't want to be in the movie someone take me out the movie [ __ ] it I'm being selfish Take Me Out the movie I'm taking this I want it okay don't put me in the movie I've only got communist cards it is your turn actress uh that's fine by myself an actress um okay I will um I'll take you out of the movie I appreciate that wait why didn't you you don't want to swap his cards oh I can swap your cards prefer [ __ ] yeah uh that's that's more likely to actually be a thing yeah to keep his cards no no no I will swap my cards that's absolutely if I search you poison I know what's going on here so yeah swap your cards fella I think Sullivan is the rising star you know hmm why because you haven't bought the new ground because I'm happy with my cards you've been happy the whole time with your cards actually yes pretty much yes it will take anything that comes their way looking to rise to Great Heights in Hollywood [Laughter] how telling what because Patriot monarchy it does not work in a democracy president a bunch of words that was the first draft and then Thomas Jefferson was like I think I can I think I can do better right thing it doesn't imagine a sandwich like a sandwich no no uh done it's your turn to be in the movie you want to be in the movies please but neither of them have been in the movie since the first movie so it might be nice to give them a go I tried this in to have another action or to put another card in to put two cards in put two cards in oh well yeah okay in that case I don't mind not not writing the music for this film I don't want to be in the movie you don't want to be in the movie I don't want to be scapegoated I also been find to be taken out in the movie still you still find it yes if you need if you need to re-roll two dice put Rosie and take me out how are you two feeling about being in this movie uh you can take me out if you want and that's absolutely fine I do think you might be a rising star I think is so in case you would be working Communists let's roll Rosie roll rosie come on it's between you two isn't it tick is both that you can't okay one of us out um I'm not going to trade this in okay well but you're happy for me to roll you yeah yeah roll away then here we go actress okay um what is my best use here I know I've already been good luck everyone it's one nil [Laughter] [Laughter] four two four five two five two five three both Communists and the rising star that looks like Communists to me no you put we had a random card put in we did have a random card but there's not there's four communist cards in there and you put in two my boy I had to put one in because [Laughter] if I was a Communists it doesn't make sense if only there was something that made sense about this it just doesn't make sense what I did hey I wasn't in that yeah yeah I think I think that means we've got goodness over here so we might have a little triangle here let's push it towards the uh let's try and get it over the end goal everyone draw back up to three and reroll all day quite possible I think it's perfectly possible that you were not the rising star and we have our rising star who turbo charged to make sure that the last film was Communist and has actually been playing good the last few rounds yep who I would I will say that I definitely if I was Communist I would have taken that card that's that is a much better car to take it's a great game control so much more of the game so you have done your power screen right here which means we move on to our producer who is out of the game um so we go to our director we've got any money to make this film I'm so happy being at this meeting I want to swap my cards I can make you swappy kids okay but only on someone else's toy yeah I can make you swap you guys I would greatly appreciate my cards being switched I wouldn't mind uh some cats with some gold some gold eh and gold tits for gold it's for gold it's for gold are you always trading in tits
