Finspan solo play with Sharks & Reefs Expansion
Transcript
Hello everyone and welcome to the mill today. Today I have a very special solo play for you that is going to be featuring the new Finsspan expansion sharks and reefs. So I'm going to get to show off some of the new sharks and the new reef fish and how they interact with a new kind of resource, but more like that you're building up a coral reef. And so they're I'm going to show off the kind of three different types of coral tokens. Ah, they are super small. So that's what I'm struggling with here. See? So there's one. It's a little purple little brain looking one. So yeah, I'm going to give you two rounds of solo play that I've actually already filmed. So at the end, I'll kind of tell you which one uh who won, me or the Noma. And you'll see one how that interacts with the new with solo play.
Same solo play, but with a few new cards. So, you'll get to see that and you'll get to see the fish and coral and sharks in action. So, if you give me a second, I'm going to change the camera down to the table. All right. Well, here we are on our finan board and with some new pieces. So, let me give you a tour of some of the new parts. So, this is going to come with a new middle piece that you're going to put on. The only difference between the two sides is here you have the shapes of the coral and here you have the circles. They work identical. I did confirm this with Jamie. It's not two different modes or anything. Just a matter of if you just want it to look aesthetically with circles or if you want the help of the reminder of which coral goes in which zone because they do have to match. So the let's see these are the little green ones here. These are the little purple brain looking ones. And these are the blue ones over here. And they have to go in those sections. So I'm going to play it that side because I think it just visually it helps me remember which what goes where.
All right. Now what you're going to see is then put this up properly is so when you are activating a row and you get down here, here I can get rid of an egg to be able to put a coral on here. Here I could get rid of a young to put a coral here. And here I can get rid of a card to put a coral down here. Everything else works exactly the same when you activate a row. How you only can get the bonus for that section if you have a fish in that section. So that stays the same. This is the only kind of new piece with the board in case you want to see them up close. Here are the purple corals. the blue corals and the green ones. I do have the upgraded eggs and young and schools from that Stonemire makes. All of my little containers are just general 3D printed stuff that my husband does. All right.
So, besides that, it does also come with some new starter cards. As a reminder, can tell the starter cards have a different color back. So, it comes, I believe, with five new ones. So, I just took two of those. It does say to shuffle all the cards from the expansion into the deck because my focus of this play is to show off the new fishes and the new mechanics. I am just playing with the expansion cards. That's not what the instructions say to do, but this way you get a very focused piece on just the expansion. So, these are my two starting fish. So, you can already notice on these. So, these are if activated what they do. And then also, if for instance, this guy's over in this green area. If you have three of those green coral in that dive site, you get a bonus action. And this one's very similar that if you have three of the brain ones there in that dive site, you actually get to add one of the corals over there. So, this might be good to focus on. Maybe I get these purples in first, so then they'll help me build up the green. So, those are my two starter fish.
Okay, I'm also just It does come with a new achievement board. I don't think there was really too much different with it, but I am using this board technically came in with my expansion. Oh, you know what it is? It puts here the scoring over here and it has the coral scoring. There's your difference. So, that's what's there now. Um, and then my three starting fish. All right. So, this black tip shark does have some extra requirements. So, it needs to be in this area. And there also need to be two corals over there. So, he is a coral dweller. All right. So, or reef dwell dweller. I I think that that might be what. But he he needs coral essentially to be played cuz he is a shark. Um, and he has a win played ability that gives you a coral.
And then this is, I believe, a new symbol. So, we'll look at we got some new iconographies. So, we have some new ones here. Okay. So, let's help you out. And that one in particular is you can discard a school token from your ocean. Then place one young in each of the four different slots. If you do not have a school token to discard, place one young instead so you don't get completely jipped. But this is a great one for later if you have a school to get rid of and it'll help you disperse the young, which could be handy. All right, so that's one of my guys. All right, this guy is a dogfish.
Pretty pretty standard. He does have this little icon here. Let's see what that icon means. A fish in your ocean consumes a shorter fish from your hand. Tuck it underneath. Okay, so that's what that icon means. Oh, he Oh, this guy's pretty. So, he requires two of the green ones to be in there. And when he's activated, he adds a blue. All right. So, as you can see, a lot of these cuz they're all the new cards, they're messing around with your coral a lot. So, in this game, I might be getting more coral than you normally would. just because I am purposely playing with the fish who, you know, are focused on coral. All right, so that is those. All right, just to kind of show you, I said I'm using the normal board cuz I'm mostly focusing on fish, but the expansion did also come with some new gold tokens that you can use. So, there are three of them here, and they're doublesided.
So, it's just kind of an FYI that these are there. They do exist. I'm just not playing with them. And if you want, here is a closeup of the new box. So, Finsspan, Sharks, and Reefs. So, some pretty some pretty guys there. Kind of give you a look at it. All right. But yeah, other than that, it is going to really play the same. So, I'll just give you a couple rounds to run you through and see some of these fish in action. I have the Automa deck here. I did need to switch out three of the cards so that because there's coral. So, three of these cards are different. And the rule book actually says you can just get rid of the other cards. And so, then if you don't play with the expansion, you just ignore the coral part on the Automa card. All right. So, it says always says to discard one of these first. Okay, I'm going put them there. I get first dibs on stuff.
And I want to get some of these guys in pretty much right away cuz I need to I need to get things going here. All right, so I really want to start getting coral in. Okay, I'm tempted to start with this guy. Um, because I can then run most of this engine minus up top. Um, yeah, that could work. Or I could try to get a guy over here. I don't have too many options there. So, we're going to start with this one. He has to go here or here. And I already got a guy here to help me activate stuff. So, I'm going to put him here. This will help me generate a lot of eggs.
So, this is going to cost me one of my eggs and a card. And let's see. I would love to get this guy in, except it's probably going to take me a little bit to build up. So, yeah, I'm going to, I think, temporarily put him in my discard and hope to get him back. All right. And then let's put my little diver dude up here cuz I played a fish. I did that. I did that. And this is an if activated. So, we're going to be working on that. Okay. Automa. All right. So, they are going to put one guy towards our goal. Our round goal right now is eggs and or young.
All right. If they have three young, which they do not, they would make a school. And then two is eggs. And it has been a little bit since I've done this. So I'm just going to pull my rule book out. All right. So we're not converting. Convert eggs to young. Flip all egg tokens. Oh, so that's simple. So up to four. So, these two eggs are going to become too young. Thinking I might need to move this closer because I'm just reaching all over the place. All right. And then they get two more eggs. All right. You know what? I am going to do that. We're going to move. We're just going to rearrange a bit because that's getting annoying reaching over everything all the time.
There we go. All good. Now I don't have to reach as much. All right. And so that's the Automa's turn. We'll put that there. Okay. Now for me. So I'm thinking about running this engine. I really need more cards as well. Though I would only get one card here. So that's not really worth it till I get more cards over there. And yeah. And this guy has to go in green. So he doesn't do me too much good. And this guy needs some coral. All right. So, we're just going to I think I'm just going to run this egg engine. I don't get an egg here. Here. I can get rid of this young so I can start getting some coral here.
Coral is going to be worth points. Notice there are reef completion points that are printed on the board. The automo also get points for it. And I do have a fish here. So, that's going to get me an egg. All right, I have fish here. So, I'll get me another egg. And this guy is going to get me another egg. All right, so I have all my eggs. I don't have three in that dive site yet. So, I'm come down here. O, I don't think I get an egg here because wasting my bonus. Didn't even think about that because I don't have enough fish. All right. Well, that is my turn. Back to the auto atma.
All right, they are going to turn these eggs into couple young and then just get two more eggs. Nice and simple. Okay, so I need to do stuffing things. I'm tempted to get this guy in so I can hatch some of these eggs and then I can start getting coral in here. So, this guy needs to go here, right? Let's see. Um, yeah, neither of these I'm going to be getting soon. So, I'm just going to get rid of this guy. All right. So, I played him there and that's all he costs.
And now to I should have done that first and then got eggs, but oh well. Back to the auto atma. All right, he's getting another guy over here. And okay, so this is one of the new cards that involves the coral. So I'm going to pull out this new piece and we're going to run through this. All right. So, a Noma turn. This is the add coral option. So, in this action, Noma will gather coral to compete with your growing collection. All right. So, we have the one and it has that little conversion thing. Convert one egg to one or two coral. If NMA has at least one egg, return one egg from her play area to the general supply. Then take one coral. We are doing difficulty two. So, we are not going to do this. I don't think it matters for which one. I think it's just coral in general um from the general supply and place them in her play area. If she doesn't have an egg, nothing happens. So, she did have an egg and she turned that into a coral. All right. And now we have the next one. This is where the NMA is going to get some cards. So, go back to this one. As I said, it's been a little bit, so I just want to make sure I do these right. So, draw a fish card and place it face up in Noma's play area.
All right. The fly tail cat shark. Cool, cool, cool, cool. Noma ignores all details on the fish card except if it has an all player ability. It does not. So, we are not going to worry about it cuz otherwise I would also get stuff. But not an all player benefits. We don't have to worry about it. All right, my turn. I have one card and it's not a very useful one at that right now cuz I can't play it. So, my options are sadly to go and get I believe a single card over there and then one from this pile or I can come over here and start hatching eggs, which I think I'm going to do first. All right, so we're going to come up here. I do get to hatch. You know what? I'm gonna hatch eggs over here.
All right. So, we're gonna hatch you because this guy's in here. Now, you know what? I am actually going to do this cuz I'm not going to play this card. I have a feeling. So, I'm actually going to pay that card cuz I need to start building up this coral cuz I have a lot of fish that want this coral engine. So, I need to get that done. All right. I have right I have this guy. So I'm going to hatch that one. Don't have three green yet, but I'll get there. All right. I don't get this move cuz I don't have a fish. But then I do get this bonus and I can move one. Oh, I messed that up a little bit, I think. All right. Uh, so yeah, I'm just going to move him up here. So then the idea would be if I get an egg here, I could hatch it and they would, you know, become a school and have a, you know, nice little party at school. Cool.
Oh my gosh, this feels like not the best of turns. Okay. Oh my gosh, they have so much over here. And they're already starting playing on the calm side here. They're at difficulty too. So you're looking at that icon. They already start with a base of three. So they have six right now. And I have one, two, three, four. So, I might just have to do more. Gosh, if I do more eggs, let's see. How many eggs do I get? I should just do their turn first. All right, they do have one egg, so they're going to turn that into a coral. All right, they're going to get another card. It's an endgame ability. Nothing for me. All right, so back to me. All right, now I need to count. How many eggs can I hold? I only can hold three. If I go through this, I would get one, two, I would only get three eggs. So, I could hold all of them. And if I run this, I can get I have more young, so I can get another coral here. So, I'm getting closer to that. I think that's the move. All right. So, we're going to go here. I get nothing. Nothing. Nothing. I'm sadly going to get rid of one of those, but I'm getting closer to building up this this reef. I do get that egg. I'm going to put you right there.
And then I also get that egg. And I get that egg. And I am so close to being able to do this bonus now, too. All right, let's see. All right, Noma. Oh, sweet. They get to take one of those off. Beautiful. They are going to turn three of these young into a school.
They actually don't have any eggs to turn into fish cuz they've been turning them into coral, though. So, that's kind of an interesting tidbit there about how things change. All right. And they get the two eggs. All right. So, they are currently at five on that and I'm at 1 2 3 4 five six. So, I am beating them there. I don't want to get more eggs on my last turn. And yeah, I think I'm just going to have to go and get the one fish from here and get one from my discard because yeah, I don't want to I don't think cuz I don't have a card to get that coral even. So yeah, we're going to go here. This is not going to be the most exciting of get cards turn cuz I get nothing here.
I could though spend one of my eggs. I think I'm going to I don't know if that's smart, but I really want to get these reefs up. All right, that's the blue one. I said I find these little shadow things a little bit more helpful to remember what goes there. I mean, they're also colorcoded by the reefs here, but I find that helpful. All right, I need a card. Okay, come on. Something useful. Well, I'm getting close to being able to get him in. Annie has to go up in the I already have something in that sun area, but it's not bad. I can we can get this guy going soon. All right. And then I get to take one from my discard pile. I will say this is one of my favorite parts about Finsspan is this discard pile. I'm also getting close to this guy and so I mean these guys would kind of fill out my area over there and they'll help me get my blue one going. So, yeah, I think I'm going to get him back.
All right, so that is my final turn. Noma. All right, they're taking another one of these off. That's right. We're not competing. I've been playing a lot of solo wingspan lately and it's like, oh, wait. We're not actually really competing in this one. It's just how many points we get. All right, they don't have three young to turn to a school. They will turn both of these eggs into young and then get two eggs back. All right. And that is their turn. All right. So now I need my sheet. Give me one sec to go. I thought I had my score sheet right here. Give me a sec.
Okay. So, there is a new score pad that comes with this expansion because they add the coral bonuses down here. So, you will get one point each for coral and then if you fill up these whole rolls, you get those bonuses. All right. So, mema week one achievement. I have 1 2 3 4 5 and the Toma has three + 1 has four. Woohoo. After week one, I am beating them by a point. All right. So, that's going to go away. This is going to move to week two. All right. And that is that. All right. And we do have some new NMA reminders over here. This kind of shows you. So, I won't finish this full thing, but for endgame story scoring, I'm going to do level two. So, the cards are going to be three points each. The schools will be five.
All right. Um, and then down here, leftover young eggs and coral will just be a point. But if you look at the some of these higher levels, they get more points. But yeah, so that there is like a nice little cheat seat there for Noma for endgame scoring. All right, so let's look at some more fish here. I would really like to get these guys in. So technically what I could do is I could go over here. We're now scoring for rosafish. So it' be great if I can get some of these other ones in. But both my guys are green. I really need to get more in that blue area. I should probably take my little diapers back here. All right. So, what I'm thinking I'm thinking of coming over here cuz I could get rid of one of those for right now.
Um, and then I can get that built up. Or I can go down. Oh, no. Cuz I'm going to run out of space for eggs. So, yeah, we're going to do this. So, I do get to hatch cuz he's there. So, we're going to do that. Now, this guy still takes two cards. So, I'm going to get rid of him for right now because I really want to get this in. So, now I can actually play that fish. But, I need more cards. Of course, this guy's going to let me hatch somebody.
All right. So, that was a hatch. That was a hatch. This is another hatch. Wow. Don't have that. Don't have that. I do get the movement here. H. Pardon me. No, I'll be fine. All right. So, I'm just going to move this guy up so that I get a school. All right. So, now I have space for more eggs. All right. Oops. Forgot to put that one card. This was the card that was not in the Toma deck. So, we reshuffle and then we trash one again.
Cool. I still have the one egg. I might build that up then because I can't play that guy until I get another card even. All right, cut one out and they are going to get one more here. Oh, should go to week two here. Rows of fish. They start with zero. All right, they do have an egg to turn into a coral. They are going to get one from the deck. This is not one that would give me anything either. All right. And that's their turn. Back to me. I definitely need cards.
And I definitely need do a bunch of things. All right, we're going to have to get cards cuz I can't even play this guy till I have cards. So, nothing here. I'm going to spend this one egg. So, I can get another blue coral here. Nothing. All right. Come on. Give me something I can work with. So, this guy needs to eat somebody, but he can go anywhere. Wow. This like no way that's going to happen, so whatever. But he would give me a spot. All right. So that symbol means choose a fish from your hand with the characteristic shown, if any, and play it for free. So this guy would let me play another fish for free, but there would have to be no coral in that fish's dive site, which I already have a bunch of coral, so there's no way that's happening. But he's an easier one to get in as I could just put him literally on top of one of these guys.
Um, but yeah, doesn't really help with too much else. Okay. And then I'm going to come down here. I'm just going to take that other fish back. See, I don't even know if that blackmouth angler really helps me. He has to go on top of a smaller fish. All right. Excuse me. Okay. Noma. Going to get another thing over here. Their egg's going to turn into a coral and then they're going to get a card. Nothing for me on said card. There are some of these that have this symbol now and that means they have to be in this bottom spot. Just kind of to point that out that that's a new thing.
Also, if three core on this dive site, it means you get to eat a fish. And so, yeah, that would just be mean you could put a smaller fish under underneath him. So, that would be the same thing. So, if you look here, he's 63 cm. You would just have to put a smaller fish underneath and he could eat them. Okay. And that is their turn. Mine. Okay. Well, this is not going well for getting much out here. Um, these are both the same. I'm going to put this guy as he costs less right now. We're going to go here. And I'm not really going to use this. This guy, yeah, he just doesn't work for what I need to get done. So, he's going into my thing, though. I'd love to. I need to get stuff here.
All right. But I have this guy in and I'm up there. All right. So, I was able to play him. He had to go in the sunny area. And because I have two green coral, he's now allowed in. All right. Sweet. They're getting rid of one of those. Fortunately, they're doing three young becoming a school. Um, there are no eggs to hatch though, but they will get two more. All right, back to me. Thinking it might be egg time. And so that way I can get that going and that I'll start helping that out. We're going to go here. I don't get that one. Going to pay my last young.
So now I'm going to be able to get those bonuses here. All right. Have a fish there. So again, egg. All right. Get me another egg there. Get me another egg on you. Also, since I have three of these, I get a green one, which is awesome. And now my bonus egg. Let's put with you. Perfect. So, again, stuff and things. I just have a lot that costs cards to play and I don't have a good card engine right now.
I have a great I have a decent egg engine and a great hatching engine, but I need to work on that. All right. Sweet. Get rid of one of those. They can't make a school. They will turn. I'm just going to leave these two eggs. They're about to get them. But these two eggs technically hatch to make two young.
All right, two more turns. All right, I feel like I'm going to want to definitely do this. Sadly, I need more cards. Just really need a way of getting a card over there. What do I have in my discard pile? I mean, if I could build up my cards, I could get that guy in anywhere. This guy I technically could get in over here now. Cost a card in a young. All right, this might be the guy I have to get back. All right, so for right now, I'm going to go hatching. All right, so we're going to hatch hatch this guy.
All right. This guy's going to give me another blue one. I mean, I could pay that one, but I feel like I'm going to need that to pay for if I want to get this shark. So, I'm going to skip that this time. Hatch. I'm going to hatch this guy. You're going to let me hatch another one.
Sure. Like a little diver drowning in the fish. Now I do have these. So I do get to do an extra move. So you're going to move up here. Um, I don't have get that one and I don't get the bonus. All right, Ntomo almost here. All right, they don't have a guy to to lose. I'm not going to get any of these rows. I just realized that. Oh well, that's just how it's going to work. Haven't gotten the cards for it. One of these eggs is going to turn into a reef. Uh, once again, they have a velvet belly. Another shark here. Notice how the sharks kind of like that's the idea is the thematically the sharks are like scaring the scattering the schools.
All right. If you hear my son I apparently have we're on spring break and my son apparently is I think having his own little dance party with his own singing up there. So if you heard that, enjoy little, you know, nine-year-old singing. But yeah, these are they they're kind of calling a little bit more with the tags. And yeah, these guys are scattering schools, but nothing for me. So that goes there. Okay, so I could go get another fish, but I really want to be able to get this other guy in here, and I wouldn't get the bonus. So I'd be going over there literally for one card. So instead, I think I might just get more eggs.
You want to come say hi to people?
Hi. Hi, the mill.
All right, Luka, come say hi. All right, so I think
No, I snuggle you.
You're gonna snuggle me. All right, I think I'm going to get some more eggs. What do you think? You like Finsspan, don't you?
Yeah. All right.
So rubbery.
Eggs are rubbery. All right. So, yep. I think that's what we're doing. We're going to get eggs.
Um, while I don't get that one.
Oh, you haven't played the expansion yet, have you? Don't get too close to the mic.
Is that the video you're doing?
Yep. All right. So, you know what? I think I'm actually going to spend this guy to get another reef. And then again, egg. Can you put an egg on a fish? Put one on this guy for sure.
What's the expansion?
It has the sharks and the reefs. Okay, back up from the mic, sweetie.
So, I got the egg. And then I get another egg. Put that up there. I'll put it here. And another egg. Sure.
How much eggs do you get?
A lot. And since I have the purple coral once again, I get the green. So, I'm working well on getting at least these bonuses hopefully, but I'm not doing so well with uh some of the with getting some bonus points. All right, there's my last turn. And now this guy going to get one. Going to get in our school. This is always painful with the mitoma. This one egg is going to turn into a young and they're going to get two eggs and that is their turn. So scoring for this round, I have no rows of fish which is very sad. Noma has one, which gets them two points. So that's where we're at. They're being a six to five right now.
They are, let's see, week three. Actually, they start with a base of zero schools. You don't actually look at how many schools they have. Thank goodness. Otherwise, I'd be in big trouble. So, right now, I actually already have one of those, which will be nice. Okay, but yeah, that's where we are at. I will finish the game. I will kind of let you know how it goes. I hope you enjoyed getting to see some of these cards in action, getting to see how the coral reefs interact and how they work within the game. As you can see, it kind of has me lower on some resources cuz I'm spending them for the reefs, but those are going to pay out cuz right now I'm going to get one, two, three, seven. I'm going to get 11 points for those alone.
And I'm getting really close to getting these reef completion bonuses. But as I said, I'm focusing on these. But just to give you a few more, look at some cards. Mimic goatfish. So this guy would give you more coral at the end. I would love this guy. I need him over there right now. Um, strip deal catfish. So you can see this will be really nice to mix in with the other deck. So this is that deck right now. Here is my base game. That's part of my base game deck. Is this still base game over here? Yeah. And then this is just approximating. And there's the rest of the base game deck. So, I mean, there's a decent chunk you're adding. So, once you add them in, it will definitely be, I think, a better mixture. Ooh, the bonnet head shark. There's a new s tag there.
Yeah. Kind of give you an idea. A bunch of fish that are typically in the reefs. Oh, this one. Fire dart fish. We used to have a couple of these and we named them it was oh Lenny and we named them after the guys in um Boston Legal. So I'm like drawing a blank on their names but I remember we used to have these guys and they were super fun. Um ghostly sea devil. This kind of Wow. And these are some quite exotic fish and sharks here. Oo, hammerhead. So, yeah, just to give you an idea, as I said, you can see on all these, some a lot of them have the requirements and a lot of them give you stuff over here that has to do with the reefs. Oh my gosh, I love this one.
The zebra seahorse. So beautiful. But yeah, that is the some solo play and some highlighting of the sharks and reef expansion. All right, I hope that was helpful and you enjoyed it and we'll see you next time on the mail. Bye.
