Dog Park: New Tricks🐩 🪀- How to Play Board Game
hello everyone it's Stella and Taryn here from Maple University today we'll be teaching you how to play dog park New Tricks the expansion to dog park game designed by Lottie and Jack Hazel and published by birdwood games let's get to the game originally released in 2022 dog park saw players taking on the roles of dog walkers trying to earn the most reputation through walking dogs through the park now comes the new tricks expansion introducing new mechanisms to further increase the complexity and entry of your dog walking you'll be able to teach these old dogs some new tricks new Tactical ways to gain an advantage through the rounds there are new mixed breed dogs to walk higher in cost but higher in reward and new and powerful super locations in the park give you further tactical ways to achieve your goals these all form a single non-modular expansion with all three new elements designed to be combined at once New Tricks also comes with components for a fifth player expansion and you can play either the base game or the game with the new mechanisms at 5 players using these components to set up you'll need to integrate all of the components that come from the nutrix expansion with this icon in with the base game for the dog cards you'll need a well-balanced deck Shuffle the new tricks dog cards and then deal out 25 of these cards into a deck return the rest to the new tricks box now take about 50 cards from the base stock deck and you can do that just by leveling off the decks put the rest of the based on cards back in the base box and then Shuffle the 75 cards you've drawn into a single deck this ensures that roughly a third of the cards will be from the multi-breed deck Shuffle the new tricks objective cards indicated by the NT into their respective decks before dealing them out and do likewise with the new tricks forecast cards separate the trick Cards into two piles the blue kennel tricks and the red lead tricks Shuffle each of them separately and draw four cards from the lead deck and three cards from the kennel deck return the rest to the Box then Shuffle those seven Trick cards together and lay them out randomly on these seven spaces on the new trick board which is placed at the top of the main board each of these represents the specific trick which that breed of dog will be able to be taught through the game for example in this setup gundogs will be able to be taught loyalty in addition to a score marker and Walker players now also take the matching colored trainer which is what they'll be using to train the dogs in these tricks you won't use the base game's location bonus deck at all instead replace it with the super location bonus deck from the nutrix expansion then when you set up the location bonuses for the round place the extra bonus icons as usual and then place the super bonus tiles based on the letters here I would place the B tile in this space and the H tile in this space these tiles are double-sided and as in the base game you've got re-rooted and plentiful Park options you're now ready to play the game is still played in four rounds and each round is still played in four phases first is the recruitment phase where players will bid reputation points to gain two dogs from the field second is selection where players spend resources to move up to three dogs to their leads for walking third is walking where players will advance tactically through the park in order to gain the rewards and fourth is home time where players gain or lose points for the dogs they have and haven't walked and reset for the next round we'll now go through what new tricks brings to each of these phases in detail first the recruit phase and there is no change to the way you play the recruit phase you'll still choose a dog to bid on and bid a number of reputation points on your dial the way you did in the base game what's new is now there may be some multi-breed dogs to choose from and since these come with some particular bonuses these may be well sought after generally speaking each of these dogs counts as both of its breeds for all purposes so for the end of game breed expert majorities it would count as one dog in each of its categories it could count towards multiple forecast cards over the course of the game it could count towards more than one other dog's end game scoring objective and as we'll see soon you'll be able to train that dog in multiple tricks if at any point the draw deck runs out then you'll need to create a new smaller deck once again using a two to one ratio of multi-breed cards and base cards just take five multi-breed cards and 10 base cards and shuffle them together into a new smaller deck you won't be expected to need any more than this if you're playing the two-player game the auto Walker doesn't automatically consider a multi-breed dog better than the others it still bids only on the single highest breed type that it can see and breaks tires from left to right there is a new Step introduced to the selection phase in addition to choosing which dogs go onto your lead for the round you now choose which one of your dogs you're going to train you move your trainer marker onto that dog as well as a trained token you can choose a dog on your lead or in your kennel once a dog has either of these pieces on it it becomes eligible to do the trick effect which corresponds to all of its breed types all of the trick cards tell you when they can be resolved and this will be either at the end of selection or during walking they'll also tell you whether the dog has to be on lead or in your kennel to be allowed to take the effect you'll note as well that each trick has two potential costs shown at the bottom of the board a lower cost if this is the dog which has your trainer marker on it in this round and a higher cost if it no longer has the trainer but still has its trained token if you ever do a swap on one of these dogs and it has the tokens then you would return the trained token to the supplier or the trainer token to your lead before doing the swap third is the walking phase the general rules of this phase do not change you'll still Advance through the park in turn order gaining bonuses for the places that you land on there are two main changes firstly you'll now be able to activate some of your tricks during the walking phase secondly there are super locations and these are more powerful locations that you can visit to resolve the effects as indicated by this icon at the bottom super locations can be occupied by multiple players and you do not have to pay the reputation penalty to resolve that effect this means all players can be planning ahead to utilize these to the best of their abilities finally as part of the home phase you'll also remove your trainer from the dog that it was on in this round the trained token will remain meaning that this dog will still be able to resolve this trick but at the higher cost for the rest of the game when the game is over you'll count up the final score in the usual way there are no extra ways of scoring points in the nutrix expansion just remember to count your multi-breed dogs to each of their breed expert bonuses and as both breeds towards any other final scoring objectives with the new tricks expansion box you can play dog park at five players whether you play with new tricks or not the fifth player will play with the white components and players start at Five Points as normal add the fifth player field overlay so that there's always five cards to bid on instead of four it's recommended that you use the plentiful Park cards but once again this is not mandatory you'll need to create more space in the park for five players and you'll do this by placing these two long overlays on the first two spaces and this new leaving bonus overlay at the leaving bonuses for the purposes of this reputation penalty these are considered four separate spaces so this player could go here and this could go here and they would each get the rewards without having to pay any reputation but for the purposes of movement these are considered part of the same track for example Green's Next Movement could be one step to here this will help to spread out the five walkers towards the start of the Walk phase there are now five reward spaces available on the leaving bonus track there are also new copies of three of the base game objective cards which simply make reference to the five player game and you can do a straight swap out with those from the base finally the solo rules remain largely unchanged other than a new set of solo ratings which can be found in the back of the rulebook and that's how to play dog park New Tricks we
