Formula D in about 3 minutes
this video is brought to you by the three-minute board game patrons keep us Independent by supporting us on patreon [Music] Kia ora koutou and welcome to formula D in about 3 minutes it has no solo mode, it's a game for 2 to 10 players, playing time is medium to long and it can be a moderately complex game welcome to Monaco in this year's Formula 1 race the cars have finished the formation lap and the grid is set just five lights and we are ready to go this game is a race and the winner is the first car to complete a set number of laps, usually one or two dice: the D in formula d stands for dice roll and move: you roll your die and move your car player elimination: you can crash out in corners or by wearing out your car play a turn formula D has several modes of play, we're going to focus on the beginning rules using Formula 1 style cars and tracks each player picks a car and a driver and you can have up to 10 players or five players controlling two cars in teams grab the matching card for your player board and then take a dashboard, put the gear stick in the 1 to 2 spot and a wear tracking marker at the 18 spot each gear position represents a different die and when you are in that gear that is a die you will roll they are color coded to make finding them easy one quirk is that each die is flattened, for example the blue D30 only rolls 21 to 30 to start of race each player rolls the normal 1 D20 with the highest roll starting on Pole Position down to the lowest roll at the back of the Grid on your first turn roll the black die, on a one you'll miss your turn on a 20 move ahead fuor spaces and on any other roll do nothing special when you start your turn you may choose to go up a gear, we do and roll the orange die we get a four and that moves us into the Sainte Devote Corner the one on Sainte Devote indicates that we must stop in this corner once or we will take wear on the car the green seven indicates the longest path around the corner and the red three the shortest on our next turn we change up a gear to the orange eight we roll a seven and clear the corner taking no damage because we stopped there last turn a few turns later we arrive at casino and are going really fast But we're confident and we roll the purple 20-sided Dice and get a 20 if you Roll max value on the purple or blue Die you take one wear on your console 16 moves takes us to this position, which means we will be four spaces past stopping in that corner we take one wear for each space we overshot we are lucky this is a One-Stop Corner because if you don't stop in a two or three stop Corner, that's an immediate crash on our next turn we decide we need to rapidly slow down, so downshift two gears instead of one, this does one more wear on lap two other cars have gotten ahead of around the hair pin heading into the tunnel we roll a four and you cannot move yourself over another car, so we spend three movement points to move here and then take one wear from the unspent movement as we are in proximity to other cars at the end of our turn, we roll the black D20 we would take one more wear on a 1 through four keep racing until everyone crashes or someone crosses the Finish Line why would you like this game?
formula D has its Origins all the way back in 1991 and I first played an older version of this game at least 20 years ago and yes it might feel dated when you look at it, but you know what roll and move can be fun and I know that concept is border line offensive to Modern gaming sensibilities but there's something entirely Charming about the risk management and drama in Formula D's dice as gears system and what do the advanced rules do?
a few things firstly car wear becomes about specific Parts with different actions causing different types of damage and they also introduce Fast and Furious style street racing and tracks and speaking of tracks there's a bunch of them this is a great family game and could be fun for so many groups the best thing about this game is it's roll and move done well you got to love it however the cars are pretty damn small and the tracks can get a bit fiddly at times and the sound of a 10 car race is a lot more fun than the reality of playing it Bots would be an excellent addition to the game for a very different take on Dice and racing try a steampunk rally and for a modern diceless take on the same concept, try our next review heat formula D: engine noises not included and if you enjoyed this video hit the notification button like share and subscribe to the channel
