Smoking Bones Updates from Andrew Bosley

The Mill Sep 15, 2026
Transcript 15:59

Hello everyone and welcome to the mill today. Today we're kind of in I feel like almost a limbo space with Stonemire games because we just had our big summer releases with Wingspan Pocket and Duel of Melo and we're waiting for those big fall releases. So what Jamie told us earlier in the year is we're getting the Stonemire copy of Numiji. And the other big one that I know a lot of people like me are super excited about coming is the first game in the what's supposed to be a trilogy of games with Andrew Bosley's Smoking Bones World. And it's we know the next one. We know the first one's coming and from what Jamie has said and what we've kind of heard from Andrew Bosley that's coming up here. We'll probably hear start hearing about it end of September, maybe early October. I we can probably make a really solid guess that it is going to be out at Ashen Spiel which I believe start like Thursday October 22nd whatever that Thursday is is when Essen spiel is. So they're probably going to want it there for that convention.

Hopefully we don't have too much longer to wait. So, what I really wanted to cover today is since Jamie isn't really talking about it yet, Andrew Bosley, the artist and worldbuilder, actually has had a newsletter for his world that is going over some of some little details and giving some little hints. I do mean little hints. So, what I was going to do today was actually bring up his Wits End newsletter because he has a kickstart for the next book in the series coming up. So, if you don't know, so we got this a while ago, but he had a Kickstarter for the Smoking Bones travel guide, and this is kind of the world that we're working with here is the Smoking Bones world. And this kind of airship that was on one of the champion shirts a couple years ago, too, and it took up the three hex's.

So, maybe we have something going on here. I kind of tab just kind of reminder of kind of some things that we'll see. Uh, so let me show you a couple pages in here that I thought might be interesting. So, one, and I bring this up because I'll show it to you again in the newsletter, but this guy right here. All right. His image is also the starting image on Bosley's newsletter. So, I'm really curious like, oh, is he kind of a big deal? Are we going to see more of him? And I'll show you his name when we get to the actual letter. And then let's see what else did I tag? I'm curious cuz there's like these different tabs here like this says like the wonders of brand.

So there's like some of these sections that are in here. So I'm kind of curious how are we building with that? Oh, there's one. I just love this image. I am really hoping at some point I just thought this was absolutely beautiful. visit Glittering Glenn Brier. I really hope we get to visit Glittering Glenn Brier in a game because oh my gosh, that's beautiful. There's definitely some like magical mystical aspects to this world like here. I mean, look at that. And if you don't know, Andrew Bosley also does Everdell. He did tapestry for the artistry. So, very, very big artist in the board game world. And I'm going to show you something that he said. um either in the newsletter or on the Kickstarter page for his next book that's kind of coming out. But yeah, he really talks about how the books that are coming out are tying also with the board games and all of that. So very very excited. So I'm going to share my screen. I will [snorts] start with the wits and newsletter and I'm going to not going to show you the whole piece but I'm focusing on the stone meer parts of it. All right. So give me one sec. Let me share my screen.

All right. What's on newsletter? Let's do that. Okay. So, what we have going on here is go get back to the top. All right. So, this is what I was talking about. That one guy is like the starting image here with the airship. Okay. So, I'm kind of curious like is he like he's important and we're g you're going to see him lower down here. [snorts] So, newsletter as you can see ton of smoking bone updates. All right. This one isn't really applying to Stonemire games here. This is what's applying to Stonemire games. So, let's go smoking bones. So, that guy's name is Red Jones and the new release is going to be the burning heart.

All right. So, these are just kind of this is the release. So, you can kind of see it looks like the style of the book I was just showing you. So, this is Red Jones and the Burning Heart, the Smoking Bone Saga, book one. All right. Let's see. So, this is the saga consists of a series of books and supporting board games. So that was one of the lines I was like, "Oh, so it's supporting board games. So is this me and like different games are going to coincide with certain parts of the books?" I am super curious and I really don't know. So I'm very well I've seen parts of the new game. I don't know like all these connection pieces and I'm not talking about it yet. But Red Jones and the Burning Heart is available to read on the Smoking Bone website right now.

So, if you want to get real curious, you can actually go and read it. I think I'm going to wait cuz I'm definitely going to back the book and I love the illustrations with it and I love physical books. So, I might wait for that. But, and here's another image. I don't know what's going on, but this is the Red Jones guy with the little kid. Um, it says second, you can get a PDF download of the Burning Heart when you join the Smoking Bones mailing list. So, if that's something you want, you can do that. And then yeah, there's going to be a hard book version in Kickstarter in November. So, I think that's what I'm going to get because it says it's similar to that travel guide that I was just showing that I really like. Uh, all right. Let's see. And then here's the part I figured everyone's kind of curious about, and this is why I'm kind of focusing our episode today on it.

First Smoking Bones Stone Meyer game. So, as he says, he can't release any details. All right. But he has kind of looked at some of the public hints Jamie has said. All right. So, he has Jamie and Stonemare games linked here. And this is where I was getting the upcoming announcement for the new game coming in late September. So, I feel like Jamie might have said it might even be early October. So, we're still a little bit out. Jamie hasn't isn't saying anything. All he told us earlier in the year is it is a midweight euro by a new designer. Okay. But this is interesting. So Andrew Bosley is going to be at Essen Spiel in October at the Stone Meer booth just hanging out. So if you are going to Essen Spiel, you can see Andrew Bosley and probably I'm guessing sign something Stone Meer uh while he's there. Um, he says, "I'd highly recommend paying attention to the Wits End in Stonemer throughout September and October," which is this is the wits end part because what he can say is he says the game turns out incredible and it's possible he has an early coffee on his early copy on his coffee table and he can't stop looking at it. So, so here is this. he shared a very very tiny secret photo of his copy. So that's kind of curious.

So if you want to get really into it, you can try to figure out what any of that means. Um but then he talks about a big event on their Discord. And then let's see, website and store updates. I will show you the Smoking Bone website. It's pretty neat. Let's see the online version of the travel guide and then okay so this is just getting on kind of the mailing list and stuff. Don't think anymore of this is this is just telling you how to follow to get more. So the newsletter for monthly updates and a discord. All right. So what I am going to do now is I'm going to switch to he mentions this Smoking Bones website. So that's what I'm going to switch us to. So, give me one second and we'll switch over to that one.

All right. Smoking bones. Okay. So, here's the Smoking Bones website. Once again, this Redone guy is all over the place here. He has like rocket things on his arm, so he's kind of flying. All right, so this is Red Jones. Meet Red Jones, captain of the Smoking Bones Travel Company. So that's the SBTC, which we saw in that other picture. He and his crew are ready to take you along as they discover, promote, and protect the magical places of the Northlands. And while dealing with deadly pirates, magical weather, and troublesome tourists. All right, so illustrated novels saga. Once again, he puts here, "In addition, the saga will be supported by a trilogy of board games published in partnership by the acclaimed Stonemer Games. alternating chronologically every book you read and every game you play carries the story forward. So I am really curious like what that exactly means. Does that mean okay we start with a travel guide and now does the game move that story forward and then he'll have this burning heart book to move it forward or are they going to kind of overlap a little bit or is like the board game telling its own story? So, I think that's going to be fun for us all to explore and figure out as we go. Um, travelers want to get deeper. And then travel guides chart the wonders, dangers, and local customs of the north northlands in Brandemir, which is the one I just showed you. Um, so, yep,

there's the travel guide. Okay. So, and here's that other part with Stonemire Games series game set in the Smoking Bone World. the games currently being developed by experienced designers and of course will be art directed and illustrated by Andrew Bosley and just telling it once again that it's coming out in Q4 2024. We have some more pictures. Oo, so a lot of cool pictures. And then if you go and you click here, go to the burning heart, it kind of gives you a little bit more about the burning heart, which is his book that you can read digitally and it's going to have the Kickstarter in November to like see a little bit to get the actual copies. All right. So, yep, there's the PDF version which come There we go. All right. So, that is kind of his website and things to note.

But, yeah, I'm really curious exactly how these are going to play off back and forth and off of each other. The last thing I'm going to show you on here is as he brings up the Kickstarter. So, you know, Andrew Bosley's obviously working real close with all this, so I figure I will just keep giving him these shoutouts. And honestly, I don't know about you guys, I'm crazy excited about this. So kind of exploring all of this I find to be fun and interesting. Thought you guys might too. So it's launching soon. Said his thing says November. Notice and this is also interesting. So this is Andrew Bosley's Kickstarter and he very prominently still has the Stonem logo right there. So the first episode in the Smoking Bone Saga and the companion book to the upcoming game published by Stonemer Games. So here he's saying it's a companion to the upcoming game. That's interesting.

Very cool. Okay. And then it goes more into this. Okay. Once again, this Red Jones guy. And then what else do we have here? So, Red Jones, the Burning Heart is a 96page hardbound book illustrated by him. And the Burning Heart. Bold Captain Jones sets out hoping to find a mysterious treasure of history. The fabled heart of the withermark. But the puzzle can't be completed without the most important piece. A young alley named Veil. Well, now we know who the kid is. With his new friend, Red Shreks through fire, water, and earth to unlock buried secrets. Sounds really cool. I'm very excited to read this. All right. And so then, yeah, this is literally is the opening Kickstarter page. And what's this about tabletop games? And so we have Jamie here with his own quote.

So it says, "When you close the pages of the burning heart, the bigger adventure is only starting. Andrew Bosley and Witend Studios are excited to be partnering with Stonemire Games, which will be releasing three unique games set in the high-flying world of Smoking Bones. Working with Jamie and other amazing designers, the epic tales of Red Jones and the Smoking Bones will alternate between narrative books and interactive games, storytelling until the conclusion, the fate of Northlands are decided." So is completely coincide with one another. And here it does say that looks like the Epic Tales of Red Jones are going to be part of it. So Red Jones is probably in the board game. I think that is a safe one to say. All right. But that's what I have here. So I figured, hey, while we're waiting, we can have some fun. What do you think you've noticed? If you have the Smoking Bones book, the first one, what are you thinking? if you pay more close attention to Andrew Bosley and his newsletters with Smoking Bones. Is there anything else that you have found? Any other clues that I've missed? Because I am just starting to follow more of Andrew Bosley's stuff on there besides this. I also just got the book. I know some people got a lot of other cool stuff in this last Kickstarter, but if you notice any details or if you have any fun ideas or things that you want to see or that you're looking forward to, let me know. And hopefully here in a two or 3 weeks we can start seeing the Stonemire end of all of this. Uh the

only other note I was going to say non-smoking bones related and talking about secret hints that were dropped. Uh Jamie recently within the last couple weeks mentioned on Board Game Geek that someone had come up with an idea for Worms Pocket and he said we're working on it already. [snorts] So Jamie did confirm they are working on a wormspan pocket for those who are loving wingspan pocket. So we have excitement I guess but those are kind of the I would say Andrew Bosley dropping some hints in that one little image of the game is kind of the biggest funnest thing. And then we also have the worms pocket little kind of secret dropped. But that's what I have for you today. And I said, can't wait to actually start being able to see what Jamie has to say on the more games part versus Andrew Bosley just kind of giving us little hints. But I hope you have a good week and I will see you next time on the mail. Let me know your guesses or if I missed any other clues that you've seen if you're paying even closer attention to what Bosley has put up. And I'll talk to you next time on the Mail. Bye.
