The Hungry Gamer's Steam and Cheese Playthrough

Oo, that looks tasty. Welcome folks to the Hungry Gamer is back with another playthrough. And today I'm doing a two-handed playthrough of Steam and Cheese, designed by Alexander Ryan with art by Roman Kusharski and published by Skeleig Games. Now, before I get started, I will note just a couple of things. First thing is I will not be giving my thoughts on the game as I do this playthrough, but you can check out my preview video which is linked down in the description if you would like to know my thoughts on the game. Additionally, this is not going to be a how to play video. There is a link to a how to play video that I did down in my description also. And so what I've done is set this up for a two-player game and I will be playing both sides of it as I remove a few more last tokens here and there that I forgot to remove after my last play. Just before I get started, I will say that the overseer wheel here I'm actually going to keep off the board and I'll just show it every round as I place it back out. And that is simply because it's not used all the time. And I need a little bit more space here to get the zeppelin in right here on the edge and a little more space to add bonus tiles to the other action wheels as I go through the game. For the most part, I have the game set up as it would be set up for the first play that you do where the purple dice are in specific locations and all of the action wheels have been seated in a specific way. I will probably not do the entire playthrough. Rather, I'll probably go through somewhere between two and four
rounds depending on how long that takes, but that will give you the idea of how the game is played. Now, there's a couple last bits of setup that I have to do. First, I have to deal to each player a tile here for starting materials. And so, my green player here is going to start with five coins and four renet. And my red player will have five coins and four raw milk. And I'll put the coins there like so. And the four milk and the four renet. And then these will go out of the game. And the last thing I'll say is it is a little bit hard to see the clear milk cubes, but I will try to keep you apprised of what is happening on each play. And we're going to let the red player be the first player for the first round. Red is going to start with a bonus of three coins every time a yellow die is drafted. And green is going to start with a bonus of just five coins. right away.
And here we go. We'll go ahead and roll our dice here. And I'll place these out so we can see them. Okay, so lots of choices. As you can see, we're a little bit cramped here, but again, I think we're going to be just fine. And so, starting out here, red's going to go first. And since red gets a bonus of coins, we're going to go a bit of a little coin strat here. They're going to take four more coins. and their bonus gets them another three. So that's going to bring them immediately up and you can barely see the coins here on the side. That's going to bring them up to 12 total coins. Make a little more space for them. I think the first thing that we need to do is since I have money, I want to send out one of my mouse assistants.
And my question is where should I send them? So I have lots of milk right now. So maybe I don't want to do that. What I really need is some renet. So, I need to send over here to the assistant wheel. So, I'm going to spend five bucks. And to get myself there, I need to go onto this track up there. And so, I am going to put it with the six facing the wheel. And then, unfortunately, I can't do much else. So, I'm going to have the six facing the wheel and the five facing the order. So, with my five order power, I'm going to go ahead and get this right here for two of my order power. And then 3, four, five. I'll get this one over here because this one's actually be pretty easy to fulfill. And I like that.
Then we will slide everything down here. And so my reason for that is it gives me a target right away as far as an order goes, but more importantly, it's going to let me get a bunch of renet so I'll be able to make my cheese. And so I'm going to pop out here onto the middle ring and I'm going to go one, two, three, four, five, six. And each one of these will get me two. So that's two, four, five, six, seven. That'll be seven renet. And that does not spoil. And now I'm going to be able to make some cheese. And so then end of my turn, I start to spoil. Now that was a good play. But now the challenge for green is there's not a really good way to get orders cuz pasteurizing doesn't do a lot for me unless I need some pasteurized cheese on one of these orders. So if I get this order here that actually needs pasteurized cheese. So that might be worth doing if I kind of follow the same path. And I might do that and kind of go down the pasteurized cheese path. But again, there's not a lot of milk to be had.
So, I think what I'm going to do, I am going to take some milk. So, that'll give me two. And then I think I'm going to run up onto the zeppelin up here because I think what I'm going to try to do instead is I'm going to try to well I was thinking of running up to the zeppelin and getting spices for later on, but I don't I don't think that's the best move. So, I think instead what I'm going to do is I'm I'm actually also going to try to send myself out over here. And so, to do that, I'm actually going to take my guy right here, and I'm going to place him on my spot, which will give me a five strength for going out onto this wheel.
But instead, I'm going to put myself out here on the outer wheel and go one, two, three, four, five. That'll give me 1 2 3 4 5 six more milk. And then all of that milk is going to start to spoil. Now, my order over here needs pasteurized milk. And so, I think what I want to do because I need to get to six pasteurized milk, I'm going to take this two this two right here and get two more milk. Then, whoops. This two, I'm going to place it right here with the six facing the pasteurize. So now all of this milk is pasteurized.
And then I'm blocked going this way. So all I can do is get more orders. So I might as well get a three power order. And I will simply do another machine right here that I will be able to use later on. Again, just trying to get one order fulfilled before the end of the first round. It can be, in my experience, hard to fill an order in the first round. And so, I'm going to see if I can make that happen. Now, I've actually now blocked green from doing a pasteurize, which is kind of what Green wanted to do with all of this stuff here. So, instead, I think what I'm going to have to do with green is I don't need more milk. I could get some spice. I can't press any cheese because I don't have any cheese and I don't have a lot of coins. So, I think what I'm actually going to do is unfortunately I think this is almost a wasted turn for me because I'm going to go ahead and get six spice. And all I'm going to do is run around the wheel. And unfortunately, I can't do this action over here because I don't have any machines. But I guess what I could do if I had the money, I could go here and just get some bonus tiles, which maybe that's not a bad move because all I'm going to get over there
is milk. So I think instead I'm going to put it over here. And since I have at least All right, a little rewind. Instead, I'm going to take this one here. And that will allow me to place a six facing the order. And even though I can't fulfill an order, I can get the bonus tiles. And so a strength six actually gets me two bonus tiles, which will be right here, which will be adding milk when you get something or adding an order, fulfill order when you are doing another action. So that's actually going to be pretty good. And there is for five bonus tiles a way to get an achievement there. So I'm going to hold on to them. I'm not going to equip them anywhere yet. And then everything is going to move down.
And that's going to bring us back over here. Now, he's going to get the bonus if he drafts another yellow die, which maybe is what I want to do because what I need to do is make cheese. So, I think I'm going to draft this die right here. And that's going to give me five coins. And I want to make some cheese. So, I'm going to take this and face it with my six facing the cheese here. And then and then my three facing the upper part of the zeppelin. So, I'll do the zeppelin first. That's going to cost me 10 coins. Send another guy out onto the zeppelin where he'll go one here. That's going to get me a point. And I have to the upper spot, two, three. So, that's going to be two spice and a point. Then I can make six cheese. And so now I'm going to make six pasteurized soft cheese.
And that will cost me six renet to do that. And then that brings us back to green. And green's going to be hit with a problem here because green's going to have a lot of spoilage because I can't pasteurize. I've used that right here. Best thing I can do is make as much cheese as I can. So not great. for me. I could get a coin. I don't have enough coins to run around up there. So, I think I'm just going to come here and get six spice. Unfortunately, I can't run up here because I don't have the money, but I will be able to make four cheese.
So, that's not the worst. But then unfortunately at the end of my turn, all of that expires now. So that's going to kind of make me think I need to go for this goal right here and get a bunch of milk and let it expire for a little bit. And that might put me into a better position. Then we come right back over here. And now we are going to move our overseer. So I'm going to bring that right here so we can see that. And so for our red, we're gonna go ahead. I'm not interested. Well, getting some more spice isn't bad because if I get 16 spice, I can do a thing. So, I think I'm actually going to do the two here and move one, two. So now every time I get spice, the bottom, the number on the bottom will give me movement up here. So I'm gonna need to have some coins so I can deal with that.
And then for green, I had a serious money shortage. Let's see. One, two, three, four. I could get points right away. I could get points when I hit the zeppelin or points when I get milk. Well, I'm going to try to chase that milk strat. So I'm going to use this one and move here. And then that way every time I draft a milk dye, I will gain points. I'm going to move this one off here. And now we are entering into round two. Collect all the dice. And we are set to start the next round. All right. And round two. And move this on over. And we'll reroll the dice. Well, I don't love any of that, but I do need to get some orders over here. Over here, I still have an order that I'm going to be able to fulfill this round. And I have some machines I can put up, but I'm also kind of Oh, no. I don't need any machines.
I do machines right here. If I have four machines here, I can accomplish that goal. So, I think I'm going to maybe chase that also. Anyhow, but green, I'm going to get points for white. So, I'm going to go ahead and do that. I'm going to take the three, get three milk, and I'm going to put it somewhere I can buy some orders here. So, I'm going to place it here. And that's going to let me get an order for three. I'm going to get this one right here. I'm going to work towards some pasteurized stuff. Oh, and I think I'm going to go ahead and attach this bonus here, which means I will have gotten two more milk here and a point.
And so I probably should have kept it for the bonus right here, but I think I want to get those points. And then pasteurize of six. So I'm just going to pasteurize all of it. Just like that. And I also need to get someone else up on the zeppelin because every time red drafts brown, the spice dye or the renet die, I should say. Oh, I took spice I think when I took the I've been taking spice when I took the brown dye. Oh, that's a stupid mistake. Well, I will just Let's see. He's up there. So, he definitely has that two spice. There's no way I have all this spice because I'm not up there. So, all this spice should be renet. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10. So, I could have had more cheese.
But that's the mistake I've made. And now we are fixed there. Anyhow, so back over here. I'm trying I need to fulfill an order right now. That's what I need to do. And so we have that right here. It's just one order, but I want to get to at least a three so I can get a bonus tile. I do need some renet. So I'm going to take this one.
Get six remnant right here. Make my way towards getting that cheese. And I want to fill the order and get on the bottom side up here. Okay. So, I'm filling one order, but I want it to have at least a strength of three. So, here we go. So, strength of four over there. I will fill this order for six pasteurized cream which will give me six points
and three bucks. And I will keep this card. Then I'm going to pull the mouse back because you can do that voluntarily. And I'm going to pull this guy back also. And then I'm going to spend the five that I have for using this here.
Before I do that, because I got because I placed the brown dye. There we are. I actually get to move a one onto the zeppelin. So I pull him back. Pay the guy. He goes over to here, which is another point. Then I will use the five point going this way to move five. So that is one spice. And I lose a buck. I don't have the buck. Oh, one, two, three, four, five. And I don't actually recall if I actually lose anything because I don't have the money. Oh, that's interesting. I couldn't send him up there.
All of that actually couldn't happen. I don't get to do that bonus because I didn't have the money. I needed to complete the order to get the money. So, this first action when I got the die, drafted the die means I can't go there. So, all of that happens afterwards. I don't get the bonus, but I do get one, two, three, four, five. So, I do get two here. And I do and I think I just Nothing happens with the negative one because I have nothing. Oh, and I did not do that last turn. So, what I need to do is I need to press some cheese here. So, how am I going to do that?
I got plenty of renet. So, I need money. Take the five.
[snorts]
Now I got 10 and press some cheese. Need to cut some cheese. And I'm going to do it with the six here. And I could send somebody up. All right. So I'm going to go here with the six, which will let me do all these five over here.
And now I'm getting making my way towards getting here to do my order. And then that's going to give me a three if I spend 10 to put this guy out. And it is on the top of the zeppelin. So we go one for a point. Two, three, four. Oh, three. And that'll be two spices. Okay. Back over here. I need to buy more stuff because I want to try to get this machine bonus. So, that's what I need to do. So, I'm going to take this five here. Get five coins. Mark it over here. I will simply sadly I don't have any cheese.
I need the cheese to do the things, but nope. I'm going to do this. So, that'll be a six. And I can pasteurize three, but I have none. But for my six, I will go three and six. And then I will spend. Oh, wait. You don't have to spend anything to do this. Now I have four. I'll go right here and get 15 points. Just like that. Back to green. Got plenty. I need milk. That's what I need. So, I need to go around this track here. So, I'm going to go ahead and take one of the ones.
Ah, is that what I want to do? That's not what I want to do. I'm going to take the four. Oh, green gets a bonus if I take the the milk. I'm going to take the milk cuz I get that bonus. One milk and a point. I need to press is what I need to do. But I also need more milk so I can make my way towards this. That's what I'm going to do. So I'm going to take the five and the four. So five there. And I will go one, two, three, four, five. So this give me six more milk. Then four here. I'm buying. Oops. Fix that. Now that's that's a good one to get out there. What do I want? You know, another order. If I can get an order, I can use my raw milk. Oo, look at that. That's a good one.
That's a quick, easy one, too. I can chase. Oh, this is a really good one. That's six. Oh, I have five. I can't get that. Dang. So, I will in Oh, no. There's three to get that done. There we go. So, three. And then I think I will also go ahead and grab this one for later. Four, five. And so, I now actually have an order here that I can actually fulfill over here on the next turn. Oh, I'm not going to get another job. Okay, next round to fill that order. Ah, it happens so fast. Okay, then back over here. Oh, I had all of this moves.
And then back over here, I have no milk. I got nothing. I have nobody out there. I do have some money. I could pull him back. I'm going to take the one here.
Before that, I believe I believe he was right here. I think cuz I pulled that back. I shouldn't have, but instead I am still going to take this one. Get my one milk. No, my one renet is what I'm going to do. But I'm going to place it here. No. So to get to my one renet and then because I have my overseer here on the die, I get to do a six on the bottom here. So I will go one, two, three, four, five, six. So, I'm going to lose two bucks.
Going to get another spice. I'll get a point. I get three points and then another four spice. And then for my action, a lot of spice. What I really need is some cheese. And oh, I can't put a guy out because I spent all that. Oh, crud, crud, crud, crud, crud, crud. But I'm getting close to this spice. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10. I got 10 of it. And I think I think I'm just going to send him the rest of the way. Go. One, get another spice. Two, lose the rest of my money. Three, four, five, all the way over. And another spice and four points.
Back over here. And oh, I don't think I advanced this last turn. And I'm just going to get to move everything or pick one and move my overseer. I've done poorly. Done very poorly. And take the four and move myself around. So, I'm taking the four, moving myself around to where I can get paid more money because I'm just cash strapped right now. And then for red. Oh, and then all of this. Do I have enough trash yet? I think I do. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Yes, I got plenty of trash. This one I can bring out for free. Put right here for 15 points.
And I'm going to take the one. So, move the over right here and get five points. All right. And that's the end of round two. Moving to round three. Okay. So, round three. And boy, I've put myself in a spot over here with all this trash. I did get the points, so that's good. I have a bunch of machines over here on the red side. So, I think I need to try to work on getting some of those out. The problem is I don't have a lot of money. So, I may have hamstrung myself again.
I have a ton of spice, which is totally useless to me. So, I'm not sure what I was thinking there. Well, no. I Oh, I Oh, I know. That's what I was thinking. I was thinking of trying to get that. So, let's see. I have 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12. So, if I can get four more spice, I can claim that goal. But to do that, I need to get up over here. So, I'm at the end. I'm just going to go ahead and pull my assistant back before I've done anything. I need milk cuz I need to make some more cheese. So, I need to get some goals here and some cheese. Now, if I can get six raw milk, soft cheese, I can get this goal. So, what I need to do is get this goal. And there we go. I got six milk. I got plenty of renet.
Boom. I'm claiming this one. Then I need to get here. And then, oh, that's going to be great. Oh my gosh. When did I get good at this game, y'all? So, I got six milk and I'm going to go here. So, I'm putting the five facing this way. So, I get five going up the zeppelin and I'll get three cheese. There we go. Three cheese there. So, it's going to be another turn before I can finish this. But that's okay. And then I'm going to pay Oh, shoot. I don't have enough money. NO. OH, I thought I had such a good play going.
Okay. Okay. I'm still going to get the six there and instead I'm h [sighs] so many things I want to do. All right. So, instead I don't want pasteurized. So, what I'm going to do instead is So, I'm going to go right here and I'm going to get a five discount to put this dude here out onto the board and I'm going to get a two, which will let me get this order right here. So, I'll do my two. I'll claim this one. Then, I get a five discount. And I'm going to put out let's see this one here which is complete orders and press cheese. And so I want to complete orders. I don't really actually I don't no I don't care about pressing cheese really.
So instead I think I'm going to do this one here which is zeppelin and pressed cheese. And so I'm going to replace I'm just going to replace the pressed cheese action. Cost me five. There we go. And it cost me five because I get a five discount because it's a five facing that way. Then end around you move. Don't know why I have another one in my hand. All right. Now I need to do some serious cheese pressing action because I need to get all of these or four of these over here.
So that's I need eight press is what I need. And I don't need milk. I do need money. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to take this here and get six coin. And because I drafted yellow dye, I get three more coins. And as a reminder, that's because of where I've placed myself on the overseer track. And so for pressing cheese, I could press an Zeppelin. That's actually really good. So I'm going to hit this here. And I'm going to hit the Zeppelin and press for five. and my eliminate trash for three. So, eliminate three trash. Then I'm going to go and just because I always tend to forget, I'm just going to put this here so I remember where I started. One, two, three, four, five. So, I'm going to lose three coins, but I'm going to get one, two spice, and a point.
And I get my five press. So, I'm simply going to go boom, move that to there. And that does give me one trash. Now I need to make cheese over here. So I need Oh, I need pasteurize mode. I got to pasteurize first. So I need to do that right now. So I want to be able to do six all six of them. So I can't take the six dye face up. I think I don't need renet. I don't need milk. So, I'm going to take this three, which will give me three coins. And I need to pasteurize all six. So, that needs to go like this, which means I get a five order over here.
All of these get pasteurized. And I can get a five order. I got so much stuff. So, the orders don't matter too much at this moment. So, I'm just going to take these two here for three and two. And so, I'm working towards both getting this goal and excuse me, getting this contract I'm working on, but also if I can get some more spice, which I need to send someone back out here. So, I don't have the money for that, but I'm working towards getting the spice so I can claim a knack for spices. But I think the first thing I got to do is fill the order. But oh, getting all that milk. That's good, too. But I'm also not on these tracks. Okay, all this moves down. So, I need to do more pressing. So, I need lots of pressing. So, I got two orders that I can work on.
Oh man, I need I need more milk. I need I need everything. So, let's see. Ah, so this is where I need to go because at the very least I need to move four over. So, I think this is my die. That's going to get me six and then plus three. So, get me nine coins. So, now I got money. Now I can put people out there. Now it's coming together. And I'm going to go with a five and a three. So the three is facing up here. Let's toss three more trash. I am going to get one of those back because I'm going to do a press of five. All these are going to move over to there, which means on my last turn, I will be able to fulfill an order.
Last turn over here. So I wanted to fulfill. So I need to make cheese. If I can make six. Can I cut six cheese? Ah, I can't cut and fulfill. Dang it. So, this is where had I been smarter and thought ahead, I could have bought machines to do that. I was just buying machines that I could afford to get the goal. Huh. Now, green does have this bonus tile. So, green's going to be able to fulfill its order and do something else on its turn. So that's I feel like green's actually turning the corner here while red is still garbage at life. But I have to cut cheese. That's all I can do. I need to take anything that is not a one or a six on the top. So I'm actually going to take this five and get five more milk. I will have it six facing down.
And then ah what a waste. What a waste. What a waste of two actions. But I guess I'll I can block green from doing those things. So I'm going to cut six cheese. So I need to get all six of these. Boom. And that's going to be three six renet. And I can't do the other action. Now I could have chosen something different and place that over here. But I think basically since I couldn't do the two things I want, I'm now ready for the next round. I can complete one of my objectives here. And maybe if I plan well, I can actually get more than one of those done.
Now, the last draft over here, I think I'm going to put out my tile here. I wanted to kind of save it to try to get the objective, but I think I'd rather sell. I'm short. I mean, I'm not short on cash at the moment, but cash is always hard. Okay. So, what I want to do is I'm going to get one point because I'm going to put this tile out. Put it all the way up there. And then I think I'm going to get the renet. I'm going to get five renet. So, I got tons of renet here. And I'm going to place it up here. So, I'm not going to get the benefit from that. But I think I think that's okay.
Oh, wait, wait, wait. No, I want to fulfill the order. What am I doing? What am I doing? What am I doing? Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's what I wanted. There we go. So, I'm place it here with the six facing that way. So, I'm going to get a six. Move around the thing and fulfill the order. Since it's a six order, that's going to be two more bonus tiles, which I get right here. And I get to go six times around the track here. So, one, two, three, four, five, six. So, I'm going to get one, two, three, four more milk. and my bonus there, which is fulfill my order. And I didn't get nine of the cheese there, but I did get four. So, I'm going to sell those four, which would be 12 points and four bucks. And I now have a bonus that I have right down there. I'll just kind of tuck that under my board here. It's just off camera, but it is there. Then everything spoils. And I forgot the spoilage over here. Holy crap, the spoilage is constant. Then we're going to move our dice here. So I need [sighs] I need money over here. I have all these machines.
So I think Oh, but it's only ones and twos. So I I think I would be chasing the milk next round. So I'm actually going to move here and get one point for every milk that I get. Then over here, I think I want to be able to activate on the zeppelin because I'm there every time I draft a Reddit die. And so that's where we are. And we'd move up to here. Move this over here. Collect the dice and rule. Now, I'm going to go ahead and stop right here because it's been about an hour. And this should give you a good idea of how this game is played.
