Let's Play LOVECRAFT LETTER | Board Game Club

[Music] hello I'm Laurie from Noel's Bard and welcome to board game club where the first rule of board game club is only poetry or Madness could do justice to the noises every week we gather a group of our friends here in the nrb studio to show you just how much fun board gaming can be and this week we're playing Lovecraft letter designed by seiji Kanai and published by alderak in this game players are investigators traveling to Egypt in search of their lost cousin and they will be gathering Clues on the way in an attempt to find him they do that by drawing cards from this deck and playing them in front of them the player who has the highest card at the end of the game is the winner of the round however there are multiple ways to be knocked out of the round let's very quickly talk you through the way the game goes because at the beginning of the game every player is going to be dealt one card from the central deck we're also going to take one card out as a little bit of forbidden knowledge to stop people being able to card count the very basic turn structure is you pick up a card you look at the two cards in your hand and you choose one of them to play then you activate its power in this case I'm going to play the great race of yif which allows me to compare my card with somebody else and if I have a higher value card they're out of the game spoiler alert I do a bad one now I'll quickly explain what each card does for you but we'll obviously go over it again in the video when it comes up now once allow you to guess what card somebody has in their hand you can't guess the value of one if you get it correct they're out of the round twos allow you to take a sneaky peek at somebody else's hand which is really powerful if you then have a one the next time because you know what they've got three is already mentioned allows you to compare cards with somebody and if you have a higher value card they're knocked out of the round 4 protects you from anybody else's Shenanigans so you can't be picked for a three nobody can guess your card with a one five forces another player to discard their hand there are certain cards in the deck like the eights that you don't want to discard under any circumstances because they knock you out of the round sixes allow you to trade cards with another player this is really useful if you know they have a higher value card and the end of the round I.E the end of this deck is coming up seven just has to be discarded for any point you have a card with a value of five or higher in your hand and eight you don't want to be discarding under any circumstances because an eight means that you are out of the round the game will essentially go on with players playing these cards to try and knock each other out of the rounds or just to hoard more powerful cards until this deck Runs Out in which case everyone will reveal the cards in their hand and the player with the highest value card wins now there is one other wrinkle to this game because this is Lovecraft letter and those are insane cards cards directly related to the Sulu Mythos like this guy tap this guy him if you ever have one of those in your discard pile that means that you have gone insane this does two things this means that on the start of your turn you have to pass a sanity check to stay in the round which means for every Insanity card you have in your discard pile you need to flip over and discard the top card of the deck if you ever flip over another Green Card you're out you went mad I'm okay I'm I'm totally keeping it together guys I'm fine Insanity cards also let you do something else and that is play with a different effect for instance if I drew this card off the top of the deck and I was like which one will I play I'm gonna play The Deep ones the Deep ones are a green card and they have the same effect as the regular one value cards which are the investigators which let you guess the card in another player's hand but they also have a secondary effect for players who have already gone insane in this case choose another player if they have a one in their hand they are knocked out of the round if they don't you then get to use the regular effect of the one card and try and guess what card they have these are very powerful effects but every time you play one you run the risk of accruing more madness because now I've played the Deep ones as well I have to flip over two cards from this deck on my next turn and if I turn over a green I am out of the round the very last thing that Insanity brings to bear on the game is the scoring because it matters whether you are insane or sane when you win around when you win around are you going to gain one of these poker chips either on the same side or the Mad side it takes two sane round victories to win the overall game or it takes three insane victories to win the game winning insane is much easier because your cards are more powerful and you're more likely to have to play them whereas winning sane is harder to do in a round but makes winning the game that little bit easier so just to reiterate around is going to see players drawing one card from the deck to match with the one in their hand picking one of the cards to play and trying to knock each other out if you're ever the last remaining player in a round guess what you've won however if multiple players manage to survive until the deck runs out everyone reveals the card in their hand and the one with the highest value is going to win let's have a little look shall we I've classic board game I feel like I've gone insane yeah well this is this is the thing about Lovecraft letter and a Twist love letter is a game about trying to sneak Love Letters to a princess and trying not to get caught Lovecraft letter is about trying to find Clues because your cousin has gone mission missing in Egypt and you have to look for Clues without going insane obviously the Lovecraft version of insanely which you've seen something too far beyond human comprehension in your mind just breaks into not actual insanity but the thing is some of these Clues are things like you know uh deep ones cthulhui bid one of them is just actually Cthulhu it's like I found a clue he's over there coming out of the seat Holly do your joke clue [Applause] shall we work out who's going to go first how do we know how do we know oh my God how do we figure it out you figure it out sorry using Terry the tower here [Music] the times [Laughter] which one of us let's go block party it's a low dexterity day it's a real load that story today for me I apologize in advance no oh that's that way oh gosh [Applause] this is insanity oh no the pressure it's up there right we've discovered we've called Cthulhu Because He Lives in the tower Holly oh my God the cast is broken okay okay okay that's fine that was insane what just happened three five are they going first okay okay Tower oh Tower of death oh Lord send your card I'm going to play the Liber yvonis which is an evil book and a number four oh on a four you cannot be chosen as part of the effects of other players cards until the start of your next turn so you can't touch me because I've got this book and are you saying I am now oh no and is that because this little green thing that's because this yeah it's because this card is a an insanity card because it is marked with green the other cards are sort of paper colored okay what's that color beige yeah beige beige regular color regularly so black draw a card all right I am going to discard the silver key you must discard this card if you have another card with a number higher than four in your hands oh so that is a that is a card with a number so that's a clue we can follow this we can work out what Blair's got in her hand because Blair probably has a five there are two fives in the game probably a five could be a problem in the game or it could be number eight probably which is cool yes it is tentacles in your pocket are you just pleased to see there's too many bits for you good good shout and I'm gonna guess you you just pick the number uh you must discard it's kind of a higher number than four so you must have a card that's higher than four maybe it gives me an option of four different cards I don't have to though you just have to pick the number I just gotta pick the number it can also be a seven because there is a nice version of the seven as well so one and she's a player yep oh sweet six no so close oh that's a good track that that narrows down the clues it's not far unless it's a big it's a big brain Bluff by Blair because you don't have to discard that you can choose to discard that even if even if Blair had something that wasn't my brains are so big there are some big brains in a blur some big breasts are black there you go we've had lunch okay I'm gonna play investigators too why I'm gonna say five no no she's got to turn down insanity card in front of me which means before I continue my turn I must do an insanity check and the way you do that is you take the number of insanity cards that are in your discard part and you were just going to reveal uh cards off the top of the deck up to that number I've only got one card so I need to reveal one card if I turn over a normal card it's all good if I turn over a green card though I'm out I'm out yeah so let's let's find out if I get a if I get a play more than one card all right I'll put this over here [Music] yeah no you know we've got you the Hound the hounds of everyone has their starting hand of card singular card we've taken one card out of the deck so no one can card count completely the Amigo brain cases finally set to one side and we're gonna start with although it's um it keeps getting all dust in it on the tube it's just holding it it's holding this brain all bits of leaf and stuff when you go outside it flies to you case we're really good for it meego brain case the Migo brain case you were knocked out of the round oh if you play this card oh but I have to discard a card right now you'd have to discard that card you just keep that card okay meat I have had a lot of features I got gifted a bottle of mead and I drank the Mead when I was a kid was called River Mead but it was not a river made of medium that's a shame kind of wave machine
