Game night. Tonight on game night, Jennifer, Nikki, Lincoln, Kristoff, Mike, and myself, Dave, are going to teach and play Vanity Plates, a game for three to eight players, published by 25th Century and designed by Clarence Simpson. So, stick around because this ought to be fun.

Will you teach us vanity plates? I think is what it says on it.
Yeah, vanity plates. In vanity plates, we are going to try to make uh vanity plates. We're going to do this in three rounds. So, we're going to do three plates throughout the course of the game. And the object is to write a vanity plate that describes who we are as the owner of that plate. And we want people to be able to guess our plates because that's um how scoring is going to happen. And uh here's how each round is going to work. We're all going to get an owner card and a requirements card from these decks. You're going to keep those private to yourself,
but you're going to look at it. So, here's the owner. In this case, I'm an optimist,
and my requirements are NF3. So, what I need to now do is come up with a vanity plate that essentially uses NF3 in that order.
Okay.
To create a vanity plate that an optimist would have in my particular case.
Okay.
The rules for the plate and they're on the plate.
You don't have to use all eight spaces, but you cannot use more than eight characters. All right. Um, you're writing uppercase letters only and numbers.
Um, no vowels, but a three of course can be an E and four can be an A, etc. Um,
no punctuation, no spaces.
Um, and no part of the word. I mean, in the case of Optimist, I don't know what I could do, but like the example they give is if it's like firefighters, you can't be like fight flame because fight is
You're trying to spell optimist with NF3.
Well, I'm trying to get you to optimist with NF3. So, I could do
And they don't have to They just need to be in order along the plate. They don't have to be one after the other, right?

Yeah. Because you're going to see the card. I mean,
in fairness, I had time to look at these two cards before we started. And this was the best I could.

When you're done with your plate, you don't you don't show your plate to anyone either. You're going to keep that secret. And you're going to take your owner card and put it face down in the middle of the table.
Okay. When we are all done with our plates and we all have owner cards in the table, we're gonna add six more owner cards to the middle of the board.
Okay?
Then we're going to flip them all up and read them out so that everybody sees them.
Scramble.
And then one at a time,
I'll start. Let's say I will turn over my plate and show it to all of you.
The first player to shout out which one they think is me gets that point. if they are correct. You are only allowed one guess per plate. So if you shout something out and you're wrong, then you have to wait. You can't guess again till Mike's turn. Okay.
Okay.
All right. If whoever gets that correct gets the owner card and puts it in front of them. So there's one fewer now in the middle. Okay.
I then reveal now my requirements card. Did I meet my requirements? Hey, I did.
If I met my requirements and my card my plate was guessed correctly, I put this card in front of me.
Mhm.
Okay. So, you're going to be collecting owner cards and requirements cards. We're going to do that once and then a second time and then a third round. You're going to get just straight up one point per card.
Whoever has the most cards points wins. Ties are broken in more requirement cards.

And if those are tied, it's a shared victory.

Okay.
Because you you can you can skip using the requirements, but you're not going to score, right?
Correct. You will only let someone else score for your own requirement.

So you you can not use the number card that you have in front of you.
I mean, there's Yes, but you you won't score any points and you'll let someone else score points for your plate.

So, you don't want it. You're better off the other way.

I know. If no one guesses yours, but you met the requirements, do you get the no requirement?
You only get your requirement point if someone guesses your plate.

afraid to play this game
Um but it once you get into the rhythm of at least writing your plate out y
and eight sounds like this and seven can sound like this word and you kind of get into the role of that it it gets easy to write the plates, but then the guessing is a whole other thing. I I am surprised I tied with anybody. I'm surprised I got three cards because that everyone's in any of speed game.

Um so, but I have a lot of fun writing writing out the plates. So, whatever.
What do you think, Kristoff? Well, these kinds of games, the the the score at the end. Yes, someone won, but it's the it's the journey that all together, isn't it?
And I was I was pretty I mean, spinning hands and Potter. I mean, this is just like, oh my god. And I was a bit afraid, too, but then after that one, I was like, okay, no, I will definitely come up with something,
right?
Um because I was afraid I couldn't. But uh this is really fun and this is uh this reminds me of many many many games
but to have it as a license plate thing that makes it kind of unique. I mean it's not a thing inracting the words.
Yes, exactly. It's not a thing in Germany. You only see in Germany in movies we have we don't have these uh No, we don't have them really. But it's uh um I like it. It's fun and it's you you your brain gets so uh fired up trying to be you're like an enigma machine and trying to what is that? What is that?
Well, it's kind of like a little puzzle, right?

But not a hard one necessarily.
No, not not a hard one. But you're proud of yourself. This game made me proud that I figured it out. And this I like a like
Well, we were talking it's like the old game show Bumper Stumpers, which I really enjoyed. So, it's the same idea. I'm glad that they did make a board game out of this. And I do like the little bit of the aspect of yeah of figuring out the puzzle and saying ah it's clever. I do think that the looking at if you play it cooperatively like again so Clover plus this game I think would be great too.

Um I was also a little nervous at the beginning because I'm not good at party games if you haven't figured that out. Um and um I was surprised that I actually did okay.

What's nice about the requirements is they're all letter letter number, right? They don't put the number at the beginning or in the middle, right? So
I mean cuz that's what the way almost every vanity plate is. You're the third person to do it and you can't do so you have to put some other
What's nice about that is you can use the number or you can kind of ignore it. Yeah.

And in the middle of round three, when I was looking at your plate,
I actually had this insane notion that what if your clue specifically related related to the state of Texas? Like I actually thought that you could make a plate that relates to your actual city on your own. I am I am so you think that I that I think so ahead. I'm honest. Well, for example, I mean,
for I mean, I don't like if it was US president, right? Like like if you could be if you could be like I don't know some sort of
or Bush or you know something but I mean that would still get you to president but the idea that it could somehow relate to the
life that is a nice you know I'm always sort of overthinking. Yeah, totally.
Yeah, I I I love the game. It's really fun. Um I was with Nikki. I'm like oh wow cuz you know we misplayed this game. I don't remember exactly who got it, but we did these in any order. We didn't matter. And it doesn't say it on the cards. You know, it's interesting that they have a lot of stuff on
and so we would have actually gotten that no problem. But I loved using it. Uh I was I mean, I got all three. I did all three of my own, which is pretty exciting to be able to do all of them. Um
and uh Mike's got Oh, you got three, too, which is awesome. I mean, I love it. I love the idea of getting them all. Um, you could do I mean you can't because it's only two letters, but you could in theory do me for US president.

Exactly. But uh it's really really really fun and has a lot of you know the the categories again are fun and the little bits of that they give you underneath are helpful to understand and stuff.
I think if you didn't do them in order so much time to the game. Right.

just to move things along if nothing else.
I I also think it adds to the puzzle aspect we [snorts] were talking about earlier. It's really fun to have them in some specific, you know, in some sort of order.
