[Music] We're not going to play mugggins. It's friendly. Yeah, honestly, I'm too rusty. Um, it would it would get ugly and I'm too nice and I just feel really bad winning off the back of everything you missed. Even though in all of our two-player games, I seem to be housing. You say that. We talked about yesterday.

We talked about War of the Ring. We talked about Rebellion. Yeah. Both of which I won off camera. No, I won more than that. Did you? Yeah, I did. We We cheated a little bit. Okay. All right. Whatever. All right. Cribage is a great game. And also, you don't you don't need the board. No, you could just pay writing it down.

121 a race to 121 points, but honestly, the board it's not Listen, he said we're going to play thematic games when I showed up to this. Um, cut for deal. Yeah. All right. Okay. Now I'll shuffle one more time and then um I think the board adds drama, but it also adds a really visual like cue of tempo.

This game's a lot about tempo. I'll talk about it more at the end, but seems to be the word of the year for me at least. I don't know. For everybody, it seems. All right, here we go. you get into the home stretch and uh you can start counting ahead of like, okay, I'm going to have my dealer hand, so I'm going to score twice.

But then I get to score first next time, so it's really three in a row. And you start thinking a lot um about what whether you need to hold cards to score from your hand or you need to play defensively in the pegging to not give away points. And we'll have this on whatever side, whoever the dealer is.

Sure. So you get dealt first. We throw crib cards, then we're going to cut for the community card. So I'll I'll here is my hand. Okay. To start um well curious. Uh okay. I will I'll give you that. We'll put the uh I have no idea what to do with this one. Um All right, we'll discard those. Uh you go ahead here and then we to win.

Flip that up. There we go. Could be. All right, so I dealt it is your honor, sir. Yep. Uh three. Okay. 10 20 30 31 for two four six 14. So uh one one for last. One for last. Okay. And I have a threec card run, which scores three is seven. Yes. The jack is not right. I have no other pairs. I don't have a four to connect up the run.

So, I score seven points. Yep. So, I go from two. I'll buy that to nine. All right. And for yours truly, I have 15 for two, 15 for four. I think that's it. I think that's And not a bit more. Okay, so those are now dead. And now we have the crib. Oh, did you look at that? Nice for you. Bullet for you.

15 for two. 15 for four. 15 for six. That's it. Do you see anything else since we're not playing mugggins? 152 154 156. Wrong jack. No, that's it. Yeah. 156 outscored yourself in the crib. That's Well, I was hedging my bets a little bit and I put that in in case we cut a five. I mean, very bad call.

The most common card in the deck is a 10, so keeping fives or playing around fives, never a bad idea. Um, I think uh one of my favorite rules that I learned when I was home for the holidays actually playing with my dad was that uh a legal cut in any ways there must be at least four cards in both packets.

So, I thought it was three. I'll be honest. I'm not I'm not saying your dad's wrong. Oh, no. I thought it was he wasn't sure. We dug up the Book of Hil from the family game cabinet. Yeah. Good old book of Hoy. And it told us each packet each packet must be uh four. Yeah, I learn I learned something new today.

Here we go. I appreciate that. Okay, so I'll put this here. Yep, it's mine. Okay. That's actually somewhat interesting. Oh jeez. This is So, okay, looking at my hand, I could split that. I could keep that. I could keep those. Like, there's I I don't know the strategy to this game. I haven't played it enough recently.

A run of three cards is three. So, seven. Sorry, my bad. Um, I think that's it. Yeah, that looks all right.

So, seven, two, and wait, two, seven. There we go. I have a I have a weirdly similar hand. Unfortunately, I was not able to string up the run. Okay. Uh, but I have a four flush for four and then a pair for six. Yep. All right. So, those are done. I'll take those. Show me the money. Give me better. We have a 152 154.

Uh, hold on. 152 and then one 67. I buy that. Yes. Yep. Uh, not the jack of the right suit or Okay, I'll take that. All right, cool. So, it sounds like a lot of y'all have played uh I'm so glad somebody right at the start of the stream, maybe even in the intro role, was saying, "We played it a lot in college." I came to college with it.

It was like I I I wasn't really into the hobbyest games when I started at UMass, but like I had cribage. I met one of my best friends who I bang on the show a lot about. My dad's favorite son, my friend Joey. Um him and I play very competitive cribage. That was a legal cut. Now it's four. Um we play a lot of very competitive.

We play stealing points for blood. When we take the train going down to packs unplugged, me, Joey, and our other friend Tom, this is the first game of the year every year. That's awesome. cuz it's early, but we all know how to play. We're We're all willing to compete and play mean. Yes, I appreciate that.

Yeah. Uh yeah. Flames over on Twitch says, "There is always a cribage mini board in a deck in my bag." Always. Always. Yes. Same. My I think for my birthday or Christmas or something over the last couple years, my wife got me the little travel board. It is the size of a deck of cards and it folds around the deck.

You just open it up. We bring it to every bar, every brewery we go to. I really camping is another good one. Yes, that's good call. Yep. Okay. Go thick. [Music] Real chuffed about that. He's with sad. 154. Yep. Okay. And then uh 152 154 52 154 and that's it. Someone asked if I had the flush with my hand. Yeah. So I do not the base of the flush has to be the four cards in your hand. This just in case it wasn't clear on stream. This was a club. So I don't have the four. I do have four spades, but that's you start with the four in hand, then you can add and then add that for the extra point one.

Yeah. Yep. Yes. Uh Shazer asked uh the full slate of games for the stream today. We're starting cribage, obviously. Then when the fellas get here, we're going to start with Rook. Ken's teaching that. I don't neither of us know how to play Rook. uh uh Kyle and I I mean and then we're going to do uh Hearts and Spades as well.

And if if there's interest, like if y'all are enjoying this, like we can bust out others. Like when I was in the Marine Corps, we learned I learned a lot of games. Uh we we didn't have a lot of money uh or a lot of things to spend our money on when we were deployed this at sea. So we we we we played a lot like I learned Tonk.

I learned a whole lot of other like regional type games. So, I'll be kind to myself. I have no idea what to do here. I'm willing to offer my opinion. Noted. Noted. Um, you know what? Do I break it up? Probably a mistake. All right. Woohoo. Eh, not really. All right. Oh, I'm leading right now. Not what I wanted to see.

Someone mentioned the gang. We have streamed the gang. We have And it was a lot of fun. Oh, it's phenomenal. And it was a super mixed group of experienced poker players. Yes. And and people who like games and I think we I think we would do it was six players, which is chaos for the game, by the way.

But uh I think we played through twice, we lost one, and then we won one or vice versa. So I was super I everybody in their mother was recommending Oh, Edward. because everybody knows I I used to play poker professionally and I still play it as a as a profitable hobby. Um or really it's my second source of income in all seriousness.

Um and uh so I it had been built up to a point to where I was like it's never going to be it. All derivatives of a game like chess variants and all that stuff, they all suck. None of them are good. It's all going to be disappointing. And come to find out, the gang is absolutely fantastic and I love it.

Super fun. Uh yeah. Yeah. It's it really really damn good. I I think all six of us walked out of there for the most part. For people with the personal collections to curate for other game groups, all of us bought a copy, myself included. Uh, a moment. Something just popped up. Hold on. Uh, okay. All right.

Gosh. Whoever has the good cards, give them up. It's not fair to the rest of us, right? Well, I hate to do that. I hate to do that. I'm smarter than to show uh the assembled watchers my hand because I will be judged for my choice. Um I think I keep that. But the question is what else do we do? I uh I think on the one hand like very straight derivatives of kind of more classic games like chess or poker are maybe uh you know you might come at them with a grain of salt whereas the counter to that is all the great modern trick takers.

Yeah, there's some that are but lot of so many good modern trick takers your honor sir. Oh it sure is. That wind is still going on like it is insane here. Six. Um, 14 23 26 28 31 for two. Two, right? I'm going to have to take a hand to play. I both need to score cuz I need a big hand and keep me.

I have to keep you off of free points and peg and goes, pairs, making it accidental three of a kind. I have to keep you off of it. Uh I have bad news for you, Kyle. I have bad news for me, too. So you don't So only one team has a bid, the winning bid, right? You make your bid. If you make your bid, you score whatever you score. So if you bid 140 and you get 160, great. You got 160 points. You just minus one. Minus one. Yeah. Yeah. Add a minus in front just like in in spades. Yeah. Yep. Okay.

All right. So, this is a practice hand, but so but treat it proper. So, Greg, go. I'm not going to go wild. Um I'm I'm just going to actually honestly one. Okay. Keep it even. That's what we're trying to do. Yeah. So, my my my motto over the year is what's the funniest play? I think especially heavy Carver because we play a lot of games that are long and they have a lot of in-depth thinking in them.

I think I try to plan ahead. I I try to play well, but I just don't sweat it. I I'm having a nice time. I I don't know. At some point, if I see a thing that's four points, I don't worry if I could have gotten five. Yeah. I go b I see the thing that gives me an amount. I have decided that is a good amount.

So if I really wanted to all the way across the next time it comes back around to me if you somehow pull that out and it comes back around to me I will reach well use the wrist.

Well no actually you have down so I've never uh dealt in a casino right obviously never got my license never but I was taught to sit in the box is what it's called like at at the poker table. So what you just said doing the wrist will destroy your your wrist. That is not how they teach. Interesting.

So, how they teach is you hold the cards, right? And then you keep these two fingers tucked in and then you just flitch. You're flicking so that it doesn't wear your your uh doesn't give you carpal tunnel. Although it's hard to it's unnatural to keep those tucked in. So, I tend to do it all, but I also am not dealing thousands of hands a day.

Right. So, exactly. But yeah, it's all in the flicking. It's flicking it. Flicking it keeps the card from Yeah. And you turning over are flicking down. Yeah. Yep. And pitching down. So that's that's So not up and up. And because that's how aerodynamics work. But yeah. Anyway, that was something nobody was asking for, but I just thought I would We were talking about it.

Yeah. The number one card game ideal is cribage, which is just here to So that that goes to literally what I said. Yeah. A lot of creative play. Yeah. Quote, it does. It's because So, this isn't usually passing left. Passing left. Passing left. It's not usually our first time. So, if I won the first time, I don't want to win the same way the second time, right?

Um I would say most of us play that way. We try different things. Like, yeah, I think most of us do that. A lot of times I go for really suboptimal moves. Just I am trying to do whatever I can keep in my head while also running the streams. Yeah, that's that's just the truth of it. You will often hear me quoted on the stream as saying, "Play fast, lose fast." Yes.

Now, I will say the one game where I am actually trying every single time I play uh is Age of Steam. Uh that game I' I've yet to crack uh despite playing well over 50 times. Uh you'd think by now I'd at least have learned something. Thank you, sir. May I have another? Like mechanically, I am aware of how interesting works.

So, I was like, "Well, I'm going to clearly this is the right call." Yeah. I got introduced to um wizard over wizard. Yeah. Oh, I love wizard.

I I was like, "Okay, sure." Like I I have a lot of weird trick takers in my collection game. So good. Yeah. I bought I bought a deck of it. It's in my collection. And eventually we're going to stream tissue. It's funny. I've never really like locked in on climbers. I do like Scout quite a bit. Scout is one of my favorite games of all time.

So, at the poker table the other day, I was at uh Encore and somebody like I this may this may come as a surprise, but I tend to talk a lot. Uh but talking about what we do for a living and talking about obviously what I do and people were like, "Oh, do you?" Somebody's like, "Oh, do you know Scout?" And I was like, "Yes." So that was awesome.

And like Katana, like there are some legitimate Ford gamers that I run into at the uh poker table, which I think is pretty cool. Like but that doesn't surprise me at all. Right. Well, I mean that that vend diagram is that is how I ended up here. Yeah, I know. Right. So it's maybe not a perfect circle, but by God they are I mean come from magic and and poker background for me.

Um so hearts with my sister, dominoes with my brother. And then my other brother though loves to play games.

Like his favorite board game is still Dvert the board game. Okay, get it. It's uh it's a fun party game, but it's not a party game. So, so Cat Bert eventually like gives you things that you have to do the rest of the game.

And one of them is like, "Don't say words with X, Y, or Z in them." And you're like, "Okay, that's fine." And then another one's like, "Don't say words with A, E, or I in them." Good luck. That was a fact. Yeah. Oh. Uh you guys have the spades left, right? Do you just have spades? No. So I mean so I do that. No, you can't. You have to. I have to So I have to do have to. I wanted to, but I wanted you to go a little higher. I I I didn't have the I had too many hearts and I I don't think I had a single hand where I had worse than a three spade suit to the queen.

Yeah. Oh, okay. Right. Where you're like maybe I could duck that trick like going nil is very dangerous. Yeah. Uh yeah. So, I mean, look, it just goes to show that with this and those, like you don't have to buy all these games that we do, but I mean I I mean, we all I mean, there are thousands of hours of play right here.

And I just wanted to highlight that. I think it's a lot of fun. Yeah. Um, and eventually we're going to do a a a Italian trick taking day as well stream to where it's just the I don't know any of them, but Well, they're not they're not all trick taking Italian card games. Tie card games. Yeah. Yeah.

So, but yeah. Um, thoughts on doing this today? I love this. I I play a lot of cribage. I know hearts. Never played rook. Never really played spades. So learning more is fun, but also it's I have played hundreds of games of specifically cribage against a variety of opponents, taught them, played for money, like everything.

I enjoy it every time. I have been more than doubled up on score or actually no, I've been doubled up on score in cribage. Scored in the 60s. Great game. And and here's what you need. Yeah. You don't need more. All right. 10 cards. That's it. You also meet people and they're like, especially, you know, for people like us, we we're in the hub, we play a lot of games.

They're like, "Oh, like what games do you know?" And I'm like, "Okay, I'm not going to talk about all the the weird other things that we play, but I'm like, well, like a deck of cards, like I play a lot of cribage." And every once in a while, you throw that line out there and someone's like, "I love cribage." And suddenly you made Now you're on the train and you're playing cribage with the dude next to you or the person next to you.

One of my wife's best friends, her and her husband both play and I've taught Annie obviously, but like we play so much and they're very good and very mean. So, like it's great. Every time we go to Christmas party every year, just get to place, go to the side, get our drinks, just try to kill each other.

It's the best. It's awesome. Yeah. Clearly, none of us are Midwesterners cuz we didn't play Uker today. Facts. Correct. Facts. Uh I have played I have played Uker. Great. Great. How many player? Yeah. Uh I mean there's Uker, there's Kesta. I mean there's a there's literally hundreds of games. Bridge, there's Yeah.

Uh, and that's just the ones that are common in this country, right? Yeah. You go to other countries and there's a ton of them, which is why the Italian thing even came up, right? But yeah, the Middle East has their own, China has like it's it's wild. It's just goes to show that like for thousands of years like this is just we it's a modern day knitting circle like trash talk encourage but it's all friendly and in good you know spirits and like today we could have the conversations over the top of it because we all know each other and we know the game and we know the game but like you play enough with someone you could just sit around and you just play the cards and occasionally something might make you go but it's like you're you're playing in the rhythms you're trying to find each other in there you don't really have to pay attention and you can still find out with it.
