This is our last stop! | KINGDOM DEATH WITH FEN #25
Hello everybody and welcome to what is going to be our final episode here of my blind run through Kingdom Death Fen. It has been a journey and it's had its ups and it's had its way downs, but it's been a very fun blind play and obviously I enjoyed Kingdom Death. I already bought the base game and then we recently just picked up an expansion.
So, it's a very fun time and I'm excited to rerun it uh with some new stuff on your table. >> Yeah, it should be fun. Um, and for for the viewers, if anyone doesn't remember, I basically said we'll we'll do the watcherite and we'll call it there because I I'd love for Justin to experience the like end part of the campaign in physical.
Um, so this this kind of gets things ahead. Also, this is the like the original ending for the campaign um before the new stuff came out >> and I think it just puts it to a nice length. It's nice to have a jumping off point. >> Yeah. >> Um >> we were just briefly discussing a set of the gear grids. Um basically the watcher has I think 22 toughness mean 21.
>> Um >> and so that's quite a big number. Generally, that means you need at least 11 strength total to be able to wound on something other than a 10. Um, you know, there are tools that can get you around that, but one of them requires a fair old heft of population, which is something we might be lacking.
>> Yeah, we never really had that. Yeah. >> Yeah, we had it for a little bit and then things just imploded. Triple lightning bolt had things to say. That was a that that's still one of my favorite moments. Just the chances of that just being like, "Oh, okay." You know, that's a that's a Kingdom death memory right there.
>> I'm so happy I got to experience it. It was terrible, but also it's it's I've never seen it before, and I don't think I'll ever see it again. >> Yeah. >> Um at all. Uh but yeah, so we are leveraging um Deadly >> Mhm. >> Um should hopefully uh give us some capability. >> Yeah. Uh >> and we have um >> yeah, >> we have a blue savior with us too.
And that's the that's the luck one, right? >> Um yeah, that is the it's the luck based. >> Okay. >> Which is over here. Yeah. Yeah, that's it. Yeah. Yeah. Um absolutely. Yeah. So, they've got their um their blue savior ability um but not their secret fighting art. Yeah, they do have plus Yeah, they have plus one blue affinity.
>> Yeah. >> Um well, it's basically it's these these six versus. So, if you'd like to read us our little introductory text and then set us up. So long ago, Raven and his beast searched the darkness, using their keen senses to find their prey. In the distance, they saw a blooming pillar of light surrounded by tasty morsels bustling in their tiny industry.
Licking their chops, they approached, but the beasts halted midstep. The wind carried a foul, menacing presence. Surely, the busy creatures were harmless. Yet the menacing warning persisted, felt in their very bones. Instinctive uh instinctively the beast turned away, seeking their meals elsewhere. All right.
>> Yeah. >> So, uh, did we set this guy up? No. I can right click, setup, showdown, level one. Whoa. >> Yep. >> Okay. And I see there is a lot of stuff, a lot of text here to read for rules. >> Yep. So, um, I'm going to just start with this over here. So, instinct absorb. Move the watcher directly to the center of the showdown board.
All survivors gain minus one strength token. Watcher heals 1d5 wounds. >> We want to avoid that. >> And then he has life. This is something I saw while I was sorting through my physical copy, but the watcher starts with 15 life life points. So, I assume this is just instead of a hit location deck, he has like HP.
>> Uh, no. Um, he still has a hit location deck. >> Oh, I guess like instead of doing his AI cards, is that the thing? >> Yeah. Yeah, you don't move the AI yet. >> That's what I meant to say. >> Hasn't deployed the card out, I think. All right. >> Okay. Uh, toughness. The watcher's tough is equal to this current lantern.
You're on the settlement sheet. If the settlement has records, the monster gains plus two toughness. I don't believe we have records. >> No, >> not that it really matters with our game plan. >> The the um what's his name? The hooded knight would have probably kicked it to pieces. >> Perfect. Uh, and then we have an audience, lantern, vortex, vapor of nothingness, retinue, and indomitable.
Uh, rein rules are up here. So, a retinue represents the settlement uniting to fight together. Each retinue occupies nine spaces as shown and is made up of nine unused survivor miniatures. A renu cannot attack monsters directly and instead lends its strength to other survivors. A renew is treated as a single large survivor and moves as a cohesive unit on the showdown board.
Maintain its configuration. Retinu have the following rules. Uh a retinue does not count as a threat and cannot directly be picked or selected as a target. Only monster collision and actions that apply to all survivors can affect a retinue. And a retributes, cannot be knocked down, suffer knockback or gain status cards for the purpose of uh survivor collision.
Treat retinues as impassible terrain. Killing a retinue. When a renew suffers damage including brain damage or collision with a monster roll 1d10 on a result of four plus it's destroyed. Uh reneu also is destroyed when a monster ends movement on it space it occupies or when the survivor controlling the retinue dies.
Re is destroyed. Remove from the showdown board. The settlement suffers minus four population. This loss cannot kill the other survivors currently in the showdown. Survivor with a ret status card can perform the following actions. Summon a retinue. Once per act, a survivor without a revenue may place a retinue in an unoccupied space along any board edge and move it up to five spaces.
March. At the start of their act, survivor with renew gains an additional movement that can only be spent to move their retinue up to five spaces. Double march. Once per round, anytime survivor can dash, they may spend one survival to dash their retinue up to five spaces in addition to their own dash survival action.
And a coordinated attack when a survivor attacks at plus six strength the wound attempt when for each. Ah, I see. This is what you're saying. and how with you have a lot of people you can coordinate. I see that. Okay. All right. Uh then we have the other cards. Terrified survivors spectate in silence.
Embolden. If there are less than four non-written survivors on the showdown board, a survivor from the settlement may depart and enter the showdown. Place them in an unoccupied space along any board edge. Oh. Uh, the start of each monster turn, all survivors in the void nexus suffer bash. Okay. Perform a basic action.
Vapor of nothingness. Whenever a watcher collides with a survivor, the blood flow to their brain stutters for a moment. They suffer one brain damage and one damage to the head that ignores armor points. And then we have the retine, which we I've all just read. Uh, so was the watcher like living in the lantern?
Is that like what this thing is? He was like above the Yeah. So, um, what it is, I'm going to give you like a little quick bit of the the law as we understand it. Um, watchers have a really long life cycle where they exist for a very long time like fed by energy that they've taken from their victims.
>> Mhm. Um, and then when they get hungry, they'll bury themselves in the ground of the plane of stone faces and eventually they get pushed up forming this like cyst of the landscape, which is what the lantern horde is. It's surrounded by lanterns and they're like inside in a cocoon. >> Okay. >> And then they they project like an energy that keeps a lot of the hostile hostile things away.
>> Yeah. So, we saw in the intro here. Yeah. >> As you read in the intro. Uh but survivors are a bit too like new and dumb and inexperienced to understand really what's going on. So they're like, "Hey, there's no monsters here. This looks safe." >> Yeah. >> And then the um the watcher gradually seeds ideas to them, which you can see if you look over at the um the settlement uh the lantern horde.
>> This is the place where all of the technologies come from. >> Yeah. >> So we can't innovate without going to the lantern horde. We can't even start building these. We get our ideas from monsters. Even the like quarry locations is the ideas from the monsters. So this has been like the source of knowledge for the settlement.
>> Uh influencing >> um kind of like through dreams. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> You know, how the saviors are disappear into a dream and come back. There's a fair amount of that involved. >> Uh and yeah, eventually they as the settlement grows, as time passes, the lanterns gradually fade away. And once enough of them have gone, the watcher is like close to waking and unless it gets woken up early, it'll wake up and its ideal thing is it just feeds on all of the settlement and then goes off and does it merry thing for a while before repeating the cycle.
>> Nice. Okay. Yeah. So he's he wakes up hungry. He wakes up hungry. >> Yeah. Yeah. He basically, you know, arrives, seeds seeds the ideas into the survivors and then feeds on on whatever >> basically like builds his own his builds his own meal event like essentially makes it even >> gets all supports it so they grow and get better and then he's like I'm hungry.
Okay. >> Yeah. >> Is he doing it because he do they do it consciously or is it just like part of their hibernation? >> We we don't know. Okay. >> Um I think >> left to interpretation. >> Yeah, it's left to interpretation. There's a lot we don't know about the Watchers. We're possibly going to find out more in the future.
My opinion is, yeah, it's like >> you'll start to see there's a creature they kind of represent from our world. And, you know, I kind I I'm of the opinion that it is like a honey trap. >> It is intentional that they >> maybe not intentional that they create the safe space. that's just kind of part of their aura >> and life cycle.
But I think like they do seed ideas into the survivors um knowing that they'll grow and produce memories and technology and things, everything that a growing watcher wants and needs. >> Nice. >> And then I I mean I imagine this is something that we'll piece together more as we play more. But then all these other things like the Kingsmen and like all these other things is these are >> are are they they're not really human, are they?
or are they like some sort of evolution that went further? Is that something that we'll figure out more? I'm just now curious seeing all this kind of evolve >> you if we'd have been in a better position, you'd have actually seen the birth of Kingsman in this camp. >> Okay, cool. All right, good to know.
>> Yeah. So, I'll leave that at that. Um, the hand. Uh, if we have the opportunity to play a different campaign, you'll get to see a bit more about the hand. Yeah. And, >> um, the the king. >> Yeah. >> As well. >> Faction, Kingsman Hand and the King. That's like >> a faction that's >> uh checking. I say they inspecting settlements to see if they're suitable for feeding from.
Again, like most cases, if you wonder what a monster's doing, it's probably taking advantage of the survivors as a way to eat at um >> or use them as a resource in some. >> Makes sense. Makes sense. >> Yeah. Um and and the butcher is, you know, everything you need to know about the butcher. >> Yeah.
He's a serial killer. >> Yeah. Exa Exactly. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Yeah. Um so, yeah, let's that that's enough of a little law wble on it. Um, there's more I could talk about, but that would be to do with the boss that comes after this one. >> It's And and honestly, I like figuring it out as we go. This is a fun little revelation to piece together here.
Um, which I think >> see I think you should be able to figure out fairly quickly what kind of real life thing has inspired this this creature as we as we play. Um, all I'm going to say is if we're doing well, this will probably be quite a long fight. >> Yeah. Uh and if we are um if we're not doing well uh >> it's going to be not that.
Yeah. >> Yeah. Um I am not entirely sure how to represent this life. >> Um >> um okay. >> Yeah. >> Cuz can you cuz we can't set >> we can set face. >> We can Yeah, we can set Yeah, we can set face. Let me just Can you just just want to Oh, hey. My cursor is over over it. Um, I'm going have to take these two.

>> Yeah. >> In fact, I'm gonna >> maybe we make the um this one the the ones the f the red cuz it probably won't get picked up as much. >> And if we don't do good, it's probably I imagine going to be not maybe as short as that Phoenix fight we did in the last episode. That was a scrub crush. >> Um I don't know what to say about that when it was just a nightmare like having a peck in that situation. >> Yeah. >> Yep. Okay. Uh well uh so we've got one more thing to discuss which is >> as you you've seen the revenue rules.
Yeah. >> Um, now if we use the retinues, >> Yeah. >> we've got the weirdness of we only have two survivors in reserve. >> Yeah. >> And technically we can bring out like four retinues. And this is one of the weird wonky bits of it. >> Yeah. >> Um, but if we lose a single retinue, then we lose both of our backup survivors.
Gotcha. >> I'm kind of of the opinion that maybe we just don't use the retinue rules because it doesn't >> like a retinue would represent like four survivors and >> we can just >> Yeah, we can instead just make sure we make use of the audience >> and we can embolden these last two on and they can grab the gear grids of whoever dies.
So, we've got six survivors >> to get this done. >> Perfect. >> That's what I'm thinking. >> Sounds fun. Sounds I mean, the really gamey way to do it would be you'd run out the four survivors. When two die, you get the other two on and then you generate four retinues. And I don't know where these guys have come from, then it's uh >> Oh, yeah, I guess.
Yeah. So, there's a little bit of dissonance there, like Yeah. mechanical and flavor dissonance. So, yeah, we'll let's just ignore it. Let's There's going to be a lot going on. We could just ignore that for this one. >> Yeah. Okay, cool. So, I'll just put the red new cards there. This is here in case we need it.
Okay. >> I also uh never read this one, but I've seen this one. It's just they they just stand if they're uh uh if they're knocked down after they attack or we attack them. >> Yes, that's pretty much how it's uh how it's working. And we've got this here to remind us we've got a once per showdown, we can pull an AI card on top that we're like, that's not too bad.

Um, we don't have to have the survivors in the particular ones, but I think with these guys, they're all kind of jack of all trades really. Oh my god." >> Yes. Yeah. Um, I we're just going to get in and start wailing. Um, I'm just going to I'm just looking to grab >> uh secret fighting arts cuz I may as well just get this monster claw style. >> Oh yeah, sure. Good call. >> Have it ready. But yeah, I I think pretty much um we definitely want to you definitely want to stick our leather armor to it as much as possible.

It's possible, but I wanted to remind myself that we got savage on these fists cuz that might be a thing I do instead of this.
Depends on the positioning. Okay. Uh, see, so rats will. So, I guess the slamming doesn't really make a big difference for you. I think I want to alternate these rawhide guys so there's one of them who doesn't get bashed every turn. >> Yep, seems fair. >> We're going to be leaning on the rawhide encourage hopeful survival returns quite a bit.

We hit the void membrane. >> If they can't, they die instantly. Uh hypnotic undilations roll over the watcher surface.
Turn the watcher face then move the monster three space backwards and cancel all hits. Now out of range. Okay. >> Yeah. So basically I need I think the second attack the second card's going to get cancelled. >> Yeah. >> Um cuz I can't bypass that reflect here. Uh so I need a 10 cuz this is can't be critted.

I think honestly I mean I think we go for the the the void shroud because we can't actually wound this guy unless it's critical. So we run that one. >> Yeah. So we have uh eight I think because it's I have deadly on the sword and then plus one >> buck 10 normally nine eight. >> Yeah. Nope. But no no no effect.
And now we'll go to this one. Nah. So bash and knock back 10. And oh no one's taking damage yet. So we're going to count that as a win. Yeah. Okay, I'll uh moving to the blind spot and >> Yeah, >> cuz you're out of >> I'm in the blind spot. I'm going to go for the fist and tooth attack. >> Oh, hell yeah.

So, void folds first. I'm in the same situation of needing an 8, 9, 10. I have a lucky charm and it's >> good luck. >> Uh, nope, that's a two. Okay, so I get a minus one strength token. I'll grab that in a second. And the watcher faces. Oh, okay. Uh, furthest board edge for move forward. It's going to run straight through.
>> Yeah. >> Atlas Milan. Yeah, I could dash, but >> what's this guy? >> Don't see the point. Um, it's unlimited. >> Oh, okay. Perfect. Woo. >> Like the speed of light. >> So then there's a collision, right? >> Uh, yes. I get the other effects of the collision. >> So they suffer one brain damage, one damage to head that ignores armor points.
A vapor of nothingness. >> Okay. So, that's a light to the brain. And >> jellyfish. >> What do you think? >> It looks like it in this art. >> Uh, yeah. Uh we is just rolling our four dice hitting on I think three plus no four pluses I think because we have one evasion from >> yeah from this yeah and then one yeah four pluses >> okay um let's see if I can get another seven and three nines >> pretty good >> three sixes y >> yeah okay 668 uh yeah uh wow okay Um, I'll be doing the same thing the other time.
>> Um, and keep the survival and then that is going to be we're going to be knocked down. >> Yeah. >> For definite and uh I lose some body, waste, and hands. >> I'm going to just say I'm excited to uh get to a point where maybe the survivors get like competitive with this fight because it does seem like we have like a big power discrepancy.
I understand this fight isn't supposed to be easy, but I imagine with a better run, you actually have like options that we're currently missing. Uh yeah, well, we don't have the blacksmith location open. And one of the silver bullets, which is the hooded stranger, decided in we didn't get the the proper hooded stranger.
We got some imposter who murdered me, came here to kill our guys. >> That we did not we we had a we had a hooded homicidalist. Yeah. >> Incredible. Um, right. I'm I'm still alive, though. >> Yeah. Oh, yeah. Not dead. >> Still alive. Got three survival. It didn't steal my minus one strength token, which I'm not using anyway.
>> Yeah. >> Uh, right. >> All right. Well, Wrath gets to stand up cuz they were knocked down last survivor phase. One, two, three, four, five. Dash. One, two, three, four. Yeah, I can get in with uh Aithoth. do some more whacking. >> Um, do you want me to go first with that? >> I think so. Just in case like I don't Yeah, it is very movie.
Um, I'm terribly sorry, uh, Whipper Will, but I mean, if the watcher runs you down, honestly, it's for all of the times you annoyed me on the campus. >> Yeah, >> which is many. >> Yeah, >> I I love that. >> Listen, this is called karma. Whipperwills. Look it up. >> Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So, uh I'm going to go I got my fist and no whipple fist and so I got my scraps sword.
>> Nice. >> Hitting on fours. Uh one hit. >> Nice. >> Uh in the void ganglia. Okay. So, this is another not critable one. This is the difficult part of uh of fighting this. I'll get a 10. 10 does it. Otherwise, we're having a um a fun time. >> Ooh. Halfway there. At least we're improving. >> Yeah. Yeah.
All right. So, that's a failure. Uh, right. So, I Small explosions of lightly flicker over the watcher's surface, setting off violent seizures in the attacker's brain. I'm going to gain one random disorder. Oh, Raolic. Amazing. >> That's pretty good. >> I'll take it. That is actually pretty good. I might be taking a severe injury here.
It's perfectly possible. Can't budge what's coming. Uh, right. So, can we just We go. I'll take it. It's technically positive. >> Yep. >> Uh right. And now I have to beat beat myself up. The settlement is lost. Lost settlement. Start a new campaign by taking a settlement record sheet and filling in a box under the lost settlement section. Apply all milestone bonuses earned to your new campaign and begin the first story. For every successful settlement you lost, you may fill in a box and continue to earn a new milestone bonuses for your future campaigns.

But I think the important thing is to show you can get to the watcher in any campaign as long as you keep people alive. >> Yep. >> You might not be able to win, but you you can get there. I don't think there's, >> you know, any as long as you can manage population. >> Yeah. >> You can you can always get to at least the first nonpopulation zero.
And and I mean a big thing I learned pretty quickly in Kingdom Death, like and I when I mean quickly, I mean I learned it and when you and I did our first prologue tester together that wasn't even recorded and like three people died where I was like this is a game where it's about like the journey and not so much like the perfect like scenario.
The game is going to feel swingy. It's going to feel unfair at times, but the pendulum in theory with good play and more knowledge will swing more in favor to you, but it'll still just due to the way that RNG works swing the other way as well. >> Yeah, absolutely. Um, indeed. So, as it's been a a learning experience and also for me, it's been the first time this year I've replayed People of the Lantern cuz, as I said, I've been doing other other campaigns and other games.
So, it's been nice to come back here. I always forget what a delight the Watcher is. It's a It's one of my favorite designed like core finale type bosses. >> It seemed very good. It seemed like I I liked like everything I saw for it. >> Yeah, there's there's some of the designs where you're like, "Oh, this shows a little bit of roughness of their newness." Uh, and some of them you just look and go, "This is this is this is perfect.
This is this cannot be bettered." And I think this is one of them. This is such a thematic and well put together thing. Yeah, for sure. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. So, uh, next time we'll be on my table >> and we will be doing a full campaign setup with all of the choices. So, we'll be making decisions and we'll be talking about uh the pluses and minuses and benefits of each particular monster.
>> Uh, and that should be a lot of fun. It's my favorite things is setting up the a campaign. >> Yeah, >> very enjoyable. And we'll probably record that too for people for context as well. Yeah. So >> I definitely think we we should we will record it for for watching because I think it's it's interesting.
It's a question I quite often get is like how do you set up a campaign? And I've done a full sort of walk through my thoughts on each of the different monsters, but I've I don't think I've ever really properly sat down and said, "Okay, well, if you're setting up a campaign with first generation of stuff, these are the things you want to consider and think about." So it should be enjoyable.
Um, I'm making two hard decisions like automatically picking two of the monsters. >> Um, you One of them is to replace the hand. >> Okay. Yeah, because we've already seen that. We know that guy's thing. >> Yep. Um, and then the other one is the alternate prologue monster. >> There's only two monsters in on the simulator that have a prologue fight.
So, we're going to have the alternate one instead of the White Line, but you'll get to pick everything else. Um, and we'll still do People of the Lantern again and try and try and beat the Watcher and get through to the stuff afterwards, which should be >> a lot of fun. And also hopefully I'm going to try and be a bit more dialed in.
Um, it's late here and I it I do get very tired. >> Oh, no. I I I get that completely. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. We have the I have the privilege of it only being like noon my time and we have a >> Yeah. >> quite a bit of time between this. hopefully like we'll catch more of the things um and get better because it's it's different for me playing and recording and then talking with you.

Um I I had a lot of fun and honestly that that went a lot longer for a fight than I expected it to. I really thought Stolen Dreams was going to pop up a lot earlier.

Well, before we before we wrap up, was there any sort of like things you really uh liked as we're going through like any moments of of choices and decisions made that you >> uh So, yeah, for me it's uh it's actually I think less about the um the decisions for Kingdom Death that really work for me, but the thing that really makes me love this game is the reactive AI, the react the hit location deck.
reactive behaviors. >> Yeah, this was the thing that made me be like, "Oh, this game is cool when like every hit location had a different sort of effect and they were all like different parts of the monster." >> Um, but I am excited to look at more build variety because there was like the start like I I think like you the uh investigator that I was sad the most that died was Skids cuz I think we had a really cool build going with him.
>> Yeah. >> And then obviously two Silus. As you said, those deaths were great like stories in like Valentino's thing, right? Like those are all awesome stuff. I'm just hoping for the next one we don't get a plague early on. That's my my only hope. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. All right. Well, um that's great.
Uh yeah, we will have more build variety in the next campaign and we'll even be able to curate a little bit which weapons we want to experiment and journey with. Um, and uh we I'm gonna have a bit of a firmer hand on the on this on the tiller on the steering just just in the early stages of the campaign.

And what we could do too is uh you can like give let me choose and then you can be like this is what you should choose then we'll do that one cuz then I can still like puzzle through and try to solve. But then you can like be a guiding hand and I don't mind that because now I have a bit more >> experience with this.
I I think there's only a few like specific points where I I do want to firmly be like we do this, we do this. Um on the whole though, it it's I I'm very happy like you picked up on stuff very quickly. Um I I still don't know if it was really uh bad luck that nailed this so much. I know that, you know, I can think of a couple of decision points where a survivor died that shouldn't have.
Um but on the whole I don't know what we're supposed to do in some of some of the hunts really >> Yeah. >> crushed us. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> No, I feel like uh if if we weren't maybe not like we weren't defeated by decisions, but like every decision cut a little bit off >> and like like the like and then eventually the the weight of that coupled with the RNG kind of just like threw us to a point where we couldn't really recuperate from.
