Description

In the depths of an ancient crypt, an adventurer must brave the shadows with only a flickering lantern to light the way. Three elusive soul crystals must be forged by piecing together fragments from the spirits of defeated foes, and only by doing so can the evil lurking below be summoned and vanquished. Along the way, deadly enemies guard the forgotten treasures of the dungeon. Will you conquer the darkness and emerge victorious, or become lost forever in the crypt's eternal night?

Crypt Crawler is a solo mint tin dungeon crawler where you, an adventurer, explore a dark dungeon with only your lantern to light the way. Battle enemies, collect soul fragments, and combine them at soul shrines to form soul crystals. Once you’ve crafted three, a powerful boss emerges, challenging you for victory. Along the way, gather weapons, armor, and loot, while gaining experience to unlock new skills. Beware—if your lantern goes out, fear grows in the dark. If your health reaches zero, poison overwhelms you, or fear consumes you, the dungeon claims your soul.

Pros
  • Engaging loot system with meaningful gear upgrades
  • Strong thematic consistency in dungeon-crawl gameplay
  • Quest system adds variety and motivation to explore
  • Distinct classes and ancestries with upgrade paths
  • Expansion adds significant variety and replay potential
Cons
  • Play mat is pricey and not strictly necessary
  • Base rules are not included in the box; rulebook must be printed or PDF used
  • Packaging with two tins can be awkward; not everything fits in a single box
  • Some players may find the price point high for a print-on-demand product
Thematic elements

  • Fantasy dungeon crawl across a multi-level dungeon (levels 1-5) with exploration and looting.
  • Procedural, encounter-driven with modular cards and events; loot and quest twists drive the narrative.

Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • Boss Battler — Boss fights occur after collecting fragments; bosses scale with encounters and loot.
  • Boss mechanics — Boss fights occur after collecting fragments; bosses scale with encounters and loot.
  • Character progression — Characters have ancestries and classes (double-sided); experience unlocks skills and starting gear evolves with gear options.
  • combat resolution — To hit uses a D6 roll plus bonuses to meet or exceed the target's toughness; higher speed determines attack order.
  • Encounter/quest/shop cards — Rooms and events are determined by encounter cards; quest cards can reward talismans; shops allow purchasing potions, oil, gem fragments.
  • Fear and fear threshold — Fear damage accumulates as you traverse the dungeon; reaching the threshold can end the game.
  • Food mechanics — Food restores HP or stamina; food spoils per level requiring stock management.
  • Gem fragments and soul shrine — Collect fragments to summon a boss via soul shrines; three fragments form a gem to fight a boss.
  • Lantern/darkness mechanic — A lantern track tracks oil; running out of oil makes rooms dark and enemies stronger.
  • Loot and equipment — Loot cards come in rarity (green/common, yellow/uncommon, red/rare) with double-sided items that modify stats and grants gear.
  • Stamina resource — Stamina is spent to deal additional damage or to trigger active skills.

Quotes (from this video)
  • I really like this game.
  • The expansion just adds a whole bunch of variety, and you can flip that over and that becomes a magical talisman that adds a bonus to your character for the rest of the game.
  • Overall, Crypt Crawler is really cool.
  • I would actually like to see both of these packaged together in one of those smaller Gamecrafter cardboard boxes.
  • The base game does not come with the rules.
