Pros
  • Inspired a generation of digital game designers.
  • Influential in shaping quantitative game mechanics.
  • Allows for exploration of identity and fantasy.
  • Facilitates conversations about societal values and biases through its mechanics.
  • Encouraged critical examination of game design and its cultural implications.
Cons
  • Incorporated problematic stereotypes related to gender and race.
  • Early editions contained offensive tables like the 'harlot table'.
  • The quantitative approach can reduce complex human attributes to numbers, potentially reinforcing stereotypes.
  • Some early fan modifications and official content exhibited racial insensitivity (e.g., 'Oriental Adventures').
  • The reliance on numbers can sometimes obscure the interpretive aspects of game design.
Thematic elements
  • The influence of Dungeons and Dragons on digital game design and culture, focusing on its quantitative aspects.
Comparison games
  • Magic the Gathering
  • Rogue
  • Elder Scrolls
  • Skyrim
Mechanics (from transcript analysis)
  • alignment system — A 3x3 grid mapping law/chaos and good/evil, derived from various spiritualities and used to categorize monsters and characters.
  • Character statistics — The six main statistics (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma) and how they are interpreted through rules and formulas to reconcile actions in the game.
  • Dice Rolling — Used to resolve actions, with the result modified by ability scores and used to reconcile combat and interactions.
  • Dungeon crawling — The concept of exploring dungeons, traced back to modifications of wargames and the 'Escape from Castle Blackmore' modification.
  • Role-playing — Players embody characters, though the book focuses less on this aspect and more on the quantitative systems.

Quotes (from this video)
  • This is one of those like it's a it's got a uncorrected page proof warning in the front and like the table of contents isn't filled in. It's great.
  • So, um, um, uh, if you're a Magic the Gathering player, you will be familiar with the phrase last in first out.
  • And so, um, so I, you know, in this book I argue that I think that there is this uh this through thread of Cold War anxieties that kind of paradoxically take us into the dungeon.
  • I think within kind of the the folks who look at the history of these things, that's probably the first dungeon crawl.
  • So, um, so my uh my mentor when I was at um a grad student um uh was a woman named Maria Delbelloo and um she is a book historian.
  • And so going into the archive is very much like that. There's a mo it's kind of a magical moment.
  • And so um, so I, you know, in this book I argue that I think that there is this uh this through thread of Cold War anxieties that kind of paradoxically take us into the dungeon.
  • The premise of this book is that Dungeons and Dragons was one of the very most impactful games that's ever been made.
  • Um, so the first thing is I I like that that sense of ornament. I think that um there's some kind of aesthetic I don't want to use the word beauty, but I think there's some sort of aesthetic quality that's important there.
  • And so, um, uh, this is uh this is a an interesting um it's an interesting game in so far as it uh it it does a lot of things that are really amazing um and progressive in the community.
  • But um but yeah, uh yeah, the book goes into race a little. Um I want to talk about orientalism.
  • Now, one thing I'll say just in defense of the fan community u, because I think it's also important that to not create an anacronistic sense of history here.
  • And so I think um the more that information is free, the more people um take the archives that they have um donate them to public institutions.
  • So, I think the strategy that's being used right now is one of trying to um promote um uh systems that do not reduce um people and bodies to numbers because uh like as I'm critiquing in this book, uh these systems can promote stereotypes and those stereotypes are really problematic and hurtful.
  • And so it's a really fascinating artifact of design. Um and one where I feel like you can really kind of act watch Gary Gyax in real time working through um his thoughts on religion but also on other religions and trying to reconcile them all into one kind of uh design artifact that that would serve the game.

  • I've been like loving it which is a game uh I think it's published by Hobby Japan called Builders high it's a kind of weird mix of engine building and shedding it's a card game right where you are building laying down buildings um you've got to fulfill some kind of there'll be some City contracts out right uh you're You're Building buildings but you've also got to get rid of everything in your hand and there's also you some cards have got money on and some of them are buildings and the buildings once you've built them do stuff have special powers so you're slowly building an economic engine the wrinkle in the game is that you can only spend exact amounts of money so if you get because you're it's you're basically public you're doing stuff for the city your public industry so you've got to um use up every bit of money in your contract you can't have money left over that doesn't go anywhere so um it's a really interesting game of think actually quite a lot of spending is harder than it first looks it's also a race because there's this amazing point you can't you can't end the game until you've claimed one of the contracts by building a set number of buildings and they're they're different targets right and and then the game and then what you're doing immediately there's this beautiful art where it immediately turns and you are having to shed your hand so suddenly everything you've been doing in the game up to then get money get buildings build this thing you now don't care about and you're just trying to spend everything in your hand and empty your hand onto the table so there's this lovely Arc and this lovely turn and for me the artwork is never going to be hung in the Lou um it's you know the Box looks nice but for me it just does something that um a lot of other games it just doesn't feel like anything else in my collection

Quotes (from this video)
  • Why is keeping rules simple better?
  • There's a lot of people that have the same belief as I do about keeping your rules simple. Uh and which allows things to be more fun.
  • It just makes it more convoluted and less fun.
  • When you have less rules and you have less worry about how you're going to look things up and the game master has less worry about how am I going to have a a situation that is going to be challenging for everybody in this moment...
  • The game master gets to relax and and and and enjoy the creation that they're doing. And the players get to also relax and enjoy themselves while they play.
  • I feel like that complexity that you get and that enjoyment you get comes at a loss of playability.
  • I want to be able to sit down and and go and not have like rules problems and questions and issues.
  • Who cares? It works as written. We'll fix it later.
  • Strip down those rules. You'll have more fun.

  • So, it's using a lot of like core basic math skills that I think are great for kids to learn, but I also think they're great for adults to continue to do a little bit.
  • I think it's good for our minds to try to go through that math and not always pull out our calculators.
  • One of the ways I think this game sneakily teaches geography is that you have to say the names of the cities a lot.
  • Wingspan was just such a beautifully done in in teaching about birds without a very sneakily.
  • Wingspan is really good at helping us notice the world that has always been around us but see it in a new way or see it more clearly.
  • So, Let's Go to Japan does a fantastic job of teaching about a specific country's geography and culture.
  • I can see it used in great ways for language arts but also for second language learning.
  • And, whenever the design of the card really ties the theme of that of of the card into like how tall of a tree you can make or how much soil you can put on it or the habitat that it belongs in, that helps it like that kind of anchors it in my memory a little bit more than than otherwise would happen.
  • The combination of math and um and flora and fauna and just my love of the game is what what made me pick it as not my number one.
