Quotes (from this video)
  • In Opera Magna, the central part of the game consists of the three city boards.
  • Each player's turn begins with the merchant step during which we move our merchant to the different areas on the city boards.
  • Activating a city means paying a cost according to all the visible icons on the trade cards in the cost area.
  • All of these refined resources will be needed to construct buildings.
  • The first building card tracked underneath the player board immediately unlock the corresponding consequences of the left side of the board or a special effect on the right side.
  • All of the ones gained during a turn must be spent during the same turn.
  • The trade cards on the market board also determine when the game ends.

Pros
  • Quick and snappy playtime (around an hour to an hour and 20 minutes).
  • Glorious market mechanics that are interesting and shift costs and needs.
  • Players can manipulate the market to their advantage, potentially hitting desired actions every turn.
  • Elegance in the cube-pushing mechanics.
  • Excitement in player counts where desired components might be gone by the time it's your turn again.
  • Freedom to choose which side of the player board to slot cards on, offering discounts or resource gains.
  • Clever end-game trigger when cards run out, with cards becoming more powerful but also more expensive.
  • Clever certificate system that requires building up certain resources to send out, but can also be spent as resources.
  • Players are rarely stuck unable to do anything due to resource scarcity.
  • Hard choices between slotting cards for discounts or for powerful in-game scoring abilities.
  • Satisfying end-game scoring with points from buildings and the main board.
Cons
  • The game is dry.
  • Requires a booklet for iconography as there are many icons and complex building effects.
  • Potential for analysis paralysis (AP), especially towards the end of the game.
  • Feels like the game ends just as the player's engine is coming online, not allowing for extended engine exploitation.
Thematic elements
  • Building a cathedral

Quotes (from this video)
  • As a reminder, if you have not watched one of these before, the way I pick the top five games of each month is what games did I sit down to play the most times. Not necessarily number of plays because a 15-minute game does not count the same as a 3-hour game.
  • But, a very cool tower defense, crisis managy-style game with some work placement going on, bag building, very cool stuff.
  • It just has that kind of brain burn. I really like it. I actually went out and got some little metal gears things, so I can bling out my copy cuz I like it that much. Super clever game.
  • And it does some cool stuff, I think, with initiative. I really like the way the initiative works. I like the way the AI works. All very very clever stuff, and I'm looking forward to getting back to it.
  • All it is All that game is is it is deck management. It's deck building really, but >> [sighs] >> you're just building the deck cuz you're just building this deck and hoping stuff comes out. And that's it. And it doesn't sound satisfying when I say that, but what a wonderful light quick game.
  • It does some really cool stuff with the way you're placing your workers out, and you have to put a little more and you can put more workers out, which means you're going to get first crack at something, or fewer workers out, and maybe you'll get other stuff later. But if you're the only person there, you might get a little You might be able to do the action four times, and you're spending your points to do the things, and it's just a really clean, tight bag builder is what it is, but man, really, really good.
  • It's kind of a mix of Mysterium and Betrayal at House on the Hill.
  • And the cool thing about it is you pick an action tile, but you don't know what it's going to do to you because there's something else on the back. And so, I'm really curious how that plays.
