And I started thinking a a bit about, you know, just just looking at some different ideas to do different things. And and one of the things that popped up was was five timeless games I will still play in my 80s, which I'm not horribly far from. And I always wondered, I go, you know, will I still be playing games when I'm in my 80s? and and will I have my faculties about me to be able to do such and you always hope that you do but I started looking around here as I looked around I started I I was it was so easy to eliminate a lot of things because of the complexity I mean do do I do I think I I'll I'll be playing Warhammer Quest or League of Dungeoners or um uh Dungeon Universalis which are very great games, but they take up a a lot of room, a lot of time. And as you slow and as you age and as as you know, just you

know, imagine years from now, you're slowing down, you know, your hands aren't as steady as they used to be. You're not you're not the the the same person and your attention span kind of goes, you know, with your memory as well. I I found it that you know from from my 40s when I used to play things so complex because I you know more complex the better. Then I find that here in my in my mid60s that I'm I'm kind of like h you know something I just want to play something a lot simpler something just to get to the table quickly and get and I can imagine you know another 15 years from now you know am I going to be playing Pacific War? No. Am I going to be playing Europa? No.

But can I see myself playing car carrier strike? Possibly. Can I see myself playing Oh, boy. Cherier, sure. It's not that hard. Uh, Thunder Alley, things like that of nature. Stellar Horizon 2 and Stella Horizon, which are very complex games. I don't think so. But when I really started whittling away and started thinking about it, I came up with five timeless games that I really felt that would fit this particular type of environment. And the games I came up with is Blood Bowl.

Okay? And and and these aren't in any order. And I'm going to tell you why. Blood Bowl, even though it's a little complex, it's like chess. And just like fine wine, as you age, sometimes that slower paced game where you can just take your time and plan out your moves and and you know, spend half a day sitting in your easy chair with your Blood Bowl [snorts] pitch in front of you, making those moves. And and and and it has a chess feel to it. And I felt that that would be one game I would be able to to to play. Now, do I think I as much as I love dodge and crawls, I'd be able to to sustain something like that?

And then I started thinking, well, not really. I would want to do things that that have a complexity, but yet are something that I would enjoy. So, we've already got Blood Bowl on the list. And then I started thinking of things that that were that were pretty easy to set up and play yet have a little complexity to it. And I started thinking about Space Empires. I thought Space Empires very easy to set up. My problem is is that when I get older, will I be able to see the chits as well? H maybe not. But I I I still felt that that was a game that just had enough to kind of push me a little bit and yet not push too hard. The third game I came up with was Dungeon Quest. If I had to put a dungeon crawler in there, I always felt dungeon dungeon quest would be easy because it's just a big old bag full of chits and you're pulling them out and having [clears throat] to react and you could either roll the dice or do the the the rock paper scissors thing. And I thought that would be a good game that as I got older would be timeless and would hold its weight. So, so far we've got Blood Bowl, we've got Space Empires,

and I'm doing this as as I'm sitting here talking to you, and Dungeon Quest. If I had to add a war game, I would keep it specifically very, very simple and something that wouldn't have a lot of depth to it, but something I could sit with a grandson that wouldn't take hours upon hours. And I thought about tactics too. And I felt that that as as old as that game is and as easy as that game is, as I mature or wither as as I I would possibly say, that would be the one game that I think I would be able to kind of withstand and kind of keep within that that that framework that I would be able to still have that feel, you know, red versus blue, you know, it's not World War II, it's not Barcelona, you uh you know and you know it's not a ton of different fight scenarios DDay or anything like that but I felt that that was a game that would really kind of hang in there. I toyed with Hero Quest, but I just felt that there was just too much to it, especially to play by myself possibly or [clears throat] or with another, you know, even though it's extremely simple.

I wonder if I would have the taste for it the way I do now. And I just don't foresee that. So then I came to what I would consider probably the last game that I think would be a lot of fun. And it isn't. It's kind of a bigger game, but not a ton of setup. And yet I think I would still get that fantasy drive that I really enjoy and I would really be able to put that out there. And that was Defenders of the Realm uh by Richard Longest, the brilliant genius that he is. I just felt that it was such a game that when you turn a card and you just add the the certain colors in certain spots and everything closing in on you and and just having your four heroes trying to repel in a tower defense type of thing that it would be fun yet give a complexity that wouldn't be overwhelming for somebody of that age group.

And I felt those five games as, you know, as I sat here and I looked around this room as to what I have and what I don't have and and really thought that those would be the ones that I think I would still be playing in my 80s. So it' be Defenders of the Realm if maybe that new edition be even better when it comes out. Dungeon Quest, Tactics 2, Blood Bowl, and of course, Space Empires. And those are five timeless games. And I really feel that as I get older, I don't think the miniatures would be a big factor. I don't think bigger games would would be for someone of my age group as as my mind starts to kind of become pudding, you know, because it does happen to us all. And as I slow down and as life starts to creep in there and you're around that that corner of of the race and you're almost at the finish line, those were the games that I think I could sustain and still see myself playing in my 80s. So, a little kind of different video, but I hope you enjoy it. And until next time, it's your old pal Rob. We'll see you soon, everybody.
