Where There's A Wilz, There's a Play Sep 1, 2026
Transcript 24:05

Welcome to where there's a wheels,

there's a play.

I'm Ian, your makey casual gamer.

I'm Stacy. I'm your non-gamer gamer.

And it's September already.

Before we know it, the end of the year will be

I'm not sure how it's September already. I like Yeah, even August went by really fast.

I'm still waiting for Valentine's Day to show up this year.

Yeah. Yeah. So, it's September. It's a new month, which means it's time for a new wall. Um, and this month because it is my busiest month of the year with school back in session and coaching in full swing and 12-hour days. This month we like to try and do things that are a little quicker, easier to get to the table. And as you can tell behind us, this month is all about Buttonshy as we continue our year of kind of highlighting some of our favorite publishers. Um, Buttonshy is one that I have been big into for several years now. I think my Buttonshy collection now is right around 25 games with several expansion collections. You can see I have Rove with both expansion collections for Rove because it is one of my favorite games. Um it is not going on the wall, but there is another one that is that you will see. Um and

there's a couple that they'll see.

Yeah. Well, no, another one related to it. Um spoiler. Um, and Stacy's recently got into some uh I think one of her and we'll talk about it when she gets into it with uh she's got a few games that she plays that we play together. Um

like a huge buttonshy player because I'm it's a lot of solo games and two um and two-player only games, but I don't do solo games. Um I tend to cheat too much. I guess I don't trust myself.

So I some of these are some of these are the two players.

Some of these are one to four or

Okay.

So maybe Okay. All right.

But the ones that I like are two players as well.

Yep. All right. So, we are going to get into this. Uh we have 10 total games that we're going to put on our shelf in our den that we're going to make sure we get played and I'm sure I'll get some of these played and maybe Stacy will play some of them with me. Who knows? All right. So, I'm gonna start. Um I'm gonna go because I got six and Stacy's got four. So, we're gonna just go back and forth giving two each. So, my first one is a newer one. I don't It's not their newest one, but it is fairly new. Um, and this is from Dustin Dobson and Milan Zipkovic. And this is Adventurous. Um, Adventurous is a game where you are can kind of show you the covers of them where you are laying cards down trying to go on an adventure in the sea while you are also trying to avoid the the terrors of the sea but see some of the wonders in the sea. Um, it's a really interesting puzzle. When you play one card down, you have to play it so that the path is connected to another part of the other path. And you have to have a you can't have a certain number of each one of the um perils um showing at the end and you have to have certain things um that you cover up the wonders with.

So, really fun game. I've played it a handful of times, but I really am excited to get this one to the table a little bit more. And I guess I've got mine in alphabetical order here because that's how I got rid off my off my little cube. And my next one is the one that I hinted at just a little bit ago. That is the sequel to Rove. Um I've played Rove a lot. This one I've not played as much. And this is also by Dustin and Milan. Same as Adventures. And this is Aqua Rove. Uh resultsoriented versatile explorer. If you've played Rove, this is very similar. You're laying cards out. You're trying to make patterns. They move in certain ways. Um, there's also Astro Rove, which I'm hoping maybe gets delivered before the end of the month, so I can play that a more. I did content on that uh coming. But this one, so in Rove, you're moving horizontally. Um, you're you're moving you're putting your cards horizontal. This, because it's Aqua Rove, you're diving down into the ocean. So, you're placing your cards down. You're trying to get seven of them that you've been able to move your modules around. you have six modules that you place in a certain configuration that you are um that they can move certain ways in and stuff. So that is Aqua Rove. Um and if you want to check out I did do a uh tale of the tape which is what I call it where I compared Rove to Aqua Rove to the upcoming Astro that is on the channel. Um and if I remember I will link it up here um if I remember. Um but yeah that is Aqua Rove is going on the wall. I want to get that

one played a little more.

Okay so my turn. So before I continue, I just want to if for those of you who aren't familiar um with these games, they're all these wallet size games that are easy to

spoiling one of your

Oh, you did not see that. Um they're l these little wallet size games that are easy to store. Um they're new ones are coming out in little boxes though. Um so that they can sell them in retail. You can buy the wallet still and I have for a couple that I I'm getting because

the place I store we have a little hanging cube in the den

and these slide in perfectly. I put a little piece of cardboard so I can get two rows of them and I mean I've got 25 in there plus expansions and there's still space. Yep. So

So I just wanted to um talk about that for just a second before I continue. And since I already spoiled this one, I was gonna do them in a particular order, but I'm not

only in reverse.

I feel like I want to do them. So, this one is Wonder Tales. Wonder Tales is by John Keane. And this is a delightful little game where it's a two-player game where each player has their different color. So, one's blue, one's yellow. You are trying to get your cards.

I thought they were blue.

Blue and red.

Blue and red. Blue and red.

Okay.

Blue and red.

Blue and red. I haven't played it in a couple weeks. Um, but you're trying to get your cards lined up so that you score the most points. So, let's say Little Red Riding Hood scores the most when she is away from the uh Big Bad Wolf or um, etc. the three little pigs need to be next to each other

be next to the away from the wolf or you know um so you're trying to just utilize your cards so that you score the most points. You're putting them in a grid each round the grid is in a different shape so that it changes the game play a little bit. I believe it's three rounds or whoever wins

three rounds um

three times

or whoever wins twice. Yep. Um

um need to play a little bit. That's why it's on the wall.

Yep. You're drawing from a single deck. So the deck, you know which card is next when you play, so you know which card you're going to draw. Um, I also have the Rumple Stiltskin solo mode for it, which is a nice little solo mode. You set things up just a little bit differently, but it plays basically the same.

Oh, these are adorable.

Really great artwork on that one.

So yeah. So it's different fairy tales that you're trying to score the most points on. So that's Wonder Tales. I love this game. It's probably This one's probably my favorite one.

Yeah, probably. I don't I don't put things I don't say things are my favorite or I dislike.

Um my next one is a game about flowers. I love flowers. And this one is Tessy Mussy by Elizabeth I always say her name wrong. Hargrave. Hargrave.

Hargrave.

Elizabeth Hargrave. I like Tessy Mussy on this one. You're trying to get the best combination of flowers in your flower shop. Um artwork is delightful. Gameplay is delightful. doesn't

I cut I cut you choose.

I cut you choose. Um you pick your card, you send your other cards over. Um very quick to play. I'd say most of these games play

three rounds and you're playing only four cards.

So you're getting four cards into your display.

I learned how to play this at the farmers market on a Friday night. So it can't be that difficult. If I can learn it at a farmers market on a Friday night,

I think anybody can play this one. But that's Tessy Musy by Elizabeth Hargrave. I love that game as well.

Yep. Another one where I have the solo expansion as well. I played it solo before teaching it to Stacy. Um the flower shop expansion and we have the expansion collection which just adds some little cards to it like you add orange cards or green cards at orange flowers, green flowers or there's some other things that you add. So yeah. Um, my next one is the I believe the first game that I did um free content for before it hit Kickstarter after I got on Buttonshy's content creator thing. And this one is a game where the game is different every single day of the year and every year. Um, this is by Ian Tarter and this is the daily weather. And the in the daily weather, you have a month card and a date card that had to be set up in a certain configuration.

Then you have cards that show you how you need to have certain things. So you have a a week card. Um so that tells you which week it is, 1, two, three, and then four, five, and then a season card. And those cards match up with each other. And they need to and that tells you what configuration you need to have a certain symbol. So, you have all these symbols on these cards. You have um sun, clouds, snow, and rain. But then you have some different backgrounds. You have a solid background, you have a stripe background, and you have one that's like cut in half. When you play cards down, you have to put cards down so that at least one of the things matches perfectly, the um the uh symbol as well as the background in the end.

So, let's say one of these seasons says you need to have two cards and then a space and then two cards. And they have to be like the same symbol, whatever symbol it lines up with. You only win if you get that. But you can score zero points because then you're scoring based on another criteria. So, you're looking to get symbols in a certain configuration so that you win, but then you're looking for other symbols that you score off of. So, I've won several times with zero points. I've won with eight points. Like the win is can you get these cards these things in a certain configuration. Um the other uh interesting thing about this is once you have your cards, you can't flip them over. So as you're shuffling, you're kind of spinning them around, shuffling, flipping them over. Once you draw them into your hand, you can't flip it to the other side. You're using whatever side is up. So I really like this one. I like the fact that this one um does play every day of the year differently because the numbers on the cards are in different spots. The weeks that you're playing are different. The months are going to be different. Um so you're going to play this and it's never really going to be the same exact puzzle. I also have um this game with the weekly forecast uh little mini expansion which I've not yet to get to the table, but I'm excited about that one. Um so that was a daily weather. Uh, the next one is, I believe, the newest, um, Scott Alms solo game that has actually been released. There is one, I believe, coming

that was delayed a little bit in shipping. The production with the new boxes, like Stacy said, was a little bit more than what uh, they had anticipated in and changing stuff. And this one is called a dragon's gift. And in Dragon's Gift, once again, a nice little puzzle, which is a lot, which is what a lot of these are. They're nice little puzzles where you are kind of laying cards next to each other. You're trying to connect certain gems [clears throat] together. So, you have all of these gems. Um, and what you're trying to do is you're trying to connect these paths because if you make a certain gem then or if you have the right things. So like if you look in the top there, you can see you need two uh squares. You need a blue and a purple to make that brown hexagon.

Once you have that hexagon, you flip this over and the hexagon's on this other side. So you can see there's big symbols. Those are things that you actually those are resources you actually have access to. And then what you're trying to do is you're trying to connect things so that you can then have access to stronger um resources and stronger resources. Once you get all of your stuff connected, you have one card which is the dragon's gift. When you are ready to lay your dragon's gift down, you have to be able to lay down so that every resource that is on there, every gem type that is on there connects in a single path. So, like they can they all have to be able to connect to that dragon. So, very I mean I played this one several times. I really enjoy it. It's a lot of fun. Um got it has a couple little mini expansions that came with it. Um beacons and exotic treasures which or transports which I don't think I played with yet. So, I'm very excited to play with those as well. Um this is quickly moving up my list of games uh from Butt Giant and that is a Dragon's Guest part gift a part of the Scott Alms solo series. Okay, so my turn. And I I guess I saved the best for last because well, we'll see when I show it to you.

Why I Otter. So this is by Andrew Aaron Andrew Wilson. And in Yi Otter each you this is two player where you are playing your color against it's a color battle for the most part where your color is going to beat another person's color and the higher number wins and so you are we just played this a couple minutes ago so you would think that I would remember what it is. Um but each let let me look at my notes. I've got Oh, I've got notes. He is putting them down in front of me.

It's okay.

Each color beats another color or the higher number wins of the same color and you have to meet the scoring conditions that are made by the rejected cards of the um river. So, you have the river, you are choosing which card you want to put in your hand, you're if you win your hand, then you're choosing which one goes in the river. And then you're giving the other third card to the other player, hoping that that's not going to score against the river that's already laid out in front of you.

You don't have the third card in this one.

Oh,

that was the one. That was the other one.

There's just two cards. You get both. You get

You're drawing three. You're drawing from three cards in the river card away.

Yep.

So, you're drawing from three cards in the river.

I I otter. There's a series of three of these, I think, of otter collection cards. And so it's

kind of got a rock paper scissors with the colors with all of them. The tiebreaker is kind of a rock paper scissors. One color beats.

Pink beats, blue beats, blue beats, yellow, blue, yellow beats, pink.

So you're So

I need a cheat sheet for this one.

So you you're you're playing against each other and whoever wins gets to choose one card from the river and then the other person chooses one and whatever one isn't chooses chosen goes into the scoring

condition. So you play four rounds. It's very quick. It says 15 minutes. It maybe 10.

Yeah. And then you got to think a lot like I do then. Yeah. So then the next one that I chose to be on the wall this month is by Aaron Andrew Wilson as well. And that's an Otter one. This is

And we have Otter Chaos.

Otter one

up there which is the newest one.

The newest one. So, in an otter one, the [snorts] playing cards, you are playing them to the river. As with otter, they'd like to be in the river. So, there's the river in all of these games. And you are choosing which card has you are going to play by the arrow up or the arrow down. And the highest number of the arrow up wins. And then this is the one where you get to choose which one goes in the river, which one your uh opponent is getting and which one you are going to get. Depending on what's in the river and your scoring, um you want to get rid of the cards to your opponent that aren't going to score that are up in the river. Um I I like this one. I think this one's probably my favorite one.

Yeah, I like this one. So each each card they're kind of multi-use cards. The cards have otter colors, um, numbers, symbols, but you're using the ones you put into the river. You are using the colors of the the like this the color behind them, the number, and the color of the otter, the color, the ones that you're giving into your den, you're using the scoring conditions. So, every round there's three cards that are played. One is a neutral card. That one is simply there for the arrow up or down. And then um each player is playing one card down. If there's two or three up arrows, whoever plays the higher card wins. If there's two or three down arrows, whoever played the lower card wins. And then you choose like where everything is going. Um when you get down to the end, you each place one face down in your den and one face down in the river. Um it's a it's a it's a lot of fun. It's a nice little Once again, nice little puzzle. Kind of a brain puzzle. Like what do I want? What do I want to give her? What do I want to put in the river? that's going to score for me. Yeah.

One thing I do want to say about both of these games and also uh Otter Chaos is that these are extremely lowcoring games and so don't expect to go into this, you know, winning like 110 to 90 cuz you're going to have a score of like 7 to two.

Why Otter is very low scoring because you really are not scoring much. There's only four scoring cards and they don't score. Um and Otter one a little more that we're in the teens there. Same thing with Otter Chaos. Um, but yeah,

but yeah, I I like to have a big score. Big score means I did well. Low score means I didn't do well. So, even when I win with a seven, I still don't feel like I won. So, just a warning to those who are like me on those.

Okay. All right. And our final two going on. These are also in the Scott Elms solo series. Um, one of them is newer and one of them is oh, I don't know about a year, maybe two years ago. Um, but the first one is Land of Amazement. And I also have expansion collections for this. And in Land of Amazement, you are building out an amusement park. And you're using the cards with the different symbols on them to play them in certain ways. But at the end of your turn, at the end of the game, you have to have and actually at the end of each round, you have to have certain things in your in your park. And then at the end, you have to be scoring things based on this criteria down here. So it once again, it's a really interesting little puzzle that you really got to think about where you're placing things, what colors you're using, where you're, you know, what things you're using, what things you're not using. And you can see these different things have each thing. So this is speed alley. So it has two sets of space. There's space in between. Some of them have a lot of space in between.

So this one has a lot of space in between. Um, yeah. So, very excited about this. I'm excited to get the expansions to the table, too, because um I did get the expansion collection. I think when I got Dragon's gift was when the expansion collection was available. So, I have that in there as well, which I'm excited to get to the table. So, that is Land of Amazement. And the final one is also a Scott Alm solo game. This one, like I said, about I think maybe early 2025 it uh it came out. It it delivered um I think it was a 25. It may have been a 20 24. Pretty sure this was on my top 10 of the year that it came out though because I really really enjoy this one. This one is a nice cupa. Um and in a nice cupa you are trying to mitigate your daily um what do they call them? Your uh your distractions your daily distractions while getting staying focused and make a perfect cup of tea.

So, you are trying you have uh cards that are numbered 1 through seven. One of the expansions adds 0 and eight to it. Um, and what you're doing is you're playing these face down and you have an active side and you have a distracted side. So, then you have these cards that are distractions. So, like technology. And when you flip these over, these all go down uh face down underneath your TE's. And what you have to do is if it is if it ends up at the end of a turn on the active side, you get to discard these. If it is still on the distracted side, you have to do what is on the bottom. So technology, you have to choose a pair of cards that are next to each other and swap it with any other single card. So you got to move them around. So you are trying eventually what you're trying to do is you're trying to get your cards in order from one to eight. from selecting your tea to sipping and enjoying your tea. Something we know a lot about. So, and it goes to, you know, how, you know, selecting your tea, boiling water, selecting your favorite mug, pouring it, steeping it, adding milk and sugar, and sipping and enjoying it. So, when you shuffle these up, you shuffle these up and you put these in random order. So, they don't start in the order. So, when you start getting these, you got to figure out like, how am I going to move things?

Every round, you flip one of these over. Every round, you have these up. you have to go from left to right and do all of these. So, you really want to try and make sure that when you move these or when you move these cards, they end up over these because if you can get uh a um an active side one over this, you get to discard these. So, that's one less thing you have to do. So, um when this came out, this one quickly became one of my favorite Buttonshy games. Um it still is. It is probably in my top five still, um if not top three. Um, I really enjoy this one. I've got several expansions for it. Like I said, there's a there's a pets expansion. There's um a couple other expansions which just adds some other other cards. Um um seasonal there's like seasonal distractions one so you can like play with seasonal distractions. So very excited to get this one to the table again. Really enjoy playing this one. That is a nice cup. Well,

what

I have one I want to talk about. Okay,

so we did a demo on a game that is going to be hitting Kickstarter in Octoberish.

I think October. It's been pushed back. I think it says October now. September or October now.

Yeah, in Octoberish. And that is Forest Rivals. And we did a uh playthrough that will be posted in a couple days probably. Um we don't it's up already because we because it was pushed back. We had it up just in time and then they pushed it back. So, um, Forest Rivals is going to be coming out in October. It's a game where one player plays as bears, one player plays as bees, and you are trying to lay your cards over the top of the other players uh cards on the on on the pile or the stack that you're getting,

kind of shared tableau.

And it's a really fun game as well. Well, um, we don't have a wallet for that one to show, but um, I just wanted to do an honorable mention for that one as well.

So, we will definitely get that one table. It's just not going to be on the wall because there's no wallet.

No wallet.

Well, there you have it, guys. There is the games going on our wall. And you can see several other Butty games. And we got a few more in the in our little cube in there. Um, yeah, let us know uh which of these ones that we are putting on our wall you enjoy the most. Um, if you can see the ones behind us, let us know which ones of those you enjoy the most. Um, let us know what other buttonshy games you really, really enjoy. Um, yeah. Once again, this has been where there's wheels,

there's a play.

I'm Ian.

I'm Stacy.

We'll see you next time

at the table.
