Goa - The Classic Returnsa - Kickstarter Critique Review

Bower's Game Corner Apr 1, 2026
Transcript 14:32

YouTube, I'm back here today for another Kickstarter critique where I take a look at every Kickstarter tabletop game project every weekday at 1:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Give my honest thoughts on how that project is being run and sometimes we're kicking on over to Game Found like we're doing today. I am legitimately excited to be checking out this trend that has just taken over the entire hobby, which is re-releasing popular older games that was intellectual properties and it still is, but now it's like, all right, let's go revisit those 5, 10, 15, 20-year anniversary editions. They're printing money here and Goa has raised $112,000 for Quined Games. Wow, that's a lot of text. A modern classic reborn originally released in 2004, Goa by renowned renowned designer Rüdiger Dorn quickly became a cornerstone of the Eurogame genre. Praised for its elegant blend of auction, resource management, strategic planning, beloved by fans and critics alike, the game was nominated for the prestigious Deutscher Spiele Preis.

Ranked amongst the top 100 strategy games on BoardGameGeek for many years, it continues to hold an impressive BGG rating of 7.6 plus with thousands of reviews. Now, more than two decades later, Goa returns with a brand new Master Print Edition featuring completely reimagined artwork and an all new solo mode and subtle refinements that honor the original design while enhancing the overall experience. Whether you're a veteran fan or discovering for the first time, this is the definitive edition of a timeless strategy masterpiece. Wow, that was a huge chunk of text and I didn't know you could write that much text and I kind of like it, right? Cuz you're either going to zone out really quick or you're going to be like, okay, I'm in for all this information and I think you're the kind of person who's interested in a 90-minute Eurogame, you're probably not against reading all this. All right, one to four players, ages 12 plus. Let's take a look at that main image. It's a box. I'd love some more on the outside.

Not a huge fan of that, but as always with the video, I'm thinking of three things. Do I want it? Can you do it? How much is it? Let's see how they convince Kickstarter backers to get their money on this project. Also, if you're interested in Kickstarter content, please be sure to click on the pre-launch link for my upcoming Kickstarter launching May 11th. Trying to raise $3,000 to go to conventions, but let's get into Goa. 1:51, okay.

For centuries, the port of Goa has thrived. A crossroads of sea routes linking India with Arabia, East Africa, Southeast Asia, and beyond. Three. Here, wealth moves with the tides. Pepper, silk, and countless goods fuel ambition, rivalry, and reputation. A celebrated classic returns. Goa. There we go. The acclaimed game by Rüdiger Dorn is back in a completely redesigned edition featuring beautiful new artwork by Nayat. You are a merchant competing for influence in Goa. Auction market tiles to gain resources, ships, contracts, and powerful advantages.

Every bid is a decision. Push too hard and you overpay. Hesitate and your rivals take what you wanted. Win the right tiles, build your engine, and turn goods into momentum for the rounds ahead. Ship goods to unlock stronger actions and sharpen your plan. Timing these upgrades is everything. Explore beyond the harbor. Secure contracts, claim bonuses, and open new routes to victory. Outbid your rivals, read the table, and make every opportunity count. A timeless Euro classic back at last after years out of print. Now with a solo mode and presented as a deluxe collector's edition. Featuring a premium box, wooden tiles, double-layered player boards, and more.

Goa, a true bidding classic reborn. Follow the campaign on Game Found. But, once we got past about the first 25 seconds, which was a bit slow and got into the theme and whatnot, that was a great video. Do I want it? Yes, I do. Can you do it? I don't know it. I don't know, but I'm sure you're about to tell me here. Also, leading off featured pledge, 82 bucks doesn't feel bad for deluxeified version of the game. Off to a great start. Let's look at some information about Quined Games. They did Chicago 1875 series of the big shoulders. No, no, no, they did not do that. They are bringing this out. This was different company did that. That is a fantastic game, by the way. Chicago 1875. Ah, it was a fancy bit, very nice. Movers and Shakers, Stuppor Mundi, and Carson City Big Box. Let's see, were these on Kickstarter or were these on Game Found?

All right, so this was on Kickstarter, let's make sure people got their stuff. Movers and Shakers. Just a small update from RN. This is the end of last year. The pledge manager was supposed to launch yesterday, but we're still facing some technical issues that need to be solved. Most recent post. Hi, I love Carnegie, I love the tight economy of it. Watching the playthroughs of Movers and Shakers, I found that there's not so many ways to win. There's not so many ways to win. The investment takes the most points out of it, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Hello Danny, we will share the final rulebook in a couple weeks. This one's not out. That's what I'm looking for. Okay. Not out yet. So, we got one out, not out. Stuppor Mundi. People got their stuff yet? If you experience issues with your product, please fill out the form on our website. That's nice to post at the top. Because it kind of just gets rid of that whole, oh hey, I posted here about that. You're like, oh, we pinned it. Go exactly to this place to take care of everything. And it's like, okay.

I've contacted Quined Games, received no response after 56 days. Is this the level of customer service you offer? Could we still somehow pre-order? Saw this at Essen, was really interested. This one's not out. Or maybe it was out. Was it at Essen? I don't think so. Was going to see the replacement for the PVC tiles. However, on the day of delivery, Canada Post said they would return the shipment to sender. I've not heard back from them since. Can you help me? This is These are okay. So, it's from four months ago. I received my replacement castle pieces and they look like they were supposed to. Okay, so this one is shipped and they're doing replacement parts. So, it looks like they got a couple people in here need some help, but overall, looks like people got Stuppor Mundi. Let's go one more back. Make sure people got the Carson City Big Box. I think I've seen this on social media. So, I think it's out. Below that, I would check. Was this game shipped? I received an email on 9:30 stating my Anyone in NZ get their game yet? I officially need help. I have so many games I can't keep track of them. It was delivered and I'm off to find the local chapter of Board Gamers Anonymous.

Yeah, so this one's out. It came out three of like six months ago. Okay. Cool. So, they got two boxes out. So, can you do it? Yeah, I'm not worried about it. Do I want it? Yeah, I do after the video. And then how much is it? 84.95. That's reasonable for deluxeified version of the game. I'm in. They answered all the questions pretty quickly. Let's just get to some shipping. Hit me with some quotes. Gameplay video, rule booklet. What else do I need? Some quotes? I don't know. All new artwork, stuff, things. One to four, 12 plus. About this campaign. So, 69 euros. I'd convert the currencies as well. So, it's 82 bucks. The merchant edition delivers the No, that's the Master Print Edition. No, that is the merchant edition. Okay. So, that feels reasonable. Deluxeified version of the game with unique artwork and featured high-quality components, printed wooden tiles. You spotlighted wooden, I appreciate that. So, we go to the governor edition, which is 16 bucks. So, I don't know, a hundred-ish. The governor edition delivered the complete deluxe edition of a blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Premium printed acrylic tiles. Ooh, this will be interesting to see. How many people wanted the wooden versus the acrylic? Is that Is that the only edition?

Oh, alongside double-layered company boards and durable PVC cards. No, that looks like that is the only thing. Wow, those So, those are just the two pledges. I am very excited to see which one is more popular because I can't acryl- acrylic tiles, huh? I have a feeling the wood cuz cuz what's the price jump? It's 20-ish, 30 bucks. 16 So, yeah, 20-ish, 30 bucks after converting the currency. All right, let's go check out these pledges and see which is more popular, though. Why back now? So, 426 people said, I like the wood. Acrylics, 815. Two to one. Wow. I'll eat my words. People love their acrylics. Holy Toledo. Okay. Well, about two to one, but yeah, two-ish, two one. It'll probably hit there relatively soon. Stretch goals, I'd put these higher. Metal progress markers. Wow. Love me some metal progress markers. High-density cardboard for the boards. Great, you're talking to me in GSM?

You didn't hit me with those GSM. The Gambit module. If the stretch goals unlock the Gambit module, it'll be added to the game introducing a new layer of tactical depth to every auction round. This sounds massive. At the start of each round, players secretly select one of their Gambit cards. Then, when you become the auctioneer, wow, this is this is huge. I would definitely put that way higher. Now, they are all relatively high right now, so I can't even complain. We're like the first 25% of the page. Stories module. So, I take it back. Gold foil stamping on the box, triple-layered player boards. Oof, triple-layered player boards are annoying. Let me tell you. Unless you have a machine to do them. I remember that was the one where it was like, oh god. Cuz it's like dual-layered player boards aren't nearly as difficult, but with triple-layered, I remember it had to be somewhat manually done and it was a nightmare. Cap- Captain's mini expansions, Carnegie's deluxe, fantastic game, by the way.

Movers and Shakers Master Print, you play it on Board Game Arena, too. All right, how to play. Place the auction markers, stuff, things. What am I looking for? Shipping? That's it. Play the game on Board Game Arena. Wow. I'd make that clickable, but that's nice. Oh, and and now it is clickable. Excellent. Tutorial and playthrough, quick play, everything you need to make an informed decision. This is I got to go, what? I got to go.

I don't know why. Now you know why I make stupid thumbnails. Cuz they tickle me. So, we got a bunch of components. Yeah, I get it. The deluxeification came across. It looks good. Story module? Ooh. We have more up our sleeve cuz we got the stretch goals. This is the MSRP for the retail. We're not even going to have it here. Nobody's going to want it. It's the worst thing ever. Uh and then these are the fancy versions. Cool. That was clear, comprehensive. Just ship me. Ship me. Give me some shipping. Lots of videos. Available in multiple languages. Wow, excellent. Shipping. Here we go. Europe Europe Europe Europe United States North America United States 15. We're lumped together with Canada. Interesting. Okay, either way the price didn't feel terrible. I'm in and out the door roughly about a hundred dollars unless I want to go with the acrylics version which I don't have to.

But yeah, I say what? 80 to 100 120 is pre typical for a deluxeified version of the game. They did a great job spotlighting the track record of this game. There was no question about it. It was like this is a fantastic game. It was nominated for the blah blah blah. You You wrote a book up here. Good stuff. I still feel like we could have done a little bit more on that, but Yeah. Yeah, I think I'm sure it won some more awards. Pictures. Pictures would have been good. I Words are great. Words are great. You wrote like a whole book there, but I think a picture thing like hey, it got nominated for all these. It's fantastic. That sort of thing. All right. Is the stories module will that be part of retail too? How do I know that it's Game Found exclusive or not? Thanks in advance. Is there a joke I'm missing with the header about this campaign and not campaign? No, but it is funny how no one noticed until now. Fixed. Okay. Let's check out the updates. Give it a grade. It's a solid one. New stretch goals out Goa now in beta on BGA.

I love Board Game Arena. Thinking about shooting a video I'm shooting a review potentially later today on Board Game Arena where I go through a game slowly but surely and talk about why I like it. Wow, this is a lengthy lengthy. Oh, multiple languages? No, that's just really Oh, you did. No, that's just really lengthy. Okay. Two people said nice.

[panting]

Arnie from the UK was like Jiminy Christmas. You were a lot. I feel like I should say something. Nice. Uh I was like crazy, man. It's crazy. Okay. Um ask a question maybe. Get people more engaged. That guy felt bad. He's like I'll I'll say something. Uh welcome. We're excited for this. We hope for another game. Is the stories module Oh, I I was already over here. Final grade. Solid one. We got business handled very quickly. Do I watch it? Do I want it? Can you do it? How much is it? The three questions you do answer that Kickstarters backers need to have answered. They did it pretty quickly. Yes. So, do I want it? Uh yeah. I do. You showed the auction and how it was unique and cool and there's modules and stretch goals and deluxeified components and there's Yeah. Can you do it? Yeah, this game has come out. It won awards. It was fantastic. I've heard people talk about it. I remember the box was really boring and it had like a had like a guy with a pilgrim hat on. I think it was I hope that's I don't know if that's a offensive term now.

Uh but yeah, it was Yeah, this this guy. That one. So, needless to say big step up on the box. But yeah. So, um So, can you do it? Yeah, I'm not worried about it. And then how much is it? It feels Kickstarter reasonable for deluxeified version of the game. I know I could work wait for the standard version which is going to be in retail and even showed it. Hey, there's a retail version coming out. But yeah. A minus B plus range, I think. I think the main image could definitely be spruced up a bit. Some awards, something. But some more quotes I think would be good smattered about, but we got to be I'm going to go B plus. Almost I You could talk me into an A minus cuz I appreciate how quickly they got to business, but I'm going to I'm going to go with a B plus.

I think the beginning of the video dragged just a smidge bit, but once we got into it, they opened your wallet, they took out your money, they got out of here, and they convinced you to buy acrylics. So, good for them. That is Goa. B plus. Let me know in the comments below what's your final grade for Goa by Queen Games. And if you have a suggestion for an upcoming Kickstarter, Game Found, BackerKit, heck, even IndieGogo if you want. They're owned by Game Found now. Uh project, be sure to drop it in the comments below and I'll be sure to check it out. Also, May 11th next month, I'm launching a Kickstarter. If you want to buy your own Kickstarter critique, $30, but if you click on the pre-launch link right now, heart my most most recent update, you'll get two Kickstarter critiques for the price of one. You can buy one for someone who doesn't even want it. You'll be like hey, you'll be like you I know you've seen this guy. You don't like him. You'll be like hey, guess what? You can make him do whatever you want like a clown. I don't care. I just need 3,000 bucks. It'd be nice. Help the family. Also, you can sponsor the entire channel for 3,000 bucks, too.
